AMITY UNIVERSITY GURUGRAM, 24th April, 2021: The rapid rise of India to number one position in the world with over 3.3 lacs new Covid cases per day is a clear indication of our failure to take heed from wave one of Covid-19 that was managed reasonably well with prolonged nationwide lockdown.

Strict enforcement of lockdown though resulted into untold misery to millions of migrant workers and a serious blow to nations economy, however resulted into arresting the speed of Corona Virus that was appreciated by one and all.

It was expected that the sufferings of millions of migrant workers would not be forgotten and their sacrifice, even their walking hundreds of miles bare foot would compel us the people and the government to manage the post lockdown period with great care and caution.

But then the post lockdown management had required that both the government as well as the people to take heed from the Covid-19 and exercise enough caution and observe safety measures till the nation becomes completely safe from this deadly virus. This was not done.

The way lockdown was unlocked by first opening the liquor and gutka shops and the way society also took casually the measures like social distancing and wearing of face masks invited Corona to become more furious with its new variants.

What more the sustained focus on sanitizing the public places and large scale Fumigation for wiping out corona traces was more or less abandoned. We are paying a heavy price for this lapse on part of civic authorities.
It must not be forgotten that prevention is much cheaper than the cure and it applies aptly in the case of deadly pandemic which is now known to have a cyclic behavior. Nothing prevented the government and the civic authorities to take RWAs on board in mounting a massive exercise of Sanitization and Fumigation at regular intervals as also to educate people that it makes a good sense to protect themselves rather than to risk their life.
Not too late still. While the government is doing its best to tackle the health emergency by augmenting the Healthcare Services to fight out the monumental problem arising out of the increasing number of cases, it would be highly prudent to besides enforcing night curfews and lockdowns, to carryout frequently a massive drive of Sanitization and Fumigation of all public places, residential colonies with active involvement of RWAs so that people at large become part of the movement to defeat Corona virus and succeed in wiping it out of India in the shortest possible time.

Even now if we take the heed in right earnest, we shall win and assure a healthy and bright future of our people and surely bounce back to a roaring economy by riding the Corona wave 2 successfully.

The time to act is now before it becomes too late says eminent academician Prof PB Sharma who is a former Professor of IIT Delhi, the founder Vice Chancellor of DTU and RGPV and also past President of AIU.

To find out solutions of various challenges faced by schools and teachers while giving online classes to the students and how they can develop skills of innovativeness, creativity in the students from starting. So, that they can survive and fit in the today’s job roles, Amity University Gurugram organized a panel discussion on “Education 2025: Reimagining Future Schools”.

Dr Vikas Madhukar, Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies, Amity University Gurugram in his keynote address at the webinar said that “ Blended Learning model, technology adoption and reform in assessments”. He highlighted the focus on excellence for every child and helping them, building skills and awareness that go beyond what they need simply to find work. Schools should have mechanism by that they can understand student’s mindset, their aspiration, and their dreams. He also mentioned that Amity University offers flexible curriculum in that a student of engineering can learn law, music, and photography.

Dr. Priti Ojha, Principal, Delhi International School, Dwarka while sharing her thoughts said, “Biggest challenge for teachers now is interacting with all students in online classes depriving them to provide personal attention to students. She also mentioned other important challenges faced by the schools like parents busy in their work, gadgets not available at home for online classes.

Ms. Abha Sadana, Principal, The Modern School ECNR citing the research reference stated that student of class 5th in a rural area not able to read books of class 2nd properly. One of the major reasons is effective teacher training programs. She also gave examples like creating urban forest, doodling etc to provide real life exposure and development of critical thinking.

Dr. Sheetal Maan, Modern Convent School, Dwarka In line to the topic she said that the teachers are pyramid of education system So mental wellbeing of teachers and students is very important in present situation of lockdown. She also mentioned that we need to develop empathy in students to become a good leader and human being rather than making them a robot.

Dr Priya Shrivastava, Principal, Euro International School, Sector -109, Gurugram emphasized that the key area of innovation that help the next Generation to be a future learner is to involve the young people in every stage of the project, educating young girls and youth women in the field of technology especially internet, providing training and employment to the youth of this country.

Dr. Anuradha Govind, Principal, J M International School, Dwarka, Delhi said that “Every student’s strength shall be appreciated. A lot of practical knowledge should be given to them through experiential learning projects. Parents’ involvement is very important and crucial during primary years. She also emphasized on the starting entrepreneurship curriculum at school to encourage students to become job creators than job seekers.

Mr. Sachin Juneja , Director, Market Promotions, AUG while moderating the session stating that if we think of reimagining education then it should be applicable to all, as in pandemic times we have seen nation facing hard challenges and how it disrupted the livelihood and choices of informal economy. He mentioned that to achieve ambitious target of 100% GEP for secondary education, we need to reinvent the wheel and so is this panel has done by brining innovation solutions on board. While delivering the Vote of Thanks he also asked one word from each of the panelist for today’s discussion like, Liquid Learning, Challenges and excitement, Resilience, and Innovation Education.

Amity University Gurugram organized an intellectually stimulating webinar on “The International Currency of Learning: Should a University Education Benefit the Individual or Human Society?” under the banner of “The International Expert Talk series”. The Session was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Alison Shaw, Professor of Practice for Student Success and Progression, Newcastle University, UK. Following the vision of our Hon’ble Chancellor Dr. Aseem Chauhan on augmenting internationalization, AUG has an active interface with accomplished academicians across the world regularly.

Prof. (Dr.) Alison Shaw talked about the mega trends and role of individual contribution towards them. She accentuated on the wider role of university education for the betterment of both the individual and the society. She elaborated that Universities are the community of faculty and scholars, exist for the public benefit and advancement of education, learning and research. In a world of great inequality, there is a risk that education can be a passport only to the privileged and wealthy. She emphasized that Universities should consider their strategies to result in teaching, research and impacting on the society to solve local and global issues.

Prof. Shaw had a great message for the student community. She advised that the students should consider designing their future in the interest of their own wellbeing, as well as for a greater common good to serve society. She stressed on the importance of the combination of learning, research, scholarship, international collaboration, and interdisciplinary education that the university provides. In order to do this, the student should not only achieve the deep knowledge of their disciplines but should be prepared for inter-disciplinary partnerships, inter-disciplinary friendships and find experiences that enable them to apply their knowledge in the context. Prof. Shaw highlighted the importance of collaboration across cultures, across boundaries, and across disciplines to solve global issues such as the ongoing pandemic. She also shared insights to develop leadership thinking.

Currently, as Professor of Success and Progression at the prestigious Newcastle University, UK, she is a member of the senior executive team and works with all three of the University’s Faculties to help develop the curricula, teaching and student experiences to provide the very best opportunities for students to thrive in the workplace of the future. She is the Vice-President of NFER, the leading independent UK provider of education research and insights; sits on several Boards, including the Digital Steering Group of the regional Enterprise Partnership and mentors several young academics and entrepreneurs.”

Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) PB Sharma appreciated the great work and insights shared by Prof. Shaw and expressed his happiness over the presence of the esteemed academician at the webinar.
The discussion was hosted and moderated by Vice-President- RBEF and Director- International Affairs, Prof. (Dr.) Gunjan M Sanjeev. While delivering her remarks, she emphasized on the role of collaboration and that University education must integrate interdisciplinary, inter-cultural and international learning in order to prepare students to solve global issues.

Dean-Faculty of Arts, Prof. UN Singh mentioned that in order to address mega trends, interdisciplinary education and intercultural exposure are very crucial and university education must integrate and impart the two elements along with the deep disciplinary knowledge.”

Other Senior key officials including Prof. (Dr.) Arvind Chabra, Director ASCI and Director-AIBAS, Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Nair were also present at the session. The session was appreciated and witnessed by over two hundred participants from both India as well as overseas. Office of International Affairs, Amity University Gurugram organized a virtual webinar on “Leading & Managing Through Crisis: The Case of COVID-19” under the banner of “The International Expert Talk series”. The Session was delivered by Dr. Brian McGarrie, Director- Executive MBA Programs, Birmingham University, UK. Following the vision of our Hon’ble chancellor Dr. Aseem Chauhan on augmenting internationalization, AUG has an active interface with accomplished academicians across the world regularly.

Dr. Brian mentioned different types of crisis and also about various stages of a crisis which the organizations could face in their functioning. He gave some very lucid examples to explain some of the crisis that has affected the world before COVID 19. In the Indian context, he highlighted some of the disasters such as the Indian Ocean Tsunami 2004 and also the Bhopal tragedy that occurred in 1984. He emphasized that in such a scenario, the government must address challenges on three fronts – How do we address the health crises? , How do we address the economic crisis? And, how do we keep the business of the government operating? He suggested that the government should respond fast to recover and thrive from such crisis.

He raised a very important issue as to what does good leadership looks like during a crisis. The salient features that emerged from his discussion are- acting with urgency, communicating with transparency, responding productively to missteps, and engaging in constant updating. He further brought out a very relevant point where he emphasized that it is wrong to think that the work of the leader is to set a course and stick to it. He opined that leaders must constantly update their understanding of prior probabilities deliberately using strategies to elicit new information and learn rapidly as events unfold and new information comes to light.

Dr. Brian is the Executive Director at Birmingham University, UK. He teaches Crisis Management and Organizational Reliability and Resilience. Brian has recently taught in Singapore, Malaysia, India, Jordan, and Zambia and worked with Airbus on their World Class Leaders Programme and taught a Risk and Crisis Management Executive Programme for Singapore Social Services.

Prof. (Dr.) PB Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, Amity University Gurugram in his special address highlighted resilience that India is demonstrating in the handing of Covid 19. Leaders must act with urgency and they must acknowledge the crisis. Often delay in crisis creates unmanageable situations. Leaders must also act a tremendous amount of robustness on the policies and their execution.

The discussion was hosted and moderated by Vice-President- RBEF and Director- International Affairs, Prof. (Dr.) Gunjan M Sanjeev. While delivering her speech, she talked about the necessity of new leadership models to be adopted to lead through the crisis and managing organizations.

Industry Experts addressed Orientation Program at Amity Gurugram

Keeping its tradition of blending modernity with the antiquity of India’s spiritual civilization, Amity University Gurugram began its weeklong Orientation program today with the Vedic Hawan invoking the powers of divinity and blessings of God Almighty. The first-day orientation was participated by around 1500 students and parents and was graced by the Honourable Chancellor of AUH Dr Aseem Chauhan. The experts from the industry addressed the freshers on Future of Work and Career opportunities and inspired them to be future-ready to work in the technology-intensive work environment of the digital age. The experts also shared the current technology challenges and skillsets akin to the new and emerging technologies such as IoT, Bigdata Analytics, AI and Robotics.

Addressing the inspired minds of the freshers, the Vice-Chancellor Prof PB Sharma in his opening address on “Professionals of the Digital Age- Innovate, Excel and make Mother India Proud” invited the budding professionals to empower themselves with the capabilities of the new age as also to nurture themselves as responsible citizens of the global society. Professor Sharma also shared the glimpses of major Research and Innovations happenings in AUH and invited the freshers to take the best advantage of the research-intensive academic environment that the AUH offers. Prof Sharma called upon the freshers “To pay a much greater attention to the health of the environment and tackle the formidable issues such as climate change, water and energy security and create a sense of pride in being Indians, yet never forget that we in India stand for the welfare of entire humanity, harmony, peace and happiness all around”.

The six-day orientation program is devoted to familiarizing the new students with the teaching-learning environment that the university offers, its academic rigor, research opportunities and community outreach programs specially designed to sensitize the students with the needs of the society and community around.

Addressing the freshers Honourable Chancellor of AUH Dr Aseem Chauhan said “The class of 2020-21 is very special as you are entering into your higher studies in the middle of the COVID Pandemic crisis. You have a great opportunity to build and create the world of your dreams. At Amity, your exciting journey that begins today shall inspire and empower you to perceive the world with a different perspective and shape you as outstanding professionals and make you better human beings by instilling in you the values and sanskaras that are part of the core philosophy of Amity that is being nurtured under the visionary leadership of our Founder President Dr Ashok K Chauhan. You are part of the bright future of our great nation. From today you are a part of Amity family, I want you to behave differently and act highly responsively. I congratulate you for the choice you made to join Amity University Gurugram”.

The Dy Vice Chancellor Maj Gen BS Suhag, Pro VC Dr Padmakali Banerjee also addressed the freshers. The heads of the institutions of AUH also in their pre-recorded messages welcomed the freshers on the auspicious occasion of the beginning of the academic session. A unique feature of the inaugural session was the screening of the video clippings of Amity Eminent Webinars addressed by Nobel Laureates of Peace His Holiness Dalai Lama, Nobel Laureate Shri Kailash Satyarthi and Nobel Laureate Prof Muhhamad Yunus and also Padma Vibhushan eminent Scientist Dr RA Mashelkar, former Director General CSIR and eminent Corporate Leader Padma Bhushan Dr Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairperson Biocon Ltd. The program was coordinated by Director Admissions and Dy Director Amity Business School Dr Vikas Madhukar and was assisted by Dr Monika Yadav and Dr Pooja Rana.

Expressing her great delight at the online orientation program, Neha, 1st-year student said, “Starting from the virtual tour to the talks delivered by the guests, I love every part of the orientation program. In the afternoon session the Amity Institute of Behavioral Science conducted Psychometric Profiling of the freshers and the Dean Student Welfare Maj General GS Bal introduced the freshers to the Student Clubs and Student Societies at AUH and invited the freshers to take full advantage of the cultural activities conducted throughout the year.
