With promotion to the SAFF Women’s Premier League already assured for next season, the two went head-to-head to determine which team would win the championship. After a hard-fought final which ended 1-1 after extra time, AlUla clinched the title by winning 4-2 on penalties.

The championship trophy was proudly presented to the AlUla club by Lamia Bahaian, Vice President of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), in the esteemed presence of Aalia Al-Rasheed, Head of the Women’s Football Department at SAFF.

As for Al Taraji, they enter next season’s Saudi women’s top flight as runners-up after narrowly missing out on the title. Al Amal also joined AlUla and Al Taraji in the 2024/25 SAFF Women’s Premier League after securing the third and final promotion spot thanks to a 3-1 win against Al Taqadum in Wednesday’s third-place play-off.

A thrilling campaign from start to finish, this season’s second edition of the SAFF Women’s First Division League welcomed 26 clubs – beginning in group stage format with four groups of five teams and one group of six. After facing each other home and away across five cities, 12 qualifiers progressed to the final rounds – again using a group stage format with four groups of three teams. The winners from each progressed to the semi-finals, where AlUla beat Al Amal 3-0 and Al Taraji overcame Al Taqadum 1-0 – paving the way for Wednesday’s incredible final.

Over the 2023/24 SAFF Women’s First Division League season, 122 matches were played with 111 wins and 979 goals. These figures illustrate the positive direction of travel for professional women’s football in Saudi Arabia, as well as the skill, development, and performances of players and clubs alike.

The SAFF Women’s First Division League is one of several competitions playing a crucial role in the strategic growth of women’s football in Saudi Arabia. By increasing the number of football competitions and enhancing standards, the aim of SAFF is to foster the development of talented female players within the Kingdom and provide pathways to representing the national team across age groups.

Kanojjiya’s valiant fifty in vain as Chennai Singams go down to Majhi Mumbai in ISPL semi-final

New Delhi, 15th March 2024: Chennai Singams’ campaign in the Indian Street Premier League (ISPL) T10 tournament came to an end in the semi-final, as they went down to Majhi Mumbai by 58 runs at the Dadoji Kondadev Stadium here on Thursday. Chasing a stiff target of 146, Chennai could not build momentum in their chase and managed to score 87 in reply.

Strong start

Chennai began the semi-final on a high, reducing Mumbai to 13 for 3 in the third over after being asked to bowl. V Vignesh and Rajdeep Jadeja struck in their opening overs, and in the third, Vignesh ran out Vijay Pawle to leave Mumbai in some trouble.

However, Mumbai revived their innings with an 88-run partnership in just 27 deliveries between Abhishek Dalhor (62 off 23) and opener Ajaz Qureshi (33 off 17).

50-50 challenge

One of the unique aspects of the ISPL is the 50-50 challenge. A batting team sets themselves a target of a minimum of 16 runs and chooses who should bowl from the opposition team. If the batting team achieves or exceeds the target, 50 per cent more runs are added. For example, if a team scores 20 runs, they will get 30 runs for that over and if they score 10 runs, they will get only five runs.

In the Challenge Over, Vishwanath Jadhav ended up conceding 26 runs, with Dalhor striking two sixes and a nine, awarded when the ball lands in the stands. As a result, Mumbai added 39 to their total.

Towards the end of the Mumbai innings, Krushna Pawar scored an unbeaten 23 off 12, taking the side’s total close to 150. For Chennai, Dilip Binjwa was the most expensive bowler, going for 48 from his two overs, while Jadhav went for 40.

Kanojjiya’s fighting knock

In the chase, Chennai opener Sanjay Kanojjiya produced a magnificent knock of 60 off 26, striking six sixes and three fours. However, the rest of the line-up could not fire, with Chennai losing the big wickets of Ketan Mhatre (14 off 9) and Bablu Patil (2 off 3) cheaply. Despite Kanojjiya holding up one end solidly, Chennai kept losing wickets at regular intervals at the other end faced with the steep asking-rate.

BRIEF SCORES: Majhi Mumbai 145-6 in 10 overs (Abhishek Dalhor 62, Ajaz Qureshi 33; Rajdeep Jadeja 1-10, V Vignesh 1-11) beat Chennai Singams 87 in 9.4 overs (Sanjay Kanojjiya 60; Devid Gogoi 4-8, Bashrat Wani 2-17, Vijay Pawle 2-20) by 58 runs

MS Dhoni in a double role for Tata IPL 2024

Mumbai, March 11th, 2024: As the TATA IPL frenzy hits a fever pitch ahead of the 2024 season, JioCinema launched its campaign for what promises to be yet another exciting edition. The campaign features three ad films, the first of which stars MS Dhoni in a double role. All three ad films spotlight the collective excitement of watching the TATA IPL on digital. The campaign is built on the insight that an increasing number of Indians are now opting to consume live sport on digital, including the TATA IPL which saw a record reach of 449 million last season on JioCinema.

The film, conceptualised by The Script Room and produced by Early Man Films, casts MS Dhoni in a unique double role of a grandfather and his grandson. It portrays the tongue-in-cheek story of a grandson glued to his phone screen as a riveting TATA IPL match unfolds, while the grandfather, also deeply engrossed in watching the same match on his phone, starts experiencing discomfort in his chest. On their way to the hospital in the ambulance, the medical attendant too now is seen watching the game on his phone while the grandfather and grandson humorously continue to watch the game on their respective phones at the back of the ambulance van. The plot takes a twist as the grandfather burps and they all realize the discomfort was due to a mere bout of gas. Just then a six goes off in the match, which cheers the three up, bringing the film to an end. The campaign will be breaking across TV, digital, social and print.

“The campaign draws from one of the biggest consumption shifts we’ve seen among viewers in recent times, as they migrate to digital from linear avenues to catch their daily dose of live sports action,” said JioCinema’s Creative Marketing Head Shagun Seda. The campaign idea ‘Sab Yahaan, Aur Kahaan!’ centre stages the ubiquity of watching the TATA IPL on digital, and JioCinema continuing to present the world’s biggest T20 tournament without any barriers to accessibility, affordability and language. Creatively, we attempted to present MS Dhoni in a manner that resonates with fans who cherish every minute of him in action.”

“This is more than just a campaign for us, it’s what large agency heads call “a mandate”. And what a crazy mandate it was, from cracking the central idea of ‘Sab Yahaan, Aur Kahaan!’, to working closely with the JioCinema team and scripting out multiple films, to jamming with the production team and seeing it through, it has been a hectic and emotionally gratifying journey,” said Ayyappan, Founder, The Script Room. “Thanks a lot to the JioCinema team for their trust and the camaraderie, couldn’t have asked for more. It also gives us great joy that they pushed us towards the best creative output. We are super happy with the work and hope everyone enjoys it.”

TATA IPL 2024 will commence on JioCinema with the southern derby as MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings face off with Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22, 2024. Viewers will be able to catch the latest season for free in 4K across 12 languages including Haryanvi for the first time, multi-cam options including the much-hyped Hero Cam, and many more fan-engagement features including Jeeto Dhan Dhana Dhan.

The Emirates FA Cup Takes Over New York With Unprecedented US Tour

Emirates FA Cup

New York – March 8, 2024 – The Emirates FA Cup, soccer’s oldest and most-esteemed national knockout competition, made its presence felt across the New York area last week, with an inaugural United States trophy tour scoring points and social posts with thousands of casual and diehard football fans, celebrities, youth groups and athletes.

The New York ‘Takeover’ included a special event held pregame at Madison Square Garden with Knicks star Josh Hart and soccer legend Tim Howard; a visit to UBS Arena for a pregame meet and greet with Islanders fans (and their UK supporters group who happened to be on hand that night); a stop in with John Oliver at the Beacon Theater; and visits to other New York landmarks like the board at NASDAQ, Central Park, Brookyln Bridge, 30 Rockefeller Center and the Empire State Building. Additionally, local soccer influencers like Alexis Guerrero took the cup to his favorite NYC spots such as L’Industrie Pizzeria; Dylan Sadik, aka “The College Cuber” reimagined the trophy using Rubik’s cubes for fans to enjoy; and Frankie Flo freestyled alongside the famous silverware.

A major highlight of the tour was partnering with Black Star, a pioneering program dedicated to fostering the growth of soccer in Black American communities, and holding a special clinic at SoFive in Brooklyn. The event aimed to inspire the next generation of soccer players, while also highlighting the importance of diversity and representation within the sport. DaMarcus Beasley, renowned U.S. Soccer legend and Emirates FA Cup veteran, headlined the event and led a soccer clinic alongside local coaches. Beasley shared his personal soccer journey, spanning both sides of the Atlantic, and offered invaluable insights to aspiring players.

Speaking after the event, Beasley said: “Black Star teaming up with the Emirates FA Cup to grow the game in black communities and inspire the next generation is so important. Programs and clinics like these are much needed. My time spent with the kids was so much fun. To be able to watch them compete, learn and have fun was the best outcome I could have asked for.”

The tour was capped by a pair of sold-out viewing parties of the Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round at Moonlight Studios in Soho, where one lucky fan (and a plus one) won the Grand Prize to be a guest of The English Football Association (The FA) for the Emirates FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in London this May.

James Gray, Commercial Director at The FA, said: “We were delighted to bring the Emirates FA Cup to the US for this historic trophy tour. It’s an exciting time for the game in the US, with the ongoing growth of soccer evident to see, especially with the FIFA World Cup just a couple of years away. The trophy tour was an ideal opportunity to bring US fans closer to this iconic competition through the Watch Parties in collaboration with our broadcast partners ESPN+, and it was special to meet and engage with new audiences at these events.”
