LIC Gets RBI Green Light to Raise ICICI Bank Stake to 9.99 pc

New Delhi, Sep 5: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to acquire up to 9.99 per cent of the paid-up share capital or voting rights in ICICI Bank, marking a significant development in the country’s banking and financial services sector.

The approval allows LIC to increase its exposure to one of India’s leading private sector banks, subject to applicable regulatory requirements.

The move highlights the growing importance of institutional investment in India’s banking sector. LIC, one of the country’s largest financial institutions, has a substantial investment portfolio and its increased participation in ICICI Bank could further strengthen its position in the private banking space.

For ICICI Bank, the development brings greater participation from a major domestic institutional investor. A higher institutional holding can also contribute to deeper market participation and reinforce investor confidence in the bank.

The RBI approval, however, only permits LIC to raise its aggregate holding up to the 9.99 per cent limit. Any increase in the actual shareholding will remain subject to applicable banking, securities and foreign-exchange regulations.

The development comes as India’s financial sector continues to expand alongside strong domestic economic activity. Greater institutional participation in banks can support the broader financial ecosystem by strengthening investment flows and improving the depth of the capital market.

For LIC, the approval provides additional flexibility to increase its investment in the banking sector, while for ICICI Bank, it represents an opportunity to have continued participation from a major long-term domestic investor.

Overall, the move underlines the increasing role of large institutional investors in India’s financial markets and comes at a time when the country’s banking sector remains a key driver of credit, investment and economic activity.

Rising Electronics Content in Cars Opens Major Growth Opportunity for Indian Auto Industry

New Delhi, Sep 5: Electronics are becoming an increasingly important part of modern vehicles, and this shift could create a major growth opportunity for India’s auto-component industry over the next few years.

According to the BCG-ACMA report, electronics could account for 45-55 per cent of a vehicle’s cost by 2030, compared with around 30-35 per cent in 2020. The rise is being driven by connected features, advanced safety systems, sensors, infotainment, electric powertrains and other technology.

For India, the opportunity is significant because electrical and electronic components accounted for only about 12 per cent of domestic auto-component supply by value in FY25. This leaves considerable room for Indian suppliers to increase their presence in a rapidly expanding part of the vehicle value chain.

The report points to growing demand for products such as sensors, electronic control units, power electronics, connectivity systems, battery-management systems and advanced safety technologies. As vehicles become more software-driven, suppliers will also need stronger capabilities in electronics, software and engineering.

Safety technology is already gaining ground in India. The penetration of advanced driver-assistance systems in new passenger vehicles increased from less than 1 per cent in 2021 to around 8 per cent in 2025, adding to demand for electronic safety components.

Electrification is creating another major market. Electric vehicle registrations across categories increased from around 1.4 lakh in FY21 to about 25 lakh in FY26, increasing demand for batteries, electric motors, power electronics and thermal-management systems.

The auto-component industry itself has expanded strongly, reaching around $80 billion in FY25, and is targeting about $200 billion by 2030. Exports have also increased, with the industry aiming to significantly expand its presence in global supply chains.

However, the transition will require greater investment in technology and skills. The report highlights that many Indian suppliers still depend on external companies for product designs, while shortages of talent in electronics, software and mechatronics remain a challenge.

For Indian manufacturers, deeper localisation of automotive electronics could reduce dependence on imports while allowing domestic companies to capture a larger share of the value created by new vehicle technologies.

The shift could also support investment, skilled employment, research and development and exports. With the global automobile industry becoming increasingly electronic and technology-driven, building domestic capabilities in this area could become an important part of India’s next phase of automotive growth.

951 Indian Students Graduate with MD Degrees from Gullas College of Medicine in the Philippines

Cebu City, Philippines, Sep 05: The Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino, Salinas Drive, Lahug, Cebu City, hosted the 46th Commencement Exercises of Gullas College of Medicine, Inc. for Batch Xanthron 2026 on August 28, 2026. Held across two sessions, the ceremony saw 951 Indian students graduate with Doctor of Medicine degrees, as more than 1,000 graduates from across the world came together for the commencement, marking a significant milestone for Indian students pursuing medical education abroad.

951 Indian Students Graduate with MD Degrees from Gullas College of Medicine in the Philippines

A key academic highlight of the graduating batch was that all Top 10 students of Batch Xanthron 2026 hailed from India, emphasising the strong academic performance of Indian students at the institution.

Held under the theme “GCM Physician: Rooted in Compassion, Driven by Excellence, Committed to Service,” the ceremony marked an important moment for the graduating doctors, bringing together academic achievement, leadership recognition and the culmination of years of medical education in the Philippines. The occasion also highlighted the strong presence of Indian students within GCM’s international medical community.

The ceremony was graced by distinguished guests, including Michael Alexander Ang, Owner, The Manila Times; Governor Edwin I. Jubahib; and Dr. Karthik Raj Manoharan, Perioperative Physician specialising in liver transplant anaesthesiology and transplant critical care.

The graduating students were also recognised for their leadership and contribution to student life. Parekh Sahil Dineshbhai received the Outstanding Leadership Award, while Godase Uday Prasenkumar and Upadhyay Purva were presented with the Student Services Leadership Award.

Adding further distinction to the graduating cohort were the achievements of its students in the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), India’s qualifying examination for foreign medical graduates seeking to practise medicine in the country. Dr. Dabgar Niravkumar Kalidas secured Rank 2 in the January 2026 FMGE, while Dr. Khushi Nilaybhai Sanghvi emerged as the Top Scorer in the January 2026 FMGE.

As with previous years, the ceremony followed GCM’s established commencement traditions, including the presentation and conferring of degrees, the investiture and imposition of hoods and caps by parents and guardians, and the awarding of honours and citations. The graduates then took the Hippocratic Oath, formally entering the medical profession, before being inducted into the GCM Alumni Association.

Commenting on the occasion, Dr. David Pillai, CEO and Founding Chairman, Transworld Educare, said,

The graduation of 951 Indian students from Gullas College of Medicine is a significant achievement and a proud moment for their families, faculty and everyone who has supported their journey. Their academic and FMGE achievements reflect the dedication and perseverance they have demonstrated throughout their medical education. As they step into the medical profession, I hope they remain guided by compassion, excellence and a commitment to service, while carrying forward the knowledge and experience gained during their time in the Philippines.

The 46th Commencement Exercises also added another chapter to the legacy of Gullas College of Medicine, which has produced more than 5,000 alumni and medical graduates worldwide since its founding in 1977. Over the years, the institution has continued to bring together students from different backgrounds and nationalities, creating a global community of medical professionals.

For the Indian graduates, the ceremony marked the culmination of a demanding journey that began with the pursuit of medical education overseas and concluded with the achievement of their MD degrees. The strong academic performance of Batch Xanthron 2026, coupled with the achievements of its students in the FMGE further highlights the growing appeal of the Philippines among Indian medical aspirants.

SAIL Achieves Record August Steel Production, Sales Jump 13 percent as Borrowings Fall by Rs 870 Crore

State-owned steel giant Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has delivered one of its strongest monthly performances in recent years, posting record production and double-digit sales growth in August 2026. The Maharatna PSU achieved its highest-ever August output of hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel, while robust domestic demand and improved retail sales helped push overall sales volumes to 1.87 million tonnes. The performance further strengthens SAIL’s position as one of the key drivers of India’s expanding steel consumption story.

SAIL’s production numbers reflected strong operational momentum across its integrated steel plants. Crude steel production increased 8% year-on-year to 1.68 million tonnes, while hot metal production rose 9% to 1.78 million tonnes. Saleable steel production also edged up to 1.69 million tonnes, marking a new August record for the company. The growth comes as India’s infrastructure, construction and manufacturing sectors continue to generate healthy demand for domestically produced steel.

SAIL Achieves Record August Steel Production, Sales Jump 13 percent as Borrowings Fall by ₹870 Crore

The company also reported an impressive commercial performance during the month. Overall steel sales surged 13% year-on-year to 1.871 million tonnes, compared with 1.654 million tonnes in August last year, supported by strong demand across Tier-1 and Tier-2 retail markets. Cash collections jumped 23%, reflecting better customer realisations and disciplined commercial execution. SAIL also recorded its highest-ever August sales in value-added steel products, including cold rolled, galvanized and alloy steel, while reducing inventory levels through faster supply-chain movement and improved market servicing.

SAIL’s growth was also visible in its supplies to the railway sector, a major consumer of long steel products. Rail supplies to Indian Railways increased 5% to 1.23 lakh tonnes, while supplies of long rails touched an all-time monthly high of 1.12 lakh tonnes, registering 11% growth over the corresponding period last year. On the financial front, the company reduced its borrowings by ₹870 crore compared to its position on March 31, 2026, strengthening its balance sheet and improving financial flexibility.

The strong performance extended beyond August. During the April-August 2026 period, SAIL’s cumulative steel sales reached 7.71 million tonnes, up 5.6% over the same period last year despite global market volatility and fluctuating steel prices. Higher sales of finished and processed steel, an improved product mix and wider regional market penetration helped sustain growth during the five-month period.

Commenting on the company’s performance, Dr. A.K. Panda, Chairman and Managing Director, SAIL, said the results demonstrate a strong alignment between operational efficiency, commercial execution and financial discipline. He added that ongoing expansion projects, improving domestic demand and India’s long-term infrastructure push position SAIL to accelerate growth while making a significant contribution to the country’s rising steel consumption and manufacturing ambitions.

Global dialogue shapes unified digital policy priorities

Opinions on key telecom and tech issues help set the stage for ITU’s Plenipotentiary Conference

Nassau, The Bahamas, 4 September 2026 – Representatives of governments, industry, academia, civil society and the technical community at the World Telecommunication/ICT Policy Forum 2026 (WTPF-26) today adopted a set of Opinions on critical issues shaping the digital future.

ITU – the UN agency for digital technologies – organized the three-day Forum in Nassau, The Bahamas, as an opportunity for a global policy dialogue addressing the digital divide, sustainability, resilience, space connectivity and innovation.

The non-binding Opinions come two months before ITU’s Plenipotentiary Conference 2026 (PP-26), helping to build consensus approaches on major global information and communication technology (ICT) issues ahead of ITU’s highest decision-making meeting.

“We came to Nassau determined to move from vision to action to accelerate an inclusive, sustainable, resilient and innovative digital future,” said Doreen Bogdan-Martin, ITU Secretary-General. “The five Opinions adopted at WTPF sharpen our focus to do just that, while keeping people at the centre of digital transformation as we head to PP-26.”

As artificial intelligence (AI), space-based connectivity and rapidly changing digital infrastructure reshape the global digital landscape, the Opinions offer guidance to ITU membership on key challenges, including:

  • Bridging digital divides, particularly on gender and age as well as skills and connectivity
  • Green digital transformation: climate change and environmental sustainability
  • Resilience of telecommunication and ICT systems
  • Space connectivity
  • Strengthening ICT-centric innovation ecosystems and entrepreneurship

“Small island developing states must not simply be affected by global digital policy, but be at the table helping to shape it,” said Sebastian Bastian, Bahamas Minister of Innovation and National Development. “For The Bahamas, the opportunity before us is to move from access to capability to opportunity, building the skills and conditions that allow our people to benefit meaningfully from emerging technologies.”

The Forum, which brought together a multistakeholder community of over 500 participants in person and online from 2 to 4 September, was the seventh in the WTPF event series. ITU convenes WTPF periodically to ensure policy discussions keep up with rapid technological change.

Previous Forums have helped the international community navigate other major shifts – from the emergence of new telecommunications services and Internet telephony to broadband, Internet-related public policy issues and on new and emerging technologies such as AI.

“The issues before us are shaping the future of societies and economies around the world,” said Randol Dorsett, Chair of WTPF and the Bahamas Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA). “The work we have done in Nassau has produced practical, forward-looking outcomes that should influence global telecommunications and ICT policy for years to come.”

A high-level Strategic Dialogue WTPF-26 preceded WTPF on 1 September with a discussion on the choices needed to shape the digital future.

The Strategic Dialogue highlighted the perspectives of small island developing states and other vulnerable economies to explore how policy, investment, innovation and international cooperation can turn technological progress into meaningful benefits for people everywhere.

Niharika Singhania Delivers Stellar Performance at Brussels Stephex Masters With a Clear Round at 1.45m and Finishing Sixth in a CSI2* Grand Prix Represents a Significant Level of International Performance

Niharika Singhania Delivers Stellar Performance at Brussels Stephex Masters With a Clear Round at 1.45m and Finishing Sixth in a CSI2* Grand Prix Represents a Significant Level of International Performance

Business Wire India

Key Highlights:

  • Breaking Barriers: Niharika Singhania continues to shatter glass ceilings as a prominent female equestrian athlete, earning respect and commanding elite arenas in a traditionally male-dominated sport.
  • Double International Accolades: Honoured with two prestigious international awards, recognizing her skill, resilience, and rapid emergence on the global stage.
  • Elite European Results: Delivered a clear first round on 29 August in the 1.45m CSI2 Grand Prix at the Brussels Stephex Masters with First To Cash Out, wrapping up a sixth-place result amidst world-class competition.
  • Championing Female Excellence in a Traditionally Male-Dominated Sport

In a sport where male athletes historically dominate, 19-year-old Indian equestrian Niharika Singhania is proving that vision and skill transcend traditional boundaries. Cementing her status as one of India’s most extraordinary sportswomen, Niharika – who added two major International accolades to her record last year – delivered a stellar performance at the prestigious Brussels Stephex Masters in Belgium on 29 August 2026. Competing against a strong international field, the 19-year-old produced an impressive clear first round over the demanding 1.45m course with her Asian Games partner First To Cash Out to earn a place in the jump-off. Completing the jump-off in 43.65 seconds with eight faults to take a sixth-place finish.

Niharika’s exceptional consistency earned her a coveted selection for this year’s Asian Games team – a landmark milestone for the young athlete – before her competitive show-jumping category was unfortunately dropped prior to the Games. Undeterred by the administrative decision, Niharika continues to let her performances speak. She is the youngest and only woman in India’s four-member show jumping team and that makes her journey more about the visibility of women in sport where access to horses, international competition and sustained training is demanding. Niharika has spoken openly about wanting to inspire younger girls to take up the sport and compete at the highest level.

Speaking on her performance, Niharika Singhania said, “Honestly, I think it’s something I can be really proud of my team and myself for. To have this kind of result in a 2* Grand Prix, and especially in Brussels, which is such a prestigious venue, is a dream. Cash is just such an incredible horse, and I’m so grateful to have him as my partner. More than anything, it’s just an extremely satisfying feeling for me to be able to put the Indian flag up there in the rankings in such a European-dominated field at this level.”

Niharika’s performance in Brussels also brings into sharp focus the question of how India identifies, supports and develops its leading equestrian athletes for major international competitions. The Brussels Stephex Masters is one of Europe’s important international show-jumping events, attracting riders and horses from across the world. Producing a clear round at 1.45m and finishing sixth in a CSI2* Grand Prix represents a significant level of international performance for a 19-year-old Indian athlete.

Yashaan Khambatta, Coach of Niharika Singhania, said, “Niharika’s stellar performance and finish in the 1.45m CSI2* Grand Prix at Brussels Stephex Masters is a very significant result for a 19-year-old Indian rider. The clear first round demonstrates both her ability and her growing confidence with First To Cash Out. Malaysian Palm Oil Exports Slip as Indian Demand Cools in August

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 4: Malaysia’s palm oil exports weakened in August as softer demand from India weighed on shipments, highlighting growing pressure on the world’s edible-oil market even as palm oil prices remain close to a two-year high.

Malaysia is estimated to have shipped around 1.3 million tonnes of palm oil in August, about 8 per cent lower than in July. At the same time, inventories are estimated to have risen nearly 6 per cent, reaching their highest level since January.

The decline in Indian purchases is significant for the global market because India is among the world’s largest edible-oil importers. A prolonged slowdown in buying could leave Malaysian exporters with larger inventories and increase competition for overseas markets.

For India, weaker palm oil imports could also influence the sourcing decisions of refiners and food companies. If palm oil remains expensive, businesses may increasingly compare it with alternatives such as soybean and sunflower oil, depending on relative prices and availability.

Palm oil prices have gained around 7 per cent in the third quarter and are trading near their highest levels in about two years. The price strength comes despite weaker exports, reflecting concerns that global supplies could tighten in the months ahead.

Weather remains a key risk. The possibility of an El Niño pattern affecting palm production has raised concerns about future supplies, while Indonesia’s expanding use of palm oil for biofuel production could reduce the amount available for international trade.

Higher palm oil prices could also raise input costs for food manufacturers, particularly companies producing packaged foods, snacks, bakery products and other items that use vegetable oils. For consumers, any sustained increase in edible-oil costs could eventually add pressure to household food budgets.

The combination of weaker Indian demand and rising Malaysian inventories may create some short-term pressure on the market. However, potential production disruptions and stronger biofuel demand could limit any significant decline in prices.

Market participants will now watch Indian buying, Malaysian inventory levels and weather conditions closely. The direction of these factors will determine whether the current weakness in exports develops into a broader slowdown or proves to be a temporary pause in demand.
