Here is why small businesses are choosing online marketing over offline

By Kunal Shah| Director | Rank My Business

Running a small business comes with big challenges.

Whether is it finding customers or investors, managing workflow with limited resources, setting up a team, building a brand, bringing in operational efficiencies with limited capital, and tackling unexpected hurdles each day – it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that small business owner usually have their hands full. Amidst all of this, we cannot blame them for relegating marketing efforts to the backseat. There just wouldn’t be enough bandwidth, and we totally understand that.

But we are witnessing a welcome shift happening, as a growing group of entrepreneurs is realizing the importance of marketing right from the onset, and not as an afterthought. As a digital marketer, it is even more heartening that most of them are choosing online marketing channels over traditional offline channels. Now, this is not to say that the offline modes don’t work.

After all, traditional marketing, be it a TV commercial, a radio spot, a large hoarding in a prominent location or even POS posters can definitely create an impact. But it is also a fact that all of these require a huge marketing investment to even create such material, and an equally huge, if not higher, investment to distribute it and have it seen – with no guaranteed return on investment. This can be a tall order and a tricky situation, especially for a small business. It isn’t surprising then, that digital marketing is finding a lot of takers among SMEs today. If you are a small business owner who hasn’t yet explored the online marketing realm or is hesitant to try it, I’m sure that you’d be eager to know what is it about digital that makes it tick for others like you.

Here are my top 6 reasons why a lot of startups and SMEs prefer online marketing over offline.

1. A bigger marketplace

Let’s be honest. You could have the largest hoarding in the middle of the city square, or a well-done TVC that airs on prime time television. Despite all this, there is no surety that it would really be seen by all who matter, as there will be physical restrictions of time and space. Thankfully, the digital realm allows you to transcend these limitations to a large extend, and your communication can be seen by a much wider audience, no matter where they are or what time they log on. And given that most people stay logged on all day, it is easy to make the whole world your playground, if you so wish.

2. Precision Targeting

This, in my opinion, is what makes digital marketing really score over traditional, and continues to delight marketers even today. The ability to target, reach and connect with a very specific audience is exclusive to digital. Be it on search, social, in-app advertising, or even display, you will have the power and ability to target people who are more likely to be your potential customers – by demographic, psychographic, and intent filters. You can then avoid wasting time, money, and effort on reaching your audience. If I were to use a metaphor, you need not cast a very wide net and wait in the indistinct hope of catching the type of fish you want.

3. Measurability

This is my second most favourite aspect of digital marketing. Almost everything on digital is accurately measurable, giving it a superior edge over any other form of large-scale, above-the-line marketing. Is your creative hitting the right notes? You can check. Are your social media efforts engaging enough? It is easy to check. Are your ads driving prospects to your landing page? You can check. Is your campaign giving you leads? You can check. I could really go on and on here, but I’m sure you get the picture. The biggest advantage of being measurable is the fact that you can tweak and evolve your campaign as you go along, without having to second guess the results. You don’t even need to spend too much money either to calculate your RoI, as there are many tools available that can do the same.

4. Higher Conversions

Unlike traditional channels, digital marketing channels have proven to provide better conversion rates. Conversion rate basically refers to the percentage of your target audience that performs the intended action. For instance, if the objective of your campaign is to collect leads, and 10 out of every 100 people who visit your landing page fill up your lead form, then that is a conversion rate of 10%. This is possible as online marketing allows you to precisely target even niche audiences, and even tweak your communication and run different campaigns for different target groups, increasing the likelihood of them wanting to engage with your business. And you don’t need to wait till your campaign runs its course to really figure out if it has worked for you or not. You can get almost real-time results, giving you strategic insights to change your campaign mid-way if need be.

5. Accessibility & Customer Relationship Building

In today’s super-competitive landscape, it is very easy to lose customers to other businesses. In such a scenario, building and retaining customer relationships plays an important role in giving your business a competitive edge. Most online marketing channels offer instant feedback and real-time insights, and some even allow the opportunity to directly interact with your target audience and understand their needs better, even after you complete a sale. Using online means, you can not only gain a better understanding of your customers, but can also engage with them regularly, and give them reasons to come back for more. You could also use digital to amplify one-to-one marketing, at scale, to offer a customized experience to each customer. Moreover, retargeting and remarketing tactics allow you to continue being on the radar of your customers and potential audiences.

6. Cost-Effectiveness

Cost is one of the key factors that influence the choice of marketing channel, especially for start-ups and small businesses. Online marketing offers many ways to drive growth and profit at a relatively low cost. In fact, there are so many tactics with minimal or no cost barriers to get started, where you can easily engage with your audiences without having to spend anything. Social media is a case in point, where with creatively engaging and regular updates, you can build a thriving community interested in what you have to offer. SEO and PPC are other tactics that can be extremely cost-effective if used well. You would thus be able to make judicious use of your marketing monies.

To sum this up, online marketing definitely offers a lot of very evident advantages over traditional channels. However, the best marketing mix for you would really be dependent on the nature of your business, product, and service as well as the preferences of your target audience. It would be best to try out different channels to ascertain what works best for you, without dismissing any medium. A lot of businesses even use a mix of online and offline, and it works well for them. But online means are a good starting point for many businesses, and as a small business owner, you should definitely explore that. If you have any questions or wish to have a discussion on how to get started on digital, feel free to reach out to us.

Telangana Govt. to extend all support for Direct Marketing Companies to setup Manufacturing in state: Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary, Govt. of Telangana

Hyderabad… Telangana Government is ready to extend all help and support to Direct Marketing Companies to set up manufacturing in the state, said Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary Industries & Commerce (I&C) and Information Technology (IT), Government of Telangana. He was speaking at the Telangana Direct Selling Sammelanam 2021 at Hyderabad. Addressing the gathering, Jayesh Ranjan said that direct selling is a 20 years old industry and faced problems in the past due to some companies that cheated customers and committed fraud. Telangana Govt came up with regulations in 2017 for direct selling companies to protect consumer interests. Registration of direct selling companies is to start soon by the centre and will be looked after by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). Registration and regulatory framework will be good for all stakeholders including customers, he said. Telangana has good industrial policy and will always encourage companies with good quality products in direct selling, he added.

Further, Jayesh Ranjan said that the state has been on the forefront in direct selling. Along with providing job and self-income generation opportunities, the Direct Selling industry in Telangana would also be expected to encourage MSMEs by increasing their sourcing from them. There is a lot of opportunity for Direct Selling to grow in Telangana and South India, he said. Along with providing job and self-income generation opportunities, the Direct Selling industry in Telangana would also be expected to encourage MSMEs by increasing their sourcing from them, said Mr. Ranjan.

The Direct Selling Industry in Telangana is all set to leverage its potential with a conducive business climate. Telangana contributed 13.15 to the share of business in the southern region with a turnover of INR 292.50 crore, corresponding to 1.74% to national sales in 2019-20, according to the Annual Survey report released by the Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA). To provide impetus to further growth, IDSA urged the state government to facilitate a registration mechanism for Direct Selling entities in the state.

Speaking at the occasion, V. Prakash Rao, Policy Advisor to Hon’ble CM of Telangana & Chairman, Telangana Water Resources Development Corporation said that the government cannot provide jobs for all. We are seeing a lot of dejected youth committing suicide due to unemployment. Youth can look to direct selling for employment and income generation. Earlier, direct selling was being seen as a second income but things are changing and people are seeing it as a primary income thing. Earlier, mostly women were taking part in it, but now the trend is changing and we are seeing men taking the lead. He expressed his happiness on seeing that 84 percent of the direct sellers were graduates.

The direct Selling industry is looking at Telangana as a preferred destination not only for generating sales but also for establishing production facilities for manufacturing high-quality goods. Leveraging the industry-friendly initiatives of the Telangana Government, various national and international Direct Selling entities are contemplating establishing their manufacturing and support facilities in the State. It is pertinent to mention that Telangana was the third state after Chhattisgarh and Sikkim to adopt the Centre’s Model Guidelines for Direct Selling Industry. The ‘Telangana Direct Selling Guidelines Order 2017,’ was notified by the Consumer Affairs, Food & Civil Supplies Department in December 2017 and provided momentum to the industry thereby resulting in robust performance. IDSA honoured Outstanding Women Direct Sellers of Telangana on the occasion.

Addressing the event, Rajat Banerji, Vice Chairman, IDSA said, “We are thankful to the government of Telangana for providing regulatory clarity to the industry and urge the state government to facilitate a registration mechanism for Direct Selling entities operating in the state.” The industry indicators suggest that Telangana has all wherewithal to take the direct selling industry to the next level in terms of growth, technology integration, employment or income generation, empowering women and MSMEs, policy reforms.

Thanking the guests and audience, Vivek Katoch, Treasurer, IDSA said, “Telangana needs to leverage its strengths. Market drivers are already there with a robust regulatory ecosystem and the use of technologies. These factors are expected to attract more direct selling entities to increase their investment in the state.”

Chetan Bhardwaj, General Manager, IDSA made a detailed presentation on various aspects of the Direct Selling industry and expressed gratitude to the Principal Secretary for giving assurance to create a conducive business climate by addressing the concerns of the industry. Telangana has about 90,000 direct sellers which comprise 44,000 women. The top three Direct Selling segments are Wellness & Nutraceuticals, Cosmetics – Personal Care, and Home Care.

The Direct Selling industry has been providing sustainable self-employment and start-up opportunities to millions of people in the country including the state of Telangana. Direct Selling has also become a significant source of income, especially for youth and women in the state. The industry also contributed significantly by way of taxes to the state exchequer.

Advance Lead-Acid Battery – a pathway for India’s renewable energy needs

New Delhi: Mr. L. Pugazhenthy, Executive director, India Lead Zinc Association said, “India consumes an estimated around 1 million tons of used lead-acid batteries for recycling economy each year and about 25-30% of this goes to the informal operators. Lead-acid batteries have the largest share; it is an energy source, affordable battery, and a dependable and reliable product. Batteries are used to store and supply electricity to electric vehicles, street lights, automotive, railway, inverters, telecom towers, and solar energy when grid power fails“.

A webinar on Advance Lead-Acid Battery was organized by India Lead Zinc Association (ILZDA) supported by Hindustan Zinc in association with the Indian Battery Manufacturers Association (IBMA) and India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA). The webinar underlined the imperative need of growing requirement of energy storage in the market.

The dignitaries during the webinar deliberated on sustainability and recyclability of lead Batteries, presented a perspective on ALAB space in green energy storage, explored advanced Lead Acid Battery ecosystem and thoughts on incentivization schemes for manufacturers and dealers. Market overview of lead-acid battery and its subsequent scope was also presented while discussing applications of advanced lead-acid battery as hybrid or standalone, Sustainable operations & technologies for lead processing.

Lead-acid batteries (lead-carbon batteries) are the first battery technology used in energy storage. It is an extensively used energy storage system due to its proven safety, performance, low cost, and excellent recycling capabilities. Compared to other technologies, a lead-acid battery is built to handle consistent load requirements in a very cost-efficient manner. As lead is 100% recyclable, the lead-acid battery is completely developed with a robust recycling capacity of more than 3 million pa in India. Lead-acid batteries can be found in a wide variety of applications, including small-scale power storage such as UPS systems, starting, lighting, and ignition power sources for automobiles, along with large, grid-scale power systems. They have a long lifetime and low costs compared to other battery types.

India is one of the highest consumers of Lead-acid batteries. Recycling of used Lead batteries is essential to ensure the need for sustainable development.

Energy conservation isn’t a new notion. Owing to concerns regarding the environmental impacts of fossil fuels and the capacity and resilience of energy grids globally, there have been some continuous efforts to fetch solutions on storing the energy. Energy storage has now become a necessity as it can address the irregularity of solar and wind power. It can also tackle the huge alterations in demand, aiding in making the energy grid more receptive and thus diminishing the need to build back up power plants.

The dignitaries present at the event were, Mr. Subhankar Chakraborty, Senior General Manager (R&D), Exide industries Ltd; Mr. Rahul Prithiani, Director, Credit Rating Information Services of India Limited (CRISIL); Dr. Alistair Davidson, Director, Consortium for Battery Innovation (CBI) and Mr. Amlan Kanti Das, Sr. Vice President-Battery Operations, R&D, Luminous Power Technology Pvt. Ltd. and Manoj Soni, VP, Business Excellence, Sustainable Operation & Technologies for Lead Processing, Hindustan Zinc.

There have been various Lead Battery implementations carried out previously across the world. Narada Power Source had partnered with energy storage operator, Upside Group, in a 16 MW frequency regulation project for the German power grid. The 25 MWh frequency regulation installation was connected to the local utility grid providing electricity to the area. A 20MWh lead-carbon battery by China Shoto Energy Storage stores and provides electricity generated by the PV panel directly into the Chinese grid. This battery system can provide 30 MW of solar power and can reach 4,000 cycles at 70% depth of discharge. The 1MW off-grid solar system, located in the mountains of Bamyan, Afghanistan, uses lead batteries curated by Crown Battery. This project provides 24-hour power to 25,000 homes, businesses, hospitals and government officers for this central mountainous region. The lead batteries are built with a capacity of 38 strings at 4,500 Ah 48 V DC.

According to India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), the Indian energy storage market is expected to grow to 70 GW by 2022. Consequently, there is a vast scope for advanced storage technologies in the new applications, along with the opportunity for existing technologies. Lead acid batteries are the most used form of battery for most rechargeable battery applications.

The lead-acid battery has many advantages for automotive and many other uses: they have a large current and surge capability, which is ideal when being used to start internal combustion engines. Advance lead-acid battery as standalone or hybrid holds a crucial role in achieving India’s future energy needs as it is the most cost-effective and recyclable that will assist in India’s transformation in the renewable energy sector.
