Vedanta Nand Ghar bags the “CSR Shining Star Award”

Mumbai, Maharashtra: Vedanta Limited has been conferred with the “CSR Shining Star Award” under the category of Child Development for Nand Ghar, Vedanta Group’s flagship corporate social responsibility project. The recognition was given by Honorable Governor of Maharashtra, Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari in an award ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan, Mumbai on 20th February 2021.

The award recognizes Vedanta’s efforts towards the holistic development and growth of children contributing towards building a stronger and healthier nation.

Speaking on receiving the award, Vedanta Director, Ms. Priya Agarwal said: “I am honored as well as humbled to receive the award for our Nand Ghars that are transforming the lives of rural women and children across the country. We are committed to fulfilling Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of eradicating child malnutrition, providing education and healthcare, and empowering rural women through skill development, and Nand Ghar will be the change agent for the same. I have no doubt in my mind that Nand Ghar will continue to create a better tomorrow for the children and their mothers at the grassroots level.”

The Nand Ghar journey began in 2015 with a vision to transform the lives of 8.5 crore children and 2 crore women across 13.7 lakh anganwadis. A dream project of Vedanta Chairman, Shri Anil Agarwal, Nand Ghar is a network of model anganwadis where the thrust is on inclusive development of children, women and local communities. The Nand Ghars are set up in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Women & Child Development.

With more than 2000 centres, the Nand Ghar project is now spread across 10 states – Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Punjab, Assam, Himanchal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The project aims to touch the lives of 4 million community members while directly impacting around 2 lakh children and 1.8 lakh women on an annual basis.

Nand Ghars are equipped with solar panels to ensure 24 x 7 electricity, water purifiers, clean toilets and smart television sets, and have become a model resource centre for the local communities. Pre-school education is provided to children in the age group of 3-6 years. Nutritious meals and take-home rations are being provided for children, pregnant and lactating women. Primary healthcare services are rendered through mobile health vans and women are empowered through skilling, credit linkage and enterprise development.

Vedanta Chairman Mr. Anil Agarwal Ranked Among India’s Top Philanthropists

Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal has been ranked among the top philanthropists in the country, according to the EdelGiveHurun India Philanthropy List 2020.

The Hurun Report says that Mr Agarwal’s contribution this year has risen by 90 per cent compared to the previous year and has ranked him among the top five philanthropists in India.

The Hurun report says that Vedanta has contributed more than the government-mandated 2 per cent towards corporate social responsibility. The report includes cash and cash equivalents pledged with legally binding commitments for the twelve months from 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020 and the latest available CSR data filed with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

Vedanta has been at the forefront of the fight against Covid-19 and contributed Rs 101 crore to the PM-CARES Fund. The company also created a special corpus of Rs 100 crore for Covid-related initiatives to support daily wage earners and local communities.

In line with his philosophy of Giving Back, Mr Agarwal has pledged 75 per cent of his wealth for social good. He has created the philanthropic arm of the Group – The Vedanta Foundation – with a deep-seated belief that businesses must give back to society and help people prosper.

“The foundation works towards education and computer literacy, vocational training, women & child empowerment, and community welfare,” the Hurun report has said.

Under the aegis of Vedanta Cares, Mr. Agarwal has created the Nand Ghar – a network of model Anganwadi which are focused on eradicating child malnutrition, providing education, healthcare, and empowering women. Vedanta has rolled out more than 1700 Nand Ghars in India, enhancing the lives of numerous women and children at the grass-root level. The Group CSR initiative comprises of seven key verticals – Education, Healthcare, Water and Sanitation, Sustainable Livelihood, Skilling, Sports & Culture and Employee Volunteering.

Vedanta Foundation, a philanthropic initiative of Vedanta Group is focused on skill development and vocational training programmes for the underprivileged to make them employable. A key healthcare speciality CSR project is the Balco Medical Center, a 200-bed state-of-the-art Cancer care hospital located in New Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The company supports grassroots level sports through their Football academies in Goa and Udaipur.
