Tech Trends that will Rule the Gaming Industry in 2021

Gaming has been a predominant trend in the West, but with the rise of its popularity amongst the youth, the gaming fever caught on in India as well. Further, gaming has emerged as a business sector that is proving to be immensely lucrative. The e-gaming industry is fast-paced and extremely diverse. Avid gamers constantly crave high-quality gaming experience as they aren’t satisfied with the existing technologies. To retain good players and encourage others to take it up, software developers and game creators need to keep re-inventing and executing new technologies.

As the world was gripped by the Covid-19 outbreak, people ended up being cooped up at home with a lot of time to kill. As a result, millennials resorted to playing online games, bringing the gaming world to life while the physical sporting world remained uneventful. The incredible growth of online gaming is giving rise to certain tech trends which will be ruling the roost in 2021.

Reports project that the gaming industry is poised to grow at a CAGR of 40% by 2022, scaling the total market size to US$2.8 billion. This growth will majorly be driven by mobile gaming as nearly 85% of online gaming takes place on smartphones in India. The research encapsulates the role played by edge computing market, adoption of AI and IoT, rise of AR/VR technologies and growth of mobility and other application services.

Sharing his views on the current scenario in the gaming industry, Yash Pariani, CEO and Founder, Indian Gaming League, India’s most popular competitive gaming and eSports league that hosts gaming tournaments online, says, “Of the several recreational options, those that required physical presence or involved larger gatherings became inoperational due to the pandemic. Therefore, options such as live concerts, movie theatres and watching sports live in stadiums – all got excluded from the set of possible choices. And the options that could be consumed within the confines of our homes did not allow the creation of fresh content. This is where gaming could provide a constructive outlet to people and supported creation and consumption in the ‘new normal’, thus gaining traction compared to other entertainment options.”

The roll-out of 5G will prove to be a revolutionary advancement for the gaming industry. It will mean faster download speeds, improved streaming capabilities, and immersive real-time gaming experiences. Without having to install any new infrastructure, online gaming with the help of 5G will enable gamers to bolster their experience. 5G network will also nurture virtualization and foster network slices, with every slice designated for a particular purpose.

The onset of 5G will also provide the necessary boost for making mobile gaming accessible to one and all. Also, Gaming-as-Services (GaaS) model will be another rising trend that is touted to have the potential to completely transform the gaming industry. This service will enable gamers to play online games without any drop in the overall quality of the games irrespective of the device on which it is being played.

Another Indian esports start-up platform, The Esports Club has been built with the sole aim of powering esports experiences while helping grassroots community development in India and other South Asian Countries. Ishaan Arya, Co-Founder, The Esports Club, says, “The emerging trends in esports and gaming reflect precisely what audiences want in terms of participation opportunities and the kind of content they want more of. Gaming in India continues to be driven largely by mobile gaming of course; However, smartphones and easy connectivity have also driven up gaming content consumption reflected in online engagement and significant growth in esports viewership. We are also starting to see an increase in the crossover between non-gaming personalities like comedians, athletes, actors, etc and esports; with media and personalities introducing newer audiences to the exciting world of competitive video games.”

Adding to the views, Mr. Varun Mahna, Founder & CEO, Dangal Gamesa leading online gaming appsaid, “The gaming world has pushed its limits to another level with each passing day. It is as easy as it sounds. In a fraction of minutes, new opportunities are created, and milestones are achieved to meet the expectations of players with the use of cutting-edge technologies. The technology trends that are going to last this year and the coming years are online transactions and payments becoming super easy, online gaming is enabling the players to enjoy games with the HD graphic experience, the latest advancements like facial and voice recognition that can adapt to the emotions of the player and the emergence of cloud gaming

Online Gaming Broadening the Way to Career Opportunities

According to a recent report, India has roughly 300 million online players as of the fiscal year of 2019. That number is expected to grow up to 440 million players by 2022. Overall, India ranked the highest in growth in online game downloads on app stores, with a growth rate of 165 per cent between 2016 and 2018.

The launch of economical 4G services coupled with the availability of low-cost Smartphones in recent years has revealed a new phase of growth for online gaming in India. The trend has not just provided online gamers with an opportunity to choose amidst the different variety of games but also opened fresh career options. A significant shift in career choices is also being witnessed in India with the millennials adopting careers on the digital grid as a means to earn some quick money.

Mr. Varun Mahna, CEO & Founder, PokerDangal, an online poker playing platform, shared his views on the growing career avenues in online gaming, saying, “One can make a career out of online gaming. There is no shortage of inspirations in India, who switched to poker as a professional career and are making a luxury living out of it.

A few widely known examples are, ‘Saurabh Arora’ who forged a bankroll worth INR 10 Million, ‘Anant’ who has now successfully built a bankroll of INR 50 Million. You will find many more living examples out there, who have chosen poker as their mainstream career. Plus, I would also like to throw some light on this fact, that playing mind stimulation sport like Poker, actually helps in busting some stress, hence you can derive some leisure time as well by playing it.”

Mr. Sudhir Kamath, CEO & Co-Founder, 9stacks, another poker platform, also shares “Poker can be played both professionally and recreationally. A person can make enough money from online poker, similar to other careers. However, this requires a significant amount of skills, discipline, and dedication, so the percentage of such players will always be small. This is also a relatively new career option in India, and the current number of professional poker players would be not more than a thousand or so.”

When asked from Mr. Amit Purohit, Founder, Fantasy Akhada, a fantasy gaming platform, on how much money on an average can a user earn every month in online gaming, he said, “This completely depends on the user and his / her skill of selecting a good team and picking an appropriate contest before the match. Our users have had close to 50 Million winnings so far on the platform in the last 9 months. From time spent a point of view, I would say if a user plays 3-4 matches on a day on a platform, his average time spent per game is 15-20 minutes per platform.”

On the same question when asked from Mr. Yash Pariani, CEO & Founder, Indian Gaming League (IGL), he said, “Participating in tournaments on IGL has a number of benefits. IGL host daily paid as well as free to enter tournaments and Battle Royale, it is contested by all the top clans and professional gamers in India. IGL is a community in itself and we have our personal groups on various social media where all the new gamers and upcoming professionals get to directly interact with current top gamers and can learn the tricks of the trade on how they can begin their professional journey.”

He further adds “Current Esports players internationally can rake in more than $2 million for winning an international tournament, and many of them earn steady salaries while competing for corporate-sponsored teams. Players between the ages of 21 and 25 have won more money than all other ages combined.”

Similarly, when asked by Mr. Ishaan Arya, Co-Founder & Head of Business Development, The Esports Club on how is he promoting gaming in India, he said, “Our focus is to create a solid Esports base in India for players across various games. To develop as an esports market India needs to create more long term, regular and recurring opportunities for players and teams. We’re trying to create and introduce tournaments and IPs that give players and teams that assurance and creates that competitive base for aspiring Esports athletes.”

Tech-Lifestyle and Online Gaming brands are welcoming Government’s move to ban Chinese apps in the Country

The Indian Government banned 59 Chinese apps as a response to China’s incursions into Indian Territory. Popular apps including ByteDance’s video-sharing app TikTok, Alibaba’s UC Browser and Xiaomi’s Mi Community app were restricted access to the huge 500 million internet consumer base in the country.

The move was followed by another ban that was imposed in the recent weeks on about 47 apps which mostly contained clones, or simply different versions, of the already banned apps. Now recently, the government has added 15 Chinese apps to the list of banned apps. These apps include photo editor AirBrush, video tool MeiPai and camera editor BoXxCAM among others. The Mi Browser Pro that came inbuilt with Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones has also been added in the list of apps that were banned in their latest move.

On this recent development by the Indian Government Mr Ravi Mittal, Founder of the popular dating app QuackQuack that recently crossed 10 million Indian users commented “Suspension of Chinese apps which are a security risk to our country is a welcome move. There are 100s of more Chinese apps on the Play Store which are cannibalizing the Indian market and need to go. These include a lot of Chinese duplicates and low-quality apps as well. However, this is a welcome start.

The Indian start-up ecosystem has some very good apps and can easily fill the void. We have to reduce dependency on Chinese apps and it is encouraging that we as Indians are going all out to support apps developed in India”

Mr. Durga Dash, Co-founder & CEO of a booming fashion & lifestyle brand in the country- Styched also shared his views on the move taken by the Indian Government “The ban on Chinese apps in the Indian consumer market has created a void – from a supply viewpoint at least. While consumers were used to apps like TikTok and Shein, their appetite to consume products and services online has only increased post-pandemic; and this is what Indian cos need to truly leverage. The void should be studied from a user experience viewpoint and be highly customer-oriented.

From a fashion viewpoint, the void has only grown larger and newer models like on-demand production are needed. I believe Styched is in a unique position to cater to the needs of fashion millennials. With thousands of curated designs for both womenswear and menswear, largest fan merchandising and new age collections, Styched is already becoming a great option in filling up the fashion void for customers”

Showing his dedicated support to the government’s action Mr. Varun Mahna, CEO & Founder of PokerDangal, an online gaming platform said “A reiterate step like this in favour of our Nation’s sovereignty is a masterstroke I must say, India again won its spurs as one of the independent nations. We can finally say now that India is moving quickly towards being a developed nation, and brave steps like these, show how strong we are on the abstraction of ‘MAKE IN INDIA.’ Like I said earlier, abolishing Chinese applications will not only preserve our nation’s security and youth development but will also allow capable Indian growing platforms like ours’ to come forward and show their true potential.

Honestly, we are obliged to our government and believe that Indians will now prioritize native platforms over foreign ones, which will enable us to showcase our creativity, talent, and strong motives to serve the society in a better way. I can’t say about others, but PokerDangal and our entire team appreciates the ban of Chinese apps and is inclined to contribute our pleasing services more delightfully in respect of the progressing movement ‘MAKE IN INDIA’”.
