Vaishnavi surges ahead in Asian Games Trials

Hyderabad…Vaishnavi Veeravsmsham who just won the Silver at the under 15 surges ahead in the Olympic Class Laser Radial class with 5 wins out of 6 races

Vaishnavi of the Yacht Club of Hyderabad chose to participate in the Olympic Class with the hope of qualifying for the Asian Games in 2022.

In the absence of Olympian Nethra Kumanan who missed the championship and trials as she had to visit the Prime Minister at a function, Vaishnavi at just 15 years cashed in and is heading for a convincing gold medal

She will however need to sail with Nethra in the next set of trials and that looks like a tough act to follow given her lack of experience in the Laser class as this is her first championship.

“ Vaishnavi May get two medals in two different classes and I cannot be more proud of her efforts “ , said her coach Suheim Sheikh.

Mirabai Chanu Sees The Possibilities Of Lifting Up The Community, The Country And Inspiring The Nation

New Delhi: With her latest win, Mirabai Chanu, the Indian weightlifter has left everyone astounded and proud. She has emerged as an inspiration and the motivation to be in sport for thousands of women across the nation.

Her exceptional win depicts her belief in rebellious optimism and seeing possibilities of not just being a weightlifter but also uplifting her community through the power of sport. And with this spirit of rebelliousness, she has created a ripple which has inspired women to not shy away from weightlifting. The world has always associated weightlifting as a sport for men, where women do not belong, despite the norm, Mirabai chose what she felt was her strength and passion and took it as a challenge and saw the possibilities of breaking this norm and so-called bias.

During her visit to the adidas store at The Promenade Mall in Vasant Kunj, Mirabai met young girls from the weightlifting community in Delhi, and spent time hearing out their aspirations, the challenges they face and what inspired them to take up weightlifting as a sport. She concluded the conversation by motivating the young girls by sharing her journey and experiences including many high and lows.

At the adidas store, Mirabai Chanu said, “My journey from a remote village to representing our country at an international sporting event, clearly showcases that sport doesn’t care about gender or stereotypes. In our society, weightlifting has always been perceived as a male dominated sport, it took a lot of courage and hard work to break such stereotypes. I want women to dream and believe in themselves to be able to see possibilities”.

On Mirabai’s recent victory, Sunil Gupta, Senior Director, brand adidas, India said, “We are extremely proud of Mirabai’s success, and it gives us immense pleasure to be a part of her incredible journey. Our aim is to enable all athletes including our partners to achieve their “impossible”by providing them with the best products in training and competition. I hope her success inspires young girls to believe in their dreams and see possibilities of fulfilling them.”

With her recent win, Mirabai has become the flagbearer of making the impossible possible for young girls and women across the country, inspiring them to be fearless and take to sport.

FC Goa sign promising defender Kunal Kundaikar on a three-year deal

Hyderabad: Kunal Kundaikar is a Gaur. FC Goa is delighted to announce that the Club has reached an agreement with Sporting Clube de Goa to secure the services of the promising young defender.

Kundaikar today put pen to paper on a three-year deal after FC Goa agreed to an undisclosed transfer fee with the Flaming Orange, a season after helping his former side win the Goa Pro League title in his first season with the club.

The 22-year-old will be given the chance to impress upon Juan Ferrando and will be involved with the first team for the pre-season.

A fan of Sergio Ramos, the youngster was delighted at completing the move, one which he describes as a dream come true.

“I have been an FC Goa fan. I have been to the Fatorda (Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru) Stadium on many occasions. I have lived the moments, the games and now to be able to have a chance at striding out onto the pitch like so many of my idols is a dream come true,” said the defender after completing the formalities.

FC Goa Director of Football, Ravi Puskur also commented on the latest addition to the squad. He said, “Kunal is a player who we’ve had on our radar for a fair bit of time. He has a number of qualities that we value in a player. He’s a young Goan player with a great future and has been a part of teams that have won the Taca de Goa and the Goa Pro League in recent seasons. In addition to his defensive qualities, he is composed on the ball and has a good passing range. We’re delighted to have signed him and we look forward to him growing with us.”

The young defender started his career with FC Neura, where he signed in 2014 as a part of their U18 team. Playing primarily as a winger, he shined in his very first season – especially in the inter-village tournaments playing for Goa Velha Sports Club.

Goa Velha signed him the very next season, where he played the GFA First Division (2nd tier in Goan footballing pyramid) for the side. Panjim Footballers and a chance at playing in the Goa Pro League came calling in 2016.

The next two seasons saw him transform from a winger to a defender capable of playing across the backline. He grew into one of the most important players in the side whilst winning the Taca Goa (GFA’s U20 tournament).

He signed for Sporting Clube de Goa in 2018, but was sent back on loan to Panjim Footballer for the next two seasons. The 2018/19 season saw Kundaikar win the Reliance Cup in Goa, playing for Fr. Agnel College, Pillar before again delivering the Taca Goa title.

The following season saw him named the captain for Panjim Footballers before securing a move to the Sporting side for the 2020/21 season. In his first season with the club, the youngster helped the side to a Goa Pro League title whilst being named ‘Defender of the Season’ at the club.

Was not sure if I should be happy about the bronze or be sad about the missed opportunity of another final: PV Sindhu on Olympic win

PV Sindhu made history as she became the first Indian woman and only the second India to win two individual medals at the Olympic Games on Sunday and the shuttler had a lot of emotions running through her as she bagged the bronze medal. She beat China’s He Bingjiao 21-13, 21-15 to bag her second Olympic medal. In an exclusive conversation with CNN-News18, she said that after the match she was not sure if she should be happy about the bronze or be sad about the missed opportunity of another final but in the end, she felt she did really well.
Sindhu said both Bingjiao and herself came to the match at the back of losses on Saturday and what was important for both of them was getting a medal for the country. “She played incredibly well from the start, there were some great rallies as well. I was calm and composed and gave my best. My opponent had been playing very well since the beginning. Overall, I am very happy that I got the bronze medal for India.”

Talking about the different experience in both the Olympics, the ace shuttler said, “In the previous Olympics, I was very young back then. People had no expectations. I was like a newcomer and I think that one was comparatively different. I compare them then definitely there was pressure and responsibilities. Everyone had lot of expectations. But I think this one also is comparatively very different – experience wise and game wise – because years have gone through. There were ups and downs, I had done really well, improved my game style but getting a medal here is definitely a wonderful moment for me. I’m very thankful.”

Sindhu was on her aggressive best throughout the match and remained in her zone as she beat Bingjiao in 53 minutes. Commenting on the game, she said, “It was very important for me to just be in the rally because I had to not make any mistakes because she was good. She was taking all my attacking strokes and it was very important for me to be patient enough to play the next stroke and just be in the in the match. First game, it was important to maintain that lead and even though she was covering, each and every point was important. In the second game, it was neck-to-neck but I had taken the lead for two-three points and I maintained that lead and finished it off.”

Sindhu said she was going to “enjoy this moment” as she and her family have worked hard for it. “It’s not sunk in yet so I am just going to be in the moment and enjoy it as much as I can because I’ve been waiting for this moment and it has finally come true. Getting a medal, any medal, I think, for the country it is a proud moment.”

The lockdown disrupted the training schedules of all the athletes. Sindhu said she was grateful to her family, the government, and the sports authorities because they supported her in whichever way she wanted. She dedicated this medal to all of them along with her fans.

Talking about her coach, she said she is very thankful to Mr. Park. “I’m very thankful to Mr. Park because in this pandemic he’s been there with me whole time, even he couldn’t go home because of these lockdowns. I’m sure he would be missing his family and but still every single day he was like – yes, we can do it and we’ve been focusing for this Olympics. So, finally we have together proved this that yes, we have done well. Definitely, the credit also goes to Mr Park because he worked hard as well.”

Revery raises US$2 million in pre-seed funding led by Sequoia Capital India’s Surge to revolutionise mental wellness through gaming – starting with sleep

Bengaluru – Gamified wellness company Revery today announced US$2 million in pre-seed funding led by Surge, a rapid scale-up program by Sequoia Capital India for startups in India and Southeast Asia. Revery is in beta stealth and has plans to launch globally later this year, starting with a focus on the US market.

Founders Tammie Siew and Khoa Tran started Revery to help others redefine the management of mental wellbeing by combining cognitive behavioural therapy with gameplay and technology. Drawing on mobile game concepts, Revery wants to make therapy interactive and fun, helping the focus on mental health to become part of a daily lifestyle.

Khoa Tran, Co-Founder and CTO of Revery
Khoa Tran, Co-Founder and CTO of Revery

Khoa was first inspired to develop this concept for sleep therapy, as he had first-hand experience on how poor sleep could cause troubling health problems. At the age of 15, Khoa was diagnosed with hypertension and a host of other conditions needing medication. It wasn’t until he was 26 that Khoa found out his poor sleep was the root cause. After correcting his sleep issues, his blood pressure is now normal and many of his previous conditions have improved.

The effects of chronic sleep loss are well researched, and countless studies have shown that a lack of sleep can increase the risk of mental disorders, cardiovascular disease, and serious health conditions like diabetes and dementia. In Asia, young adults get the least sleep compared to their peers in Europe, Middle East and America due to cultural habits, and higher work and educational demands. Options beyond medication are often limited and therapy can come with a steep price tag for many people who may not be able to afford ongoing care.

“Many people do not have the time or resources to access quality sleep and mental health care like I did. At Revery, we’re committed to raising awareness about the critical role that sleep plays in determining our wellbeing and how we can take charge of our health.” said Khoa Tran, Co-Founder and CTO of Revery.

“Roughly two out of three adults feel that they don’t sleep well, and there are less than 1,000 sleep therapists across the globe. We believe that tapping into the growing $90 billion mobile gaming market as a delivery vehicle is, pun intended, a game changer. This fundraise is the first step in scaling therapy for millions around the world who need it.” said Tammie Siew, Co-Founder and CEO of Revery.

Testament to Revery’s groundbreaking approach to addressing mental wellness is its team of expert advisors and investors that occupy the unique space between healthcare and gaming sectors. The medical advisory team includes leading behavioural sleep medicine expert, Dr Fiona Barwick, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences – Sleep Medicine Division at Stanford Medical; Dr Stanley Liu, Director of the Stanford Sleep Surgery Fellowship; and Dr Ryan Kelly, an award-winning researcher and acclaimed pioneer in video game research and development.

The fundraise is led by Sequoia Capital India’s Surge and includes participation from notable venture funds Pascal Capital, GGV Capital, zVentures and Patron. Angel investors include tech guru Kunal Shah, founder of one of India’s fastest growing unicorn startup, CRED; Sai Srinivas, founder of Mobile Premier League (MPL); Juha Paananen; Carolin Krenzer; Albert Lee, who previously co-founded MyFitnessPal before it sold to UnderArmour in 2015; and Josh Lee.

“We are excited about the growing mental wellness market, and believe that Revery’s unique mobile game-based approach has the opportunity to create immense impact,” Jenny Lee, Managing Partner of GGV Capital, commented. “We are happy to back such a mission-driven team in this space.”

“We know that mental wellness is a major concern for youth and millennials, and that gamification helps increase engagement and efficacy. As the world’s leading lifestyle brand for gamers, most of whom are youth and millennials, Razer is supportive of Revery’s efforts to gamify therapy and improve lives,” said Cho Weihao, Investment Director at Razer zVentures.

Revery was founded in March 2021 by Singaporean Tammie Siew and Vietnamese-American Khoa Tran. Tammie has worked at the Boston Consulting Group and Sequoia Capital India, where she was the first female investment advisor for Sequoia in Southeast Asia. She also spearheaded a volunteer research mental health project for Better.sg, a tech for good non-profit in Singapore. Khoa worked as a data scientist at a fashion technology startup, a software engineer at Samsung, and a product manager at Google before starting Revery.

Tammie and Khoa are joined by Head of Game Design for Revery, Kriti Sawa, who has a decade of game design leadership experience from Zynga and King, and engineering lead Stephanie Wong, who was a software engineer at several startups and has designed for the Smithsonian and Fine Arts Museums Of San Francisco.

Revery is part of Surge’s fifth cohort of 23 companies that have developed new digital solutions to help companies and individuals work, live and learn better in a rapidly evolving Southeast Asian landscape.
