Typeset and Turnitin Join Forces to Deliver Full-Service Paper Authoring and Plagiarism Checking Resource

India:  Typeset, an integrated platform for writing, collaborating, and publishing research papers has joined hands with Turnitin to become a full-service plagiarism checking resource for writers, researchers, educators, and students. The integration creates an authoring platform for setting up scientific or educational papers, complete with text similarity checks. Typeset made the move to integrate with Turnitin in order to make the writing process easier.

With over 100,000 journal templates, researchers and authors can write papers and articles in the appropriate and expected format—without the need to worry about typesetting and style. Turnitin adds the ability to make sure that the hard work and compiling of research and original thought was supported by a program that monitored academic integrity.

“It has been a true pleasure partnering with Turnitin,” said Mr. SaiKiran Chandha, Founder and CEO of Typeset. “We are especially thankful for Mark Harnor at Turnitin, who helped us through the integration workflow. Typeset has evolved over years as a go-to destination for academic content writing tools alongside aiding researchers for content formatting, as a conversion tool for publishers, and as a dissemination tool for institutional research. We are confident that together with Turnitin, Typeset will continue to make meaningful contributions towards integrity in academic research.”

Typeset has partnered with Turnitin to offer plagiarism checking within its authoring platform to all users at no additional cost. Plagiarism concerns are one of the major reasons an article is rejected in technical screening during the submission/editorial processes. The integration offers a solution to this problem, effectively forming a one-stop-shop to set up and self-monitor the writing process.

The program takes the pressure off the writer, who is trying to bring an idea to a review board. It assists in following best practices and ethics guidelines, so the author or the thesis advisor can concentrate on the theme, message, and discoveries without the unexpected mistake of stepping on someone else’s words.

Barracuda Networks Threat Predictions 2021 reveal that there will be an increase in denial of service (DDOS) attacks, ransomware, business email compromise and malware-based attacks

India:  Barracuda Networks, a trusted partner and a leading provider of cloud-enabled security solutions, revealed predictions that will shape the future of enterprise security in the coming year. It indicated that the threats of today will continue to target the weakest link in the chain, which normally is the human element. Year 2021 will witness many of the key trends in 2020 to continue.

  • Distributed enterprises and remote workers

Considering that in a span of a few weeks, companies went from 10% of workers being remote to over 90% of workers moving to remote, by 2021 we will see many of them slowly bringing back some key workers to their facilities and adopting measures that will give their employees flexibility if they can maintain productivity. While many companies had some experience of setting up temporary and limited remote access for contractors and vendors, every company will need to make sure they have clear processes and controls for managing a large percentage of their employees remotely for extended periods. Every company will need to have policies and procedures for managing remote access.

  • Accelerated migration to cloud adoption

Meanwhile, there will be an accelerated adoption of cloud services. First, new applications are being delivered as Software as a Service (SaaS) instead of on-premises implementation. Second, and more importantly, existing on-premises applications are also migrating faster to the cloud. 2020 was that inflection point for many with the cloud. COVID-19 forced many companies to significantly accelerate their migration to cloud services to address shutdowns and remote workers. IT executives will need to understand whether and how the assets and services delivered in the public cloud are adhering to compliance regimes as more and more capabilities are now delivered as cloud services. In addition, as more and more companies are exposed to threats that impact the privacy of their customers or enterprises, the risk of breaches will require IT security executives to be able to effectively communicate and execute plans that encourage and require other teams to enforce compliance.

  • Shortage of key resources to help mitigate growing security issues that will take advantages of the new reality

There will be a continued shortage of cybersecurity talent to help mitigate security issues, despite the recession and COVID-19 job losses. Attacks will also increase to take advantage of the new reality like distracted workers, global pandemic, cost pressures from the recession, remote access, accelerated adoption of cloud services. Each of these alone would be cause for concern for cybersecurity professionals. All these macro trends happening simultaneously demands the highest level of vigilance against those who would take advantage of these situations.

However, security executives will need to achieve the same level of security or more with tighter budgets due to the economic recession. There will be a growing need for security executives to get fully comfortable with novel cloud-centric security architecture. Additionally, 5G adoption will start to get more tangible in many regions of the world. IT security executives will need to come up with a more holistic understanding of risk and adequate protection measures as it pertains to the entire corporate network, including OT and industrial IoT environments

  • Zero Trust Network Access solutions are the way forward for enterprises to keep risks at bay

The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed work habits, which means corporate endpoints will be predominately used outside the perimeter of the corporate network in work-from-home environments. This will require organizations to review their current endpoint security and compliance enforcement approaches. As more consumers and businesses are becoming aware of the data breaches, there will be increasing discussion about the role of trust in security. While the concepts like Zero Trust and micro-segmentation are emerging as ideal ways to decrease attack surfaces, these solutions will be part of a broader approach that will leverage social graphs and machine learning to identify issues and enforce trust relationships.

Speaking on these security predictions, Hatem Naguib, COO, Barracuda Networks said, “In 2021, we foresee the threat landscape to become more challenging and COVID-19 will continue to impact security in many ways. Every industry needs to make sure it is prepared to deal with security issues. IT security executives should make sure these plans include security compliance checks that are straightforward and quick to implement without having a long-term impact on productivity. In addition, thorough and comprehensive backup and recovery solutions will be critical. Any business that has customers, employees, and transactions is a target. Healthcare, infrastructure (utilities), and government are more vulnerable than normal as they have stretched resources and will continue to be target-rich environments for those who would use simple methods like spear phishing, malware, and ransomware to create the most damage.”

Emerging security technologies in 2021

There is no reason to believe the threats of today will not be the threats of tomorrow. There will just be more of them, and they will be more effective and continue to see a proliferation of distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks, ransomware, business email compromise, and malware-based attacks. These attacks will be more successful as companies deal with a series of events that have changed the attack surface.

Considering the enterprise security trends, it is clear that there will be a sharp increase in the demand for cybersecurity talent next year. Solutions that move security closer to the edge (people, places, and things) will become much more popular in 2021.

  • Classic gateway-based solutions will be augmented by CESS solutions

In email protection, classic gateway-based solutions will be augmented by Cloud Email Supplemental Security (CESS) solutions that leverage API access and social graphs/artificial intelligence/machine learning to mitigate messaging-based attacks. More such solutions will be used to address the threats on collaboration-based tools such as Zoom, Slack, and Teams. These platforms have become very popular tools for collaboration and are susceptible to the same type of attacks that we see with email.

  • SD-WAN solutions have become more prevalent

Secure Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) solutions have become more prevalent. As public cloud adoption increases, many companies have started to leverage Azure, Google, and Amazon backbones as a delivery vehicle for their own WAN. This makes sense as more applications and services are delivered on these cloud services and their points of presence continue to expand worldwide.

  • Zero Trust is the new standard in secure remote access

With remote workers and cloud-delivered services becoming a de facto part of every business, solutions that manage access at the highest level of granularity with the least level of complexity to setup and manage, will become more popular in 2021. Trust-based solutions that implement Zero Trust and other trust-based solutions will be effective mechanisms to manage privileged access to services. Traditionally, customers used complicated solutions like NAC or VPN. In 2021, we will see great adoption of lightweight solutions that quickly and effectively manage access at the device and individual level.

To this, Klaus Gheri, VP, Network Security, Barracuda Networks added, “Cybercrime will go where money can be made. By 2021, the market will start adjusting to the major and lasting shift that COVID-19 has caused in corporate work environments. Security products and architectures will be under increasing pressure to be flexible to deploy and operate, minimally invasive to the users, and as effective as possible without conflicting with the privacy legislation in various regions of the world.”

In addition, the physical world is expected to respond to concerns about privacy and security with increased local legislation to ensure companies are implementing and maintaining the highest level of protocols to protect themselves. There will be a continued sharp increase in the demand for cybersecurity talent into 2021 as every company will have to implement measures and augment their resources to manage and monitor solutions for addressing the COVID-19 mayhem.

AiiSocial goes Glocal with 10 vernaculars and 4 international languages

New Delhi: Empowering more people to keep in touch using their native language, AiiSocial – a non-manipulative social media platform – is now going live with over 10 Indian vernaculars & amongst the first to introduce international language for its growing audience from these geographies. The platform will now be available in Hindi & Punjabi & followed by BengaliMarathiTamilTeluguGujarati, and Kannada among others domestically while introducing German followed by Arabic, Spanish & French for international users over the coming weeks both across Android & iOS applications. The AiiSocial App was only available in English till date. About 30% of AiiSocial users are from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, especially from Rajasthan & Bihar.

AiiSocial is an ingenious platform that addresses ‘the social dilemma’ faced by our society today. For the uninitiated, the meteoric rise of social media platforms, and the tech industry at large, has given birth to isolated communities. Some of the other pressing issues tech platforms include ‘surveillance capitalism’ ‘manipulative algorithms’ and ‘deep data mining’ alongside others. These have far-reaching effects on the fabric of our society as well as the behavior of an individual.

For instance, the isolated communities are more likely to limit social exchange, build social differences, create biases, and spread misinformation. According to an estimate, a typical social media post reaches less than 5% of a person’s friends and followers. The profile modeling further gives rise to behavioral modulation wherein algorithms bait people with content that they ‘might’ engage with. This ends up entirely changing their behaviors.

AiiSocial addresses all such challenges effectively. Building on its non-manipulative algorithms, the platform extends exceptional connectivity between friends with 100% reach on their posts. It further provides people the complete control of their data and allows them to monetize it as well. This democratizes data, rewards people for using the app, and gives full visibility as well as authority of the data shared. Since the data is directly shared by a person, it eliminates presumptions in advertising as well as baiting tactics used for profile modeling. Hence, the individual receives advertising content that is perfectly in line with their preferences.

Speaking on the vernacular addition, Mr. Ankit Chaudhari, CEO, and Founder of AiiSocial said, “At AiiSocial, we have today created a thriving community that virtually emulates our real-world interactions. AiiSocial ensures that digital technology does not limit the social circle of a person. It rather expands the same and extends rewards to people for their end-to-end engagements – might it be by creating superior visibility around COVID-19 or by engaging in our own version of IPL. All of us at AiiSocial share the vision of a truly democratized tech landscape with the #MyDataMyAsset movement. Following the flexibility of 8 vernaculars on the platform, perhaps we are one step closer to the virtual embodiment of the real-world exchanges. We are also excited about the short video & messaging features being released shortly after vernacular & looking forward to establishing deeper connect with our subscribers”

The app allows people to share their opinions, photos, and videos while engaging in discussions and initiatives that frequently take place on AiiSocial.  The platform is today seen as a game-changer on multiple fronts in the current technological scenario. You can also join the global #MyDataMyAsset movement by downloading the AiiSocial app for Android or iOS.

Barracuda researchers detected millions of bad bots attacks on eCommerce websites during the holiday shopping season

Come holiday season and online shopping spree begins with full force, making the eCommerce websites an attractive target for cybercriminals to launch attacks. This November, Barracuda Networks, a trusted partner and a leading provider of cloud-enabled security solutions, detected millions of bad bots attacks that were been used by the attackers to run distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, make fraudulent purchases, and scan for vulnerabilities they can exploit.

Barracuda researchers in the middle of the month, ran the Barracuda Advanced Bot Protection in front of a test web application, and detected a staggering number of bad bots in just a few days with millions of attacks coming in from thousands of distinct IP addresses. When viewed by the time of day, the researchers found that the bots don’t just wait until the middle of the night to attack. In fact, the bot activity peaks late morning and goes on until 5 p.m., which indicates that the cybercriminals aka “bot herders” follow a regular working day.

Bad bot personas are bots that have been identified as malicious based on their pattern of behavior. They are grouped by User-Agent, some of which are good. For example, GoogleBot, which crawls sites and adds them to search rankings, is good and should not be blocked. Cybercriminals have been using different ways to spoof good User-Agents to conduct the attacks. The bad bots spoof these known good User-Agents, which would need deeper scrutiny to tell them apart.

To identify a bot as being bad when the User-Agent claims to be a good search engine, Barracuda researchers use different methods; Injecting honeytraps like hidden URLs and JS challenges; Using rDNS (reverse DNS lookup) to verify bots coming from a claimed source; Inspecting whether the client is trying to access URLs used by common app fingerprinting attacks; and analysing further with ML, in case the methods don’t work out. HeadlessChrome, yerbasoftware, and M12bot are some of the bad bot personas that showed an increase in numbers.

Speaking on the threat, Murali Urs, Country Manager-India, Barracuda Networks, commented, “While analysing which Internet System Provider or Autonomous System Number has been the source of this bad bot activity, our researchers identified Indian mobile provider Airtel’s subnet ranges in the mix, as well as some of the big public cloud providers like Google Cloud, Amazon. This shows that even though the source of bots is international, it would depend on the bot and the site it is targeting.”

With the holiday shopping season expected to continue in full swing till the New Year, eCommerce teams should start taking necessary steps to safeguard their applications against bad bots. They must install a well-configured web application firewall as a service solution and make sure that the application security solutions include anti-bot protection to effectively detect advanced automated attacks. eCommerce websites should further turn on credential stuffing protection to prevent account takeover.

Technology enabling truckers against scammers and burglars

LogoLight BG (1)

If you are a truck business owner, then you might be at the risk of losing your hard-earned money to scammers. It’s 2020 already, technology is evolving by leaps and bounds, and scammers are more powerful than ever. Often coming from modest education backgrounds and even lesser technologically informed communities, truck owners usually end up becoming soft targets of scammers and burglars.

From fake transporters, auto thieves to impersonators, there are plenty of scammers out there preying on the innocent and unaware truck owners. But truck owners are fighting back & safeguarding their
business with the use of technology. Innovation in the field of sensors and software is paving a way for the golden era of transportation in India. Many startups are working on solving various problems that a fleet owner may have, thus delivering the impact of the innovative developments in technology to the fleet owner. WheelsEye is one such young startup from Gurgaon that is already helping lakhs of truck fleet owners adopt technology, drive profitability and secure business interests.

About a recent incident, Buland Singh, a truck owner from Gurugram explains how he was duped of 15,000 rupees by a person claiming to be a transporter. The impersonator approached him via a Facebook group of transporters and fleet owners. Such groups are a common sight and every fleet owner is usually a part of at least 8-10 such groups. The scammers pose as a potential broker or a transporter and offer an attractive rate for ferrying goods. The deal happens on Facebook / remotely. Truck owner is simply trying to conform to the new normal, but when the truck reaches the loading destination, the driver is looted of cash and fuel. In a more common occurrence like the one that happened with Buland Singh, truck owners never get paid the balance 10% amount and the impersonator simply vanishes.

This happened because, for Buland Singh, there was no way to ascertain if the person is fake or real. Fragmentation of the market plays a crucial role in catalyzing such frauds. Very few transportation
companies or fleet owners are properly drafted entities. Fewer use official email IDs and proper working addresses. Majority work management is usually happening via generic email IDs or Whatsapp, working from remote locations. Technology-enabled truck startups are driving defragmentation and organization of truck supply chain dynamics by building real-time aggregation visibility. Many family-owned transportation companies are also investing in technology to be able to connect with fleet owners with utmost transparency and deliverance.

Interestingly, technology is also enabling truck owners in the most unexpected places. Sanjeev Kumar, a WheelsEye sales representative in Himachal Pradesh explains about how technology is helping truckers
in remote areas of Himachal Pradesh. “Usually mountain people in India are still living with 2G and small keypad phones. But when it comes to truck owners, they are utilizing technology much like their counterparts in big cities.” Explains Sanjeev

He continues “At first when I started working in this territory, I thought it would be very hard to convince truck owners to buy truck management technology. But simply by focusing on truck safety, anti-theft technology and secure digital payments, I have been able to generate sales conversions comparable to Metro Cities. The market response shows a clear need for enabling truck owners.”

“WheelsEye has transformed GPS technology. By integrating an ecosystem of technology services alongside GPS, truck owners are no longer limited to just tracking the truck location. With almost real-time visibility of business operations, truck owners can make informed and immediate decisions. They can also plan for their business goals and chase them with transparency and audacity. And most importantly it also runs on 2G, letting the smallest truckers in the farthest places grow” Explains Mohit Saini, a senior sales officer responsible for the Northern States.

In a separate incident, Gaurav Trivedi, a truck owner based in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, was able to recover his stolen truck in just 60 mins with the help of WheelsEye. He noticed suspicious activity on
his WheelsEye app and quickly contacted the truck driver. It was then that he came to know that the truck had been stolen. Apparently, his truck driver was approached by an imposter in Ratahara, Rewa. The imposter claimed that the truck owner, Gaurav, had instructed him that the truck was needed for urgent delivery. Faithful to his employer, the gullible driver gave him the keys.

Ultimately, after contacting the driver, it became clear to Gaurav that the truck was stolen. So, he turned the truck’s ignition off from his WheelsEye app and informed the nearest police station. He
gave them the exact coordinates in Ratahara. Eventually, the thief was caught and the truck recovered. Gaurav Trivedi, at last, breathed a sigh of relief. Like Gaurav, countless truck owners have foiled truck thefts and recovered stolen trucks with the help of technology apps like WheelsEYe

Speaking on the adoption and importance of secure digital payments in the trucking industry, Sonesh Jain, a spokesperson from WheelsEye shared that “In the past, we have seen multiple scattered instances
of coordinated attacks to scam our customers by impersonating as WheelsEye and asking for money. Thanks to the robust systems, we rapidly acted upon it and plugged the vulnerabilities immediately. This helped us create more trust with customers. Now every time a truck owner spends money for purchase on WheelsEye app, he feels more convinced, and ultimately happy about it.”

Scammers will keep trying irrespective of the service provider a truck owner is working with. On the pretext of sugary talk, they will try to scam business and individuals into transferring money online,
but with greater adoption of technology, and deeper utilization of innovative developments in telematics and truck management, truck owners are now more enabled than ever. With the help of startups like WheelsEye, they are securing and growing their business.
