Innovative, Artistic, Name Badge Necklace, promoting the 12th Century Cheriyal Art Form of Telangana

Necklace especially made up of handmade beads with Cheriyal Telangana Folk Art Pendant Cum Name Badge worn by Usharani Manne, Chairperson of FICCI FLO Hyderabad at one of the Webinars was centre of attraction recently. It was the most appropriate craft jewellery worn for the occasion. And everybody’s attention was on it

The novel necklace with pendant cum name badge caught the attention of one of the speakers, Siva Devireddy, the techie-turned-entrepreneur behind GoCoop, an online marketplace for over 300 handloom cooperatives across 10 states.

As everybody started enquiring about it, Usharani, who was wearing it was too pleased about the necklace which she got it made especially for a purpose. I am pleased so much as everybody is liking this dual-purpose fashion accessory. And she gladly explained its significance. And she didn’t wear it just like any other ornament. The Craft lover to the core, Usharani, is an ardent admirer of 400 years age-old, dying Cheriyal art form. She has a penchant for painting and handcrafted Jewellery.

She knew what she wanted to do. When she became FLO Hyderabad Chairperson she got four 100 hundred of such necklaces made to be given out to the FLO Committee Members. So accordingly I got them in December last year itself.

The Cheriyal Craft Pendant cum Name badge was made by Mr. Sai Kiran, Dhanalakota of Cheriyal. The handmade fabric beads of the necklace were done in Mumbai. Both put together it became a dual-purpose fashion accessory, necklace as well as a pedant and when it is turned back a name badge. It cost Rs 1000/- each unit to get the final product made.

By doing so she wanted to achieve a long-cherished dream to support the vanishing crafts and Cheriyal Craft was dear to her heart. While achieving that objective, she aimed to present each Committee Member and speakers at the FLO functions/sessions, the priceless art form which is the pride of the state Telangana. When recipients wear it, they do so with a lot of pride as this is not just an accessory, but a piece of pure art. Cheriyal artists have adapted the art form to make many art pieces like the one being talked about here.

Cheriyal scroll painting is one of the earliest forms of audiovisual entertainment and these paintings are prepared by only Nakashi caste people in Telangana state. Hundreds of year ago, the storytelling communities used to travel through the villages of Telangana, singing and narrating stories using the scroll as their visual aid. Their work is mainly focused on the community-specific storyline. Cheriyal paintings are a unique pictorial presentation of the numerous tales

Wearing this would give our Committee Members and guests will be an immense as it serves the purpose, i.e promoting the 12th Century Art Form of Telangana and supporting the artisans and others contributing to its revival, Usharani said. For Cheriyal Artisans, it gives a platform like FLO to showcase their flair, art and craftsmanship, Usharani adds

Lastly, it serves as a name badge as well to write their name. It’s an ornament-cum-craft name badge. It is a perfect blend of Art, Glamour with utility value, explains Usharani.

Name badges allow one another address by name in the conferences or gatherings. It makes communication more open because of its design element more so when it is associated with a 400 years old art form. And the art also gets a promotion and being talked about. It serves many purposes, Usharani shares.

Organisations like Tedx, many event management companies get creative with name badging. At some events name, badges were also small notepads that could be used during the day. Some event manager made simple scrabble letters to create name badge necklaces for guests. We have also seen caricature name badges. But, this one is unique. It remains with the recipient as a good souvenir, style accessory, art piece and satisfaction of having worn an art piece which has many hundred years of history and at the same time satisfaction of promoting it, explains Usharani.

The stylish but subtle look of this necklace makes it a versatile addition to any woman’s accessories collections. Committee Members would have fallen for it. But, unfortunately, Usharani has to take over as Chairman through a virtual change of guard program in May. And since then, the ever-spreading Corona did not allow FLO to hold any physical meeting. All its activities are now happening virtually. Usharani is preserving all these necklaces for a future date to present them to committee members.

This delightful set of jewellery is an elegant way to complete any wardrobe. The stylish design is a fun complement to both casual and formal wear. The handmade beads and the construction of the necklace set ensure that each piece is unique.

Usharani and her team at FLO is also extending the much sought after support to the Cheriyal Craft. It pledged branding, product development and market linkage support to the Cheriyal Artisans through an ambitious initiative ‘Tirumani’. Towards this end as well as part of Tirumani, FLO also developed a logo, brochure, catalogue, website and social media campaign for the Tirumani initiative and unveiled it.

Besides this, FLO has also adopted Cheriyal Village as part of Adopt a Village, a national initiative, says Usharani.

Food & Mood are directly related: Luke Coutinho, a wellness expert, entrepreneur and author

Food is everything. We are what we eat. Nutrition is an over-hyped word. Though we have been eating healthy, nutritious food, yet we’re suffering from Depression and many diseases like Dementia, Alzheimer’s said Luke Coutinho, a well-known wellness expert, entrepreneur and author while addressing a Virtual Session “Food for Thought” organised by FICCI Ladies Organisation(FLO), Hyderabad Chapter.

Nourishing, well-rounded diet gives the brain the power to fight age-related brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, Dementia, he added

It was a well-attended session by over 200 attendees. Luke was in conversation with Arthi Deiva, Founder & CEO, Strive Plant-based Nutrition.

Luke dealt with various aspects of Food-Mood connection. The food has an impact the way we feel, look, think and feel. Food and Mood are directly related. Right food, sleep, exercise are important. Your sleep is very important. Exercise improves blood circulation. Food tastes different after a sound sleep. Stressed and relaxed taste food differently. Food is food. There is no magic food. The way we balance it does the magic, Luke explained.

He shared simple tips for holistic immunity as well as food to boost brain health. Our brain alone needs 600 to 800 calories, but that is not taken into account. Take, for instance, a Data Scientist, who works with numbers for 12 to 16 hours, needs 2000 calories for the brain alone. But such things are ignored. These things lead to Cognitive disorders. Cognitive disorders are a category of mental health disorders that primarily affect learning, memory, perception, and problem solving, and include amnesia, dementia, and delirium etc and others.

Luke shared some foods that boost up brainpower. Good fats are taken in right amount help the brain. But on the contrary, people are cutting them down from their diet. We need positive fats, he added quickly. Refined oils, pure ghee or home-made ghee are good. Unsalted nuts, turmeric, ginger, black chocolate etc are recommended. Coffee is good brain food. Plain black coffee two times a day is a good practice, said he.

Don’t go against natural cycles or law of nature. Eat, sleep, wake up same time, early dinners work well for the body, he informed.

On a question on menopause, he told his gathering to embrace it as it happens. It has to happen one day. Don’t make it a stress builder.

Welcoming the gathering Usharani Manne, Chairperson of FLO Hyderabad said annual health check-ups have become routine as a matter of Preventive health care. But, we totally ignore our Mental Health, because sound in mind is sound in body. It is as important as physical wellbeing or even more.

Mental Health affects health in many ways. But, still, we refuse to acknowledge it. Why it doesn’t get the due importance it deserves? she asked.

Towards this direction we kick-started a yearlong campaign in association with Roshni NGO, to spread the message of positive mental health, Usharani shared.

Through our campaign, the FLO Chairperson shared, ‘will be urging those undergoing the symptoms to reach out to those who can help – could be professionals, family members or friends…and also urging those who are around them, to extend a hand, an ear, shoulder in help. Because when we Reachout…there’s always somebody!”.

We have embarked on a ‘Say No to Suicide’ Video Challenge Usharani said. Adding more she said, It is done so , on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th. Roshni and FLO together floated the Video Challenge ‘Say No to Suicide’.

ReachOut theme song brought out by FLO Hyderabad unveiled during the webinar

Speaking on the occasion Usha Tipirneni of Roshni, an NGO In Hyderabad that helps People Struggling With Suicidal Tendencies said, the mental depression is the invisible enemy that takes our lives away. It is a complex problem which doesn’t have single treatment like a vaccine for the relief from Corona. 8 million people die annually across the globe. In India, in the year 2019 alone 1.39 lakh committed suicide. One suicide is happening every minute all over the world, she shared

Depression is treatable. Suicide is preventable. Let us together address this menace she concluded her talk.

Priya Gazdar, Secretary of FLO set the context for the conversation. Mental health is important at every stage of life. It includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It is the need of the hour. She also highlighted the importance of mindfulness eating. Wholesome approach to health is need of the hour, she said.
