World University of Design powers the drive towards a Sustainable Future

Sonepat: World University of Design conducted a Design Thinking and Service Design Workshop – sort of a mini Global Goals Jam – today on World Industrial Design Day. The workshop was attended by educators from different schools and colleges in and around Sonepat, Haryana who were trained in the nuances of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by UNDP and how they are applied towards development and sustainability.

In this one day virtual workshop spearheaded by Dr. Sanmitra Chitte – Dean of School of Management – principals and teachers of the participating schools were trained in the methodology of Design Thinking that leads towards Design Strategy. It emphasized on how Design Thinking could help them achieve one of the specific SDGs set aside by UNDP, focusing on the dire need to “Reduce the load of solid waste in and around the area we live in”. The participants were awarded certificates for their zeal and passion towards the idea of a sustainable future.

From a list of 17 goals (that must be fulfilled by 2030) advised for a better world, the University has chosen to participate in goals 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and 12 (responsible consumption and production) that are interdependent. As the chief mentor of the university, Dean, Dr. Sanmitra Chitte says, “The workshop is in line with curriculum that is taught at WUD’s School of Management, where we ensure that students are enabled to understand management from a different perspective and that they are all the time involved in innovative thinking ability. The students from school of Management are capable of generating strategies with the help of design thinking and are able to work on service design and also systems with Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, data indexing etc”

Design Thinking is the backbone of this workshop addressing the Sustainable Development Goal of Regenerative Cities; it is an indispensible subject that will be addressed under the NEP for curriculum at senior secondary school level. By holding this workshop attempt has been made to train and equip teachers who can in turn share inputs on problem solving with school students. The sole intent of the workshop was to enlighten them about the very concept of the term Design and its use across industries as a problem solving component; its reverence as the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Vice Chancellor, World University of Design says, “We are standing at the cusp of a large change, a major disruption. It is our duty to train our next generation in thinking innovatively to manage technology while making the planet more sustainable.”

Aparajitha’s ‘60 Minutes Compliance’ Webinar Decodes Labour Compliance Vis-A-Vis Salary

Chennai: Aparajitha Corporate Services Private Limited, the country’s no.1 company for Compliance, today organized a ’60 Minutes Compliance’ webinar to discuss Labour Compliance vis-a-vis Salary.

The webinar focussed on explaining how the term ’Salary’ varies under different labour legislations and how salary consists of ‘inclusive’ and ‘exclusive’ portions and how there is no ratio prescribed between the two. The discussion was completely based on the recently proposed Labour Codes Point of View and how under the codes, the definition is going to be common, with a 50 % ceiling fixed for ‘exclusive portion’ of the monthly wages which otherwise can be stated as at least 50% of the monthly compensation shall be necessarily considered as wages for any purpose, subject, of course, to the restriction, if any, notified.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Nagaraj Krishnan, Managing Director, Aparajitha Corporate Services Private Limited said, “The earlier legislation allowed a lot of loopholes through which salary structures could be tweaked by organizations which might have been discriminatory to the workforce of an organization at certain instances especially in Gratuity, Bonus and Provident Fund. The salary structures which have the wage portion working out to less than 50% might be revisited under the newly proposed codes. This significant change could have an impact on other areas like PF, ESI, Bonus, Gratuity, etc. The webinar intended to take deep-dive into it and explain to people what the term ‘salary’ means, what aspects put together it, and certain nuances of the term that are often missed by many.”

The webinar, which saw participation by individuals comprising of HR professionals and mid & senior level personnel across various industry sectors, was moderated and addressed by Mr. K. Varadan, Chief Consultation Officer, Aparajitha Corporate Services Private Limited.

Study Group identifies 92% of prospective international students prefer to quarantine rather than defer their academic programme

London/India: The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns across the globe have brought large-scale transformations to the education landscape. Leading international education provider Study Group has highlighted these shifting trends in the global higher education market in its latest research. The white paper reveals that students’ desire to study overseas on-campus remains strong, with 92% of prospective international students willing to quarantine rather than deferring their academic programme. Study Group has also announced the launch of new initiatives in response to the evolving needs of its partner universities and students.

According to the research, traditional destinations like the UK and the US will continue to be the most preferred choice for international students on the back of political changes. Interestingly, students from China and South Korea are more likely to study for an international qualification at a campus in their own country in the current climate in the short-term.

When it comes to the mode of learning, students are gravitating towards flexible learning models, which bring the benefits of both virtual and face-to-face learning. In fact, 67% of students are likely to consider blended and digital modes of delivery, whereas 70% expect delivery to be at least half online in the future.

In line with such changing demands, Study Group has launched a Remote Learning Centre in Shanghai, China to allow students to study their programme online in an on-campus learning environment. Additionally, it has introduced new online programmes to support learners as they prepare to study overseas. Developed with an education-first digital pedagogy approach, these courses are designed to sustain attainment, progression and student satisfaction virtually.

Commenting on the findings of the research, Manoj Shetty, Chief Revenue Officer at Study Group, said, “The whole education sector responded rapidly to the pandemic, moving to remote learning everywhere from K-12 to workforce training. This has accelerated the move to a more digital education landscape and prompted a greater acceptance of this change.

We have introduced new online programmes to support our learners, including: Prepare for Success and specialist courses in Academic English Skills. These courses were created with an education-first digital pedagogy approach and are designed to sustain attainment, progression and student satisfaction virtually.”

The research report further reveals that the pandemic has necessitated the need for education providers who can support the lifelong learning of students. Moreover, there is now increased demand for international courses offering greater employability opportunities.

The concept of ‘work from home’ backed by the comfort of a ‘discrete delivery’ option, has drawn more interest from consumers towards this segment on Myntra, across big cities and small towns, alike, with tier 2 and 3 markets contributing about 40% to the growth of the segment and having a significantly higher growth rate. Myntra has added over 50 new brands in the segment post the first wave of the pandemic with another 15 brands in the offing, giving millions of customers, access to a wide range of selection from leading international and domestic brands.

The category has continued to witness strong growth during the months of April and May this year, despite the severe second wave of the pandemic. The category, regarded as an essential, grew at 200% YoY during this period, reiterating the trends observed during the first phase of the national lockdown in 2020.

Myntra currently houses over 30,000 styles, from about 200 leading brands in the Lingerie and Loungewear category, with leading brands being Enamor, Amante, La Senza, Triumph, Dressberry and Marks & Spencer, among others. Key products in the category include, bras (wireless and bralettes), briefs, lounge sets and lounge dress.

To enhance the shopping experience and to educate customers about their intimate wear needs, Myntra is creating strong and relevant content at multiple ‘In-App’ touch points such as product display page and dedicated innerwear stores. These product-related stories and content initiatives make shopping lingerie an educational and pleasant experience for shoppers and help them cater to their needs.

Data on buying behavior indicates that young shoppers are trendy and experimentative, trying out various designs and silhouettes, as opposed to elder women shoppers who make their choices from a need-based perspective. Currently, lacy lingerie, the babydoll segments and lounge sets are in trend and on demand. Trends in loungewear show that consumers are opting for high-on-comfort wear that can replace the usual ethnic and western wear. ‘Sexy lingerie’, is one of the most searched product attributes on Myntra in the segment.

About 60% of the demand in the segment is presently generated by metro and tier 1 markets, although tier 2 and 3 markets have a significantly higher growth rate. The rising demand for the segment has also prompted brands to innovate and introduce new styles in products, such as, 4-way stretch bra and cooling bra, alongside shapewear, which is witnessing a rising demand for shaping briefs and bodysuits that cater to various body types. Among male consumers, breathable cotton track pants witnessed heightened demand, followed by shorts and innerwear.

Speaking on the strong demand for the segment, Ayyappan Rajagopal, Chief Business Officer Myntra, said, “Lingerie and loungewear is an emerging category with a strong contribution to Myntra’s growth. Our wide range of brands, options and styles, have driven solid momentum during the pandemic, alongside factors such as work from home and an attitudinal change in young women, especially from regions other than metros and tier-1 cities. While loungewear continues to witness growth like the previous year, a pleasant surprise has been the bouncing back of swimwear and shapewear. We are aiming to have more than 250 brands in the lingerie and loungewear segment by the end of the year, with a good mix of domestic and international brands.”

Lingerie articles trend at a price range of INR 500-700 and Loungewear at a price range of INR 900 -1100 on Myntra on an average.

FAITH Associations thank FM for acknowledging pandemic stress and urge 5 step comprehensive support

FAITH Associations recommend changes w.r.t ECLGS 3.0 to enhance its effectiveness and practicality

New Delhi: FAITH the policy federation of all the national associations representing the complete tourism, travel and hospitality industry of India (ADTOI, ATOAI, FHRAI, HAI, IATO, ICPB, IHHA, ITTA, TAAI, TAFI) have thanked the FM for recognising the deep pain and stress of Indian tourism, travel & hospitality industry after almost 5 quarters and for including it structured relief measures announcements yesterday.

Extension of E visa waiver: The fee waiver on 5 lakhs tourist e-visas is a demand stimulus. Since the inbound tourism industry must fully recover from the scratch, from the time that it restarts, they have requested that this fee waiver be extended till at least the pre-pandemic figures of tourist arrivals is reached or till 2024 without any end use restrictions on the travelers. They have said that the fees foregone will be a notional loss of perhaps an additional ₹ 100 crores is a minor investment in restarting the inbound tourism which contributed to more than ₹ 2 lakh crores in the pre pandemic year. This will send a strong message of confidence building to the world which is waiting to travel again.

Reclassification of the financial support : The creation of financial support to be administered through MoT is a welcome step. Over 15 months there have been almost NIL cash flows and there is non propensity to pay interest. Since the financial support is already guaranteed by NCGLT, it is requested that it be converted to a grant or if not, then it be made interest free.

Each quantum of support helps. However, since this industry has been without cash flows and having to pay statutory liabilities and operating expenses, they have also suggested doubling the amount of financial support. Alternatively, this relief payout, may be repeated in the next quarter as the travel industry will be constrained for this foreseeable period due to pandemic in some source markets

Removal of TCS on outbound travel : TCS which was introduced in October FY 20 has made Indian tours and travel intermediaries uncompetitive. In addition to the GST, now they are liable to deduct tax at source. This makes booking from Indian travel intermediaries uncompetitive as against those based outside of India who do not have any such levies on either Indian or on international travelers. This will cause the travel transactional business to shift to outside of Indian jurisdictions. As and when travel will restart, this will become like an artificial barrier on our travel intermediaries as they look to recover from the pandemic. The added disadvantage is that if our travel intermediaries are impacted on their outbound business the inbound business to India will also get severely impacted.

SEIS Credit of SEIS dues for 2019-20: SEIS scrips dues against tourism foreign exchange earned for 2019-20 is still outstanding which is creating significant distress as that money was spent in creating tourism demand for india.

It is requested that these SEIS dues be credited immediately to enable such tourism, travel & hospitality companies to meet their expenses and to take care of their employees.

Waiver of Statutory Dues: Despite no revenues, there are statutory liabilities & compliance liabilities at both state and central Government level & other regulatory bodies which still need to be met. These include various forms of duties, taxes, cess or license fees including electricity & water, property taxes, excise duties, state professional taxes, transport taxes, parking cess, insurance premiums, provident fund, ESI contribution and any penalties thereof on hotels, travel agents, tour operators, restaurants tourist transporters or any other form of tourism travel & hospitality service. It is requested that all states governments and the respective Central Government ministries to waive off these fixed levies & compliances till the period of the pandemic. Alternatively, a corpus with the Ministry of Tourism be set up to meet these monthly liabilities of tourism travel & hospitality companies to discharge them on their behalf.
