Come July 20th, &TV’s Ek Mahanayak Dr B.R. Ambedkar will move into a new phase with Narayani Mahesh Varne roped in to play Ramabai Bhimrao Ambedkar. Nayi sadi, naya shehar, naya vichaar, par bhedabhau…asamaanata ka nahi chuta hai saath. Bhimrao karenge asaamanta ke khilaf sangharsh ki shuruaat, kya aap iss nyay ki ladai mein denge Bhimrao ka saath? In conversation with Narayani Mahesh Varne talking about her character of Ramabai, the preparation for the role and much more.

1. Ek Mahanayak Dr B.R. Ambedkar is your first Hindi television show; how did you bag the role?

I had to undergo a series of auditions to be selected for the role. I was on cloud nine when I was informed about my selection for the part. The show Ek Mahanayak Dr B.R. Ambedkar is one of the most popular shows on Indian television today. Getting an opportunity to play the role of Ramabai Ambedkar is a great honour and a moment of pride. I have been watching the show closely, and it is one of my and my family most favourite show. I had never imagined that I would be portraying an important role in the show one day. But I am excited and elated to be chosen to essay Ramabai’s role and look forward to a wonderful learning experience.

2. You are portraying such an important role; how did you prepare for it?

To get into the character’s skin, I am going through various reading materials and detailed briefings from the eminent researcher on the show, Hari Narke Sir. We also have a workshop conducted by him to prep each of us for the role by giving us in-depth insights and understanding into our characters. As for the look, the screen tests have been done and accordingly, it has been finalised. Other *nuances* will be fine-tuned alongside the shooting of the episodes.

3. Tell us about your character of Ramabai?

Ramabai Bhimrao Ambedkar was Babasaheb’s wife. She was quite expressive and strong-headed, with a belief system of ‘Naya Savera, Naya Jeevan’. It is her unwavering faith that helped her overcome all challenging situations. She held her head high amidst the social injustices and atrocities. Although Ramabai did not receive any formal education, it did not hinder her from standing up for the injustice against the oppressed community. Ramabai Ambedkar is one of those women who silently stood resolute in rendering support to Dr Ambedkar, which was her biggest strength. She was a symbol of humility, resilience, and compassion. There is so much to learn from Ramabai Ambedkar, which the viewers will witness in the upcoming episodes.

4. Before you started with Ek Mahanayak, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, how much did you know about Babasaheb’s life and times? What is that one learning from him you have implemented or follow in your life?

Upon signing for the show, I have been given a detailed brief by the production team and the eminent researcher on the show, Hari Narke Sir. We have read about Dr Ambedkar and know about his achievements. He was the chief architect of the Indian constitution. But we have limited information on his childhood journey and struggles. However, being a part of the show that depicts his life story will help me discover a lot about him and the revolution he brought into the community and society.

One learning that has inspired me personally from Dr Ambedkar’s journey is the importance of education. Dr Ambedkar was one of the most well-read and most educated leaders. The learning I take from him is how he used his education to transform his life and others.

5. Have you started shooting? How has been your experience so far?

Yes, we have started shooting, and the experience so far has been nothing but rewarding. Playing such a significant character has always been my dream. So, I would say that I am living my dream through this show. The entire team of the show is very warm and welcoming. I hit it off with the cast instantly.

I look forward to achieving many milestones and making memories with my new on-set family.

In &TV’s Ek Mahanayak Dr B.R. Ambedkar, viewers have witnessed how Ramji Sakpal (Jagganath Nivangune) has played a prominent role in shaping Babasaheb’s life. Ramji was the perfect example of a philosopher, guide, and great mentor to all his children. He was instrumental in inculcating the importance of education as a means to change one’s circumstances to young Bhimrao (Aayudh Bhanushali). Ramji strongly believed one must stand up for what is right even in the most challenging situation. Now, Ramji is put through a compelling circumstance, facing a dilemma and an emotional turmoil, to make a tough choice between standing and supporting his son, Bala or doing what is right, even if it means going against his son. Bala’s (Saud Mansuri) decision to elope with Rani to save her from the abusive marriage puts Ramji and his family in a disputed situation, with Maharaj and his followers pointing fingers at them. What decision will Ramji take, and how will it impact his relationship with Bala? How will a father explain right and wrong to his son?

Elaborating further on the track, Jagannath Nivangune, aka Ramji Sakpal, says, “Ramji loves all his children equally and always instilled the right teachings to them. Bhimrao is a strong-willed young boy who believes in standing by what is right. On the other hand, Bala has good intentions, but his route and actions are not always right. It leads to a constant furore between him and Ramji, making Bala believe that Ramji is not supportive of him and always sides with Bhimrao. Bala’s running away with Rani puts Ramji into a tough spot, leading him to take a stand in support of Bhimrao, resulting in alienating him further from Bala. Kaise karegein, Ramji is chunati ka saamna? How will he be able to bring Bala back on track?”

In the recent episodes of &TV’s Ek Mahanayak Dr B.R Ambedkar, the audience witnessed the demise of Bhimabai (Neha Joshi) which led to an emotional turmoil for Bhimrao’s family. While Ramji (Jagannath Nivangune) started taking on additional responsibilities as a single father to his children, Meera Bai (Falguni Dave) wanted him to remarry. Although Ram Ji was totally averse to the idea of a second marriage, he realised that it would ensure that his family has a strong foundation as well as give a new lease of life to a widowed lady; and he agrees to marry Jijabai, a widowed lady from Mumbai. Soon, Sneha Mangal will be making an entry in the show to portray the character of Jijabai. Speaking about Jijabai’s character, Sneha Mangal shares, “I am delighted to portray the role of Jijabai in Ek Mahanayak Dr B.R. Ambedkar. Jijabai was the second wife of Ramji Sakpal. She was a widow and lived with her father in Mumbai. After marriage, they moved to Goregaon which was closer to Ram Ji’s workplace, and she was his companion until his death. With the entry of Jijabai, there will be a new phase in both Ramji’s and Bhimrao’s life, and how this will have an impact on the family will be unveiled in the forthcoming episodes.”

The entire cast and crew celebrated this milestone with a cake cutting on the sets and, congratulated each other for the success and appreciation the show has received from its viewers. Jagannath Nivangune essaying Ramji Sakpal and Neha Joshi playing Bhimabai thank the audience as they share fond memories related to their journey. Jagannath Nivangune shares, “We all have read about Babasaheb Ambedkar either through books or through the internet. But what I have learnt through this show is much beyond that. It has been a wonderful journey portraying Ramji Sakpal and getting to closely watch the struggles that Babasaheb Ambedkar underwent, which made him the greatest leader of all times. The teachings and knowledge he imparted stay relevant to the people even today.” He further adds, “The show has some exciting plots lined up for 2021 starting with an incident which will deeply impact young Bhimrao and change his outlook towards life.”Neha Joshi shares, “Indeed, it is a beautiful journey. When I was approached to play the role of Bhimabai, initially I was apprehensive, but with time, I realised it is the strongest role any woman can play. The emotions and feelings towards making the relationship work with the team of &TV’s Ek Mahanayak Dr B. R. Ambedkar grew stronger and fonder with each passing day.” She further added, “Babasaheb was ahead of his time, and his philosophies and ideologies have touched each one of us in different ways. Dr Ambedkar was one of the greatest leaders of our times. His achievements are unmatched, and his contribution to society has been immense. However, his journey was not easy and filled with many challenges. But there were two people whose support and encouragement played a significant role in shaping Babasaheb’s life and future. They were his father, Ramji Sakpal and Guruji, Krishna Keshav Ambedkar. The celebrations for Teachers’ day would be incomplete without making a special mention of these two exemplary teachers. Ramji Sakpal, Babasaheb’s father, always stood by him as the pillar of strength. He was the perfect example of a guide, philosopher, and a great mentor. While his Guruji, Krishna Keshav Ambedkar gave Babasaheb his surname, ‘Ambedkar’ when Babasaheb faced discrimination in school. In &TV’s Ek Mahanayak Dr B. R. Ambedkar, viewers will see Bhimrao getting an admission into a new school, courtesy his Guruji. Bhimrao is filled with joy, and as a gesture of respect towards his Guruji, he touches the imprints of his feet formed in mud, and says, “Aap se mile mujhe pehchaan, mann mein mere Bhagwan se bardkar hai aapka staan.”

Jagannath Nivangune who essays the role of Ramji Sakpal in &TV’s Ek Mahanayak Dr B. R. Babasaheb was fortunate to have not one but two such gurus – his school teacher Krishna Keshav Ambedkar and his father, Ramji Sakpal. While his teacher guided Babasaheb towards his ultimate career path, his father stood by him through challenging times and inspired him to face these with courage and intellect. Following their guidance, Dr B. R. Ambedkar began a historical journey of making a mark for himself and becoming the drafter of the Indian constitution. We should thank these inspiring teachers behind the inspiring leader, who to taught him various life lessons and nurtured him into becoming the inspiring leaders of our times.”
