The online magazine, among the first for a communications platform, will help developers better understand the industry through long-form analyses, opinion pieces, industry leader interviews, and discussions on the latest tech trends.

Infobip will launch the first edition on the eve of its developer conference Shift Miami on 23 May. It will feature an interview with Kelsey Hightower, one of the key people behind the Kubernetes project, and one of the most influential voices in the tech industry over the last 20 years.

Other features include whether the cloud is the right solution for every company and an analysis of technical debt as a tech and business problem. Alongside this, the magazine will interview Shift Miami speakers, offering a sneak peek into their on-stage talks. Other articles will cover managing privacy concerns with tech, whether APIs are “eating the world” and testing in production.

Editorially independent and technologically agnostic, ShiftMag will cover issues relevant to software engineers at all levels, from aspiring developers to senior leaders. Regular topics will include how to manage deadlines as an engineer; to rewrite or not rewrite legacy code; whether DevOps is dead; and what is Cloud FinOps.

ShiftMag is part of a global developer community initiative at Infobip, alongside its Shift developer conferences in Europe and the US, which attract thousands of developers and companies such as Github, Amazon, and Shopify.

Ivan Burazin, Chief Developer Experience Officer at Infobip, said: “The launch of ShiftMag is a significant step forward in Infobip’s strategy to put developers front and center, having acquired Shift Conference and tech business magazine Netokracija. There are around 20 million developers worldwide, but they often do not consume content through standard communication channels. That is why we have launched ShiftMag to continue to support and build relationships with the developer community. The launch of ShiftMag further cements our developer-led approach, providing an unrivaled experience by creating best-in-class events and content alongside easy-to-use software development kits and understandable API documentation.”

Deep expertise and global reach

Mia Biberović, editor-in-chief of Netokracija, the business technology magazine acquired by Infobip last year, becomes ShiftMag’s editor-in-chief. Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar to inaugurate the organized National Conclave on ensuring market access for small farmers

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar to inaugurate the organized National Conclave on ensuring market access for small farmers

New Delhi: 22 May 2023: Grameen Foundation India, in collaboration with Walmart Foundation, is organizing a national conference on market access for small farmers on May 23, 2023, at Hyatt Regency in Bhikaji Cama Place, New Delhi, from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The objective of the conclave is to address the challenges faced by small farmers in the agricultural sector of India. The inauguration of this conference will be done by the Chief Guest, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Cabinet Minister of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, Government of India. Additionally, Professor Ramesh Chand, Member of NITI Aayog, and Shri Manoj Ahuja (IAS), Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, Government of India, will also enlighten the farmers through this conference.

It should be noted that the Indian economy is heavily reliant on agriculture, which provides livelihood to nearly half of the population. However, small and marginal farmers face several challenges in the agricultural landscape, including limited bargaining power, inadequate access to input services, outdated farming practices, insufficient technology, post-harvest management facilities, and limited extension services. These challenges, coupled with the impacts of climate change, hinder farmers’ income and resilience. To address these issues and enhance farmers’ livelihoods, the Government of India has established Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and encouraged their strength. However, several FPOs are struggling, particularly in establishing profitable market linkages amidst new value chains.

Grameen Foundation India, in collaboration with prestigious partners such as Walmart Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Swiss Development Corporation, GIZ, and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, is working to empower FPOs and small farmers, with a special focus on women. This initiative has spread to 82 FPOs in 23 districts of Uttar Pradesh, benefiting 58,000 small and marginal farmers directly.

These efforts have yielded significant achievements in livelihoods based on agriculture. FPOs have experienced a remarkable growth of 230% in turnover, primarily driven by better linkages with input and output markets. Farmers have witnessed a 200% increase in the use of input services and a substantial 367% increase in output services. Notably, 82% of the farmers have demonstrated enhanced negotiation skills, showcasing increased trust in FPOs. There has also been progress in digitizing data collection, with 90% of FPOs gathering farmer data. Furthermore, the participation of women in FPOs has increased, leading to more gender equality in decision-making and a shift toward community-oriented perspectives.

This national conference will bring together key stakeholders from the government, private sector, agriculture business, financial institutions, non-profit organizations, and donors to engage in practical discussions on markets, technology, finance, and extension services.

This conclave, taking place in Delhi, aligns with the sustainable development goals of the United Nations, encompassing no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, gender equality, decent work, and economic growth. Its objective is to promote partnerships among committed stakeholders to bring meaningful changes in the lives of small farmers, especially women.

Climate Asia Annual Conference: Building a Sustainable Legacy for a Greener Tomorrow held in New Delhi, India

Climate Asia Logo

Delhi, 22/5/23: On May 4, 2023,the annual Climate Asia conference, ‘Building a Sustainable Legacy for a Greener Tomorrow, was held in New Delhi, India. The conference aimed to bring together a diverse set of stakeholders – funders, NGOs, climate and research organizations, experts and individuals working in the climate space, and members of the media- to discuss the challenges posed by climate change, explore opportunities for action, and identify innovative solutions.

The conference included four-panel discussions focusing on empowering the workforce, enhancing resilience and mitigation through gender-sensitive approaches, scaling impact and driving change in climate philanthropy, and navigating challenges and opportunities in health, mental health, and climate.

The speakers included: Dr. Parveen Dhamija (Skill Council for Green Jobs), Dr. DebajitPalit (NSB-NTPC School of Business), Dr. Sabina Dewan (JustJobs Network), Nidhisha Philip (Acumen), Rahul Balakrishnan (Arthan), Dr. Indu K Murthy (Center for Study of Science, Technology, and Policy), Dr. Sona Mitra (IWWAGE), Mansiben Shah [Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA)], Aarti Khosla (Climate Trends), Aiswarya Ananthapadmanabhan (Arthan), Raj Mariwala (Mariwala Health Initiative), Dr. Arun Sharma (University College of Medical Sciences), Abha Dandekar (Elephant in the Room Consulting, Raintree Family Office and Raintree Foundation), Shahaab Javeri (SELCO Foundation), Koushik Yanamandram (Climate Asia), Aparna Khandelwal (India Climate Collaborative), Siddharth Chaturvedi (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), Moutushi Sengupta (AVPN) and Satyam Vyas (Climate Asia).

The conference commenced with a captivating keynote address by CEO of Growald Climate Fund Joanna Messing, which shed light on the opportunities and pathways for climate action.

“While climate change can sometimes seem overwhelming and scary and overwhelmingly negative, there is actually another narrative present which is the narrative of hope. While it’s true that climate change is creating damage and harming communities and nature. The pathway to solving climate change can also offer a positive and hopeful vision. For example, clean energy offers the positive co-benefits of clean air and clean water and makes economic sense. The transformation to a clean energy economy offers economic opportunities with new businesses, new job development, new technologies, and new development models.”

She also highlighted, “We also need to think of how we spend our time and careers in a global crisis. In every disruption, there come great opportunities for those new solutions and new technologies. That means a whole new sector of opportunities. There is a way to think of every job as a climate job whether it’s in a corporation, whether it’s in the government, thinking about how every company will need to build climate risk, resilience & opportunity into their climate models.”

The lack of skilled human capital in the green sector is a major challenge, and addressing this requires improving courses and curriculum and promoting cross-learning between theory and industry practices. The panel on ‘Paving the Way for Green Careers: Building a Sustainable Future’ underscored the importance of creating and promoting green jobs to solve climate change. It further sheds light on social entrepreneurship and investment playing a critical role in addressing climate change and supporting workers who are impacted by it.

The panel on ‘Enhancing Resilience and Mitigation through Gender-sensitive Approaches’threw light on the evolution of integrating gender priority into climate action projects. Some pertinent takeaways from the discussion included the need for relevant data and research models that consider differential impacts and responses while breaking the norm of structured research to find innovative solutions. The importance of organizing women, enabling economic ownership, and adopting a human-centered approach was highlighted in the context of green jobs and upskilling for women. Furthermore, the intersection of gender, climate change, and cultural norms, including loss of livelihoods, mobility restrictions, and caregiving responsibilities, were recognized as barriers that must be addressed.

The second keynote address by Harish Hande, CEO of SELCO Foundation, provided the perspective on the health-energy-nexus “Health is a fundamental right, it’s not a luxury.”Health- Energy-Climate is a huge potential for adaptation and future mitigation. Health is going to push companies to come up with different innovations. Hopefully that what we learn from the health sector can actually go into livelihoods, and the way public assets are done in these centers, we can actually learn how other public assets can be maintained in other sectors. Health is critical in terms of innovation, in terms of delivery, in terms of accessibility”. “Once you are able to solve such things for resource-poor areas in an inclusive and climate-resilient manner, we then look at other aspirational services for the poor to move on from one part of the financial segment to the next. Health-energy nexus is extremely critical for the world and the stakeholders.”

Panel on ‘The Intersection of Public Health, Mental Health, and Climate: Challenges and Opportunities for Vulnerable Communities’ emphasized the need to incorporate a mental health lens when planning disaster mitigation strategies. The panel also addressed the lack of oversight on mental health and its impact on various vulnerable communities. The discussion further broadened the horizon around the impact of climate change and mental health on indigenous tribal adivasi communities, oppressed castes, oppressed races, queer, trans or LGBTQIA communities, and persons living with a disability.

The final keynote address by Sameer Shisodia, CEO of Rainmatter Foundation, addressed the audience on the theme of climate change and philanthropy “What is climate but the outcome of series of bad trade-offs we made for hundred of years, in our road building, in our construction, in our food system, in our choice of fabrics, in our design of industry, the economy itself and if we have to fix this, we have to be able to reverse in everything we do again. It’s an everything, everyone, all at once problem. This necessarily needs every citizen, every actor to understand this, to understand how climate problems intersect with their lives, the choices and opportunities they have to actually influence this, to get better outcomes for generations to come.”

On funding, he highlighted that “The need for flexible funding is important because a lot of climate problems are gigantic, and if you want to leave them truly solved, funding needs to support a lot of ecosystem places that are available as a response to people as they start to understand their needs. When I am referring to funding, this refers to philanthropic and CSR funding, but it also refers to government plans, programs, and schemes”.

Panel on ‘Navigating Climate Philanthropy: Scaling Impact and Driving Change’opened with various climate philanthropy initiatives and the experience of working with various stakeholders, including government agencies. On the discussion of challenges arising for not-for-profits when seeking support from funders, Aparna Khandelwal, Sr. Advisor, Climate and Finance, India Climate Collaborative, highlighted,”One of the focus areas must be communication since there’s often a gap of understanding between donors and nonprofits. Through better communication, donors and nonprofits will understand that no one organization can solve every climate challenge, and therefore to get better outcomes – collaboration is key”. Building on this, the discussion also highlighted another reason for such a gap which is due to a difference in the proposal offered and the aim of funds. The session also touched upon the systems approach in climate change, and Siddharth Chaturvedi, Senior Program Officer, Agricultural Development, Asia, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, remarked on the systems approach in terms of climate expertise “One thing to work with the government is that we need to be mindful of showing solutions” “Collaborative nature is very important. To work with the government, while the forum is discussing the role of philanthropy and CSRs, on top of these actors, there is a layer of bilateral, multilateral and then you have government – and agriculture is a state subject. Hence, the foundation takes a two-pronged approach, we work both with the state and central government- with the central government, the focus is more on the national frameworks, research, and development, while with the state government, it is more towards supporting implementation, developing inclusive markets, etc.”
On climate adaptation, “The foundation supports the government implementation of certain programs through Technical Support Units that assist government machinery in delivering what needs to be delivered. A good example is JSPVAT with JEEViKA program in Bihar, a special purpose vehicle which is not supporting the implementation of the mandate but also pushing the mandate, crowding in best practices and technologies”.

In conclusion, as the impacts of changing climate continue to escalate, it has become clear that immediate and coordinated action is imperative to safeguard our planet for future generations. While the challenge of addressing climate change may seem daunting, it is important to recognize that only by taking action now, can we help mitigate the worst impacts of climate change and create a more sustainable and resilient future for ourselves and future generations.

Climate Asia (www.climateasia.org) is on a mission to foster human capital and inspire future leaders in climate action, focusing on building the institutional capacity of NGOs. Recognizing the urgent need to create a sustainable future for work amidst the global climate crisis, Climate Asia aims to bridge human capital gaps in the climate space while prioritizing inclusivity and equity. This includes empowering underrepresented communities and building the institutional capacity of NGOs to address climate challenges at the grassroots level effectively. Through partnerships with educational institutions, mentorship programs, and outreach efforts, Climate Asia is committed to nurturing a diverse and skilled workforce that can drive meaningful change in addressing the impacts of climate change, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of a more resilient and sustainable future for all.
