BIPF’s ‘Professor Ghanashyam Dash Scholarship’ (PGDS) 2023 awardees felicitated

Bhubaneswar, 5th July 2024: Bansidhar & Ila Panda Foundation (BIPF), the social development arm of Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys Limited (IMFA) felicitated the recipients of the ‘Professor Ghanashyam Dash Scholarship for Higher Education’ (PGDS) for the academic year 2023-2024 today.

Every year the PGDS annual scholarship is awarded to six meritorious students (domicile of Odisha) to facilitate higher education in the fields of engineering, medicine and liberal arts across India. In the 19th edition of the PGDS initiative, four students—Mr. K.V.M Prassana Kumar, Mr. Priyanshu Panda, Mr. Himanshu Sekhar Patra, and Ms. Priyanka Dalai—have been awarded scholarships to pursue engineering at IIIT Dharwad, IIT Madras, IGIT Sarang, and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, respectively. Additionally, Mr. Prayas Rout and Ms. Abhipsa Chowdhury have been awarded scholarships to pursue medicine at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

The students were felicitated in the esteemed presence of Guest of Honour, Executive Director & CEO of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Biswas; Trustee & Founder CEO of Bansidhar & Ila Panda Foundation, Ms. Shaifalika Panda, along with other distinguished senior officials from BIPF.

The PGDS initiative covers upto 90% of the academic fees and eligible expenses for selected candidates. It reserves a maximum of INR 6 lakhs per awardee to support the students in completing their four-year professional studies.

Beyond financial support, recipients are also eligible for ‘Utsah,’ an exclusive mentorship program run by BIPF. Through this program, students receive mentorship from IMFA executives, providing regular counseling, moral support, academic guidance, networking opportunities, and assistance in realizing their full potential for a well-planned career trajectory.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Shaifalika Panda- Trustee & Founder CEO, Bansidhar & Ila Panda Foundation, elaborated, “Education has the power to transform. The PGDS was instituted with the aim to contribute to a progressive-inclusive-equitable society where ‘no one is left behind’. This opportunity allows our recipients to unleash themselves from the shackles of their socio-economic barriers onto their journey of professional success.”

Furthermore, Guest of Honour, Prof (Dr) Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, emphasized that true success stems from integrity and values, and said, “While academic excellence is crucial, it is your societal contributions that will determine your lasting achievements. Balance your academic pursuits with nurturing humanity and actively serve the community to make a meaningful impact.”

Instituted in 2005 by IMFA, this scholarship is named after the renowned historian Late Prof. Ghanashyam Dash, father of late Mrs. Ila Panda. It aims to provide equal opportunity through financial assistance to meritorious students and facilitate higher education. PGDS 2024 application process will begin in August 2024 through the BIPF website.

Xavier University, Bhubaneswar: International Doctoral Congress for Media Scholars

Xavier University’s School of Communications in association with the doctoral program office of the university is organized a virtual two-day Doctoral Congress in Mass Communication (DoCoMaCo 2021) starting April 10.
The online Doctoral Congress in Mass Communication 2021 (DoCoMaCo) is a platform for doctoral scholars to participate and present their ongoing research with peers, scholars, and professors. It offers doctoral scholars a unique possibility to present and discuss their research directions, share their ideas, receive feedback, and exchange comments, create a research network and views on their work in an academic community of fellow scholars.
The inaugural event of the doctoral congress was helmed by Dr V Vijay Kumar, the Convenor, and the Acting Dean of School of Communications, who welcomed all the dignitaries and participants. He said that the program aims to support the research endeavour of media scholars. Dr Rahul Thakurta, Associate Dean (Doctoral Program), Xavier University, and Chair of the doctoral congress, gave the introductory speech and emphasized the importance of such an event encouraging scholars to present their ongoing research and receive valuable feedback.

In his inaugural address Prof Dr Fr Antony R Uvari, SJ the Chief Patron of the congress and the Vice-Chancellor of Xavier University Bhubaneswar emphasis to ‘question the question’ that enhances the quality of research. He encouraged scholars to research the media and its service to the nation and people.

Prof Fr E A Augustine, SJ, Registrar, Xavier University, and Co-Patron of the event, stressed the quality of doctoral work which could be gauged by the selection of only 25% of the papers received for the congress. Dr Fr V Arokiyadass, SJ, Chief Finance Officer, Xavier University, and Co-patron of the event, delved on the significance of media inculcating value and truth in society.

The session was also addressed by eminent international academicians. Prof. Dr Sundeep R. Muppidi, Professor of Communication, Special Assistant Provost for Strategic Initiatives, in University of Hartford, West Hartford, USA and also serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Asia Pacific Media Educator talked directly to the researchers when he said, “Select an area that you are passionate about. What it is that you are learning to be an expert at?” He also pointed at the inter-disciplinary nature of communication studies. He concluded his speech by saying, “There should not be anyone better than you in your sub-area of studies. One should think of you only to be an expert in a specific area.”

Prof. Dr Daya Thussu, Professor of International Communication, Department of Journalism, School of Communication of Hong Kong Baptist University in China and serves as the managing editor, of Global Media and Communication journal, added on to Prof Muppidi’s speech when he said, “The young researchers these days should stop being obsessed with the visual media and go back to texts.” He put across his main argument by saying, “Push the envelope with your study of research and develop an enriching work.” Dr Jyoti Ranjan Sahoo, faculty of, School of Communications, Xavier University, extended his gratitude towards all the experts and participants. Around 15 research works will be presented in the two-day event. Around 105 research scholars from all around the world are participating in the event.

Xavier University, Bhubaneswar hosts Parivartan’ 21 and 6th Annual Sustainability Summit’ 21

School of Sustainability, Xavier University, Bhubaneswar, and ConXerv, the committee for Sustainability hosted its annual business conclave, Parivartan’ 21, and its 6th Annual Sustainability Summit’ 21 on 5th & 6th February 2021, respectively. School of Sustainability, Xavier University, in collaboration with Bronx’s Community College/City University, New York, has taken the Sustainability Agenda forward. The School proposed the launch of CARES (Centre for Advanced Research and excellence in Sustainability); one of the first initiatives would be setting up weather monitoring stations and related studies, facilitated by Mr. Rakesh Panda, Partha Foundation. The event also witnessed another milestone: the Wipro Sustainable Stewardship Programme, strengthening the program by supplementing academic learning via access to national and international platforms regarding training resources and involvement in impactful research and projects, extended to the Undergraduate program.

The theme for the Parivartan’ 21 was Leveraging energy transition stimulus to take a giant leap towards Decarbonisation: The next big move?. The theme explores how industries are solving the decarbonization dilemma ,and how investments and policies have created an environment where organizations have a framework to decarbonize their operations. Dr. Neal Phillip, Professor & Chairperson at Department of Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Bronx Community College, City University New York, gave the Keynote Address the theme. The event had some eminent industrial experts and academicians who discussed the topic mentioned above with their on-field experience. The speakers for the event were-

The theme for the 6th Annual Sustainability Summit’ 21 was Integrating circular economy with nature-based solutions. The speakers shed light on how industries have started integrating circular economy by taking inspiration from nature through natural ways. The discussions took place by two panels. Prof. Dr. Vikrant Vijay Patil, Faculty Coordinator, Career Advisory Services and Dr. Aditi Haldar, Director, GRI South Asia, were the respective panel moderators.

Panel 1 focused on Nature-Based Solutions and the members of the Panel were-
