Mumbai, June 24, 2024: Aligned with the National Educational Policy, IIM Sambalpur conducted ‘Nurturing Future Leadership Programme’ (NFLP) under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP). The five-day residential programme was designed to equip faculty members from various universities with technical, managerial, and interpersonal dexterities for effective leadership in both administrative and academic roles within higher education institutions (HEIs). It also aims to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of effective leadership, identify challenges, encourage strategic thinking for managing organizations, and enhance cross-functional coordination, conflict resolution & consensus-building skills.
The inaugural ceremony commenced with an introductory session on “Strategic Leadership for Academic Governance & 21st Century Learning” led by Prof. Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director, IIM Sambalpur. During his address, Prof. Jaiswal took the example of Michael Porter, a renowned business theorist, who emphasizes the importance of strategy in business and said, “Many successful companies, particularly in China and Japan, focus on operational efficiency rather than strategic innovation. For Indian higher education, adopting a strategic approach is crucial for global competitiveness.” The Director, IIM Sambalpur further said, “The emphasis was on improving quality and international rankings through enhanced research, innovation, and attracting global talent.”
This was followed by Prof. Padmavathy Dhillon’s session on “Making Classroom Psychologically Safe Adaptive For Happy Classroom”. The day concluded with a profound session on “Understanding Institute Finance and Budget-Making and Financial Management” by Prof. Diwahar Sunder Nadar.
The second day began with the informative session on “Managing Performance Dynamics & Leadership” by Prof. Atri Sengupta, tracked by the session on “Effective Communication for Academic Leaders” and “Management Planning, Crafting, and Publishing High-Quality Research Papers” by Prof. Shilpi Kalwani and Prof. Saumya Ranjan Sahoo, respectively.
On the third day, Prof. Soumya G. Deb threw light on institutional challenges with a session on “Accreditation & Challenges of the Institution”, which was followed by an informative session on “Ranking & Improving The Performances of the Institutes” by Prof. RK Padhy and “Fostering Academic Excellence Through Critical & Designing Things” by Prof. Poonam Kumar.
The fourth day guided enlightened participants with an insightful session on “Managing change in Academic Institutions” by Prof. Shikha Bhardwaj, followed by Prof. Padmavathy Dhillon’s session on “Team Management in Academic Institution” and Prof. Shilpi’s session on “Managing Self, Time, and Stress.”
The final day of the programme focused on “Engaging Stakeholders (Students/Community/Alumni)” presented by Prof. Sumita Sindhi. Prof. Siddharth Majhi then led a session on “Building Institute Brands in the Digital Era”. The training concluded with a session on “Designing/Preparing Delivering Research & Consultancy Projects”, followed by project presentations evaluated by Prof. Poonam Kumar and Prof. RK Padhy.

Mumbai: Continuing its streak of a high gender diversity, the handcrafted IIM Sambalpur, one of the most promising and dynamic management institutions among the new generation IIMs of the country, welcomed their MBA Class 2021-23 through an august inauguration programme. The virtual session was graced by distinguished and esteemed guests which included Chief Guest, Dr Saurabh Garg, IAS Chief Executive Officer, UIDAI and Keynote Speaker, Mr Lalit Gupta, Co-founder, Edduus, Leadership Coach and ZIIL Malaysia. The induction programme also witnessed a welcome address by Prof Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director, IIM Sambalpur. The program began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by an address by Prof. Poonam Kumar, Chairperson Admissions. The MBA Program was introduced to the other faculty members, staff, students and media by Prof. Merlin Nandy, Chairperson, PGP. The 7th MBA batch with its strength of 169 students is a vibrant combination of gender and academic diversity.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director, IIM Sambalpur, said, “The Vision of IIM Sambalpur is to “Nurture Responsible Leaders with Entrepreneurial Mind Set”, and we operate around our 3 Core Values: INNOVATION, INCLUSIVENESS & INTEGRITY. As an evidence to our Inclusiveness Value propositions, we became the first IIM in 2019 MBA admission with highest gender inclusive diversity of 49% female students in MBA, 44% in 2020 and 48% female in 2021. There is a huge amount of disruption happening around us and COVID has only accelerated those changes. Technology makes things more efficient. Today we are all connected with each other, and these uber-technologies are disrupting traditional business models faster than ever before. These changes are revolutionary. Leaders have high level of emotional integrity that is about being brutally honest in knowing what exactly they want for themselves. We have to figure out how to take advantage of these opportunities and possibilities and not get bogged down by the challenges. This is what will create the difference between living and leading. Chief Guest, Dr Saurabh Garg, IAS Chief Executive Officer, UIDAI, commented, “Companies that existed 100 years ago, don’t exist anymore and this is normal. People can make educated guesses on what the future holds but they remain guesses and that is the exciting thing about the future knowing that there will be changes which one could have never imagined a few years back. Owing to the pandemic, IIM Sambalpur has been conducting online classes which is likely to continue this year as well. Introduction of Flipped classrooms and thereby following a blended pedagogy, allowed IIM Sambalpur to transition quickly and efficiently in the online mode, once the pandemic hit. The institute’s classrooms are equipped with SMART Boards, where students can login and access notes, presentations, curriculum schedules and even test their own knowledge through built-in quizzes. New Delhi: Eleven months after the pandemic induced lockdown had forced all educational institutions across the country to shut down their campuses and the education system shifting to a completely digital platform, institutes have slowly started to reopen their campuses. One of the most promising and dynamic management institutions among the new generation IIMs of the country, IIM Sambalpur, the handcrafted IIM, has also reopened its campus for students, adhering to directions of the Central Government, State Government, District Authorities, and statutory health regulatory bodies. The Institute is also adopting a set of safety and hygiene guidelines which will be updated from time to time as issued by the Government authorities. Being a first-mover among IIMs, to conceive the concept of flipped classroom mode of learning, which enabled a smooth transition from offline to online classes including examinations and admission processes, IIM Sambalpur truly stands for holistic pedagogy. The first year and second year students of MBA have started arriving at the campus in batches. Students who are facing internet and infrastructure issues at home are given priority to come to the campus. The classes will, however, be held in online mode for the time being.
Speaking on reopening the campus, Prof Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director, IIM Sambalpur, said, “We will be rebooting the campus in stages and students will be returning in a phased manner. A strict set of mandatory guidelines, as set by Government authorities has been issued to all students, faculty and staff. We will also be collecting the students’ travel/location details for 14 days before entering the campus. Students must produce a COVID 19 Negative Certificate which is not older than 3 days as on their date of arrival. They will also have to undergo tests at the end of their quarantine period which the Institute will arrange with the help of the District Administration. As numbers around the country are going down and the vaccination drive starting, it is essential for life to continue in the new normal. While physical distancing and remote learning were a necessity, students did feel a sense of isolation. Coming back to campus and meeting their friends and teachers, will create a positive impact on their mental health as well. Our students also realize the need to normalize the situation and are enthusiastic about their arrival to campus, some of them for the first time. However, the pandemic is far from over and hence stringent SOP must be followed to resume near-normal activities. Self-discipline is the key to responsible COVID 19 behaviour.”
Each student will have to self-quarantine themselves for 14 days from the date of arrival at the campus in separate rooms. Each student must have the Aarogya Setu app active on their smartphones. Wearing masks outside their hostel rooms, thermal scanning of body temperature upon entering the campus, maintaining social distancing in common spaces, sanitizing hands, and following all other basic norms is mandatory. Students are not allowed to leave the hostel premises other than medical emergencies. Students who must leave campus will have to quarantine themselves again. The dining hall will also have meal timings for students and staff in batches. Thorough disinfection and cleaning of all surfaces will be maintained by the institute. Medical assistance like routine health check-ups, monitoring of students, dealing with emergencies will be provided during the quarantine. Two fully ready rooms with beds, oxygen cylinders, and other essential facilities for combating COVID 19 mild to moderate symptoms will be available in a separate building on the campus. A Medical officer/Doctor will also visit the hostel regularly.
Although physically present at the campus, students will continue to attend classes in the online mode. The Institute will take the decision of resuming physical classes depending on the circumstances and government guidelines. IIM Sambalpur has been conducting online classes with the help of several digital tools and processes to facilitate effective learning for its students. Taking forth the concept of Flipped classrooms, Learning Management Software like Moodle is being utilized, where students and faculty members interact regularly through Video Conferencing. Furthermore, the institute has smart classrooms equipped with SMART Boards, where students can log-in and access notes, presentations, and curriculum schedules. All examinations of IIM Sambalpur are conducted using online proctoring systems for descriptive exams or using LMS for the quiz and multiple-choice exams.

“2020 has been an unforgiving year and among the many industries severely affected by the pandemic, the education sector and learning is one of them. The pillars of primary as well as higher education was shaken abruptly resulting in learning losses particularly to those who lack digital access. The pandemic has once again underscored the digital divide that exists in this country. A lot of schools especially run by government in rural belts, small towns got badly impacted due to the yawning digital divide. Government schools where 80-90% of Indian students’ study are some of the biggest sufferers as students do not have the paraphernalia to attend online classes. Therefore, the first and foremost issue that needs to be addressed in this upcoming Budget is allocation of funds to develop digital infrastructure across the country, especially rural India, to bridge the gap between rural and urban and there is no inequality. Government must evaluate the situation on ground and spend on assets for long term that includes smart classroom, Internet connection and upskilling of teachers in line with NEP 2020. Teachers also need to adapt to the changing pedagogy and restructure their teaching methodologies. Meticulous budgetary guidelines need to be set for the implementation NEP 2020 as many things need to be restructured for its execution. While NEP 2020 focuses on raising the quality of education however upgradation of infrastructure of public higher education and professional institutions is key to achieving the desired outcomes. The Union budget 2021 should give guidelines on the ‘NEP implementation plan’ and further strengthen the focus and investment in Edu-tech to enhance experiential and immersive learning and reinforce the skill development process at par with the global education standards. One of the main highlights of NEP was turning technical institutes multi-disciplinary and to make higher education more flexible which will require development of infrastructures, in terms of, number of classrooms, number of teachers, new campuses, bringing in foreign faculty and more. The current public expenditure on education in India has been around 4.4% of GDP. This needs to be significantly increased to 6-7% of GDP with a combined contribution of Centre and State governments. Similarly, if we want to give due importance to research, the research and innovation investment, which currently stands at about 0.8% of GDP needs to be enhanced to at least 2% of GDP. FDI in education is another important aspect the forthcoming budget needs to address. To take advantage of the technological advancements to the fullest, FDI is essential. In his addressal, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, said, “With the laying of the foundation stone of IIM Sambalpur, we also lay the foundation of a new era for the youth of the country. I am sure that IIM Sambalpur will make Odisha the hub of management education. This decade will be devoted to the development of new Multinational corporations (MNCs) in India. Despite of COVID, India has given a number of unicorns this year. These are largely growing in tier 2 and tier 3 cities. Today’s startups are tomorrow’s MNCs. These startups need able managers and those passing out of this institution will lead the way.”
He further added, “With its core values of Integrity, Innovation and Inclusion, IIM Sambalpur will show the country the power of management education. it is the responsibility of the students at the institute to bring global recognition to ‘Brand India’ and encourage development and focus on inclusion of all. The permanent campus of Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur is to be developed in an area of land measuring approximately about 200 Acres at Basantapur village near Goshala near Sambalpur City. In Phase- I, 60,280 sqm approx. built-up area under various buildings of the Project shall be constructed.
The most striking feature of the campus will be the incorporation of regional art that creates a symbiotic relationship with the architecture. Odisha’s traditional IKAT—a patterned textile-dyeing technique—is mapped onto the brick facade with remarkable elegance, in colors similar to the soils of the state.
The 4-star GRIHA rated sustainable campus will follow energy efficient and ecologically sensitive principles of development. Domestic water consumption will be reduced by using Dual Flushing Cisterns, less water consuming urinals, showers, faucets, etc. The campus will be 100% day lit in regularly occupied living areas and fresh air ventilated interior spaces. Treated water from STP will be used for irrigation and flushing. Use of LED lighting and ECBC complied energy efficient electric appliances like DG Sets, transformer, lifts, pumps, motors etc. will help in considerably reduced electricity consumption.

IIM Sambalpur has received generous support from Govt. of Odisha in the form of 200 acres of land being provided by them for the construction of proposed campus. The Ministry of Education has extended continued administrative support and financial grant to the tune of Rs. 401.97 crores for the realization of this project. The project is time bound to be completed by April 2022. The proposed campus will be a fully equipped state-of-art structure with energy efficient green features as per GRIHA standards. The new and permanent campus of the institute will have a green campus with maximum usage of renewable energy. The heritage and art of Odisha will also reflect in the building design. IIM Sambalpur had assigned NBCC (India) Ltd., A Govt. of India under the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, for providing the “Project Management Consultancy” services.
