NIT Rourkela Joins Hands With ISRO, Tea Board for AI-Powered Tea Plantation Monitoring

Rourkela, Sept. 7 (UDN): The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela has entered into a tripartite agreement with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Tea Board India to develop artificial intelligence and geospatial technologies for monitoring tea plantations.

NIT Rourkela Joins Hands With ISRO, Tea Board for AI-Powered Tea Plantation Monitoring

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the Regional Remote Sensing Centre (RRSC-East), NRSC, in Kolkata on August 27 as part of the three-year research project titled “CHAYANKAN: Comprehensive AI-based Geospatial Data Analytics for Tea Plantation Monitoring.”

The project, which began in April 2026, aims to develop technology-driven solutions for mapping tea plantations, estimating crop yields and predicting the occurrence of pests and diseases.

Researchers will integrate satellite imagery and data collected through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with field-level observations. Advanced machine learning techniques and modelling will then be used to analyse the data and generate actionable insights.

The initiative is expected to improve scientific assessment of tea plantation health and productivity while helping stakeholders make timely, evidence-based decisions.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended virtually by NRSC Director Dr Prakash Chauhan and NIT Rourkela Director Prof K. Umamaheshwar Rao. Tea Board India Director (Tea Development) S. Soundararajan attended the programme in person.

Dr Sushil Kumar Srivastav, Associate Director and Chief General Manager (Regional Centres), NRSC, ISRO; Dr Amrita Chakraborty, Secretary, Tea Board India; and Prof Saurav Chatterjee, Dean (SRICCE), NIT Rourkela, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.

Scientists and senior officials from all three institutions were present during the programme. Dr Arati Paul, Principal Investigator from RRSC-East, along with Co-Principal Investigators Dr Anima Biswal, J. Nalini and Dr Anup Nandy of NIT Rourkela, presented details of the CHAYANKAN project.

The collaborating institutions highlighted the potential of combining remote sensing, artificial intelligence and geospatial technologies to address challenges facing the tea sector.

The research is expected to provide better insights into plantation conditions, improve productivity assessment and facilitate early forecasting of pest and disease outbreaks.

The collaboration marks a significant step towards strengthening technology-based research in the tea sector and bringing advanced digital tools into plantation management.

Auto Demand Roars Back: India Records 24.23 Lakh Sales in August

New Delhi, Sep 7: India’s automobile market delivered its strongest-ever August performance, with vehicle retail sales crossing 24.23 lakh units, marking a 17.51 per cent rise from the same month last year.

Auto Demand Roars Back: India Records 24.23 Lakh Sales in August

The strong numbers reflect steady improvement in consumer demand, with two-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles all contributing to the sector’s growth.

Passenger vehicle sales crossed the four-lakh mark for the first time in August, reaching 4,02,398 units, up 16.14 per cent year-on-year. The two-wheeler segment also posted its best-ever August sales, providing a major boost to overall automobile retail.

The industry is now entering the crucial festive season, when vehicle purchases traditionally increase across India. New launches, promotional schemes and easier financing options are expected to support demand as automakers and dealers prepare for a potentially stronger sales period.

Consumer preferences are also changing. Alternative-fuel passenger vehicles, including CNG models, hybrids and electric vehicles, together accounted for nearly 42 per cent of passenger vehicle sales in August, moving ahead of petrol-powered cars. The shift highlights growing consumer interest in vehicles that offer lower running costs as well as newer technologies.

The rise in automobile sales has implications beyond vehicle manufacturers. Higher demand can benefit auto-component suppliers, dealerships, logistics operators, vehicle financiers, workshops and other businesses linked to the automotive ecosystem. It can also provide support to manufacturing activity and employment.

However, the sharp year-on-year growth needs to be viewed against a relatively weak base in August 2025, when buyers had held back purchases amid uncertainty over proposed GST-related changes. This could make the growth rate less pronounced in the coming months.

Despite that base effect, the record August numbers have given the automobile industry positive momentum going into the festive season. Companies are expected to focus on new models, alternative-fuel vehicles and attractive financing schemes to sustain buyer interest.

The latest performance also shows that India’s automobile market is evolving alongside rising consumer demand, with SUVs, hybrids, electric vehicles and other alternative-fuel models gaining a larger place in the market.

Cyara Names Ben Corser to Lead Asia-Pacific Growth

Asia-Pacific is one of Cyara’s most important growth markets. Cyara is trusted by some of Australia’s most prominent organizations, including two of the Big Four banks, two of the country’s three national mobile network operators, and the country’s largest supermarket retailer. Corser’s appointment puts dedicated regional leadership behind that demand.

“Australia is where Cyara began, and it remains an incredibly important market for our business. We see a significant opportunity to deepen our investment here and across APAC as enterprises rethink how they deploy and govern AI in customer-facing environments,” said Sushil Kumar, CEO of Cyara. “Ben brings the regional experience, customer focus and go-to-market leadership we need for this next chapter. His appointment is an important step in strengthening our relationships with customers and partners and expanding Cyara’s presence across the region.”

Corser brings extensive experience leading cloud, software and go-to-market organizations throughout Asia-Pacific. Most recently at NiCE, he has held senior leadership positions at global technology companies including Matterport, SAP, EMC, Nokia and Microsoft. Throughout his career, Corser has built high-performing teams, developed strategic partner ecosystems and led growth and transformation initiatives for enterprise technology businesses across APAC.

“Enterprises across APAC are moving quickly to put AI into real customer interactions, but scaling that technology requires more than innovation – it requires trust,” said Ben Corser, General Manager and SVP, Go-to-Market for APAC at Cyara. “Cyara has a unique opportunity to help organizations prove their AI agents and customer journeys are ready for the real world. I’m excited to build on Cyara’s roots in Australia, work even more closely with our customers and partners, and expand the company’s impact throughout APAC.”

Corser joins ahead of the Cyara Agentic CX Summit in Melbourne on Sept. 8, which brings together CX leaders, customers and partners from across the region.

During the Summit, Kumar will discuss why trust, rather than capability alone, is increasingly becoming a constraint on enterprises looking to move AI agents from pilots into production. Amitha Pulijala, Chief Product Officer at Cyara, will also showcase innovations within Cyara’s Agentic Platform including how enterprises can prove AI agent behavior and end-to-end customer journeys before deployment while maintaining visibility into quality and compliance once those agents are live. Through a live demonstration of Cyara AI Trust Observability, attendees will see how enterprises can move from simply monitoring whether AI agents are available to continuously proving whether they are behaving as intended.

Cyara will continue its regional engagement at Genesys Xperience APAC in Sydney, Nov. 11–12, where the company will explore how enterprises can assure customer outcomes as AI agents create increasingly dynamic and non-deterministic customer interactions.
