Amid COVID-19, father donates liver to save life of his little daughter, Jupiter Hospital performs a liver transplant to save 5-years old Pune girl

Timely surgical intervention and liver donation by father to a little daughter, in times of COVID-19, saved the life a 5-years old Pune girl who was suffering from life-threatening liver disease. Ten-hours long liver transplant surgery by an experienced team of surgeons at Jupiter Hospital saved the life of Shubhra who received a liver from her father

Shubra was suffering from biliary atresia, a condition in which there is the failure of development of bile ducts in the liver at birth. Children suffering from this condition develop jaundice. She underwent a corrective procedure at birth known as Kasai’s procedure, said Dr Kalpesh Patil, the Paediatric surgeon. However, when she became 4 years old, she developed jaundice, accumulation of fluid in her abdomen and multiple bouts of vomiting containing blood and would require life-saving liver transplantation, said Dr Vishnu Biradar, the Paediatric gastroenterologist

The complex surgery which took place over ten hours at Jupiter hospital in Baner, Pune was performed by a team of transplant surgeons headed by Dr Gaurav Chaubal.

“Liver transplantation in children is often very challenging as they have very small blood vessels which need to be connected to the new liver and the operation is technically challenging. There is no room for error,” said Dr Chaubal.

Shubra’s father donated a part of his liver to his child. All necessary testing and diagnostic procedures were carried out and the transplant was performed on 4th July 2020

Shubra and her father underwent a full and extensive transplant assessment. The old liver from the child was removed surgically and the donor’s liver was connected. The transplanted liver began working straight away. At the end of the surgery, the recipient was stable and shifted out to the intensive care unit for further care. All the protocols related to the prevention of the spread of the COVID was followed during the conduct of this surgery and in the Transplant ICU said Dr Srinivas Tambe, Paediatric intensivist. She spent 14 days in the hospital and was discharged. Both father and child have recovered completely. This successful transplant has led to a very high possibility of a complete cure from the liver cirrhosis in a new lease of life to the child”

Shubhra’s case clearly points out that people should not be scared of COVID-19 and should not delay life-saving surgeries. Jupiter Hospital has been taking full care of non-COVID-19 critical cases and performs advanced surgeries taking all precautions for patient safety and care.

PXIL highlights key power market regulatory reforms and insights

Ahead of the public hearing of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (Power Market) Regulations 2020, the Power Exchange India Limited (PXIL), conducted its 2ndMarket Advisory Committee and stakeholder consultation meeting to discuss key market regulatory reforms concerning the power industry. The event threw light on crucial topics – Key aspects of Draft Power Market Regulations 2020, Decision support tools for Real-Time Market (RTM), Significance of market coupling and dual price discovery, Efficiency and convergence of prices. The meeting was attended by more than 80 participants from Distribution Companies, IPPS, SLDCs, Captive generators and other stakeholders from the market.

Dr. Kirit S. Parikh, Chairman, MAC & Independent Director, PXIL, in his opening remarks emphasised on the need of converging prices in the collective segment, congratulated the market participants for having demonstrated the need to have competition between exchanges, and, finally, on the benefits, the proposed market coupling is likely to bring to the market and market participants. Dr. Parikh further added that the Government has been promoting competition in the procurement of various services. The electricity sector, in general, and electricity procurement, in particular, falls under the guiding principles to foster competition and transparency.

In the opening remarks, while talking about market coupling, pricing and need for market participation, Mr. Prabhajit Kumar Sarkar, MD & CEO, PXIL said that “The rapidly changing framework of the entire power sector demonstrates the key role that power markets have to play. The underlying need for competition in the power markets is therefore gaining acute significance in the industry. A competitive marketplace can thrive on a strong foundation of an enabling market structure like market coupling, fair rules that allow competition to thrive and ensuring ease of participation on various marketplaces.”

One of the important aspects discussed during the meeting was that the two existing Power Exchanges operate in the same geographical area with completely independent order books and independently-run price discovery systems. Consequently, different prices also known as dual prices are discovered for market participants for the same time and geography in the two Exchanges. This difference in prices between the two exchanges is sometimes used by participants to compute notional gains and losses, which in turn is used to determine whether to continue participation or not. Such loss/gain computation is a fallacious exercise because the price differences itself are notional and an outcome of the change in participation from one exchange to another.

Mr. Anshul Garg, Head, Power Sales & Trading, Adani Power emphasised that competition will foster exchanges to enhance the service levels, innovate for the market which in turn will reduce the overall costs for procurement. Mr. Baba, Director TTIC, JK PDD, echoed the sentiment and mentioned that monopolistic structures are inherently inefficient. He also suggested bringing down the gate closure time, in RTM segment, closer to delivery so that sudden changes in demand/generation can be handled effectively.

Mr. Rajesh Mahajan, Head, KISPL, also brought forth the increased role power exchanges will have to play as the markets for longer duration contracts and financial markets open up in the sector.

While sharing his views on pricing and market participation, Mr. Kapil Dev, Vice President & Business Head, PXIL said, “We believe that prices cannot be the glue to stick liquidity in one product or one exchange. And efficiency in the convergence of prices can only be achieved through higher consistency and sustained participation. I think market participants need to continue participation on both the exchanges which would lead to better overall returns for the buyer and the seller depending on the market dynamics.”

The power market of India is expected to grow exponentially in the future considering its scale and size which has created a dire need for multiple exchanges and competing marketplaces to be available for participants. And, as the power market progress, PXIL is determined to play a critical role in providing competitive efficiency in innovation, services, cost, management and all such parameters which can enable to create a thriving and optimized power market.

NDDB issues advisory for management of dairy animals during the rainy season to dairy cooperatives

14 August 2020, New Delhi: The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has disseminated essential advisory for the management of dairy animals during the rainy season to dairy cooperatives across the country. NDDB has also requested the dairy cooperatives to prominently display the advisory at village level dairy cooperative societies for wider propagation. Shri Dilip Rath, Chairman, NDDB said that the rainy season presents its own set of challenges to the dairy farmers. Adequate measures are required in the areas of housing, feeding, health, and breeding for managing dairy animals. He said that the dairy cooperatives have a massive community outreach in rural areas and we should leverage this network to create awareness on adopting measures for rain-affected dairy animals. During the rainy season, dairy farmers tend to alter animal feeding systems in favour of green fodder which is available in abundance in most parts of the country. This is likely to pose challenges in terms of impaired digestive efficacy and altered milk quality. Similarly, the incidences of parasitic infestations, as well as mastitis, are also common in this season. NDDB-developed advisory for the efficient management of dairy animals during the rainy season will help optimize the productivity of dairy animals.

NoBrokerHOOD Adds a Bundle of Security Features to Help Residents Fight Covid-19

August 14, 2020: As India continues to fight the spread of the pandemic, NoBrokerHood, the integrated visitor, society, and payment management app by NoBroker.com has added multiple features to its existing suite of services. These features ensure that society residents are well-equipped to mitigate the risk of catching or spreading infection.

While information about the rise and decline in the number of cases in the vicinity is being dispersed by a few apps and news channels, none of them gives micro-level data. The COVID Tracker feature in NoBrokerHood gives details of the containment zones near a society. So, in case, domestic help or a driver are coming from any of the containment zones near the society, residents will be alerted and can choose to deny entry to them. Along with that, the app is also integrated with Aarogya Setu, an app that determines the risk status of a visitor or domestic help by scanning through a database of known cases across India. The app then marks individuals as safe, infected, at high risk, or at moderate risk. With NoBrokerHood integration the app scans QR code from the visitor’s Aarogya Setu app and their risk status is instantly sent to the residents along with their other entry details.

All the NoBrokerHood societies have mandated temperature checks and masks for any visitors entering society. Guards using the NoBrokerHOOD app will screen every visitor with a temperature gun and upload the respective details on the app, thereby alerting the residents. If a visitor has a high temperature, residents can ask the guards to deny them entry. They have also installed UV Sanitization kits at the entrance for products being delivered within a society.

Another safety measure that the brand has implemented across societies is a touchless entry with face recognition. The touchless entry process begins with a face capture with three scans from left, right and centre, which takes less than 30 seconds. During this process, encrypted representation of the face is captured, rather than an image to ensure high-level safety. Once this detail is added to the app, daily visitors will just need to face the guard’s mobile phone camera, get instant contactless approval and enter the society building – a much secure and faster process than any other solution available till date.

Committee members and residents can’t personally monitor if their security guards are checking every spot in the building society with many blocks and many miles to cover. With NoBrokerHood’s Live Patrol, residents and MC members can print out unique QR codes for the society. These QR codes are linked to latitudes and longitudes and QR code stickers can be placed at the matching locations. The feature uses geotagging and GPS on the guard devices which means each scan has to match the geotagged location, and GPS will show if the guard is actually at that spot while taking the QR scan.

The security staff or guard on patrol has to scan each QR code on his beat. Committee members can even track the guard’s movement and see the time and date of each scan from the NoBrokerHood dashboard.

This is a fool-proof method to ensure safety. If the guard tries to scan the QR code for the clubhouse in his cabin, or anywhere else, he will get an error message indicating the wrong location. If there is anything that seems out of place, the guard can instantly take a picture and create an Incident Report.

To ensure seamless and secure communication within society residents, the app has a feature called InterCaller, through which residents can communicate with each other and with guards without sharing personal numbers. A similar feature called Guard-talkie is also launched for guards to communicate with each other.

Akhil Gupta, Co-founder and CTO of NoBroker said, “COVID-19 has disrupted lives by affecting the daily routines and activities. The features that we have integrated are many firsts in a society app and are aimed at solving pain points of society living. We are leveraging solutions powered by a mix of man and machine such as face masks and touchless entry – to get the best of both worlds. With the combination of these measures, we hope to cut down the risk of COVID-19 transmissions across societies.
