Huawei, TM Forum, and Eight Carriers Jointly Release New-Generation Intelligent Operations White Paper 2.0

Copenhagen, Denmark, June 20, 2024 – At Digital Transformation World (DTW) 2024, Huawei, together with the event organizer TM Forum and eight carriers including Orange, HKT, and China Mobile, released the New-Generation Intelligent Operations White Paper 2.0. They also discussed the new technical features of intelligent operations transformation and shared their application practices.

Lucas Lu, President of Huawei ICT Assurance and Operations Services, explained that White Paper 2.0 explores how to use generative AI (GenAI) and other emerging technologies, value systems, and measurement metrics to promote operations transformation. The purpose is to enhance network quality, reduce revenue loss, and improve customer satisfaction, he said.

New Value: Service-oriented Value System Becomes Driving Force for Transformation

Kevin Ye, President of Huawei’s Intelligent Operation Domain, emphasized that as transformation develops, new systems for value and metrics are required to measure achievements in transformation. In the New-Generation Intelligent Operations White Paper 2.0, Huawei proposes a new value system and measurement metrics for service-centric operations. The purpose is to support resource investment decision-making and measure achievements in transformation. The new value system, which starts from business results, measures achievements in transformation through not only effectiveness, but also revenue, innovation, and customer satisfaction.

New Technologies: GenAI, EDNS, and DTN Become Accelerators for Transformation

In White Paper 2.0, the digital twin network (DTN) is used to enhance accurate real-time awareness and simulation in complex scenarios. The Expected Demand Not Served (EDNS) algorithm framework is used to evaluate any impact on services and support decision-making for resource investment and network recovery priorities. GenAI empowers operations roles and scenarios, and develops role-based Copilots and scenario-based AI Agents.

New Applications: Service Loss Reduction and Innovative Applications Become Incubators for Transformation Scenarios

Huawei has developed new application scenarios by leveraging these emerging technologies. For consumers, Huawei, together with XL Axiata Indonesia, has developed services regarding service loss reduction and restoration by using EDNS. For business customers, Huawei, together with China Mobile, performs association analysis on network and service status through proactive monitoring and GenAI-based operations assistants. These new applications improve user satisfaction while reducing revenue loss.

Huawei Launches a Wide Range of Net5.5G Solutions to Inspire New Growth of Carriers

Barcelona, Spain, February 28, 2024, During MWC Barcelona 2024, the Net5.5G-oriented products and solutions were launched by the President of Huawei’s Data Communication Product Line, Leon Wang. He noted that new ultra-broadband applications such as immersive terminals and AIGC have brought new opportunities to carriers. In addition, networks need to continuously evolve towards the future. In 2023, Huawei and industry partners defined the Net5.5G target network architecture and key capabilities such as ubiquitous 10 Gbps access, 400GE converged transport, hyper-converged data centers, and network autonomy and self-optimization. At this event, centering on “Bringing Net5.5G into Reality, Inspire New Growth”, Huawei has launched four solutions tailored to Net5.5G, covering mobile backhaul, enterprise campus, converged transport, and data center network, to fully support carriers’ business success.

Net5.5G Mobile Backhaul: Ultra-broadband is the foundation of ultimate experience. The access ring of mobile backhaul needs to be upgraded to 100GE to meet the traffic requirements of ultra-broadband applications. In addition, experience optimization is required to provide better mobile experience and improve the ARPU. Huawei’s base station routers provide the comprehensive access capabilities with 25/50/100/400GE to achieve network construction with optimal TCO. This solution is compatible with 4G, 5G, and 5G-A transport, protecting investment. Leveraging Network Digital Map, the solution provides industry leading application-level experience visualization and optimization, achieving zero congestion for VIP services and accelerating user experience monetization.

Net5.5G High-Quality 10 Gbps Campus: Carriers are expanding their scope of services from traditional private lines to enterprise campus networks. This opens up a new blue ocean for digital managed network services, enriches B2B product portfolios, and increases revenue. Huawei has launched the world’s first all-scenario Wi-Fi 7 series products. And it helps carriers improve their competitive edge and avoid homogenized competition through high-density access, video experience assurance and intelligent O&M with Network Digital Map, accelerating their transformation from ISPs to MSPs.

Net5.5G Converged Transport: By providing more services on one network, carriers can realize new values of private lines and private networks. Huawei provides high density 400GE covering metro and core to carry numerous 10Gbps connections. Tenant-level slicing private lines, low-latency path selection, and application-level visualization are used to implement network servitization, accelerate network resource monetization, and increase revenue.

Net5.5G Hyper-Converged DCN: The computing power leasing service can help carriers achieve new growth in addition to IDC equipment room and private cloud services. Huawei uses the high density 800GE data center network (DCN) to provide efficient computing power and plug-and-play, significantly reduced deployment time. The industry leading NSLB algorithm increases the network throughput from 50% to 98% and improves the training efficiency by 20%.

Leon Wang wrapped up the launch with the following parting words:

“Huawei will work with industry partners to promote network evolution from conceptualization to deployment, bring Net5.5G into reality, and inspire new growth for carriers.”

Huawei Announces New Inventions That Will Revolutionize AI, 5G, and User Experience

Huawei announced a batch of key inventions as part of its biennial “Top Ten Inventions” Awards at the “Broadening the Innovation Landscape 2022” forum held at its Shenzhen headquarters. The award is designed to recognize inventions that could create new series of products, become important commercial features of existing products, or that generate considerable value for the company and the industry.

The awarded inventions range from an adder neural network that significantly reduces power consumption and circuit area to a game-changing “optical iris” that provides a unique identifier for optical fibers. It is designed to help carriers manage their network resources, cutting time and costs associated with broadband deployment.

The announcement came in the context of intellectual property rights, the protection and sharing of which Huawei believes is critical to the tech ecosystem.

“Protecting IP is key to protecting innovation,” said Huawei’s Chief Legal Officer, Song Liuping. “We are eager to license our patents and technologies to share our innovations with the world. This will help broaden the innovation landscape, drive our industry forward, and advance technology for everyone,” he added.

“Huawei is constantly changing itself, and constantly showcasing to the world the value of IP from China,” said Tian Lipu, President of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property’s China Chapter.

By the end of 2021, Huawei held more than 110,000 active patents across over 45,000 patent families. It has more granted patents than any other Chinese company, has filed the most patent applications with the EU Patent Office, and ranked fifth in terms of new patents granted in the United States. For five straight years, Huawei has ranked No. 1 worldwide in terms of Patent Cooperation Treaty applications.

Alan Fan, Head of Huawei’s IPR Department, said the value of Huawei patents has seen wide recognition in the industry, especially in mainstream standards such as cellular technology, Wi-Fi, and audio/video codecs.

“In the past five years, more than two billion smartphones have been licensed to Huawei’s 4G/5G patents. And for cars, about eight million connected vehicles licensed to Huawei patents are being delivered to the consumers every year,” Fan said.

Huawei is also working actively with patent license administration companies in offering “one-stop” licenses for mainstream standards.

“Over 260 companies—accounting for one billion devices—have obtained Huawei’s HEVC patent licenses through a patent pool,” Fan said. He added that the company is in discussions to establish a new patent pool to give the industry “quick access” to Huawei’s patents for Wi-Fi devices worldwide.

Huawei is also discussing joint licensing programs for 5G patents with licensing experts and other leading industry patentees.

Liu Hua, Director of World Intellectual Property Organization Office in China, praised Huawei’s sustained focus on innovation, saying: “We look forward to seeing Huawei continue to take part in high-level global competition with innovation at its core.”

For Manuel Desantes, former Vice President of European Patent Office, given the vast number of changes in the world these days, what matters most is no longer the number of registered patents or inventions. “The IP system should assure that the creations that merit protection are those that bring actual value,” he said.

This marked the third innovation and IP-themed event Huawei has hosted on its innovation practices. Every year, Huawei invests over 10% of its sales revenue into R&D.

In terms of R&D expenditure, Huawei ranked second in the 2021 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard. In 2021, the company increased its R&D investment to CNY142.7 billion, representing 22.4% of our total revenue. Over the past decade, Huawei’s total R&D investment surpassed CNY845 billion.

Huawei: Industry-Academia Collabs Key to “Top Challenges” and Talent Cultivation

William Xu, Huawei’s Director of the Board and Chair of the Scientist Advisory Committee, was invited to deliver an online speech entitled “Industry-Academia Collaboration for Joint Innovation and Talent Cultivation” at Times Higher Education’s Asia Universities Summit. In this speech, he shared the approaches and practices adopted by Huawei during its collaboration with universities on innovation, joint research, talent cultivation, and tech competitions.

“Huawei works with universities to build open and innovative platforms for joint research and talent cultivation. Through the dual drivers of vision and application research, the industry and academia work together to define ‘top challenges’ and conduct innovation. These efforts are aimed at resolving the problems facing the industry and making groundbreaking achievements,” said William Xu. He added that Huawei invested US$400 million into university collaboration in 2021 and intends to invest more for deeper collaboration in the future.

Mr. Xu outlined Huawei’s approach to collaborating with universities. He explained that the first step was to build an open and innovative platform for joint research and talent cultivation. Universities are lighthouses for the industry, and they should devote themselves to basic research and address long-term challenges through inventions from 0 to 1. Meanwhile, the industry should use its advantages in engineering to overcome both engineering and industrialization challenges that arise across various scenarios. In addition, universities, research institutes, and businesses should align their definitions of “top challenges”. This will help them reach a consensus on industry vision and challenges and explore next-generation technologies. The dual drivers of vision and application research will lead the industry and academia to conduct research into basic theories and advanced technologies, as well as across domains. Working side by side, we can ensure that our research and talent keep up with the latest developments.

Huawei works with over 300 universities and 900 research institutes worldwide. In 2021, it invested US$400 million in university collaboration. The industry can work with universities on course and program design, joint talent training, and tech competitions, to identify and cultivate talent at numerous levels. From the industry’s perspective, Mr. Xu proposes five actions for industry-academia collaboration:

(1) Continue supporting breakthroughs in basic research and technology, and continuous industry innovation.

(2) Work together to set and solve problems and make breakthroughs to overcome key industry challenges.

(3) Work together to optimize the design of programs and courses, and drive industry-academia alignment to cultivate urgently needed talent.

(4) Work together to encourage innovation by building platforms like joint labs, tech competitions, Chaspark, Seeds for the Future, and post-doctoral research programs, in order to identify and cultivate talent.

(5) Strengthen talent exchanges between universities and the industry to promote transitions from theory to practice.

Huawei identifies and cultivates top talent by supporting international tech competitions, expanding the horizons of students who participate in such competitions, and proposing top challenges. In addition, Huawei works closely with China’s Ministry of Education on course and program design, high-level talent training, outstanding engineer training, reconstruction of key national labs, the release of industry challenges, and the creation of a collaborative, intelligent industry-university base for talent cultivation.

Huawei partners NUS Business Analytics Centre to nurture, upskill and provide students with industry internship opportunities

Global leading information and communications technology (ICT) provider Huawei International has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National University of Singapore Business Analytics Centre (NUS BAC) as part of its commitment to nurture talent and upskill students to help fill the talent gap in the technology sector.

Huawei and NUS BAC seek to deepen the understanding of big data, cloud computing, and business analytics technologies, and their applications to the digital transformation of enterprises. This collaboration aims to empower students and researchers, giving them the opportunity to tap into Huawei’s expertise in ICT technology, software development and resources.

Jointly formed by the NUS School of Computing and NUS Business School, NUS BAC offers the Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) programme.

Huawei will be providing cloud and analytics training workshops, as well as capstone internship opportunities with its partners, allowing students to gain deep insight and embark on highly sought-after hands-on experiences with industry leaders. The MSBA students will also benefit from the cloud computing resources provided by Huawei.

In addition, NUS BAC will organise a Huawei-NUS analytics innovation challenge for students and researchers in the developer community to create innovative solutions for problem statements based on realistic business challenges from Huawei and its partners.

Huawei Joins MANRS to Boost Global Internet Security

Geneva, Switzerland: Huawei became a founding member of the Equipment Vendor Program (EVP) of the Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security (MANRS), in an effort to actively improve global Internet security.

MANRS is a global initiative fostered by the Internet Society (ISOC). It aims to provide crucial fixes to reduce the most common routing threats, such as Internet route hijacking, route leakage, and address spoofing through cooperation among carriers, IXPs, CDN & cloud providers, equipment vendors, and policy decision makers. Ultimately, it aims to improve Internet security and resilience. The MANRS EVP is a new program for equipment vendors, following the Network Operator Program, IXP Program, and CDN and Cloud Program.

“Huawei, a worldwide leader in network equipment, is leading by example through their active contributions to the new MANRS Equipment Vendor Program,” said Andrei Robachevsky, Senior Director, Technology Programs for the ISOC. “Along with other founding participants in the program, Huawei’s involvement shows the importance network equipment vendors have in Internet routing security, and we hope it will motivate more members of the Internet infrastructure community to continue to make advancements to a more secure Internet for everyone.”

“Routing security is crucial to Internet security, and that includes network devices (e.g., routers and IXP switches), the foundation of the Internet,” said Hank Chen, President of Router Domain, Data Communication Product Line, Huawei. “Over the years, Huawei has dedicated itself to building secure and reliable network devices and has extensive capabilities and experience in the field,” he added. Huawei reaches license agreement with Volkswagen’s supplier, marking the company’s largest automotive licensing deal

Huawei today announced it has reached a license agreement with a supplier of Volkswagen Group (“Volkswagen”).

The agreement includes a license under Huawei’s 4G standard essential patents (SEPs), which covers Volkswagen vehicles equipped with wireless connectivity. This agreement marks Huawei’s largest licensing deal in the automotive industry.

Song Liuping, Chief Legal Officer of Huawei, says: “As an innovative company, we own a leading patent portfolio for wireless technologies, which creates great value for the automotive industry. We are pleased that key players from the automotive industry recognize that value. We believe this license will benefit worldwide consumers with our advanced technology.”

Huawei expects more than 30 million vehicles to be licensed under its patents based on existing license agreements.

Over the past 20 years, Huawei has entered into more than 100 patent license agreements with major global companies across Europe, the United States, Japan, and South Korea. Huawei will continue to bring digital connectivity to more vehicles globally to establish a fully connected, intelligent world.

 

ICT Industry not the cause but the solution of rapidly increasing power consumption

Huawei hosted a webinar comprising an expert panel of a cross section of leaders to discuss sustainability in the energy sector. The speakers included Annika Hedberg, Head of Sustainable Prosperity for Europe Programme, European Policy Centre (EPC), Professor Robert Lee, Professor of Law, University of Birmingham, Jürgen Tzschoppe, Executive Vice President International Power, Statkraft and Dr René Arnold, Vice President Public Affairs Strategy, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. The panel discussed that while the proliferation of new digital devices, interconnected high-speed networks, data storage centers, and electric vehicles in our lives have increased the demand for power exponentially, the world also needs to acknowledge that new ICT technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), improved data analytics, energy grids, new methods for delivering and managing energy storage and delivery can in fact make energy systems around the world cleaner, more efficient and lead to significant productivity gains. Furthermore, the panel agreed that a system of comprehensive solutions would be critical to achieve carbon emission targets.

Speaking on how energy transformation can help fight climate change, Annika Hedberg, Head of Sustainable Prosperity for Europe Programme, European Policy Centre (EPC) said, “The pandemic has most definitely had a huge impact on how businesses operate, leading to a temporary downturn of fossil fuels consumption and carbon emissions. But there is also a huge risk. If we do not use the crisis in locking down some key strategies in fighting climate change, we will come out of this period, emitting even more greenhouse gases. The good news is that we already have some fantastic ICT solutions in place – AI, internet of things (IoT), blockchain that can help transform the sector while protecting our ecosystem.”

Professor Robert Lee, Professor of Law, University of Birmingham touched upon the need to talk about the social responsibility regarding energy consumption.

“ICT is a wonderfully innovative sector, but it is as important to use the innovations responsibly. We have already seen how ICT has helped substitute travel in a post pandemic world. Dematerialization where we use innovative technologies to consume less materials, breakthroughs in energy storage and management all have vast potential to bring more sustainability. In the end though, it is not only about innovative technologies but sustainable consumption that is as important – i.e. what you and I can do. Behavioral change lays at the heart of achieving our net zero goals,” he said.

Jürgen Tzschoppe, Executive Vice President International Power, Statkraft addressed the value of application of renewable energy and said, “New electricity will come from renewables. This is not a one-way road, and we will reverse the trend and fight back climate change. In fact, unprecedented technology changes in the renewables sector have made solar and wind power two of the most economically viable powers to produce today. Technology has helped on two levels – in making production cheaper, smarter and of less risk to people and in running and managing the plant and/or system.”

Dr René Arnold, Vice President Public Affairs Strategy, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. busted the myth that energy consumption is particularly high in the ICT industry. While acknowledging that the increase in data centers and wireless sites has led to an increase in energy demand, Dr. René highlighted the importance of energy digitalization to increase efficiency and reduce high operation and maintenance costs. He said, “There is no denying that the explosive acceleration into everything digital is creating more energy hungry devices and applications but at the crux of it, it’s about how we use digital technologies to our advantage to foster economic progress and growth, while meeting sustainability targets. Leveraging the potential of ICT to transform the sector is huge and we at Huawei are committed towards this end to create an overall positive impact for industry and our planet.”

Huawei Releases White Paper on Innovation and Intellectual Property 2020

Huawei released a new white paper on innovation and intellectual property, at the Forum on Innovation and IP Prospects in 2021 and Beyond held at the company’s Shenzhen headquarters. This paper focuses on Huawei’s history in innovation and intellectual property (IP) management prior to 2010 and includes data and milestones related to their investment and R&D that spans back to the 1990s.

Huawei’s Chief Legal Officer Song Liuping stated at the forum, “We want to show the history of our innovation over the past 30 years and our long-term commitment to respecting, protecting, and contributing to IP. With this white paper, we want you to better understand how Huawei has become what it is today.”

Huawei states in the paper that it has become one of the world’s largest patent holders through sustained investment in innovation. By the end of 2020, Huawei held over 100,000 active patents in more than 40,000 patent families worldwide.

Jason Ding, Head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Rights Department, said, “Innovation has been at the core of Huawei’s business since the company was founded. Our 2020 white paper lists the number of patent applications Huawei filed, or our R&D and innovation activities, in the late 90s and early 2000s.” He also stated, “Huawei’s worldwide patent applications were on par with other industry leaders in the early 2000s, and Huawei’s success today is a result of its long-term investment in innovation and R&D.”

Huawei filed its first patent application in China back in 1995, and its first patent application in the US in 1999. In 2008, the World Intellectual Property Organization listed Huawei as No. 1 in terms of number of patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) for the first time. In 2019, Huawei ranked No. 2 in Europe and No. 10 in the US in terms of the number of patents granted. Huawei is also the largest patent holder in China.

Ding noted that Huawei estimates it will receive about 1.2 to 1.3 billion US dollars in revenue from patent licensing between 2019 and 2021. He also announced that for every multi-mode 5G smartphone, Huawei will provide a reasonable percentage royalty rate of the handset selling price, and a per unit royalty cap at US$2.5.

“Huawei has been the largest technical contributor to 5G standards, and follows fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) principles when it comes to patent licensing,” added Ding, “we hope that the royalty rate we announced today will increase 5G adoption by giving 5G implementers a more transparent cost structure that will inform their investment decisions moving forward.”

Francis Gurry, former Director General of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), also spoke at the event saying, “In releasing its license fee structure for 5G standard essential patents (SEPs), Huawei is promoting the widespread adoption and use of standards designed to ensure interoperability, reliability and transparent competition, while at the same time providing a fair return for investment in R&D.”

Song stated that Huawei will regularly announce further innovation and IP activities so that the public can better understand Huawei’s innovation practices. This will be part of the company’s broader initiative to be more open and transparent with the public.

EU Ranks Huawei Among Top Three Global Innovators

Huawei ranks third in the 2020 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard. This is a jump of two places for Huawei compared to last year when the company ranked 5th in the 2019 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard.

The 2020 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard is a European Commission publication. It ranks the research investment levels of 2500 companies around the world that comprise 90% of the world’s business-funded R&D. The report was prepared by the EU Joint Research Centre (JRC).

“The EU confirms that Huawei is now among the top three innovative global companies. To maintain the European way of life for its future generations, Europe will need to use the best technologies and innovations. Huawei stands ready to team up with Europe for a joint bright future,” said Abraham Liu, Huawei’s Chief Representative to the EU Institutions.

Much of the global research that Huawei carries out takes place in Europe. Huawei set up its first research centre in Sweden in the year 2000. Today, through a series of partnerships with over 150 European universities, Huawei is deeply embedded within the ICT research ecosystem in Europe. Through this collaborative research activity, Huawei makes Europe fit for the digital age.

Huawei believes that international research collaboration strengthens EU competitiveness and contributes to climate change mitigation, thus strategically supporting the European Green Deal.
