Vinod Bhanushali Moves On From T Series After An Eventful 27 Year Stint, To Pursue His Entrepreneurial Journey

After over 27 years at Super Cassettes Industries Pvt Ltd, aka T-Series, Vinod Bhanushali has resigned as the President – Global Media, Marketing, Publishing and Music Acquisition.

Over the last 27 years, Vinod Bhanushali has been the backbone, the pillar and the catalyst of change at Super Cassettes Industries Ltd a.k.a T Series; and has taken the company from strength. to strength. He has led the marketing for over a 1000 films and has built the company from being one of the top 3 music labels in 1997, to today being established as India’s largest music company, the largest integrated motion picture studio, and creating and building the world’s biggest YouTube Channel with 19 crore subscribers.

He has decided to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams, and is setting up a boutique content company which shall create new age content.

Vinod Bhanushali says, “Having literally started my career at T-Series, it’s an emotional moment for me as I leave the company. Whatever I know about music and films, I have learnt it all during my sole long innings in this company. I’ll forever be obliged to my mentor, Shri Gulshan Kumar Ji (my saab) and Bhushan Kumar. Saab, for giving me a platform at T-Series and directing me to perform and grow from strength to strength along with the company, and Bhushan Kumar for leading the company and backing me after saabs untimely departure. But, with every goodbye comes a new beginning.

I’ve always worked like an entrepreneur, taking all decisions which were good for business, growth of the company and also for the people who work there. And BK (Bhushan Kumar) supported all my decisions. I’m excited to start something of my own, which I will announce very soon.”

The Journey So Far…

Starting off his journey with humble beginnings, as a clearing and forwarding agent at the Mumbai Customs Docks, Vinod made a shift to the entertainment business, by joining Sahara Studios as Associate Junior worker. A chance meeting with the Late Shri Gulshan Kumar ji, in November 1994 became a turning point in his life. Gulshanji saw the potential in the young man, and told Vinod to join him on board T Series. The rest, as they say is History.

Vinod learnt everything on the job under the guidance of Shri Gulshan Kumar and forayed into marketing in 1996. His big break was getting the first exclusive film song to play on Channel V — Salman Khan’s “Oh Oh Jaane Jaana”, diversifying T-Series ‘portfolio from folk, devotional and regional music. A year later, when the company’s marketing head quit, Shri Gulshan Kumar entrusted Vinod with the responsibility, even though he (Vinod) expressed his apprehensions that he was handling production and he didn’t have extensive experience in marketing till then.

“Jo banata hai, usse bechna bhi aana chahiye,” Shri Gulshan Kumar told Vinod, adding, “I take the responsibility of grooming you. Now, we will not hire anyone from outside, you’re our homegrown guy and you have the knack and passion to do this.”

They started expanding their Hindi music catalogue and identified and acquired the music of some of Hindi cinema’s landmark films. Fate dealt a cruel blow to Vinod and T-Series on 12th August 1997, in the form of Shri Gulshan Kumar’s untimely death. However Bhushan Kumar, then only 19, took over the company. Under his leadership and Vinod’s learnings and execution over the years, they started rebuilding the company to realise Shri Gulshan Kumar’s vision.

With the digital evolution, T-Series not only started licensing music from 2006, but under Vinod’s marketing expertise, also ventured into publishing and strengthened their digital distribution network. Interestingly, at T-Series, Vinod has been the driving force of two cycles of music. The first was in the cassettes and CDs era with Sonu Nigam’s Deewana and Adnan Sami’s Tera Chehra. And in the digital era, with singers like Guru Randhawa, Jubin Nautiyal and Dhvani Bhanushali whose songs registered over 1 billion views each on YouTube.

Following Shri Gulshan Kumar’s words that ‘Content is king”, they created a huge library of superhit songs. And today, T-Series’ main YouTube channel is the No 1 YouTube Channel in the world with nearly 19 crore subscribers and over 15,000 songs uploaded., which are frequently viewed by the subscribers and music lovers. This achievement is a result of years of handwork of creating and marketing thousands of songs to make them so memorable today. “We know Gulshanji is proud to see T-Series as the No. 1 channel on YouTube today and also the premiere film studio in the country,” reminisced Vinod, who has been an integral part of this journey.

Moreover, Vinod’s role in the company also grew with the changing times. After starting with audio and video cassettes, to successfully foraying into the digital space, he was also actively involved in the movie-production business of T-Series. He was the co-producer on several important and blockbuster films like Kabir Singh, Batla House, Saaho, Thappad and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. Not to forget, having about 45 theatrical releases in three years in the pre-Covid era is also a record feat for anyone in the Hindi film industry. Moreover, he’s also led the marketing and promotion of more than 1000 movies.

A new era is about to begin.

Speaking about blending Aye Mere Humsafar and Ab Mujhe Raat Din, music composer Abhijit Vaghani says, “Aye Mere Humsafar and Ab Mujhe Raat Din are both iconic songs. For mixtape we always look at songs that match with their lyrics and arrangements and these both blend flawlessly. This mixtape composition demanded a grand arrangement of strings and we got the best – Mumbai String Orchestra to do it and this made the song magnanimous. It was lot of fun to work and feature them in this video. Palak with her extended range of voice and Armaan with his extremely talented skill of singing just made them a perfect pair for this. Their tonality, the scales of the track demanded singers like them. I am glad they came on board.”

Says Armaan Malik, “Singing iconic tracks is always a surreal, learning experience. It’s also a huge responsibility to live up to the original. I’ve literally grown up listening to songs such as Aye Mere Humsafar and Ab Mujhe Raat Din – both of which comprise of beautiful, delicate and intricate melodies by legendary musicians of our industry. Palak and I had an amazing time recreating these magical tracks, with the fabulous musical support by producer/composer Abhijit Vaghani. I’m really looking forward to this episode and just like our previous mixtape seasons I hope it receives the same love, adulation and success.”

Adds Palak Muchhal, “It felt really nice to sing these iconic tracks that are loved by all even after years. Armaan’s voice is very soothing and our collaboration is loved always. Abhijit Vaghani blends the romantic classics Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin & Nazar Ke Samne together…

The somber and soulful Shilpa Rao teams up with new-age sensation Yasser Desai for the 3rd season of Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series’ Mixtape Rewind, presented by Amazon Prime Music. Abhijit Vaghani entwines the classic love songs together that pay tribute to the romantic era of the ’90s and early 2000’s, while director Ahmed Khan sets the ambiance on sets for the nostalgic mood. Shilpa Rao’s and Yasser Desai’s rendition of ‘Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin’ and ‘Nazar Ke Samne’ retains the original melodies of guitars, tabla and dholak, however, the magical touch of sarod provides those additional tugs at the heartstrings.

The new season will be available exclusively first on Amazon Prime Music for Prime members to enjoy an ad-free and hands-free voice enabled experience with Alexa.

Says Bhushan Kumar, “‘Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin and Nazar Ke Samne are among the all-time classics when it comes to romance and nostalgia, which is this season’s theme. It was perfect to have Shilpa Rao and Yasser Desai sing them and add new soul to these timeless songs. Abhijit Vaghani has a distinct ear and understands blends, tunes and beats like no other. Audiences are sure to enjoy this episode of T-Series MixTape Rewind.”

Speaking about blending ‘Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin’ and ‘Nazar Ke Samne’, music composer Abhijit Vaghani says, “I was looking at two major hits that made a lot of sense together with their lyrics, scales, etc. After a long time we found Nazar Ke Samne for Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, I really wanted this song because it was one of my favourites too! I chose the sarod and the piano because its always nice to have a fusion of Western and Indian instrument. We have always done that in Mixtape, their frequencies are very different and it matched with the context of the songs like ‘Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin’ has a special line which is like a musical signature so those demanded either a Sitar or a Sarod, so I chose the Sarod and it sounded good with that fusion of the piano. We have wanted Shilpa on Mixtape for a long time and with her basey and hollow voice, Yasser’s voice was just perfect. I am happy that he was on board; he is a great singer too. He just made the track bloom out with the way Shilpa sang it as well”

Speaking about being a part of Mixtape for the first time, Shilpa Rao says, “This is my first appearance on T-Series Mixtape and I’m quite excited about it. It was great to reminisce songs from Aashiqui movie, whose album has been the biggest landmark album of the 90’s music. It is my first collaboration with singer Yasser Desai and loved singing and shooting with him. The whole team, Ahmed Khan Sir, Bhushan Ji and T-Series team to everyone involved, it was a blast and I really hope that the song make it to the heart of our listeners as much it did in our hearts.”

Excited to be a part of Mixtape Rewind Yasser Desai comments, “This is my first time on T-Series Mixtape and it feels great to be a part of it. I will be singing two of my favorite songs from 90s which remains to be my favorite era – I’ve grown up listening to the 90s music. I’ve remained a fan of Shilpa Rao’ texture since her song Ik Lau from Aamir so it was legit a dream come true on sharing stage with her. I am really grateful to the whole team at T-Series for making me a part of this. Abhijit bhai is ofcourse like an elder brother, he is immensely talented and it was a pleasure working with him.”

Urvashi Rautela is all things grace as she aces the “Ballet Act” for Bhushan Kumar’s ‘Doob Gaye,’ alongside Guru Randhawa

There is nothing that the versatile beauty, Urvashi Rautela cannot do. The leggy lass is known for her electric dance moves with various hit songs to her credit, and its common knowledge that Urvashi is trained in over 25 dance forms. However, for the recently released Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series track, Doob Gaye featuring Guru Randhawa, Urvashi had to master the tough act of Contemporary Ballet and that too in a few hours!

The art of Contemporary Ballet is not an easy one to conquer. It takes years of practice and efforts to master this dance form, which is all about elegance, grace, balance and form. However, Urvashi Rautela is a trained dancer and it took her one hour, due to her background in dance and grasping prowess to master the same. The fact that she is dancing barefoot on a beach with soft sand makes this an even bigger challenge. But this did not dampen the determined Urvashi’s spirits, who believes that where there is a will, there is a way. The result is all there for one to view on T-Series Youtube channel on April 30, the day the video will be released.

Speaking on the same, Urvashi says that, “The song is beautiful and all about raw emotions to do with love, longing and loss. When I first heard about the concept, I actually discussed with Remo Sir & we reduced my dance acts so as to fit in more of the emotional side of the story, which is sure to tug at heartstrings. Learning contemporary ballet is no easy task but I am thankful to have Remo sir to guide me through it all. Me & Guru were supposed to collaborate in 2018 but it didn’t work out cuz of other professional reasons and I think that Doob Gaye was the best way for us to come together. “

The love song ‘Doob Gaye’ directed by Remo D’Souza, penned by Jaani, with vocals by Guru Randhawa and music by B Praak, will be out on the 30th April on T-Series’ YouTube channel.

A filmy love story of Rajkummar Rao & Fatima Sana Shaikh in Ludo’s released sweet, upbeat love song Hardum Humdam!

With Ludo, the dream team of director Anurag Basu, producer Bhushan Kumar and composer Pritam introduce audiences to fresh new music that binds together the four compelling stories and its characters. The multi-starrer comic crime caper that is a tale about the unavoidable jeopardies of life is filled with edginess and intensity but also comedy and love.

After the catchy love song ‘Aabaad Barbaad’ in the voice of Arijit Singh that took viewers on a crazy love ride, comes Anurag Basu’s fresh, sweet track titled ‘Hardum Humdam’ that was released on the weekend.

The contemporary love song composed by Pritam, sung by Arijit Singh and written by Sayeed Quadri, beautifully captures the fun essence of Ludo’s storytelling and leaves us in the mystery of the craziness these characters are stuck in in the film. While the lyrics of the song have an old-world charm about them, the visuals and the music are very modern and upbeat.

Calling this song new, fresh and a clutter breaker, director Anurag Basu, says, “The music is extremely important to a film. Before I start writing a script I have a playlist ready. Hardum Humdam is a truly wonderful song, has a meaning in every line and takes the narrative forward. Sometimes when you hear a song over and over you get tired of it, but I fall in love with Humdum each time I hear it. We always say we miss that timeless music and meaningful lyrics, Humdam is all that.”

T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar says, “The beauty of Ludo’s music lies in its diversity. The film is intense and edgy with its stories so every song makes the film light and sweet. ‘Hardum Humdam’ shows the innocence of the characters. It’s truly very contemporary that will resonate with everyone.”

The ace music director, Pritam, adds, “The script of Ludo is very edgy with lots of intense emotions. Anurag wanted the songs to be sweet to create a buffer or a musical relief to give the audience a break from the intensity of the film. Hardum Humdum is a very sweet song which is exactly what Anurag wanted like Aabaad Barbaad.”

The song has been incredibly well received by audiences everywhere with fans highly appreciative of the eloquent lyrics. A song that beautifully tells a romantic story, it’s no surprise that this song has soared to success.

The ensemble cast of Ludo includes Rajkummar Rao-Fatima Sana Shaikh, whose love story is as filmy as it could get. Rajkummar, who has an undying love for Fatima, is the poster boy for unrequited love. On the other hand, Fatima is a devoted middle-class housewife who has a spark in her waiting to erupt.

Ludo produced by Bhushan Kumar, Anurag Basu, Divya Khosla Kumar, Taani Somarita Basu & Krishan Kumar, directed by Anurag Basu the film will release on 12th November 2020 on Netflix.

Tulsi Kumar learns to play the guitar for her rock ballad ‘Tanhaai’

After numerous chartbusters, Tulsi Kumar now teams up Kabir Singh composers Sachet-Parampara for a rock ballad that is extremely close to her heart.

‘Tanhaai’, which falls under the pop-rock genre, will take listeners through varied emotions, as Tulsi Kumar comes into her own as an artist.

Given the genre and the Pop-Rock vibe of the song, the guitar arrangements are an important element in the music production of the song and also in the music video.

Tulsi Kumar who is acing the pop space in 2020 with her collaborations like Tere Naal, Zara thehro , Naam that has hit millions of views, took up the challenge to learn the instrument and began training for it 4 months ago when work started on ‘Tanhaai’.

Not only did Tulsi pick up the chords of the song but also the key pieces and ridges so as to make it authentic and true to the rockstar look. While the singer plays the keyboard she also learnt the cello for her last hit ‘Naam’, she believes that learning instruments helps better an artist in not only polishing one’s singing skills but also in the overall understanding and portrayal of the character in the song.

Talking about her journey and learning the guitar, Tulsi Kumar says, “I wanted to create a single which has a very Pop-Rock vibe to it and yet is soulful. After my discussions and Jamm sessions with Sachet -Parampara, the talented duo came up with a scratch of Tanhaai and I absolutely loved it in the first go itself.

The guitar is the key instrument in the songs music structure, so it was very important for me to learn it. I’ve always loved the guitar but I never got around to learning it. So when we started working on ‘Tanhaai’ I felt it’s the right time to pursue my personal love for this instrument and also justify its importance in the song.`

Such is her love for the instrument now that the singer plans to continue learning the guitar- She adds, “Playing the guitar requires a lot of patience and focus and one that takes several months to properly learn. I am going to pursue this and see it through. I’m absolutely enjoying the learning process.”

T-Series presents Tulsi Kumar’s fresh new single ‘Tanhaai’. Directed by Sneha Shetty Kohli, the song features Tulsi Kumar and Zain Imam. Composed by Sachet-Parampara with lyrics by Sayeed Quadri, ‘Tanhaai’ is out now on T-Series’ YouTube channel.
