Fish farms in Bihar are laden with antibiotics, insecticides and heavy metals, finds FIAPO latest investigation report

A new investigation by the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) and All Creatures Great and Small (ACGS) brings to light a shockingly awful state of aquaculture in India. It was found that 100% of the fish and shrimp farms have hazardous levels of lead and cadmium. With careless use of antibiotics and insecticides, uncontrollable disease outbreaks, no attention to fish welfare, and a looming threat of AMR, aquaculture is a ticking time bomb.

Varda Mehrotra, Executive Director of FIAPO says, “We have found shocking conditions in this growing sector. Fish are kept in cramped, filthy enclosures, with no waste management. They are cut up alive. The contaminated water from these fish farms is released into local water bodies and estuaries that spread the parasites further, causing harm to the fish population as well as humans.”

FIAPO and ACGS investigated about250 fish and shrimp farms across the 10 highest producing states in India. This covers fresh and brackish water farms in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Gujarat, West Bengal, Orissa, and freshwater farms in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, and Assam. The objective of the study was to assess the condition of fish and shrimp farms in India on animal welfare, public health, and environmental hazard standards.

In Bihar, the investigation was carried out in the districts of East Champaran, Muzaffarpur, Begusarai, and Patna covering 20 fish farms. 100% of the fish farms had toxic levels of lead and cadmium, scoring extremely poorly on the public health hazard scale (0.25/1).

Additionally, 100% of the fish farms had no outlets, this means dirty water is recirculated posing a grave threat to fish and human health. Several farmers admitted massive losses due to prevalent diseases and massive floods every year. All the fish farms lacked basic maintenance and were littered, and open defecation is a regular practice near the fish farms. All the fish farms had poor dissolved oxygen levels, which means fish were struggling to survive with high mortality rates.

Following the Kolkata model, Patna recently added a sewage-fed fishery. Banned fish species like Mangur catfish were widely farmed accompanied by the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, insecticides, and pesticides.

Such haphazard management practices also invite the risk of anti-microbial resistance. AMR is the next health catastrophe waiting to be unleashed. Recently, a group of fisheries scientists called for greater awareness about Anti-microbial resistance (AMR) addressing the need to curb the transmission of AMR bacteria to humans from fish and shrimps.

The unhygienic conditions of meat markets also give rise to events of pandemics, malaria, typhoid, and jaundice. Anjali Gopalan, Managing Trustee, All Creatures Great, and Small says”We do not seem to align our considerations with our lifestyles and actions, the brunt of which is faced by aquatic life because they exist away from human civilization. The lack of marine sentience and sensitivity of the public as well as industries to the health of fish is revealed when we learn about the administrative and political indolence in the country. Consequently, when this is clearly a public health concern we must start today in mobilizing resources to improve the conditions to avoid an aquaculture disaster.”

“Aquaculture is factory farming of fishes, and it constitutes the same systemic problems encountered in the factory farms of land animals: crowding, stress, disease, pain, and death. If you don’t want to support that, then don’t buy fish,” says Dr. Jonathan Balcombe, scientist, speaker & advisor at FIAPO.

K-9, the unsung heroes

Forfurs is a premium pet accessory brand that has its origins deep-seated in India. As a homegrown brand, all Forfurs products are handcrafted by local artisans, based in Kanpur. The brand celebrated India’s 72nd Republic Day by bringing to light the stories of our unsung and valiant pups who serve our country fiercely.

It is a small step to ensure that we take a moment to pause and thank our K-9 soldiers for their loyal services and for doing their bit to ensure that we, as Indian citizens can sleep at night peacefully, and completely at ease.

In its latest social media campaign, the Brand salutes the courage these dogs show by recovering ammunitions, or locating explosives among many other challenging tasks. The stories of such furry soldiers will be shared on social media mentioning their sizable contribution to the country along with their images.

K-9 , the unsung heroes

Some of these K9 recruits have been responsible for some dangerous tasks like sniffing out ammunitions and explosives, clearing out helipads for dignitaries and also guarding the royal families. Alex, a majestic golden Labrador, was put on duty to guard the Bhutanese King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck after an attempt was made to take his life. He is from RVC, Meerut. Alex managed to pick up the assassin’s scent and ran miles through the forest to catch him. The assassin was caught and the king rewarded Alex with ₹1,000, his own gold ring and a certificate of honour. There are many such stories that we never get to hear. However, they do exist abundantly.

“Dogs are the most loyal and selfless creatures, I believe. When I heard some of these stories, they inspired me greatly. There are novels, songs and poems that are written for the gallantry of our soldiers and yet the contribution of a K-9 goes unheard. I wanted to talk about such stories and to start a conversation centred around the fact that dogs are not just strays or pet, some are soldiers too,” says Vanya Chandel, Founder of Forfurs.

Discovery of New Drug Candidates for Parkinson’s Disease Offer Promise to Impede Progression of the Illness

New Delhi:Ben-Gurion University of the Negev researchers have discovered that proteins called BMP5/7 are new promising potential therapeutics for Parkinson’s disease that could change the trajectory of the disorder. Their findings were published recently in the highly prestigious clinical neurology journal, Brain.

Parkinson’s disease, which affects over 10 million people worldwide, is characterized by the progressive degeneration of dopamine-secreting brain cells causing severe movement impairments. Today, it is thought that the protein alpha-synuclein, which is present in all human brains, plays a central role in the development of Parkinson’s disease by misfolding and forming toxic clumps in dopamine-secreting brain cells of affected individuals. Currently, all therapies used for Parkinson’s disease improve symptoms, however, their efficacy is unacceptably low in advanced stages of the illness and unfortunately, they do not stop or slow the disease progression.

Dr. Claude Brodski, MD and his team discovered that in dopamine-producing brain cells of Parkinson’s disease patients BMP5/7 signaling was significantly reduced – a change that could possibly contribute to the development of the disease. To study this possibility, the scientists genetically engineered mouse brains to reduce BMP5/7 signaling in dopamine-producing brain cells. Confirming their suspicion, reduced BMP5/7 signaling indeed leads to an accumulation of toxic alpha-synuclein clumps and loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. The researchers then hypothesized that if a lack of BMP5/7 signaling causes the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells, then administering BMP5/7 could protect these cells in a Parkinson’s disease model.

“Indeed, we found that BMP5/7 treatment can, in a Parkinson’s disease mouse model, efficiently prevent the accumulation of alpha-synuclein, loss of dopamine-producing brain cells and associated movement impairments. These findings are very exciting since they suggest that BMP5/7 could slow or stop the progression of Parkinson’s disease. Currently, we are focusing all our efforts on bringing our discovery closer to clinical application,” says Dr. Brodski of the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology, Faculty of Health Sciences and the Zlotowski Center for Neuroscience.
BGN Technologies, the technology transfer office of Ben-Gurion University, has filed several patent applications covering this breakthrough discovery.

Dr. Galit Mazooz Perlmuter, Senior VP Business Development Bio-Pharma at BGN Technologies, said, “There is a huge unmet need for new therapies to treat Parkinson’s disease, especially in the advanced stages of the disease. Dr. Brodski’s findings, although still in the early stages, offer a disease-modified drug target that will address the mechanism of this devastating condition. We are now seeking an industry partner for further development of this patent-pending invention.”
