Shining a Light on Laser-Based Therapy

New Delhi, September 3rd, 2020: Vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy (VTP) with TOOKAD®, a therapeutic platform for solid cancers developed at the Weizmann Institute of Science, has already gained approval in Europe, Israel and Mexico for the treatment of early-stage prostate cancer and is under examination by the US Food and Drug Administration.

TOOKAD VTP works by triggering the rapid destruction of the tumor’s blood supply, temporarily turning the blood into a generator of toxic oxygen molecules called radicals and shortly afterwards causing blood vessels to collapse. But until now there was no reliable way of learning how exactly Tookad VTP accomplishes this feat. In a new study reported in Nature Biomedical Engineering, researchers in the United States together with the laboratory of Prof. Avigdor Scherz at the Weizmann Institute of Science, applied an innovative imaging technique to follow with great precision and in real time the changes in the tumor’s vasculature that eventually result in the selective destruction of a tumor, without hitting surrounding tissues.

Tookad – invented by Scherz, of the Plant and Environmental Sciences Department, and the late Prof. Yoram Salomon of Biological Regulation Department – is derived from the chlorophyll found in light-harvesting bacteria. The drug is given intravenously and stays in the patients’ blood vessels for a short while before being cleared from the body. It remains inactive until illuminated by laser light, which causes it to react with the blood’s oxygen, converting it into destructive oxygen radicals that initiate the generation of other toxic but short-lived materials; these are confined to the tumor. These locally-formed toxins attack the tumor’s blood vessels and self-propagate into the tumor’s core, killing the rest of the tissue and depriving the cancerous growth of nutrients and oxygen. Monitoring what happens to the tumor after the drug is illuminated, and in particular, how the self-propagation causes damage, was until recently impossible because available technologies lacked the temporal and spatial resolution for imaging within a living body.

Lead study author Dr. Jan Grimm of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York City – where Tookad is now being clinically explored – undertook a study of the drug’s mechanism of action using a new imaging approach: raster-scanning optoacoustic mesoscopy (RSOM). This method involves exciting tissue with pulsed laser light, which causes light-absorbing molecules within – in this case, hemoglobin – to expand. The RSOM then monitors the ultrasound waves created by this expansion. The goal was to obtain a high-resolution picture of blood vessels in the tumor and the surrounding tissue before, during and after treating mice with the drug. As Grimm wrote in a blog post, he got the idea for the study after discussing RSOM with Prof. Vasilis Ntziachristos of the Technical University of Munich, who spent a sabbatical in his lab. He then joined forces with Ntziachristos and Scherz’s lab.

“RSOM allowed the generation of outstanding images of tissue response and microvascular changes after therapy,” Grimm wrote in the blog. The images showed that soon after Tookad was administered to mice, the large blood vessels feeding their tumors became blocked, whereas smaller vessels within the tumors gradually started breaking up. The resulting bleeding introduced pulses of free oxygen molecules into the tumor’s microenvironment, causing further destruction and killing – as typically happens when an oxygen-deprived area is suddenly flooded with blood – while the tumor’s entire network of vessels ultimately collapsed. These changes culminated in the death of tumor tissue.Tumors with a poorer vessel network were less responsive to the treatment than those with a richer vessel network, underscoring the significance of turning the tumor vasculature into a temporary “death generator.” This revelation calls for new research aimed at amplifying the impact of TOOKAD VTP on tumors with a poor vascular supply.

The study’s unprecedented level of detail may help to optimize the treatment. In particular, using RSOM to monitor the state of the tumor’s blood vessels in human patients may make it possible to predict the treatment’s effectiveness, adjust it in a way that will ensure the tumor’s eradication, on the one hand, and avoid overtreatment, on the other, so as to prevent any collateral damage in the surrounding normal tissue.

Study participants included Dr. Katja Haedicke, who was initially trained in Scherz’s lab at the Weizmann Institute, Dr. Magdalena Skubal, Dr. Sheryl Roberts, Camilla Longo-Machado, Karan Nagar, Hsiao-Ting Hsu, Dr. Kwanghee Kim, Dr. Thomas Reiner and Dr. Jonathan Coleman of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; Dr. Lilach Agemy of Weizmann Institute of Science’s Plant and Environmental Sciences Department; and Profs. Murad Omar and Andrei Berezhnoi of the Technical University of Munich.

Prof. Avigdor Scherz’s research is supported by the Thompson Family Foundation; Sharon Zuckerman; Lord and Lady Sharp of Grimsdyke; the Samuil and Petr Polsky Prostate Cancer Research Fund; and the Lotte S. and Felix Bilgrey Memorial Fund.

Huawei and Industry Partners Jointly Release the 5GDN@Smart Grid White Paper

Huawei, in collaboration with other 5G Deterministic Networking Alliance (5GDNA) members such as the China Southern Power Grid, Guangdong Planning and Designing Institute, Global Energy Internet Research Institute, State Grid Qingdao Electric Supply Company, Beijing Sifang Automation, NARI
Group Corporation, China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom, recently released the 5GDN@Smart Grid White Paper: Requirements, Technologies, and Practices.

This marks the first comprehensive analysis into how 5G Deterministic Networking (5GDN) empowers diverse industries through detailed, quantitative interpretations on specific use cases. The white paper not only delves into the methodology behind accelerating the commercial use of 5G smart grids but also serves as a reference for carriers to get their network capabilities ready in advance, aiming to provide both an industry consensus on 5G smart grids as well as a baseline for the 5GDN requirements of the electric power industry according to the joint efforts of the 5GDNA members from grid corporations,
electric power terminal providers, application providers, system integrators, telecom carriers, and network equipment providers.

This white paper is featured in the “5GDN Industry White Paper” series. It quantitatively discusses the key 5GDN requirements of smart grids using specific cases, based on the 5GDN 3D model, which features differentiated capabilities, a dedicated network, and DIY operations. It not only explores the key technologies and solutions that can fulfil these key requirements but also analyzes the results of the field Proof of Concept (PoC) test, aiming to prove that digital transformation is feasible for smart grids and energy Internet industries.

2020 will be the first year to launch 5G business to business (B2B) services for commercial use in China, promoted by 3GPP R16 standards alongside the E2E networking slicing standards set by the China Communications Standards Association (CCSA), as well as the construction of the 5G Standalone (SA) network for three major carriers in China. B2B services greatly differ from business to consumer (B2C) services in that they require a deterministic network to ensure service quality in terms of latency, jitter, and packet loss rate (PLR). To achieve such a network, 5GDN leverages network slicing and Multi-access
Edge Computing (MEC) technologies on the basis of three 5G network highlights: enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC), and Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC). These highlights meet the core service availability, security, reliability, and management requirements of the electric power industry while giving rise to new, ubiquitous, flexible, and high-quality technologies at a low cost for terminal access networks of the power communication system. Such technologies will allow the electric power industry to be the first to experience the commercial use of 5G B2B services.

Professor Liu Jianming, Director of the Expert Committee on “Smart Grid Technology and Equipment” at the Industry Development Promotion Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in China, Leader of the D2-5G Work Team of the CIGRE Chinese National Committee, and member of the 5GDNA Expert Committee, stated that electric power is a fundamental industry for the national economy and people’s livelihood. He went on to add that electric power is extremely sensitive to network latency, jitter, security isolation, SLA/QoS, management, and O&M. An opportunity, therefore, arises to view the application of 5GDN in the electric power industry, in order to demonstrate how
5G can drive the digital transformation of a variety of industries.

Since its foundation in June 2019, 5GDNA has led the industry by attracting over 100 members devoted to researching smart grid technology and development. Based on 5GDN, the alliance has released multiple smart grid industry white papers and participated in a series of cross-industry collaborations. All these achievements showcase the 5GDN applications in smart grids seen in the State Grid and China Southern Power Grid, and also serve as a crucial starting point to initiate a 3GPP R18 project on 5G smart grid standards.

As a single network supporting differentiated operations, 5GDN will inevitably become a significant infrastructure to drive digital transformation across all sectors, including the electric power industry. Working together with new information technologies, such as cloud and artificial intelligence, 5GDN will be crucial to the realization of a 5G-based, digital, smart society.

Flexibility in visa rules, enhanced health precautions for students travelling to the UK for new academic year

• Health precautions introduced throughout the visa application system, including the doorstep ‘On Demand Mobile Visa’ service available for student visa customers.
• UK Visas and Immigration has introduced greater flexibility in visa rules, allowing students to apply for visas when they are able to travel to the UK, rather than at the start of their studies.
• Students completing courses online will still be eligible to apply for the Graduate Immigration Route, provided they are in the UK by 06 April 2021.

As part of its commitment to enhancing the visa system experience for students, United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has introduced flexibility in visa rules, with health precautions throughout the visa system, to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for all customers, especially incoming international students, along with its visa services partner VFS Global.

Health precautions across the visa system

In order to ensure a safe environment for customers and employees, VFS Global has established standardised protective measures to be followed across all its UK Visa Application Centres. To ensure health and safety norms are followed, the centres have implemented a mandatory online appointment system, besides checking body temperature of all customers at the entrance and maintaining physical distancing measures. Additionally, staff also carry out preventive measures such as disinfecting high-contact surfaces, body temperature screenings, use of hand sanitisers, regular hand washing, etc.

Since 06 July 2020, UK Visa Application Centres have re-opened in 11 cities in India in a phased manner: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru (Global Tech Park only), Chandigarh, Chennai, Jalandhar, Kochi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai (Mahalaxmi only), New Delhi (Shivaji Metro Stadium only), and Pune – and these centres are receiving Tier 4 applications. All of the above locations are operational subject to local lockdown regulations.

Students who begin courses online can apply for visa later

To limit the disruption caused by ongoing COVID-19 travel restrictions, UKVI is allowing incoming international students to apply for study (Tier 4) visa when they are due to travel to the UK, rather than at the start of their course. This means students who have already gained admission can begin their courses online and apply for a UK study visa when they are ready to do so.

New Graduate Immigration Route policy enhanced

The new Graduate Immigration Route that allows students who complete undergraduate or Master’s degrees to stay and work, look for work, and gain experience in the UK for up to two years (three years for PhD students) from Summer 2021, has been modified to accommodate students who start their courses overseas, online. These students will be eligible to apply for the Graduate Route, provided they are in the UK before 6 April 2021 and complete the final semester of their studies in the UK.

The Graduate Immigration Route policy was announced in September 2019 to help the UK attract and retain even more of the best international graduates from India, ensuring those graduates secure skilled jobs and contribute to the UK’s economic growth.

In 2019/20, student visas from India were 4.5 times what they were in 2016

• According to data from UKVI, almost 50,000 student visas to the UK were granted to Indian nationals in the year ending March 2020. This was a 136% increase from the year ending March 2019.
• This increase was the largest number of grants to Indian students since the year ending September 2011.
• Globally, in the year ending March 2020, almost 300,000 student visas were granted (including dependents). This is a 23% increase on the year ending March 2019 and the highest level since the year ending June 2011.

David Ratcliffe, UK Visas and Immigration Regional Director, South and South-East Asia said:

“Over the last few years, we have seen a huge increase in the number of Indian students choosing the UK’s world-class higher-education system as the destination for their studies. Despite the challenges of Coronavirus, we are confident that many thousands more will join their compatriots at university in the UK this autumn.

“For those travellers, our message is clear: your safety is our highest priority. Throughout the visa application process and your travel to the UK, we are taking measures to ensure you are safe and secure. Also, the new Graduate Route is guaranteed to open next summer – meaning those students heading to the UK this autumn will be able to apply for 2 years additional post-study leave to kick start their career in the UK.”

‘On-Demand Mobile Visa’ to apply for a visa at your doorstep

All visa customers, including students, can also avail of the optional On-Demand Mobile Visa service* that enables them to submit their visa application and enrol biometrics from the comfort and safety of their home. Once a visa decision is reached, passports can be couriered to the customer’s home.
