Infertility 101: Everything You Should Know

Is infertility a disease? In contrast to other diseases, there is no linear progression of this condition and there is no discrimination based on demographic or cultural differences. There are many potential causes that impact men and women and results in infertility. On an average, ⅛ of the population can be affected by infertility. Fertility, the potential to achieve a pregnancy typically declines with aging for both men and women. Egg quality, ovulation, the uterine lining the reproductive environment overall in women, and sperm quality, motility, and count can all be greatly impacted by age and by lifestyle changes.

Amongst all the potential causes of infertility for both among males and females, the following are the most crucial ones:

A. Amongst males,

1. Testicular causes the problem with the testis. The testes has a major role in sperm production. The endocrine system also includes the testes which produces testosterone which is the hormone involved in the male reproductive function. Any disease or infection of the testes can cause reduction in the functioning of the germ cell production and maturity resulting in infertility.

2. Problems of the duct system – The duct system is required for the storage and maturation of sperm. This happens typically in the epididymis. Semen, the fluid that contains sperm, is transported from the epididymis to the penis by the vas deferens. Sperm maturation can be impeded by absent or malfunctioning structures of the duct system.

3. Endocrine causes like the thyroid, hypothalamo-pituitary portal system abnormalities can impact spermatogenesis.

4. Lifestyle practices like smoking, occupational hazards due to electronic equipments or any condition which increases the temperature of the genital organs can affect the sperm production.

B. Amongst females,

1. Ovarian abnormalities which can be genetic, hormonal or endocrine related, endometriosis, infection and tumors can impair oocyte production and quality.

2. Endocrine system: Thyroid, hypothalamo-pituitary ovarian axis disorders can impair steroidogenesis at any level of ootcyte synthesis and can have a bearing on ovulation.

3. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) which is also known as metabolic syndrome not only affects fertility but also has a life long bearing on becoming a risk factor for various non-communicable diseases including malignancy.

4. Fallopian tube abnormalities: It might be difficult or impossible for the egg and the sperm to normally meet for fertilization and for the resulting embryo to proceed to the uterus if the tubes are closed, damaged, or removed.

5. Uterine abnormalities, Uterus is the organ where implantation of the embryo into the endometrium occurs. The Structural or uterine lining issues can have a drastic impact on implantation and the ability to carry the pregnancy to term.

C. Exercises: High-intensity exercise spikes the cortisol levels drastically and can increase core body temperature, causing inflammatory microtrauma throughout the body, and result in abnormal gametogenesis. Moderate exercises are recommended for healthy fertility potential.

Recommendation,

Following the ABC of life that is Activity, Balanced Diet, Controlling of Stress can help couples to improve fertility, which will boost the likelihood of a healthy pregnancy naturally and assist any necessary treatments to work better. To observe their full impact, these lifestyle adjustments should ideally be made for three months before trying for pregnancy. Getting a full fertility test to evaluate the fertility of both spouses is one of the quickest ways to find out why these failure to achieve pregnancy. Remember that the effects of infertility are equally felt by men and women.

For fertility, both men and women should develop a mild exercise regimen, like yoga or walking, that is specially intended to increase blood flow and nutrients to the reproductive systems. Consuming a balanced diet is crucial for achieving or sustaining pregnancy.

Karnataka August 12th, 2024: Samsung has awarded certificates of completion to its first batch of 250 students of its flagship CSR programme, Samsung Innovation Campus at Sri Krishnarajendra Silver Jubilee Technological Institute, Bengaluru. The students were all from the course in Coding & Programming. Through the programme, Samsung has committed to being a strong partner in the Government’s mission to empower the country’s youth and #PoweringDigitalIndia.

The students who were mentored and trained at Shri Krishnarajendra Silver Jubilee Technological Institute, Bengaluru also participated in a hackathon and devised tech-based solutions to solve real-world problems. The hackathon encouraged participants to collaborate, innovate, and develop a problem-solving mindset. They were awarded certificates of completion at a felicitation ceremony by Sri KM Suresh Kumar, Joint Director, Department of Collegiate & Technical Education, Government of Karnataka, Dr. Abhilasha Gaur, CEO, ESSCI, Dr Paul Vizhian S, Principal, University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), and Dr. Vijaya GS, Principal, SKSJTI.

“Samsung Innovation Campus is aligned with the Government of India’s objectives of skilling the youth and empowering them with professional growth opportunities. It is inspiring to see young students develop skills at such a fast pace. We are proud to be a part of their upskilling journey. Samsung is committed to building a platform of skill-based learning that would create job opportunities in future-tech domains, and effect meaningful change”, said SP Chun, Corporate Vice President, Samsung Southwest Asia.

This year the programme goes beyond just skilling to include more exciting opportunities for the students. The national toppers from each domain will receive a cash award of INR 1 Lakh along with an opportunity to visit Samsung facilities in Delhi/NCR. The visits to the facilities will provide the students with an opportunity to interact with the leadership team at Samsung. The national course toppers will also get exciting Samsung products.

During the programme, participants will receive instructor-led blended classroom and online training through approved training and education partners of ESSCI across the country.

The students are also being imparted soft skills training to enhance their employability. The participant mobilisation is being implemented through ESSCI’s training and education partners across India. The approach includes a combination of offline and online learning, immersive hackathons and capstone projects, as well as expert mentorship provided by Samsung employees.

The curriculum structure varies depending on the chosen course track. For instance, participants opting for the AI course will immerse themselves in 270 hours of theoretical training and complete 80 hours of project work. Meanwhile, those pursuing the IoT or Big Data courses will undergo 160 hours of training, supplemented by 80 hours of practical project work. Participants in the Coding & Programming course will engage in 80 hours of training and participate in a 3-day hackathon event.

The programme spans eight educational institutions across four states. In the northern region, training centres are established in Lucknow and Gorakhpur, besides two in Delhi/NCR. In the Southern region, covering states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, training centres are located in Chennai and Sriperumbudur, besides two in Bengaluru.

Three cancer drugs were exempted from customs duty while reducing the levy on x-ray tubes and flat panel detectors used in x-ray machines from 15% to 5%. Lung cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men and it is affecting younger age groups now. Targeted therapy drugs, which cost around Rs 5 lakh a month, are holding out hope for patients as they prolong life by precisely identifying and inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. They are better than other cancer therapies.

By reducing the financial burden on the patients, this move is expected to improve access to advanced cancer treatments. In Karnataka, there are 60 to 65 fatal accidents each year, with 30% resulting from falls from heights, underlining a pivotal area requiring significant improvement. Adopting advanced technologies such as pole arresters can improve workplace safety throughout Bangalore and Karnataka. The government is dedicated to supporting accident-free workplaces through collaborative endeavors with stakeholders, emphasizing adherence to labour laws, especially regarding contract workers and their needs for PPE and canteen facilities. With robust governmental backing and ministerial leadership, our goal is to implement comprehensive safety measures effectively.”

Bengaluru, India 28 June 2024 – As part of the Toyota Mobility Foundation’s $9m Sustainable Cities Challenge, Varanasi has launched a global call for innovators to find data-driven solutions to make the city safer for the millions of people who visit every year for pilgrimage. The Varanasi Challenge is looking for solutions that will allow the city to better manage the growing influx of annual visitors, while making the city more accessible for tourists and local residents, particularly older people and people with disabilities.

Located on the banks of the Ganges River in northern India, Varanasi is widely known as the “spiritual capital” of the nation. The old city of Kashi within Varanasi is one of India’s most important pilgrimage sites, with millions of people visiting every year for religious and cultural reasons. The inflow of tourists, however, when coupled with the city’s narrow, winding lanes and dense urban fabric, raises potential questions around safety and overcrowding. Previous reports have suggested that Varanasi attracted around 70 million visitors, which reiterates the need to enhance the city’s safety and accessibility, especially as most tourists are middle-aged and elderly people.

As part of the Sustainable Cities Challenge, Varanasi is inviting innovators from around the world to develop innovative crowd management solutions that make it easier to accommodate its visitors and make the city safer and more accessible for both residents and visitors alike.

Leveraging technology, data analytics, urban design, behavioral psychology, and crowd science, can provide insights into crowd dynamics and flow, enabling better crowd management and reduced congestion.

In addition to a share of $3 million of implementation grant funding, participants in the challenge will gain exclusive insights into the workings of this historic city and a real-world understanding of user-centered design.

The Sustainable Cities Challenge fosters technology-driven innovative solutions aimed at transforming the public spaces and streets of the city. The Challenge seeks innovative mobility solutions that can be tested, adapted and scaled to suit local contexts, while advancing low-carbon mobility across geographies.”

Varanasi is one of three cities to host challenges, alongside Detroit, USA and Venice, Italy. Over 150 cities from 46 countries around the world entered the challenge after the call to cities was first launched in June 2023.

Applications for the Varanasi Challenge are open from today until the 5th of September. Up to ten semi-finalists will be selected in November 2024 and receive a grant of $50,000 each. Companies will have the opportunity to directly engage with city leaders, end users, and beneficiaries to customize their solutions and demonstrate them on-ground in the city.

In May 2025, up to five finalists will be granted $130,000 each to test their solutions in a larger area of the city over an extended period to assess their impact and further customize their solutions. In March 2026, up to three winners will be selected to share final implementation funding of $1.5 million to further scale their solutions in the city.

Sound Healing Workshop for Madikeri Inmates by Dr. Sham Rock Foundation

Bengaluru, June 26th 2024: In an initiative to promote wellbeing and inner peace, Dr. Sham Rock Foundation, held a sound healing workshop for inmates at the Madikeri District Jail in Karnataka, 2024 under the theme Sonic Solace 5.0.

The workshop, titled “Find Harmony Within: Sound Healing to Empower, Nurture, Heal the Mind, Body & Soul,” was led by Dr. Sham Rock, founder and managing trustee of the foundation, and Ms. Shilpi Das, founder of Charista Foundation. Both are renowned sound healers and inspirational figures.

The event was inaugurated by A.S. Ponnanna MLA, Virajpet ( Kodagu) along with Shri. Pramod Ganapathi, Panchayat President of Gonikoppal, Madikeri, and presided over by Shri. Sanjay Jatti, Assistant Superintendent of Prison. Over 160 inmates participated in the session, experiencing the benefits of sound healing which included detoxification, stress reduction, and emotional regulation.

Mr. Sanjay Jatti commended the foundation’s efforts, highlighting the positive impact the workshop had on the inmates. Dr. Sham Rock said that criminal behaviour is often rooted in circumstance, not inherent traits. This session aims to equip participants with tools to manage their emotions and avoid making impulsive choices. Dr. Sham also expressed his intention to reach out to the Karnataka Home Minister to conduct similar programs at Parappana Agrahara Jail in Bengaluru.

Dr. Sham Rock Foundation‘s mission extends beyond this workshop. They aim to empower aspiring artists from rural areas by providing training and opportunities to pursue music as a profession. They also conduct sound healing sessions and interactive drumming circles for various groups, including cancer patients, government schools, and senior citizen homes, believing in the power of music to promote healing, creativity, peace and a sense of community, music and sound healing also helps patients with Parkinson disease, dyslexia and other issues.
