Back pain should not be dismissed as normal and corrective measures are paramount

Gurgaon: Spinal stenosis is a disorder caused by narrowing of the spinal canal. This happens due to the degeneration of both the facet joints and the intervertebral discs. In this condition, bone spurs (also called osteophytes) can grow into the spinal canal. There is a need to raise awareness on such spinal problems and the importance of recognizing symptoms such as a shooting back pain in a timely manner.

Spine-related changes are not just an outcome of age but also ergonomic issues with our lifestyle. This has exacerbated during the pandemic since many people are working from home. Wrong posture can put pressure on the nerves and lead to back and/or leg pain, possibly leading to complications.

Speaking about this, Dr Sumit Sinha, Neurosurgeon, Paras Hospital, Gurgaon, said, “People are spending more time sitting than ever before due to the pandemic and work from home situation. Most use dining room chairs or other household furniture which are ergonomically unsuitable for work. Core strengthening exercises are important for spine health and provide better protection from lumbar stress fractures or other serious back injuries. The contraction of core muscles stabilizes the spine, pelvis and shoulder girdle, all of which are important for people in their daily activities and not just sports of exercise. This is why spinal health should be a key area of focus for everyone rather than being dismissed off as a normal back pain.”

Adding further, Dr Sinha, said, “With a minimally invasive procedure, surgeons can achieve similar results and objectives of traditional surgery by using imaging systems, tiny cameras, and skin incisions about the size of a thumbnail. Surgeons are able to work precisely in smaller surgical fields with less tissue splitting. This type of procedure can offer patients physical and aesthetic advantages.

Some of the treatment options for spinal stenosis include MIS spine surgery, spinal deformity correction, and spinal fusion. The goal of spinal fusion is to restore stability to the spine. During the procedure, the surgeon removes the disc between the vertebrae in order to stabilize the spine. The surgeon will insert material between the vertebrae which will promote the two vertebral bodies to “fuse” into one bone structure. An evolving trend in spinal surgery is minimally invasive surgery. This technique makes the use of smaller incisions to do traditional surgeries through new approaches. The surgeon is aided in this procedure by intra- operative nerve monitoring, navigation, and powered tools.

Paras Hospital Gurugram organises a health session to celebrate Father’s Day, International Yoga Day

Gurugram: When health and well-being have once again become the prime point in people’s lives, leading multi-specialty hospital Paras Hospital Gurugram today conducted a digital health session on the occasion of the Father’s Day and International Day of Yoga. The hour long-conference began with a virtual yoga session by instructor Mr. Lalit Goyal followed by an interactive meet and greet with Dr. Amit Bhushan Sharma, Associate Director & Unit Head Cardiology, Paras Hospital.

The virtual sessions covered simple yoga asanas including Tadasana, Trikonasana, Vakasana, and Bhujangasanato among others under the guidance of Mr. Goyal. It was attended by 250 people across India. Dr. Sharma highlighted how practicing yoga can reduce the impact of stress responses, and can be helpful for both anxiety and mild depression. By reducing the degree of perceived stress and anxiety, yoga modulates the body’s stress response systems. This in turn reduces physiological arousal by lowering the heart rate, blood pressure, and improving respiration. Evidence also suggests that practicing yoga can increase heart rate variability, which is a key indicator of the body’s ability to respond to stress flexibly.

“As we have been spending time mostly at home, it’s pivotal that we should do certain indoor exercises that will be beneficial for our physical and mental health. This International Yoga Day, we are organizing a digital yoga session. The one-hour session had 250 audiences across India. It’s pivotal that we at least do half an hour of yoga every day particularly in such extraordinary times when there is so much pressure about health, profession, and future. The calming exercise of yoga is good for heart health because there is an upsurge in heart diseases because of the surmounting stress in people’s lives. One of yoga’s clearest benefits to the heart is its ability to relax the body and mind. Emotional stress can cause a cascade of physical effects, including the release of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which narrow your arteries and increase blood pressure. The deep breathing and mental focus of yoga can offset this stress. Worry and depression commonly follow a cardiac event, such as a heart attack, bypass surgery, or diagnosis of heart disease. As part of an overall treatment plan, yoga can help you manage this stress,” said Dr. Amit Bhushan Sharma, Associate Director & Unit Head Cardiology, Paras Hospital, Gurugram.

Many viewers also asked questions pertaining to heart care during the lockdown. Dr. Sharma suggested that one should not ignore cardiovascular health and should visit the hospital immediately as all the hospitals are taking extra precautions and maintaining all the safety standards suggested by health bodies. He suggested timely interventions help to cure many ailments. The session was initiated by the Can-Winn foundation In association with Paras Hospitals, Gurugram.
