The company hopes that taking this positive step will support the implementation of the principles of circular economy in the long run.

(Left to Right) Acting Head of Cinema Operations at Cinema XXI, Ricky Samsoedin; sustainability analyst and lecturer in environmental engineering at the Faculty of Technology, University of Indonesia, Aulia Qisthi; and Head of Brand & Partnership at TUKR, Adhi Putra Tawakal at the media briefing on the partnership between Cinema XXI and TUKR in environmental sustainability initiative, Plaza Indonesia XXI, Jakarta (June 5, 2024).

Acting Head of Cinema Operations at Cinema XXI, Ricky Samsoedin, stated that, in running its business and operations, Cinema XXI always strives to apply sustainability principles. “We believe that every individual and company can participate in the efforts to achieve sustainability. Therefore, although Cinema XXI’s business is not directly related to activities that have a direct impact on the environment, the company is steadfast in playing its role in conserving and protecting the environment,” Ricky said.

Ricky explained that, since November 2023, Cinema XXI has been running a used cooking oil collection program through a partnership with TUKR, an Indonesian company that collects used cooking oil as a biofuel feedstock. “The used cooking oil that is generated from the food production at Cinema XXI is collected by TUKR as a feedstock in the production of biofuel, a source of energy that is more environmentally friendly compared to fossil fuel. Gradually, all cinema locations of Cinema XXI will participate in the used cooking oil collection program,” Ricky said.

This step, Ricky stated further, is in line with the company’s commitment to maintaining the quality of the Food and Beverage products served to the consumer. “In using the cooking oil, we ensure that it is in its best state, such as indicated by its color, where it isn’t dark or murky. On the other hand, we also take measures to prevent the used cooking oil from harming the environment, which would still be valuable in the recycling process,” Ricky added.

Moreover, Ricky shared that Cinema XXI is always using safe and environmentally friendly packaging for its line of Food and Beverage products. “Cinema XXI has also started using biodegradable materials that degrade more easily in nature and can still be recycled. Furthermore, Cinema XXI also uses food ingredients that have high quality and are healthier, such as Non-Genetically Modified Organism (Non-GMO) corn kernels for its popcorn, organic coconut sugar, and trans-fat-free oil for its popcorn,” Ricky explained.

TUKR Head of Brand & Partnership, Adhi Putra Tawakal, commented that the collaboration with Cinema XXI in the initiative to collect used cooking oil is aimed at making a positive impact on the environment and society. “We at TUKR are grateful to be trusted by Cinema XXI as their partner in the initiative towards sustainability. We certainly hope that more businesses and individuals will be motivated to take a similar initiative to realize a better and healthier Indonesia, even the world,” Adhi said.

According to a report from TUKR, from November 2023 to March 2024, 209 of Cinema XXI’s cinema locations participated in the used cooking oil collection program, achieving a total volume of 52,766 kg. In effect, based on a number of research and data, Cinema XXI would contribute to around 175,027 kg of greenhouse gas savings, prevent water pollution of up to 52 million liters, and protect the health of over 52,766 members of society.

“The commitment of Cinema XXI to sustainability is in line with TUKR’s mission to optimize the value of used cooking oil as a fuel that is cleaner and friendlier to the environment. TUKR’s mission is supported by a certification from the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) which TUKR has earned and serves as a guarantee that the used cooking oil from Cinema XXI will meet the high standards of sustainability set by the European Union. This ISCC certification opens access to the European biodiesel market for the used cooking oil from Cinema XXI, making it highly competitive and earning it an opportunity to be a part of the sustainable energy production and value chain,” Adhi stated.

Aulia Qisthi, a sustainability analyst and lecturer in environmental engineering at the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Technology, expressed her appreciation for the steps taken by Cinema XXI in their sustainable programs for the environment. “Environmental protection and sustainability are our collective responsibility. It is therefore important that all parties take part in the efforts to achieve that, which can start with simple things that are around us,” she said. Aulia added that all stakeholders need to be involved, from the government, businesses, to the public at large, in supporting and adopting sustainable initiatives for the collective good of ours in the present and the future.

COVID-19 is not the first Pandemic experienced, in fact in the last 12 years there have been 6 disease conditions declared as Procedures Concerning Public Health Emergencies (PHEIC). Hence, there is a need for more robust public healthcare systems that reflects on health system preparedness and how we address it. Experts from India, Indonesia and Bangladesh shared their insights at a webinar conducted by SD Gupta School of Public Health at IIHMR University Jaipur on ‘People, Pandemic and Public Health – Reflections for Strengthening Health Systems’.

Eminent speakers such as Dr. Chandrakant Lahariya, National Professional Officer, WHO and the lead author of Till We Win: India’s Fight Against COVID-19 Pandemic along with other panellists, Dr. YodiMahendradhata, Vice Dean for Research and Development, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, UniversitasGadjahMada, Dr. Malabika Sarkar, Director of Research & Lead Center of Excellence for Science of Implementation and Scale-Up, Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC ) James P Grant School of Public Health, Dhaka, Bangladesh, Padma Shree recipient, Padmashree Dr. Chandrakant S. Dr. PR Sodani, President, IIHMR University, said, “A healthy future can only be attained by emphasizing on public policy and by putting wellbeing and health at its epicentre. One must focus on the process of gathering evidence, draw suggestions, assess the approaches, summarize and then conclude to bring out the right outcome in public health. This webinar focused on the preparedness for a future crisis, stresses on the challenges and their equivalent solutions in public health and how populations can be made healthier for future resilience. COVID-19 has given us lessons to learn how to convert the challenges into opportunities.”

Dr. Chandrakant Lahariya, National Professional Officer of World Health Organization in India and the lead author of a recently released book titled “Till We Win: India’s Fight Against the COVID-19 pandemic,” said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us the importance of people’s participation and community engagement for a healthy society, this could be seen in a case of Dharavi Mumbai. The medical care system based upon hospitals and treating the sick only is not enough. We need a strong public health system to ensure diseases are prevented and a healthy lifestyle promoted. There is a need to transform the medical care system into the healthcare system by strengthening the public health system. 1 in 8 persons in India is suffering from a mental health condition and the Pandemic has taught us to focus on this issue.”

Dr. YodiMahendradhata, Vice Dean for Research and Development, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, UniversitasGadjahMada, Indonesia said, “We need to take stock of opportunities that COVID-19 Pandemic has thrown at us. This pandemic has given us an opportunity for an equitable health system and has put this issue in the forefront. Building a strong healthcare delivery system through telemedicine and telehealth and COVID-9 has accelerated their use. This has majorly helped the healthcare workers in Indonesia with no personal involvement or virtually. There is much more attention given to the health of healthcare professionals including their mental health and well-being. Capacity building and training of healthcare professionals have increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 also pointed out that Health Research and innovations are no longer a luxury but are a necessity. These opportunities must be taken up and must be actioned for a better public healthcare system.”

Speaking on the various opportunities and challenges faced during the Pandemic in Bangladesh Dr. Malabika Sarkar, Director of Research & Lead Center of Excellence for Science of Implementation and Scale-Up, Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) James P Grant School of Public Health, Dhaka, Bangladesh said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has made the country explore opportunities and challenges as the country does not have a very structured health system. Telemedicine is an opportunity well explored by the country with a population of 165 million 162 million use mobile phones however, lack of connectivity is a big challenge. There is a great disparity in the doctor to the population ratio. 60% of the mortality in Bangladesh is due to communicable diseases. The discontinuity of maternal & child health, including non-communicable disease care, increases the vulnerable population’s burden. Government is engaging the Non-Government organisation which is an opportunity. Strengthening the community clinic is important where developing primary healthcare channels are important.”

Dr. Malabika expressed, the ongoing disruptions of essential health services are the most critical challenge for the health system. Dr. SD Gupta School of Public Health can focus on emerging alternative strategies such as telemedicine using phone or internet, triaging to determine priorities, and online supply of drugs indicate the human being’s resilient nature.

The webinar explored that there is an urgent need for interlinking People, and Public Health and transformation of healthcare systems by working with key stakeholders. SD Gupta School of Public Health (SDG-SPH) can be instrumental to make policy interventions for better interlinking of stakeholders to bridge the gaps between education and practices of public health across the globe.

Over 50% of internet users in Asia will be using digital financial services by 2025

Analysts of the international fintech holding UnaFinancial revealed that more than half of internet users in the developing countries in South and Southeast Asia will be using digital financial services by 2025. Besides, by 2027 even digitally underdeveloped countries in the region will provide access to the Internet and digital technologies to 85% of the population.
The research considered the penetration of digital financial services in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Sri-Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.
As the development of online financial services largely depends on access to the Internet, the analysts made a forecast of the maximum Internet penetration for each country first. This level can be as high as 81-85% depending on the age structure of the population.
UnaFinancial
Taking into account the Internet penetration rate of the previous years, as well as the government measures towards digitalization and the impact of Covid-19, the analysts have predicted that Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, India, and Sri Lanka will reach the maximum possible Internet penetration of 81-85% by 2025. The two remaining countries, Laos and Myanmar, will reach this level in 2027.
Given the year of the maximum Internet level for each country, the experts estimated the penetration of digital financial services. The forecast considered the share of the population having online financial accounts and the increase of financial inclusion during the previous years.
It revealed that in most countries, more than 50% of internet users will be using digital financial services by 2025-2027. In India, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia the level of financial services penetration will be especially high – from 62% to 69%. Meanwhile, in Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar it will be relatively low. In these countries, the development of online financial services can be faster if the government takes a combined approach to develop financial technologies in terms of the legal framework and increase of digital and financial literacy.
