World No Tobacco Day: Pledge together to “Commit to Quit”

Dr. P. Vijay Karan Reddy, Consultant Radiation Oncologist,  Apollo Cancer Institutes, Hyderabad.

The problems caused by tobacco consumption were never a secret. However, the atrocities caused by COVID-19 in recent years has motivated more and more people to quit tobacco and lead a healthy life.

Tobacco causes over 8 million deaths every year. 28.6% percent of population in India, that is 1 in every 5 use smokeless tobacco and 1 in every 10 people smoke, which is a very alarming number.  In order to reduce these numbers, and to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic WHO started World No Tobacco Day and it is celebrated around the world every year on May 31.

Tobacco affects every single cell in our body and the consumers end up facing the risk of severe respiratory or heart diseases. Tobacco causes almost all cancers either directly or indirectly. It is the leading cause of lung cancer and possibly the only causative factor to cancer that has been conclusively proven- increases the risk to more than 50 percent. Other common cancers include head and neck cancers, specifically throat cancer and mouth cancer. Related to the present pandemic, smokers also have a 50% higher chance of developing severe issues due to Coronavirus disease with increased risk of hospitalization and need for a ventilator.

The silver lining is that it is preventable and in many cases the damage is reversible. So, quitting and motivating people to quit is one of the best things anyone can do to keep themselves safe and healthy.

Quitting is not an easy task. Cravings and urges for tobacco can be very powerful. However, with sheer determination and external support, one can always commit and win against the addiction. As Edith Zittler said,

“The best way to stop smoking is to just stop – no ifs, ands or butts.”

This World No Tobacco Day, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has launched the “Commit to Quit” Campaign to help 100 million people wanting to quit. Under the campaign, they have strategized various initiatives to support people wanting to quit.

  3. Remove tobacco products from your environment
  4. Lastly, the most important step – curb your cravings

QUICK TIPS TO CURB YOUR CRAVINGS:

  2. Deep breathing:  Take a deep breath for 10 secs which will help you reduce your anxiety
  3. Drink water: Drink a lot of water
  4. Do something else to distract yourself: Go for a walk, watch tv, play a sport, spend time with family
  5. Pharmacotherapy – WHO recommends the use of nicotine patches and gums but they are more effective when prescribed by your doctor based on your dependence.

Benefits of quitting:

  1. 20 min –  your heart rate drops
  2. 2 weeks upto 3 months – Your heart attack risk begins to drop Your lung function begins to improve
  3. 1 yr upto 5 yrs –  Your added risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker’s
  4. 10 yrs – Your lung cancer death rate is about half that of a smoker’s
  5. 15 yrs  – Your risk of coronary heart disease is back to that of a non-smoker

SRMAP student P Mohan Aditya awarded with copyright for the design of Biodegradable “Face Shield for Humans”

When the Covid-19 outbreak crippled the world, P Mohan Aditya, a 3rd-year Mechanical Engineering student from SRM University, AP, took giant steps into developing the highly useful face shield made from bio-degradable substances. He named it “Facial Shield 2.0, as it was an improved version of the ordinary face shields. The innovative features added to it helped him to earn the copyright to his credit. On May 16, 2020, Aditya filed an application on the face shield design under the IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) with Indian Patent Office located in Kolkata, India. In 2021, a copyright was granted for the” Face Shield for Humans” with a Design Application Number of 329364 – 001.

The face shield 2.0 serves as the outer defence to the mucous membranes (nose, eyes, and mouth), come with a transparent visor made of the thin layer of 175-micron reusable plastic and a highly durable headband made from 3 ply corrugated cardboard. The cardboard’s bursting strength is 16kg/sq.cm, which is quite durable yet lightweight. Due to the use of biodegradable materials, the price of the face shield at an affordable cost of INR 15. The face shield 2.0 is adjustable and suitable for all head sizes made with firm elastic for comfortable wear without hurting the head.

Shri Adimulapu Suresh, Minister for Education, State of Andhra Pradesh and MP, appreciated the student’s efforts in the Secretariat’s premises. Aditya received high accolades from the guests present on his first successful invention. They also distributed face shields among state police officers, paramedics, and other frontline workers deployed in the containment areas.

In conversation with P Mohan Aditya, he says, “With an increasing environmental degradation, we should move to the eco-friendly alternatives to develop products/services. Therefore, I thought to develop the face shields from reusable plastics and cardboard, which is easily degradable. He also corrugated, “After discovering a shortage in the supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) globally, an idea struck my mind. Immediately I started researching on developing a piece of standard equipment to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. I am thankful Mr. Ravi, attorney of SRM-AP who supported me throughout the tough times by answering all doubts amidst challenging circumstances.”

Aditya’s invention turned out to be a successful project both for the University and the public. The leadership team of SRM University, AP – Dr P Sathyanarayanan, President, Prof V S Rao, Vice-Chancellor, and Prof D Narayana Rao, Pro Vice-Chancellor celebrated Aditya’s rousing success by congratulating him on developing the face shield by making use of new technology.

Using the CAD software, Aditya designed the transparent visor of the face shield and manufactured the remaining headband using the CNC machine. The CAD model was used as the input to the CNC machine, Following the design, the CNC machine analyzed and cut the cardboard and transparent sheet accordingly.

P Mohan Aditya’s another innovative design on “building block for bed” was applied for copyright on 09-08-2020. The building block for beds is again an innovative work of making beds using reusable materials for COVID 19 patients. He and his team also successfully created an electric bicycle using a 24V 250Watt DC motor powered by a 12V and 12Ah battery in the previous team assignment. Qandle launches Touchless Attendance app ‘Qandle Touchless’ for HR

New Delhi, 29 May, 2021: Qandle – an HRMS startup, has launched a new solution ‘Qandle Touchless’ that helps to mark employees’ attendance while eliminating the need to touch any common surfaces. The idea behind the solution is to give an alternative to Biometric or Card based attendance systems to organisations. Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, using such attendance systems requiring physically touching a common device can be very risky and spread germs faster.

Qandle Touchless actually includes an array of 4 different solutions to track attendance without the need for employees to touch any common surface, while increasing the accuracy of measurement. Through Qandle Touchless, the brand is offering significant convenience and safety to both employees and the HR teams.

The first solution is to mark attendance through the use of QR codes. The application allows generation of a unique QR code for each employee, which can then be used to track their attendance by displaying the codes to Qandle’s QR Code Attendance Reader app. This solution makes tracking attendance particularly easy for organisations that house a large number of blue collar employees.

The second solution is to IP restrict the attendance of employees. Through this, employees can mark their attendance using their laptops, but only when it is connected to a particular Wi-fi or Internet network.

The third and fourth solutions involve using the Qandle app to geo-fence or geo-tag the attendance measurement. With these, it becomes easy to determine and restrict the geographic areas and boundaries in which attendance can be marked by employees through their own mobile phones. These solutions are particularly useful for companies which have their employees distributed across many smaller regional or sales offices, or those where employees have to be on the field. These solutions significantly minimize the challenges of attendance proxies by employees.

These solutions can be used in conjunction with each other to provide a complete Touchless Attendance solution. For example, an organization can use the IP restricted option for employees in the Head Quarters, the geo-tagged option for employees working from home, the geo-fenced attendance for the employees in the regional offices, and the QR code option for the workers in their factories.

“With the launch of Qandle Touchless, we are ensuring the replacement of touch based attendance systems with solutions that actually work. Solutions like selfie attendance and facial recognition sound good but can be easily gamed using photographs of employees. In the current challenging scenario, HRs are constantly looking for solutions to manage and monitor the workforce better. We, at Qandle, are constantly innovating to provide them with the right solutions that do not compromise on accuracy or performance,” said Mr. Chayan Mukhopadhyay, Co-founder, and CEO of Qandle.

The platform aims to serve over 500 new organizations through the Qandle Touchless solution. The brand had recently launched ‘Qanbot’ – AI-powered HR bot solution which helps automate daily HR tasks of employees, and received an overwhelming response from its users. Qandle has been working relentlessly towards automating all the recurrent and manual HR and admin tasks in various organizations to the maximum extent, in order to allow bandwidth to the HR department to work more on strategic tasks.

Qandle Users can download the Qandle Touchless app from Google Play Store – https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.qandle.touchless&hl=en_IN&gl=US

Häfele Discoveries

Häfele Discoveries: The Journey Continues

We embarked on an unusual Journey this year with an exhibition that was nothing like what we have done in the past – Häfele Discoveries. The experience was as new to us as it must have been for you, since we are so used to being at a physical Häfele booth, having conversations around live display settings. And so we created Häfele Discoveries, an online platform showcasing an exclusive product selection for Interzum, put together through interactive 3-dimensional display settings, to give you a truly exceptional digital experience.

While the Häfele Discoveries platform was created as a parallel exhibition run to the Interzum@home online trade fair between 4th to 7th May, Häfele is happy to inform you that this platform will be kept open to all customers till the end of this year. So we welcome you to visit or revisit us any time you want as per your convenience, in the coming days, weeks or even months. We will be happy to attend to you and take you through the different themes and product worlds from the Häfele portfolio.

And for the very first time, you can also see some innovative solutions from our Indian range through a special Hot-folder showcase on the Discoveries Platform. Take some time out to see our space-optimizing bed and furniture fittings that will give you a host of ideas on how to better plan the space within your homes or other interior places. Our range of built-in, freestanding and countertop home appliances showcased in detail in the hot-folder section will inspire you to add more convenience and utility to your kitchens and homes. You can also look through our newly launched range of profiles for different door applications to get aesthetic and functional ideas for different rooms within your homes. And this is just the start – there is a lot more to see, discover and absorb. We will continue to update this hot-folder section with latest product launches at Häfele India in the coming months.
