NTPC and CCTE Collaborate on Thorium-Based ANEEL Fuel

New Delhi, 30th December, 2024 : NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power company, and USA-based Clean Core Thorium Energy (CCTE) have announced a strategic partnership to explore the development & deployment of “ANEEL™️” (Advanced Nuclear Energy for Enriched Life), a Thorium based fuel for Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), subject to approval from the respective Governments.

NTPC, a Maharatna company under Govt. of India, is committed to the energy transition for achieving India’s net carbon zero target. In addition to renewable energy, NTPC has also ventured into Nuclear energy as a clean, dispatchable, and baseload source of energy to support this endeavour. As part of its broader commitment to sustainability and energy security, NTPC is focused on collaborations, technology acquisitions, and indigenous fuel development.

CCTE is a leading developer of thorium-based nuclear fuel technologies, committed to pioneering the research of advanced nuclear fuel cycles. CCTE’s flagship ANEEL™️ fuel combines thorium with small amounts of enriched uranium. The expected benefits of ANEEL™️ fuel include the utilization of thorium as a fuel in existing PHWR reactors, significant reductions in nuclear waste, enhancing India’s energy security using domestically available thorium, and improved safety and proliferation resistance. Additionally, ANEEL™️ fuel offers cost savings by delivering greater energy output within existing safety margins and lowering the operating costs of current reactors.

Subject to approval from respective Governments in line with prevailing national laws, NTPC and CCTE intends to collaborate for :

  • Exploring development & deployment of ANEEL™️ fuel in India.
  • Exploring possible indigenisation of ANEEL™️ fuel manufacturing, local supply chain development.
  • Exploring establishment of supply chain for HALEU (High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium).
  • Exploring supply of Uranium to India with sovereign guarantee.

Speaking on the development, General Manager (NTPC Nuclear cell) Shri A P Samal and Founder & CEO of CCTE Shri Mehul Shah, stated that this collaboration reflects dedication to fostering innovation in nuclear energy by exploring ANEEL™️ fuel technology.

NTPC Concludes National Finale of Power Quiz and Medha Pratiyogita 2024

Mumbai, 24th May 2024 – NTPC proudly hosted the National Finales of the Power Quiz 2024 and Medha Pratiyogita 2024 at the Power Management Institute (PMI), Noida, celebrating a remarkable journey of learning, knowledge sharing, and healthy competition among employees and their families.

A total of 1820 teams participated in these events, with 570 teams competing in the Power Quiz 2024 and 1250 teams competing in Medha Pratiyogita 2024.

Power Quiz, spanning 47 days, aimed to create an environment of learning and knowledge sharing among employees while enhancing awareness about developments in the energy sector.

The winners of the inaugural edition of NTPC Power Quiz 2024 were Shri Prag Sood from NTPC Telangana and Shri Harmeet Bagga from NTPC Ramagundam.

Whereas, Medha Pratiyogita 2024, featured quizzes in four different categories: Junior (Class IV to VI), Middle (Class VII to IX), Senior (Class X to XII), and Employees (including spouses). Teams were selected through preliminary rounds at the project and regional levels.

The winners of the Medha Pratiyogita 2024 final round are Neel Goswami & Avyan Garg from PUVNL, ER 1 (Junior), Rishabh Raj & Ishan Snehi from Vindhyachal, NR (Middle), Tanmay Verma & Shaurya Deep from Vindhyachal, NR (Senior), and Arindam Dhar & Satya Ranjan Mahapatra from North Karanpura, ER 1 (Employee) category.

The grand finale events were honoured by the presence of Shri C. Kumar, Executive Director (HR), along with Shri V. Jayanarayanan, GM (HR-Opn.), and Shri S.K. Majumdar, GM (PMI). Both the quizzes were conducted by the esteemed quizmaster Shri Gautam Bose from M/s Greycells.

Mumbai, April 24, 2024: NTPC proudly announces its resounding victory at the prestigious SCOPE Business Quiz Bonanza (SBQB) held recently at SCOPE Convention Centre, New Delhi as part of the Public Sector Day celebrations.

The NTPC team comprising of Shri K M Prashanth, GM (CC) and Shri Anshuman Srivastava, DGM (CP) emerged as the winner in the grand finale, surpassing stiff competition from other esteemed public sector units.

The prizes were distributed by Shri Amarendu Prakash, CMD (SAIL), Shri Atul Sobti, DG, SCOPE, Shri Uttam Lal, Director (HR), NHPC and others senior dignitaries from SCOPE. Shri D K Patel, Director (HR), NTPC congratulated the team members for their excellent performance.

More than 100 teams from various Maharatna, Navaratna and Miniratna PSUs participated in the quiz from across the country. After an initial screening round, followed by two semi-final rounds, the grand finale had four teams – one team from NTPC and three teams from SAIL. After four rounds of quizzing, NTPC team emerged as the winner.

The quiz covered questions from management concepts, current business events, brands, business personalities and also the history and legacy of Public Sector Companies.

Vikram Solar Commissions 140 MW Solar Project for NTPC

Chennai: Vikram Solar, one of India’s leading module manufacturers and a comprehensive EPC solutions & rooftop solar provider, announced the completion of a 140 MW solar plant project commissioned for National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) at Bilhaur, Kanpur, UP, spread across 700 acres. The 140 MW Solar project also includes a 33/132 KV switchyard. The expected energy yield of this project in Uttar Pradesh is 319 million units and is expected to power 1,45,662 houses per year.

On this occasion, Mr Saibaba Vutukuri, Chief Executive Officer, Vikram Solar said, “We at Vikram Solar, are proud to associate with NTPC for this prestigious project in its mission to support India’s transition towards green energy. With this project, we reiterate our commitment to providing innovative, superior quality and performance-based solutions to our customers to accelerate solar adoption in India. The completion of this project is a testament to the diligence and enthusiasm of our on-ground team who completed the project well ahead of the deadline despite multiple logistical challenges in 2020.”

Mr Venkat Muvvala, Head of EPC, Vikram Solar, added, “Despite several hurdles faced during execution of the project due to the pandemic, Vikram Solar successfully commissioned the plant for NTPC to achieve Commercial Operation well ahead of time. We appreciate NTPC for its excellent support and co-operation from all quarters, to reach this important milestone. NTPC is one of our largest clients with portfolio of commissioned and under construction projects totalling ~708 MW. Our continued association with an esteemed client like NTPC is a testament to our clients’ trust in our products and execution capabilities.”

The project has been developed by NTPC after winning a competitive bid from UPNEDA (Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency). Vikram Solar Limited was subsequently awarded this project on turnkey basis for EPC. This is a landmark Project for both Vikram Solar and NTPC in Uttar Pradesh, it being the largest capacity solar Plant commissioned so far in the state.
