Saveetha College of Occupational Therapy conducted a National Conference on Autism. Prof. Dr. S. Suresh Kumar, The Vice Chancellor, of SIMATS inaugurated the program and addressed the gathering with his inspiring speech, in which he had mentioned that SIMATS is planning to open research centres for adults who are affected by Autism. Saveetha Child Development Centre(SCDC), Part of Saveetha Medical College and Hospital provides state-of-the-art Therapy services for Autism children with modern therapeutic techniques.

Dr. Sivapriya, The Conference Coordinator welcomed the gathering. The Guest Speakers of the Conference were Dr. LalD. V. Nair, Developmental and Behavioural Paediatrician, Saveetha Medical College, Dr. Poongodi Bala, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Mr. Joseph Thomas Raj Bedford, Lecturer, Christian Medical College, Mr.Ramanathan, Assistant Professor, SLHS, Mrs.Arthi Baranidharan, Director of Impower rehabilitation centre, and Mrs.Jasmine Christy, Special Educator.

The speakers delivered lectures on their respective topics, imparting valuable knowledge to the attendees. The event featured the release of an updated version of the Tamil Nadu Clinical Directory, Parents home program guideline Book, and Research articles published in the year 2022-2023 based on Autism.

Nearly 500 students and professionals attended the Conference. The program also included various competitions such as Quiz and Poster Presentation. The Winners of the competitions were awarded and participation certificates were distributed to the attendees.

On account of the World Autism Awareness Day along with the National Conference, Saveetha College of Occupational Therapy in collaboration with Chaitanya Therapy Centre also conducted an Awareness Rally at SIMATS.

The Chief Guest Mr.Sreenath, Actor and Director, inaugurated the rally by waving the flag. He also released the Autism awareness Pamphlet and started the signature campaign. Dr.M.Arun Kumar, Principal of SCOT and EC member- AIOTA, the event Coordinator Dr.S.Sivapriya, SCOT, Other faculty members, Mrs.Geeva Kamalraj, Director, Chaitanya Therapy Center, Student Coordinators, and the Students from SCOT and other colleges participated in the event.

As a part of the Awareness Campaign various Cultural events and Competitions such as Flashmob, Face painting, Doodling, Rangoli, and Photography were conducted in which the Students took an active part.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s Women-Only Cybersecurity Conference ShaktiCon to begin April 9, 2021

Hyderabad: More than 3,000 women hackers from India and around the world are expected to attend Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s three-day global conference on cybersecurity called ShaktiCon that begins on April 9, 2021. In the run-up to the event, a 36-hour, women-only Capture the Flag (CTF) contest would be held from April 3-5, 2021, in which contestants will face challenges from the fields of cryptography, reversing, forensics, Pwn and web exploitation.

ShaktiCon is a completely free global conference focused on inspiring, training, and upskilling women in the field of cybersecurity. It offers training programmes to nurture women talent in the field, a global cyber-security conference with talks and panel discussions by leading women professionals in cyber-security, and a women-only CTF hacking contest to showcase talent and win prizes and scholarships. The event is organized by Team Shakti, India’s first and top-ranked women-only CTF team of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.

The pre-conference global cybersecurity contest held in December 2020 attracted more than 1,500 women hackers with 828 teams from five continents. The participants, which have now grown to more than 3,000 women, received free access to premium learning platforms such as TryHackMe and PentesterLabs, practice challenges and training videos. They will be attending the upcoming ShaktiCon conference and participating in the CTF hacking contest.

Said Prof. Vipin Pavithran, Assistant Professor, Amrita Center for Cybersecurity Systems & Networks, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, who is the organizer of ShaktiCon: “Cybersecurity is considered a masculine domain and most women don’t see it as a viable career path. The cybersecurity industry needs more women, and alsohas to open up for them. Demand is outstripping supply in this field. In the next five years, the number of jobs in cybersecurity will triple. Over 3.5 million new cybersecurity jobs would be created in 2021 alone. Despite this, women comprise only 20% of the total workforce in cybersecurity, and only 1% of them are in top leadership positions. The future of the cybersecurity industry depends on its ability to attract, retain and promote women, who represent a skilled and under-tapped resource.”

He added: “The focus of our annual conference ShaktiCon is advancing the leadership and professional development of women in the field of cybersecurity and showcase the next generation of offensive and defensive security technologies. ShaktiCon offers a platform for female researchers and hackers from around the world to close the skills gap with men and help fix the gender gap in cybersecurity.”

The keynote address at the ShaktiCon would be delivered by Rinki Sethi, VP and Chief Information Security Officer at Twitter Inc., followed by talks and training by eminent women cybersecurity experts such as Sung Lee from VMware, Sanju Misra from Linde, Mina Sheikhalishahi from Eindhoven University of Technology, Allison Marie Naaktgeboren from Portland State University, Bhavna Soman from Microsoft and SreepriyaChalakkal from Siemens.

Team Shakti is India’s first and only women CTF team consisting of budding young female minds who want to make a difference in the field of cyber-security and fix the gender gap. The team participates in “Capture The Flag” competitions and provides training to school and university students, conducts CTFs, develops cybersecurity tools and participates in bug bounties. “Team Shakti has become one of the leading women-only CTF teams in India within just two years” said Prof. Vipin Pavithran, the founder and mentor of Team Shakti. The Club, based at the varsity’s Amritapuri campus, is run by the students themselves with the help of research scholars, alumni, and faculty members.

SRM AP faculty receives the prestigious grant by DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance

Dr. Sutharsan Govindarajan, Assistant Professor, Department of Biology, SRM University-AP has been awarded the prestigious ‘Early Career Fellowship’ grant by DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance, funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Wellcome Trust, United Kingdom. The fellowship supports outstanding young scientists to pursue high-quality research in the field of biomedical science and establish themselves as independent researchers in India. Dr. Sutharsan sought a total research grant of 1.1 crore for a period of 5 years as a DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance Early career fellow. The India Alliance grants are highly competitive and are based on the profile of the applicant and the novelty and the importance of the proposed research. Nationwide only less than 10 Early Career grants are awarded every year. Dr Sutharsan is a highly accomplished scientist, having published research articles in highly reputed journals, including the most prestigious Nature and Nature Microbiology. Through this fellowship, Dr. Sutharsan will establish an independent research laboratory at SRM University – AP with the support of Prof. Jayaseelan, Head, Department of Biology, and the fellowship supervisor of the project.

In this project, Dr. Sutharsan plans to venture and explore the biology of a novel class of bacteriophages called Jumbo-phages. “Bacteriophages, which are the most abundant biological entities on the planet, are viruses that infect bacteria but do not harm humans. Jumbo-phages, as the name suggests, are giant viruses with large genome. A sneak peek into their lifestyle during my postdoctoral research led me,  to realize that these phages build fascinating complex structures inside the bacteria they infect. Such complex structures are well known to be formed in eukaryotic cells like human cells but was not thought to be made by bacteriophages, which have evolved billions of years before eukaryotes. Thus, studying how such cellular structures are formed by jumbo-phages provides a unique opportunity to investigate the origin of complex life” informs Dr. Sutharsan. He also explains that the proposed research has several biotechnological applications such as phage therapy and synthetic biology.

Dr. Sutharsan further shares, “This is one the best fellowships a young scientist can obtain in India. It is an honour, prestige and a recognition for the scientist as well as to the University. In the next 5 years, I anticipate major fundamental discoveries in the field of bacteriophage biology and evolution”.
