Edelweiss Tokio Life unveils educational program for organ donation in 2nd edition of #NoMoreWaiting initiative

Mumbai: Continuing its social initiative #NoMoreWaiting for a second year, Edelweiss Tokio Life Insurance today unveiled a unique educational program on organ donation and a plan to build corpus for underprivileged organ recipients. The insurer will continue its partnership with MOHAN Foundation, an NGO actively working for the cause.

Once again, the insurer has roped in Rahul Bose, Actor and Social Activist, as the face of the initiative and aims to harness his social influence in spreading awareness for this cause.

Commenting on the organ donation initiative, Sumit Rai, MD & CEO, Edelweiss Tokio Life Insurance said, “We deeply resonate with the cause of organ donation because it coincides with our organisation’s vision of protecting people’s dreams and aspirations. This year, we have widened our scope by investing in educating people and aim to gradually make organ donation a subject that is extensively discussed within our social circles. We hope to make a tangible and real-world impact by extending educative as well as economic support.”

The 2nd edition of #NoMoreWaiting will extend for a year and aims to create Organ Donation Ambassadors across the country through a structured program. As a part of this program, the insurer, together with MOHAN Foundation, will offer a 4-hour online certification course, followed by a 2-hour interactive session with experts, organ donor families and recipients.

With support from Edelweiss Tokio Life and MOHAN Foundation, people who have completed this course can conduct awareness sessions, social media campaigns and encourage others to pledge for organ donation.

Another important leg of this initiative will be its fund-raising campaign. The insurer will conduct fund-raising events throughout the year by partnering with well-known Indian musicians and help build a corpus for MOHAN Foundation. This corpus will support underprivileged organ recipients by facilitating expensive transplant surgeries.

Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee, MOHAN Foundation said, “The ongoing pandemic has set back the cause of organ donation as containing Covid 19 has been a priority for all those involved in public welfare, be it hospitals or the government. This phenomenon is not limited to India but has happened across the world. So, such awareness initiatives are much more important in the current scenario to ensure that we keep moving forward in this journey irrespective of the external situation and reflect back and consolidate our achievements of the recent past to build a stronger program for the future.”

Last November, Edelweiss Tokio Life had undertaken a high-impact awareness drive to encourage Indians to take up an organ donation pledge. The insurer collected over 1 lakh pledges in a single month and created a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for most pledges received for an organ donation campaign in 24 hours.

Covid-19 Pandemic: Ways To Beat Computer Vision Syndrome As The Screen Time Goes Up

Dr Ritika Sachdev, Additional Director, Centre For Sight Group of Hospitals,By Dr Ritika Sachdev, Additional Director, Centre For Sight Group of Hospitals,

The COVID-19 crisis has led to an increase in the average screen time of people. People are busy spending a lot of time watching television, and on digital devices like computers, mobiles, and tablets more than ever! Getting hooked to electronic devices for long uninterrupted hours is causing digital eye strain, aka computer vision syndrome in people

What is computer vision syndrome?

Computer vision syndrome is a temporary eye condition that results from focusing on a digital screen for a long time without breaks. Suffering from CVS does not only affect eyesight but also hampers an individual’s productivity.

Why is computer vision syndrome concerning?

Computer vision syndrome (CVS) affects around 60 million people globally. It has become even more concerning in the times of COVID-19 for well-being for a person. A study shows that nearly half of the population in the world will be short-sighted (myopic) by 2050. One of the primary reasons associated with this eye condition would be the effects of prolonged usage of digital devices or televisions every day.

Symptoms of computer vision syndrome

  • Eye Strain
  • Blurred vision
  • Neck ache
  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Insomnia
  • Dry eyes
  • Shoulder pain

Computer vision syndrome (digital eye strain) causes

There are various causes associated with computer vision syndrome, like:

  • Less of blinking

When you are hooked to any electronic devices, you tend to blink less. Less blinking causes dry eyes. Blinking is the natural reflex of eyes to keep it moist. An average person blinks about 16-20 times in a minute. If blinking reduces to 6-8 times in a minute, then gradually, it results in dry eyes and becomes a cause for computer vision syndrome.

  • Improper workstation

If you have not set up your workstation in a proper way, then it could cause computer vision syndrome. You need to adjust the monitor, desk, chair, and lighting in the room also so that your eyes don’t feel strained.

  • Dry environment and dehydration:

AC’s in offices strip the air of its moisture, thereby making the environment dry. This dryness, an improper workstation, or bad sitting posture, makes people prone to computer vision syndrome.

  • Don’t use devices right before going to bed

It will require a bit of planning, but it is important to take a break from the screen at least two hours before you go to bed. Studies show that blue light emitting from screens can affect natural sleep and wake-up cycle.

Ways to deal with computer vision syndrome during COVID-19 pandemic

  • Blink often

Remember to blink while watching television or doing work on any digital device. Don’t let your eyes dry out. Be mindful of blinking and keeping your eyes lubricated. Encourage others around you to blink at least 18 times per minute.

  • Take frequent breaks

Have you heard of the 20-20-20 rule? While working on a computer or any digital device, take a break every 20 minutes and look at distant objects (at least 20 feet away) for 20 seconds. This habit will break the continuity of the screen.

  • Modify your workplace

You need to rework on the place where you generally sit to work or binge-watch. Keep a distance of a foot away from the monitor or the gadget when sitting straight. Adjust the brightness of the screen. Make sure to put an anti-glare screen to your device to avoid eye strain. Use proper lighting in the room. Avoid excessive or under lighting.

  • Exercise even when sitting

Whenever you get time, exercise even when sitting. Stretch your neck and shoulders frequently. During break time, move your arms and legs. Walk a bit.

Few other tips to avoid computer vision syndrome for children

  • Drink plenty of water

Children don’t pay attention to drinking water unless they’re thirsty. Drinking water keeps the body hydrated. It not only flushes out body waste but also regulates body temperature. It helps in maintaining blood pressure and boosts healthy skin. It also helps in forming saliva and mucus. Most importantly, it hydrates eyes, flushes out salt, and reduces eye strain.

  • Customized furniture for your child

From online classes to a lot of digital content consumption for entertainment, children are also spending a considerable amount of their time on-screen during the lockdown phase. Parents need to ensure to have a customized furniture setting that suits their child’s sitting posture and refrain from neck or body ache.

  • Setting screen time for kids

Parents need to ensure that even in the lockdown period, children don’t spend a lot of time on screen. Set time for their screen time activities. Instead, for entertainment, ask them to indulge in traditional indoor games like ludo, chess, etc.

  • Avoid rubbing eyes

Parents should keep a check on their children if they are rubbing their eyes too much. It could be an indicator of dry eyes or some eye infection. Insufficient blinking also leads to dry eyes. if your child does not stop rubbing frequently and complains about irritating red eyes consult the nearest eye specialist.

Eat more greens

Include green leafy vegetables in your diet to keep your body and eyes healthy. The nutrients present in green vegetables like lutein and zeaxanthin carry anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants that keep the eyes healthy. When it comes to eye care, Centre for Sight is always there at your service.

New norms: Tourism Education post Covid-19 will require new ways to prepare for the Future

Vipul Solanki, Director, LivGlobal - Institute of Travel & Tourism
Vipul Solanki, Director, LivGlobal – Institute of Travel & Tourism

By – Mr. Vipul Solanki, Director, LivGlobal – Institute of Travel & Tourism

The tourism industry is one of the most emerging sectors in India, a country with rich traditions, heritage, and a variety of tourist attractions and travel resources. Tourism education, a specialized division of education, trains, and nurtures individuals for providing world-class hospitality services. To fulfill the required skillset and employability of the gen-next youth, our present education system tries to patch up with the industry requirement in the finest ways.

Specialized education on the subject of “Tourism” spanning various aspects of the travel industry has been a sought-after course among career aspirants in India. The growing per capita income levels in the emerging economy of India is expected to be a key driver of the industry over the next decade. According to The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), tourism supported 39.8 million jobs i.e. 8% of India’s total employment, and generated around $194 billion i.e. 6.8% of India’s GDP in 2019. It’s predicted that by 2028, India will have around 52.3 million jobs in the tourism segment. In fact, India has an ambitious plan of becoming a USD 5 trillion economy by 2025, and tourism is envisaged to play a pivotal role in achieving the same. However, Covid-19 pandemic has had a rather harsh impact on the tourism segment across the world. Though the pandemic impact could last for some more time, the long-term prospects for the industry are looking bright.

While several aspects of the tourism industry will never be the same in the post-Covid-19 world, some of the emerging trends in tourism education are as below:

Access to the best in the Tourism Industry: In spite of its grappling impacts on the tourism education sector, it is quite evident that the post-Covid-19 era will witness the rise of more evolved Hybrid learning. This new way of learning that combines virtual educational materials and opportunities for online communication with old-style place-based classroom methods has opened up many avenues for the betterment of tourism education. While we have visiting faculties in physical classrooms, now the arena for the same has expanded to a multifarious level. The world has shrunk and the best in business globally present anywhere in the world can coach students as guest and regular faculties. Thus, in addition to learning only about local skill sets, students will also have an opportunity to get exposed to knowing and adapting the global skill sets.

Skills to understand and access technology: Thriving in a digital world has already led to the advent of numerous modus operandi especially in terms of innovation. Augmented reality, virtual reality, bots and automation has entered every avenue or domain including the travel and tourism industry. The emergence of these technologies has been on the rise which makes it essential to learn about these applications and its usage. With regards to the dynamics and demand as per employability in the industry, the tourism education sector will have to transition to the new way of learning. Adapting to a digital curriculum wherein technological innovation is at the forefront will help provide the students with an opportunity to attend interactive hybrid sessions hosted by both faculties and leaders from the industry’s key sectors. The live virtual panel discussions, webinars, and Q&A sessions enable students to gain numerous insights to better prepare themselves for their future careers in the post-Covid-19 world.

Digital marketing leading the way forward: There is not even a single part of the travel and tourism industry that has not profited from the extensive use of the internet and digitalization. The farsighted marketers operating within the sector are making use of radical technologies to help convert desire into action. Digital platforms have altered the way marketers in the past would operate and has bestowed them the ability to put their communications right at the fingertips of probable customers. Another aspect transforming the sector is an active social media presence which helps to increase the number of people engaging with your brand. Moreover, digital marketing is also particularly convenient in times of crisis as it can be used to aid in shifting public opinion by generating and focusing on an alternate narrative.

Boosting the ‘Think Tank’ quality in aspirants: Learning has to be a two-way approach. The one-sided approach has never worked and never will. During the on-going course, the sessions or workshops must never limit themselves only to industry experts imparting the theories, experiences, and other course materials. The students can learn and derive from the learning only if they are put into a situation where they come up with their own ideas and concepts. The industry’s up-gradation depends on the new injections, which is only possible if enough room or support is provided to enable the students to become think-tanks. The aspect of uniqueness and new conceptions will contribute to dynamic avenues for the industry thus generating employment.

Curriculum inclusions: To bounce back in the post-pandemic phase, the travel education sector requires a top-down overhaul of the course curriculum. The industry needs to make all efforts to equip students with emerging tourism skills through a revised training methodology. Combined scholarships, hands-on knowledge about the trends that have shaped the industry amidst the crises, and certification courses on COVID 19 will reskill students for the new normal.

Tourism Education – The Way Forward: The country’s education sector is expected to be a fast-growing one. Due to the rapid urbanization, India’s educational demographics pertaining to the number of out-of-school children falling under the age bracket of 16 years and above has been gradually surging.  Further, the growing income levels leading to increased discretionary consumption are expected to augur well for the tourism sector and job opportunities therein. As a result, the educational courses related to tourism are expected to be in demand among aspiring students in the country. These courses include undergraduate and postgraduate level ones including Bachelor’s Degree in Travel & Tourism, Post-Graduate Diploma in Tourism and Travel Management, Master’s Degree in Tourism & Travel Management, etc. which are highly sought after.

Quick Heal helps in the recovery of stolen desktops and other items in Gujarat

Gujarat: We have heard a lot about how cybersecurity solutions protect end-users from threat actors stealing their sensitive data. But, have you ever imagined how this can also save users from robbery? As astonishing as it may sound, the news is 100% authentic, and the protagonist in this story is Quick Heal!

Two desktops along with a few other items were robbed from Hari Preet Fashion, a garment store in Surat, in September 2020. A group of thieves barged into the shop and stole a couple of items, including two desktops, an embroidery machine, garments, a CCTV unit, and an LED. However, little did they know that the Quick Heal anti-virus solution installed on the desktops would turn out to be a trap that would help in tracing them.

Post the robbery, the end-user filed an FIR, followed by the local police initiating their investigation process. After about a month, the victim purchased a new desktop and requested Universal Computer, who is also a Quick Heal dealer to install the Quick Heal solution with the previous license key, which went away with the stolen desktop. On the next day itself, the new desktop that now had the old QH license key started receiving multiple installation errors. The dealer was aware that this problem occurs only when the same QH license is simultaneously being used on another machine.

The dealer immediately contacted Quick Heal support team and shared the FIR copy with them. The team registered a query on TrackMyLaptop, a free Quick Heal laptop tracking facility to retrieve stolen laptops. Post registration, Quick Heal support team assisted the police and guided them to use this service, as per the given instructions. After the tracking process, the team shared details such as Mac ID, IP, city and location of the stolen desktops with the police officials. The digital evidence helped in their investigation and eventually trace and recover most of the stolen items fromthe culprits. Later, the data on the system was accessed and found intact.

Amit Kathrotiya of Hari Preet Fashion said, “I am truly grateful to Quick Heal and Police authorities for retrieving the stolen items in such a short time frame. I never thought of recovering these items, but Quick Heal has restored faith in us and proved that safety could be ensured in today’s digital-first era too. I would highly recommend Quick Heal to everyone who owns a computer, be it a desktop, laptop or mobile. Thanks, Quick Heal!”

Healthium Medtech announces the launch India’s 1st knotless tissue closure device with a triangular end stopper:- “TRUBARB™”

Bangalore: Healthium Medtech, one of the largest medical devices companies in India, today announced the launch of its latest innovation Trubarb™ – a knotless tissue closure device designed to redefine the suturing experience for surgeons. The device comes with barbs and an effective triangular end stopper that eliminates the need for knotting when compared to a regular suture and eliminates the difficulties of looping when compared to other knotless sutures. It has been designed to shorten suturing time, decrease morbidity and ischemic necrosis that arise due to knotting and simplify the overall suturing experience for surgeons.

Sutures are amongst the most used products during surgeries, however, the only significant advances on sutures have been sterilization in 1870ies and synthetic absorbable sutures in 1960ies. By eliminating the need for knotting which is considered a necessary evil in suturing as it reduces the tensile strength of the suture by thinning it, creating a weak spot and building uneven tension across the wound, and by eliminating the unmet needs of wound dehiscence, knot slippage, ischemic necrosis due to knotting and increase in blood loss and morbidity especially in Laparascopic surgeries, Trubarb is looking to redefine the wound closure experience for surgeons.

Speaking on the launch, Anish Bafna, CEO, Healthium Group, said, “As a large Indian player in a market dominated by MNCs, we are trying to innovate constantly to not only drive efficiencies, safety and simplicity for surgeons but also enhance patient safety and outcome. We hold 55 patents in India and the U.S and Trushield™, India’s 1st anti-microbial gloves, Surestitch™, the 1st meniscal repair device designed and manufactured in India, and now Trubarb™ with a Triangular end stopper for the 1st time vs a conventional loop , are all products we have launched this year to serve our customers and provide them with yet another reason to choose an Indian brand! In addition, our products are made to global standards with US FDA and C.E approvals, can be accessed in all 500 districts in India with medical facilities and are accepted in 70 countries. It gives us immense pleasure to launch Trubarb™ so that surgeons can have a secure, swift and simplified suturing experience. “

Dr. Ashok Moharana, Chief Medical Officer, Healthium Medtech said “Healthium is pleased to launch Trubarb™ with the triangular end stopper for the 1st time In India. The triangular end stopper in the Trubarb unidirectional knotless tissue closure device, avoids the looping requirement as compared to other unidirectional barbed sutures with a loop, thus reducing the operation time for surgeons and easing the whole experience. The stopper also enables the device to stand perpendicular to the tissue during the surgery thus preventing the suture spillage and providing the added security. Single angle cut unidirectional helical barbs aid firm fixation and ensure uniform tension over the wound reducing tissue ischemia and necrosis as compared to regular sutures. The needle is made from 300 series steel for easy penetration and is coated with silicone and has a longer taper ratio that offers extra speed during surgery. We hope that Trubarb™ provides an elevated suturing experience for both segments of surgeons, those using ordinary sutures as well as those who use knotless sutures.”

The device has multiple applications and can be used for procedures such as gynaecological, general surgery procedures, urology, oncology and plastic & cosmetic surgeries.
