Jaipur: IIHMR University, Jaipur a pioneering academic institution in India Celebrated Teachers’ Day virtually to mark the birth anniversary of the great philosopher, teacher, scholar and the second President of Independent India Dr Sarvopalli Radhakrisnan.

The faculty of IIHMR University has contributed a good deal to the growth of the institute and has participated in Nation-building for the last many decades. They have served as role models for the younger generation. Their contribution has yielded rich dividends in the form of quality graduates from IIHMR University who stand stronger with the best in the world.

Dr PR Sodani, President, IIHMR University, while thanking his teachers who taught him and motivated him to reach this level also thanked his students for their love and affection and motivated them to always follow the right path and moral values in their life. Dr Sodani believes that he is still learning be it from his students or surroundings, learning has no age limits. You keep learning things from the time you are born.

Dr SD Gupta, Chairperson, IIHMR University believes whatever you are is the contribution of the teacher. teachers are the real mentors who inspire who share the knowledge they have gained through their experience in life. Teacher nit only teaches you but also develop the core values of life. How you can be a useful citizen and how you can contribute to the growth and development of the nation and how you can contribute to the lives of the people. Teachers are the GURU – GU is the darkness RU is the light. Taking people out of the darkness to the light. The role between the teacher and the students has to be played from both sides, the student must reach out to their teacher when needed and the teacher must be willing to guide their students. Most important is to create a culture of learning.

With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and a threat of Delta variant spreading, IIHMR University believed to cherish the auspicious occasion virtually with the teachers of the University. Hence, virtual wishes and greetings were a perfect way to realize the importance of teachers in one’s life, even if you are no longer a school-college going, student. This is because teachers are the bedrock upon which your real instinct, personality and any quality education are built and they are perhaps not everybody but very few people in our lives who elate when we, their students, outdo them.

Dr. PR Sodani Takes Over As 4th President of IIHMR University Jaipur

Jaipur: On joining as President of IIHMR University, Dr. PR Sodani said, “It gives me immense pleasure to start the new journey as President (Vice Chancellor) of IIHMR University, which has rich legacy in 36 years in healthcare management, education, and research.

This is to note that Dr. Sodani has 30+ year-long experience in academics as a teacher, leader, and institution builder. At the IIHMR University Dr. Sodani has served as Officiating President (2020-21), Acting President (2017-18), Pro-President (2017-2020), and Dean Training (2010-2020). He has a strong understanding of the higher education system, research and training in the health sector. He obtained his Ph.D. from M.L. Sukhadia University and MPH from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA.Dr. PR Sodani had been focal point for finalizing project implementation plan (PIP) for World Bank assisted Rajasthan Health Systems Development Project of five-year duration for Department of Medical and Health, Government of Rajasthan during 2002-2004. He has supported as Health Economist in conducting Cost-benefit analysis of World Bank assisted cataract blindness control programme in India for Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India during 2004. During 2017-2020, Dr. Sodani has been Principal Investigator for PMA Agile/India supported by Johns Hopkins University, USA and funded by BMGF. He has also workedin the area of food fortification and served as Project Director for Technical Support Unit for Food Fortification supported by GAIN. He teaches health Policy and Health Care Delivery System; and Health Economics in MBA and MPH (a cooperative program with Johns Hopkins University). He has supported in designing and conducting large number of leadership training programmes for senior executives from national and international geographies.

Afghanistan and India participate in IIHMR University’s talk on Public Health Actions for Universal Health Coverage in Developing Countries

IIHMR University organized a webinar on ‘Public Health Actions for Universal Health Coverage in Developing Countries.’ This webinar was organized under the aegis of SD Gupta School of Public Health (SDG-SPH). Dr. Ashok Agarwal, Trustee Secretary of IIHMR, Dr. Ferozuddin Feroz, Former Health Minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Dr. Indu Bhushan, IAS, Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ayushman Bharat, Dr. SD Gupta, Chairperson, Dr. PR Sodani, President, IIHMR University, were the Panelists. Dr. D. K. Mangal, Professor, and Dean (Research), Advisor, SD Gupta School of Public Health, IIHMR University moderated the session. The webinar focused on the importance of health coverage and the challenges of overcoming the need for basic access to quality health services the world over in developing countries.

Dr. Ashok Agarwal, Trustee Secretary of IIHMR said, “SD Gupta School of Public Health (SDG-SPH) has been launched to felicitate the contribution of Dr. SD Gupta to the universe of Public Health. The SDG-SPH has been launched with a vision to train public health leaders, address knowledge on pressing health challenges and enhance population health and well-being. SDG-SPH is dedicated the improvement of health and well-being globally by preparing students to become public health leaders, scholars and practitioners.”

Dr. Ferozuddin Feroz, Former Health Minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, said, “More than 50% of the population world over does not have access to essential, quality & affordable health services. Over 930 million people, or 12% of the world’s population, spend at least 10% of the household budgets to pay for healthcare (WHO 2019). UHC contributes to achieving the objectives of other SDGs. UHC focuses on Promotion, Prevention, Treatment, and Rehabilitation. Universal coverage does not mean free coverage for all health interventions regardless of the cost; it is about embracing health systems, health service delivery, health workforce, health facility, communication networks, quality assurance mechanisms as well as governance. Universal Health Coverage cannot be improved unless equity is achieved.”

Universal Health Coverage should be designed based on scientific criteria, the country’s disease burden, cost-effectiveness studies, and health technology assessments.

Dr. Indu Bhushan, IAS, Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ayushman Bharat, said, “From 2000s India has made considerable progress on health indicators. Infant Mortality rate has declined by 51%, Maternal Mortality Rate has declined by 61%, and the number of seats for MBBS has tripled which we see an increase to 242% i.e number of MBBS seats has increased from 25058 in 2006 to 85726 in 2020. We have also seen an increase in public health expenditure by 80% and life expectancy has increased by 9%.”

Dr. Indu Bhushan further added, “The objective of the National Health Policy of 2017 has been guiding the UHC to achieve its targets. The response to COVID-19 Pandemic has strengthened the response to healthcare where we see rapid infrastructure up-gradation, policy reforms, and increase in healthcare awareness campaigns, augmenting infectious disease surveillance program, adoption of digital innovative solutions, improvement in hygiene standards, push for undertaking more research, deepening global cooperation on health and capacity building of health workers.”

Major National Health Policy targets for 2025 have been an increase in life expectancy to 70, reduce neo-natal mortality to a single digit, decrease household facing catastrophic expenditure by 25%, reduce premature mortality from NCDs by 25%, increase health expenditure by Government as a percentage of GDP to 2.5% and establish integrated health information architecture. For achieving the ambitious targets of UHC, India needs to counter several challenges such as fragmented and siloed health delivery, limited availability of human resources, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, asymmetry and deficit in access to health information, affordability of healthcare, and non-standardized quality of healthcare.

Dr. SD Gupta, Chairman, IIHMR University said, “SDG-SPH has been established to develop an institution that focuses on not mastering theories but transmitting these theories in practice. The institution shall be exploring new areas in public health and shall emerge as a thought leader.”

Dr. DK Mangal, Professor, and Dean (Research), Advisor, SD Gupta School of Public Health, IIHMR University moderated the session stated, “Universal health coverage is about ensuring that people have access to healthcare without suffering financial hardships. It is the key to ending achieving the twin objective of ending extreme poverty and increasing equity and shared prosperity. Goal 3 and target 3.8 aim at achieving universal health coverage and includes financial protection and access to quality essential healthcare services and affordable medicines and vaccines for all. About 90 million people are impoverished by health expenses every year. However, Universal Health coverage has gained momentum.”

Disrupt, Accelerate and Innovate Key Focus Points of Health Next 2021 – Global Health and Innovation Conference conducted by IIHMR University

The Health Next 2021- Global Health and Innovation Conference is spread across two days conducted by IIHMR University, Jaipur on 11th and 12th January 2021. The conference concluded its first day with the key focus points on innovations in the health care sector, sustainability and integration of these healthcare systems, managing public perceptions, key points on public-private partnerships from the point of view of the state of Rajasthan and their improvisations for apt delivery. The conference had a participation of over 40+ stalwart panellists from iKure, StanPlus/ Red Ambulances, Pharmeasy, NISHTHA/ Jhpiego, Medicover Hospitals, India, Viveo Health, Ai Highway Inc, myresqr.life, TiE Global, Amity Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and Startup Oasis. The conference over these two days shall witness the participation of 1000 participants, panellists from 8 plus countries such as Germany, USA, Canada, UK, India etc. The GHIC offered a platform for healthcare start-ups students, alumni or people at large who have a business idea in healthcare, health tech space and want to get it nurtured at the IIHMR University’s Innovation and Incubation Center.

Keynote addressee Shri Naveen Jain, Ex-MD NHM & Former Secretary Skills & Entrepreneurship, Secretary, Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department, Govt. of Rajasthan, “The subject of the conclave is very exciting as it focused on encouraging the young generation to initiate startups in Public Health to offer solutions along with promoting innovations in this area. Innovations by start-ups must be encouraged not just in the private healthcare sector but must also be encouraged in the public healthcare sector. Young entrepreneurs must understand the existing gaps and offer solutions for the quick delivery to the end customer in the existing environment.”

Shri Naveen Jain said, “We must focus on key public perceptions which include- Availability of huge data not being utilized, lack of implementation of innovations due to less accessibility and acceptability due to lengthy government processes, financial crunch in the state of Rajasthan as compared to its peers such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana and even Punjab. He even pointed out that there must be integration in systems for smooth delivery of the end product or service. Jaipur:With a legacy of excellence in healthcare management, IIHMR University celebrated the Birth Centenary of Shri P.D. Agarwal (PD Ji) on January 1, 2021 with a gratified unveilingof the Brochure of the SD Gupta School of Public Health (SDG-SPH). In the auspicious memories of Shri P.D. Agarwal the key dignitaries of IIHMR addressed the students, staff and faculty about the vision and missionof Late Shri P.D. Agarwal. IIHMR University virtually inaugurates the 8th Cohort of Master of Public Health Program

IIHMR University virtually inaugurated its 8th Cohort of the prestigious international postgraduate degree program, Master of Public Health (MPH), in cooperation with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH), Baltimore, USA, on 12 October 2020, for the session 2020-22. During the inaugural, Dr. Ashok Agarwal, Founder trustee, IIHMR, congratulated the people behind establishing the prestigious collaborative program between the JHSPH, USA, and IIHMR University. He said that this prestigious program took around five years to develop and design, and today, it has come out to be a successful program. We get many applications indicating their interest and preference for this program, but we can select a very few for this unique course.

During the launch, Dr. SD Gupta, Chairperson, IIHMR University, also the Chief Guest of the program, said that it is the people’s farsightedness from JHSPH and IIHMR University to develop such a program. He said,” JSPH is the no. 1 in Public Health globally, and IIHMR is the top institute in health management. It is the union of the two institutions that resulted in bringing out a new MPH program and public health core competencies focused on management. This program was started to help the students of the Southeast Asian region, as the students of this part of the world should also get an opportunity for a quality public health program. The need for public health is never so much needed as now. The public health competencies are required, and it’s high time to realize that public health as a discipline has a significant role to play during the pandemic in improving health standards.”

The MPH program is designed to provide students with critical multidisciplinary training to help solve global public health problems. The original Johns Hopkins curriculum is delivered jointly by distinguished faculties of Johns Hopkins University and IIHMR University. A degree is awarded by Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Baltimore, USA. The students also get an opportunity to get connected with the Network of 20000 plus Alumni around the world. Students are awarded the degree by Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Baltimore, USA.

Professor Maire Diener-West Chair, Master of Public Health Program, Johns Hopkins, Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA, conveyed her wishes to the student of Cohort 8. She said, “ I am proud of this program as this represents the best of both the universities in terms of partnerships to empower graduates, for the necessary skills and competencies in public health but also special expertise and knowledge in health management.” She further said that she is glad that the people behind IIHMR could have the vision to anticipate the need for such a program.

Dr. P. R. Sodani. President (Officiating), IIHMR University, welcomed the students of the cohort program. He said, “Apart from teaching, we are engaged with JHSPH in various research, training, and capacity building programs as well. IIHMR is also collaboratively working with JHSPH on TVV-Teaching Vaccine Economics globally. IIHMR University has already initiated a course in Vaccine economics this year.”

Dr. Felicity Turner, Director, International and Continuing Education, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA, said that this is an incredibly exciting time in public health students globally and the interest of the current students in public health is more necessary.

Earlier, in the program, Dr. Seema Mehta, Chairperson, MPH Program, Associate Professor (IIHMR University, Jaipur), Adjunct Professor (JHSPH, USA), welcomed the dignitaries and the student. She said that since 2013, almost 58 students of countries including India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and the Maldives have passed out from this program and are working in the field of public health. The 2-year full-time MPH program aims to develop students’ competencies in core areas of public health and management besides developing multi-disciplinary skills among them.
