Residents of Omaxe Royal Residency vaccinated

Omaxe Limited organized a paid vaccination drive in collaboration with Fortis Hospital for the residents of Omaxe Royal Residency. Covishield jabs were given to 110 residents on Sunday. The registration for the vaccination was done on the spot after checking the aadhar card. The campaign ran from 10 am to 3 pm, where the team of doctors spread awareness about the vaccination and also gave advice to the people to be vigilant.

The residents followed all the safety standards of distancing and hygiene. The guidelines set by the Health Department for the execution of the vaccination were followed. At the same time, the group is considering to push the campaign, so that more and more people are vaccinated. Earlier, the society had also organised a vaccination drive for 45 plus residents and 18 plus construction labours.

Minmole Varghese, Senior Nursing Officer, Fortis Hospital, Mulund shared her experience and said, “It is a continuous throttle of thinking about the various events happening every minute around you, specially in the current situation. It also gets overpowering emotionally at times, but then we need to go on. The country is currently in a crisis, but we are all trying our best. To get my mind off I do listen to some spiritual music and recommend everyone to take it one day at a time.”

Fortis Hospital Gurugram organises free kidney screening camp at Geetanjali Hospital Hisar

With significant rise in the incidences of renal failure due to Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKD) there is an urgent need to raise awareness among the masses. In view of the same Fortis Hospital, Gurugram organised a free kidney screening camp at Geetanjali Hospital, Hisar, on the occasion of World Kidney Day.

The camp saw a huge participation of over 200 local residents, who were thoroughly screened for renal ailments through blood and urine tests. Kidney failure or Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive disease that occurs when the kidneys are unable to filter the waste and toxins from the bloodstream irreversibly, over a period of time. Though the condition is incurable, with timely detection and early treatment, progression of the disease can be slowed down.

Of the total patients screened at the camp, around 34 (17%) of them were indicative of onset of kidney disorders as the test results revealed additional amounts of protein in their urine samples. Around 60 of them were diabetic, 45 hypertensive and 55 of them suffered from both diabetes and hypertension, which is a major risk factor for development of kidney disease.

“While the major risk factors adding on the burden of kidney disease in India include diabetes and hypertension, attributing to over 60% of the cases of CKD, and with such an alarming rise, the prevalence is expected to grow further. Cases of Chronic Kidney disease needs to be diagnosed at early stages for early treatment and effective management through medications. Devoid of timey screening, many patients present with advanced progression and at later stages where dialysis or renal transplant remains the last resort” said Dr Salil Jain, Director & HOD, Nephrology and Kidney Transplant, Fortis Hospital, Gurugram

Lack of awareness about this disease is one of the major factors contributing to the irreversible morbidity and mortality, making this the most under-reported and under-recognized ailments in India. As per the recent data provided by the CKD registry India, around 17.4% of the population suffers from CKD and approx. 2 lakh new patients are registered annually. It is estimated that around 10,000 to 12,000 patients get treatment in the form of dialysis and transplant and rest do not survive due to lack of infrastructure, awareness and finance. Thus, masses should be made aware that with timely detection, and advanced treatment modules in the field of nephrology, management of this disease can curb down the morbidity and mortality rate.

In order to prevent significant mortality and morbidity associated with kidney disease, it is important to undergo regular screening, with special focus on patients with diabetes, hypertension and those with family history of stone disease and Urinary tract infections.

“This huge gap can be minimized by more screening camps and getting hold of patients at an early stage and preventing them from reaching end kidney stage disease. End-stage kidney failures are only controlled by dialysis or kidney transplant. In comparison to a dialysis, transplant is definitely a better option in terms of quality and quantity of life as it improves the longevity, freedom of patients and the overall quality of life. If kidney diseases are treated timely, patients do not suffer from anaemia and the chances of stroke and heart disease in such patients is less as compared to the patients on dialysis.”  Added Dr Jain.

Rare Disorder keeps 25-year-old Rewari female bed-ridden for 1 year, revived successfully

Rewari: 25-year-old Rachna Devi, from Rewari, who got bed ridden last year due to a rare disorder was successfully treated at Fortis Hospital, Gurugram. The patient is now completely back to her daily routine without any complications.

Since January 2018, when Rachna started developing swelling and rashes throughout her body, gradually lost her ability to walk within 2 months. Upon various consultations at multiple Hospitals (even in Delhi) were not seeming to ease her complication. By this period, she completely got bed-ridden and was completely dependent on her family for support.

Since her condition was not even diagnosed, what she is suffering from, she was referred to Fortis Hospital, Gurugram by her relatives. On presentation she was diagnosed with Dermatomyositis, an uncommon inflammatory disease marked by muscle weakness and a distinctive skin rash. It is a form of arthritis where the joints, skin, muscles, and lungs can get inflamed.

Arthritis, known in common language as Gathiya, usually refers to pain, inflammation and swelling in the joints. It can affect one or multiple joints together. Dermatomyositis is one of the most uncommon types of arthritis. It can affect your lungs, skin, muscles, and eyes. The symptoms of dermatomyositis can appear suddenly or may develop over time. The most common signs and symptoms include skin changes, muscle weakness and swelling.

“When I saw the patient, she had red rash all over her face and body and had swelling in the complete body. She could barely walk, eat, or sit for a long period. I examined her and found that all the muscles were swollen, and she could barely lift her legs and hands. Various diagnostic tests revealed abnormal levels of CPK, Aldolase with high liver functions that confirmed this to be a case of dermatomyositis. Being a rare condition, her skin and muscle inflammation had gone undiagnosed initially, and hence her situation worsened to become bedridden. “said Dr Naval Mendiratta, Consultant, Rheumatology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram

The patient was administered and monitored with a combination of injections and tablets under her medication course for over 1 month in the hospital. With gradual response of medication and now recovered completely, the doses were reduced and now after one year, most of her medication have been stopped.

“During her last visit for routine follow-up, it was difficult to tell if she was the same female last year who was bed ridden. Due to her undiagnosed condition, she was almost on the verge of collapse and not treating her on time would have led to repercussions that would have been irreversible. It is important to note that arthritis is treatable provided you reach your rheumatologist on time.” added Dr Naval.

Mrs. Rachna Devi, the patient said, “In January 2018 I started to have fever and vomiting which did not go away from the medicines. I was hospitalised at a local hospital in Rewari for 8 days where instead of getting any relief, my symptoms started to worsen. During that period my body started developing rashes all over that was unbearable. Since then I had been trying to consult the expert doctor in local as well as in Delhi for over 2 months, when I noticed that my body had almost swollen to one-third of my actual size.  I could barely eat or stand.  Whatever I ate, would come back through my nose. My ears started to release water. I was totally dependent on my family to even use the restroom. I had lost all my hair in my entire body. After two months of suffering, my relative referred me to show at Fortis Hospital., Gurugram. After I met Dr Naval, he was sure of his diagnosis and after taking medicines for 2 months I started to see improvement. My swelling had gradually decreased; I stopped vomiting and could eat on my own. My rashes also improved and have now disappeared. After taking the medicines continuously for 6 months, I was back to my normal life. Earlier my children used to see me in pain and cry, now I can play with them like before. I cannot thank Dr Naval enough for what he has done for me. He has given me my life back.”
