Chi-Chi Daroga Happu Singh…

Daroga Happu Singh (Yogesh Tripathi) from &TV’s Happu Ki Ultan Paltan is one of the most loved characters on Indian Television today and has etched a special space the audience’s heart. From sporting a potbelly, a funny hairstyle to his most popular catchphrase, ‘Niyocchavar Kar Do’, he has created a striking image with his comic timing and acting prowess. But one thing many do not know is his uncanny resemblance to Chi-Chi, aka Govinda – the king of comedy and expressions! Yes, you heard it right! Says Yogesh’s co-actor and on-screen Dabangg Dulhaniya, Rajesh aka Kamna Pathak, “Yogesh is undoubtedly one of the finest actors I have had a chance to work with, and his expressions are outstanding. Whenever I see him, I am reminded of Govinda Ji! He has this uncanny resemblance to him. The way his expressions change, his eye movement, the smile reminds me of Chi-Chi. It is not easy to exhibit so many expressions or even be so much expressive. It is not easy, but Yogesh manages it with so much ease! He has his unique way. His expressions are quite similar to that of Govinda Ji. And when I told this Yogesh, he was on Cloud Nine, and I made his day!”. Reacting to Kamna’s compliment, Yogesh Tripathi, aka Daroga Happu Singh, says, “Jinhedekhdekhkar acting sikhi ho, jinserozprernalete ho aur unhikesath ap ko koi compare kare, issejyada Khushi kibaat aur kuchnahi ho sakti! I have grown up watching Govinda ji and he is my biggest inspiration. I started acting by imitating him jisse mere andar ka actor ubharkarbaharaaya. I remember when Kamna said that my acting resembles Govinda Ji, I felt honoured. It made me so happy! Agar logon ko mujhmeinunkijhalakdikhti hai toh ye mere liyesabsebada compliment hai.”

“Happu Ki Ultan Paltan is a dream come true for me” says Jasneet Kaur Kant

&TV’s Happu Ki Ultan Paltan that has been entertaining viewers and making them laugh until they cry will soon see a new face. Ready to step into Malaika’s shoes is actor Jasneet Kaur Kant. Born and brought up in Mumbai, Jasneet has done a few cameo roles on the small screen. Excited to be a part of the paltan, here is Jasneet talking about her role and show in a candid conversation.

1. Tell us about your role in the show, and how did you bag it? Is this your first role on TV?
I play the role of Malaika who is Happu (Yogesh Tripathi) and Rajesh’s (Kamna Pathak) second child. She is dabang in nature but at the same time, immensely protective when it comes to her family. Koi aafat aaye toh apne family ki kawach banne ko taiyaar rehti hai. A dedicated personality, Malaika wishes to join the Haryana Police force and maintains a strict discipline-driven lifestyle. From waking up early to working out and preparing meals, Malaika is always on track. Overall, she is a strong, mature and brave girl who always stands by the right and does not even hesitate to question her own parents if they are in the wrong. When I heard Malaika’s character narration, I instantly knew that this role was a perfect fit for me. I submitted my first audition video from home and eventually, was called to the production house where everything was finalised. While I have cameo role experiences, this is my first time in a full-fledged role. I am really excited and I hope the viewers resonate with my onscreen portrayal of Malaika.

2. Have you watched Happu Ki Ultan Paltan before? What do you like about the show?
I have not only watched Happu Ki Ultan Paltan, but have loved all the episodes till date! It is a light-hearted show that you can binge watch anytime of the day and still not get bored. Poore din ki mehnat ke baad, TV pe ye show dekh lo, toh bas saari thakan gayab si hojati hai. Kaafiyon ke liye toh ye ek stress buster show hai. Another aspect of the show is that every character comes with their own unique quirks and style of comedy. Also, the script itself is so funny that combining it with the effortless acting of the artists makes it as a comedy masterpiece on television!

3. How challenging is it to play a role that someone has played before ?
It is in a way challenging as someone has already played the character before and viewers are used to it. Also initially, there was a lot of curiosity going around that Kon hai jo Malaika ka role play karne wali hai? Will she be able to do justice to the character? Such questions are bound to come about and I have no qualms about it as it is human nature. But the best part is that whole production team is very supportive, they have given me the liberty to understand the character and own it my way! And the rest is on my shoulder to give justice and make space in the audience’s heart as their new Malaika!

4. What newness / freshness will you be bringing to the character?
Otherwise seen as a girl donning a typical Indian attire and mouthing dialogues with a Haryanvi accent to it, the Malaika of Happu Ki Ultan Paltan will be seen in a refreshing new avatar. While maintaining the essence of the character I shall be seen in a chic and rather urban look, wearing modern clothes. You will feel that your favourite Malaika has gone through a makeover. And of course, I will bring in certain improvisations to make the acting look effortless. So watch out for the new Malaika who is a combination of dabaangai andaaz with a stylish twist.

5. How has your experience been so far?
In the initial days, it was pretty challenging for me get used to the language, as I was not familiar with the Haryanvi dialect. But the team has been so supportive that eventually things fell into place. Now I am more comfortable with the language, agar koi abhi bhi mujhe koi sawal puchle toh mein Haryanvi mein uska jawab de sakti hun. My co-actors are so friendly and welcoming that they make work seem fun! All the actors irrespective of their experience in the industry, have made me feel so comfortable around them that I could walk straight to them ask for help if I am stuck with some scene. Looking forward to an amazing journey with the team of Happu Ki Ultan Paltan.

It has been a wild yet eventful journey with the talented team. I still recollect the initial days when we all were practicing in getting our character trails right to today, where we feel proud when people address us by our screen names.” Along with making the viewers roll with laughter, the show also portrays the two lead women – Rajesh played Kamna Pathak and Himani Shivpuri as Katori Amma in important roles giving out a strong messaging to the viewers. Kamna Pathak shares, “The one thing that sets Happu Ki Ultan Paltan apart from the rest is its positioning of women. The way female portrayals are embraced with both wit and humour is a beautiful amalgamation. Rajesh is a very relatable character and she comes across as a strong minded woman who effortlessly multi tasks between her family and taking on additional duties. I had realized that this character will be a hit right from the time it was narrated to me and agreed in an instant. Today I am proud to be a part of a show which is gaining appreciation from audiences across the nation. The viewers have been kind and supportive, I look forward to entertaining them for a lifetime!” Himani Shivpuri aka Katori Amma shares, “These 2 years of being known as Amma ji have been wonderful. Both on-set and off, my characterization has been etched. Hazar jawab tayar, Ammaji has certainly become a part of me. The show has given me a role that has brought a whole shift of dynamics to a patriarchal society. The way the stories deal with situations that are common with sensitivity and just the right amount of humour.”

&TV artists go an extra mile in appreciating their on-screen daughters. Daroga Happu Singh (Yogesh Tripathi) and Rajesh Singh (Kamna Pathak) from Happu Ki Ultan Paltan talk about their three beautiful daughters Ashna Kishore (Kate Singh), Zaara Warsi (Chamchi Singh) and Zahara Sethjiwala (Malaika Singh). In contrast, Gudiya Humari Sabhi Pe Bhari’s Sarla (Samta Sagar) and Radhe (Ravi Mahashabde) talk about their chatori Gudiya (Sarika Bahroliya). Yogesh Tripathi (Daroga Happu Singh) and Kamna Pathak (Rajesh Singh) collectively say, “We have three daughters Ashna Kishore (Kate Singh), Zaara Warsi (Chamchi Singh) and Zahara Sethjiwala (Malaika Singh) in Happu Ki Ultan Paltan who are not only talented but also very dedicated. While their character portrayal might look easy on screen, trust that many minute details need attention. Right from understanding what the script demands them to projecting it on screen, they do not stop until they get it right. While we know that their parents are proud of their achievements, we too would like to say that our Kate, Chamchi and Malaika are precious to us and the show.”

Expressing a similar emotion are Gudiya’s (Sarika Bahroliya) parents Samta Sagar (Sarla) and Ravi Mahashabde (Radhe) who say, “Gudiya from the very beginning has been unique be it when it comes to her personality or her overall approach to life. There is a lot to learn from her, and it sets her apart from everyone else. We, as parents took the onus upon ourselves to make Gudiya confident in her skin. In the same way, parents should focus on building up their child’s confidence and boosting their morale whenever they feel low or are doubting themselves. Zahara Sethjiwala (Malaika) says, “As someone who had to leave home for work, safety and security took centre stage. Feeling safe around people I trust is crucial for me and me, my co-actors on Happu Ki Ultan Paltan are like my family away from my family. As I have found my safe space in this city, I would like to draw everyone’s attention to the pressing issue of safety and encourage everyone to do their bit.” Making the most of every opportunity that comes her way is Sarika Bahroliya (Gudiya) who says, “We have all heard of impactful initiatives aimed at creating a healthy and safe environment while educating every girl child. But how many of us associate ourselves with something like this? In Gudiya Humari Sabhi Pe Bhari, we have tried to create a safe space for ourselves while also promoting individuality. Everyone’s voice to be equally heard and encouraged. After all, there is no tomorrow without a girl.”

The state is a complete delight and full of surprises and experiences. Apart from the advent developments, the state has preserved its local arts and crafts so beautifully. The Dhokra art is astonishing, and their sparkling fairs and festivals are to look out for! It is amazing to see how being one of the youngest states, Chhattisgarh has accomplished so much. I have a few lamps, showpieces, and a Ganpati idol which I bought on my last visit to the state which holds a very special place in my heart.

On Chhattisgarh Rajyotsava, my best wishes and compliments to the people of Chattishgarh.” Adding to this, Tanvi Dogra (Swati) comments, “Chhattisgarh boasts of a rich cultural heritage amidst crusty cuisine, lively dances, music and the lively people with their amiable languages. The state has preserved its archaeological sites and heritage, which is amazing. Bastar is one of the places to visit for its impeccable beauty, indigenous wildlife and their zealous Dussehra festivities. Naya Raipur, a first smart city, is remarkable and a hub of trade and hospitality. Hearty congratulations to everyone on Chhattisgarh Rajyotsav and wish it continues to touch new heights of development!”
