Government of Meghalaya’s marketing initiative for Pineapple farmers

Mumbai, 29th June’24: The Government of Meghalaya’s ongoing market linkage initiatives have resulted in the export of 3.5 MT of organically grown pineapples to the Middle East. This marks the first international consignment for the current season under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Meghalaya State Agriculture Marketing Board and Lulu Group International. The MoU was signed in presence of the Hon’ble Agriculture Minister Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh November 2023 during the ‘World Food India’ event organised by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India.

Significantly, this year’s pineapple exports have shown a marked increase in price realization compared to previous years, driven by fruit quality and strategic market positioning. Last year, exports of 20 MT of GI-tagged Khasi mandarin to Dubai achieved doubled price realizations compared to local markets. This year’s consignment continues to meet international standards, reinforcing Meghalaya’s reputation as a supplier of premium agricultural produce and ensuring better returns to the State’s farmers

The pineapples were sourced from the several villages of Tikirikilla block of West Garo Hills, under the supervision of the Muktidata Multipurpose Cooperative Society. As the season unfolds, additional consignments from other parts of Khasi and Garo Hills will be dispatched, further enhancing the farmers’ income.

This trade is part of the ongoing initiative titled ‘Meghalaya Collectives’, which is a Government of Meghalaya’s strategy towards collective marketing of small-scale farmers of the State. Through this initiative the government is providing packaging, branding, testing and marketing support to agri-entrepreneurs and farmer cooperatives of the State. The initiative endeavours to expand into new domestic and international markets for agri-produce of the State’s farmers, leveraging modern trade channels, e-commerce platforms, and partnerships with prestigious brands.

Another step in this direction is the recent collaboration with Mother Dairy Fruit and Vegetable Pvt. Ltd., under which a trial shipment of 250 Kgs of pineapples was sent to Delhi. These pineapples were made available for sale and free sampling in 10 Safal retail outlets across Delhi. The Pineapples received a very favourable response from the consumers which resulted in Mother Dairy Pvt. Ltd. placing an order of over 300 MT for the current season with plans to expand sale to many more outlets as the season progresses. The price realisation for pineapple farmers through this trade is expected to be nearly double of what they receive in local markets. Mother Dairy has also made a commitment to further explore similar linkages with other Spice and fresh produce from the State.

Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Conrad K Sangma recently visited a Safal outlet (Mother Dairy’s fresh produce retail chain) in New Delhi, highlighting the State’s dedication to promoting its agricultural produce. This initiative aims to establish a consistent value chain, ensuring regular availability of fruits to customers in Delhi and beyond.

Managing Director of Mother Dairy Fruit and Vegetable Pvt. Ltd., Shri Manish Bandlish remarked, “Introducing Meghalaya’s pineapples into our product range showcases the region’s rich agricultural diversity. We look forward to working closely with farmers, supported by the Government of Meghalaya, to offer more unique products from fruits to spices.”

The Meghalaya Agriculture Marketing Board and the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare will continue to prioritise the market linkage efforts with an aim to make Meghalaya synonymous with high quality agri-produce and double the income of the farmers of the State.

Mumbai / Indore, Madhya Pradesh, June 29, 2024 – The “Palm Oil – Transforming Perceptions for Health and Nutrition” seminar, jointly organized by Solidaridad, Asian Palm Oil Alliance and SEA successfully concluded at the Brilliant Convention Center in Indore. The event brought together leading nutritionists, scientists, medical professionals and edible oil industrialists like the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA), Adani-Wilmar, Godrej Agrovet limited to discuss the multifaceted benefits of palm oil and its role in India’s edible oil landscape. Palm oil’s rich nutritional profile was a key focus of the seminar, highlighting its high content of carotenoids and balanced fatty acid composition. Experts discussed potential health benefits associated with palm oil consumption, including improved heart and brain health, antioxidant properties, and support for eye health.

Image 1

Some of the discussion highlights:

  • Palm oil’s rich nutritional profile, with crude palm oil being one of the world’s richest sources of carotenoids (500-700 ppm).
  • Potential health benefits including improved heart and brain health, antioxidant properties, and support for eye health.
  • India’s palm oil consumption now exceeding 38% of total edible oil consumption, followed by soybean oil (21%), mustard oil (14%), and sunflower oil (12%).
  • Plans to expand oil palm cultivation area by an additional 0.6 million hectares by 2025-26, aiming for a total of 1.0 million hectares.
  • Projected production of crude palm oil to reach 1.12 million tonnes by 2025-26 and 2.8 million tonnes by 2029-30.

The event also addressed India’s growing reliance on palm oil, which now exceeds 38% of the country’s total edible oil consumption. To meet this demand, plans were outlined to expand oil palm cultivation area by an additional 0.6 million hectares by 2025-26. This expansion is expected to significantly boost domestic production, with projections indicating that crude palm oil production could reach 1.12 million tonnes by 2025-26 and further increase to 2.8 million tonnes by 2029-30, marking a substantial step towards India’s goal of self-sufficiency in edible oil production. This seminar recognizes the government’s ambitious target for achieving self-sufficiency in edible oils and is linked to the National Mission on Edible Oils- Oil Palm which is an essential step towards making India ‘Aatmnirbhar’ in edible oils. Its aim is to deconstruct myths and misconceptions that exist about the relationship between health and environmental impact of palm oil.

Atul Chaturvedi, Chairman Asian Palm Oil Alliance, stated: “India, as the world’s largest importer of palm oil, is committed to becoming self-sufficient in edible oil production. Palm oil has been a staple in various food and non-food products in India for centuries. However, in recent years, misleading reports about its impact on health, nutrition, and the environment have surfaced, causing harm to our farmers, especially smallholders, and negatively affecting our economy. This seminar aims to change public perceptions about palm oil by presenting scientifically accurate information.”

Dr. Shatadru Chattopadhyay, Managing Director, Solidaridad Asia, emphasized: “We are actively engaged in promoting sustainable practices in the palm oil sector through initiatives such as the India Palm Oil Sustainability (IPOS) standards platform. Despite its pivotal role, palm oil faces negative perceptions fueled by myths regarding its environmental and health impacts. These misconceptions not only harm the industry’s reputation but also affect the Indian economy, particularly impacting palm oil farmers and smallholders. Our efforts focus on dispelling these myths and promoting accurate information to support both sustainable palm oil production and the livelihoods it sustains.”

Mr. Ajay Jhunjhunwala, President SEA said: We are committed to promoting sustainable practices in the Indian palm oil industry. By encouraging farmers to adopt the Indian Palm Oil Sustainability Standard, we aim to ensure that our agricultural practices are environmentally friendly and socially responsible. We urge companies to support this initiative by purchasing palm oil that meets these standards.

Dr BV Mehta, Executive Director SEA, highlighted the economic significance: “India’s import of approximately 9 million tons of palm oil annually underscores the critical need to improve local production. With palm oil consumption surpassing 38%, and soybean, mustard, and sunflower oils following closely, there is a pressing gap that must be addressed through enhanced local cultivation and support for our farmers. As leaders in the edible oil industry, we are committed to raising the minimum selling price of palm oil to benefit our farmers and strengthen domestic production.”

Dr Suresh Motwani, Regional Head Veg Oil Solidaridad and Secretary General APOA, commented on the exhibition: “With this unique concept of exhibiting palm oil-made products, this seminar stands as proof that palm oil is an integral part of the Indian kitchen. By dispelling myths associated with it, India can surely achieve the Prime Minister’s vision of a self-reliant India in edible oil production.”

Sougata Niyogi, CEO, Oil Palm Business, Godrej Agrovet Ltd, said: “The National Mission of Edible Oils – Oil Palm is a step in the right direction for our country to reduce the import of edible oil. With a potential to yield 3-4 tonnes/ha/year, it is one of the highest yielding crops compared to all vegetable oil seed crops. Requiring less water when compared to other crops like sugarcane and paddy, it also enables farmers to have an assured source of income for more than 20 years in addition to alternate source of income through intercropping. Additionally, with only agricultural land permitted for growing the crop, oil palm also aids in increasing the biodiversity in the region.”

Dr. Vijaya Khader, Former Dean Acharya NG Ranga Agriculture University and Nutritionist added: “Numerous studies have substantiated the manifold benefits of palm oil across various applications, owing to its versatile characteristics in both edible and non-edible products. Before forming any opinions about palm oil, it is imperative that individuals educate themselves thoroughly about its attributes. Only then can they make informed decisions, rather than relying solely on hearsay.”

Mumbai 27 June 2024: The bull run in residential sales across the top 7 cities tamed down marginally in the second quarter of 2024, to the backdrop of increasing property prices and a high base record of the previous quarter (Q1 2024). Latest ANAROCK Research data reveals that housing sales witnessed a quarterly drop of 8% and stood at approx. 1,20,340 units in Q2 2024 across the top 7 cities, against approx. 1,30,170 units sold in Q1 2024. Notably, NCR witnessed a 134% Q-o-Q jump in new supply in Q2 2024 against Q1 2024.

Anuj Puri, Chairman – ANAROCK Group, says, “The quarterly decline seen in housing sales is essentially because of the all-time high base considered in the previous quarter, when more than 1.30 lakh units were sold. Data indicates that average residential prices have seen a quarterly jump of 7% while annual rise of a significant 25% in the top 7 cities.

“NCR witnessed the highest quarterly jump of 10% in Q2 2024 while Hyderabad saw the highest yearly jump of 38% in average residential prices,” says Puri. “However, if prices are kept in check henceforth, housing sales may not be majorly impacted in the upcoming quarters.”

That’s how he was on set too, he made sure we were all comfortable and there were times when he had some suggestions that worked out really well in the long run. I am really glad that I got the opportunity to work with him, he is one of the legends of the industry. He has added a lot to the show. All in all it was a great experience”

Gagan also shares his reaction when he first read the script, “When I first read the script, the first thing that hit me was the honesty with which the script was written. Moreover, I felt that the writers narrate the stories for us but nobody really talks much about the writers. It felt like a journey that was close yet too far from me. While I am from the industry, I never understood the plight of a writer the way I did when I read the script.
