Deriving from ‘Swaavalamban’ in Sanskrit, the Independent Women Awards honored, felicitated, and celebrated young, budding & accomplished women entrepreneurs and socialite women for their milestones and significant contributions in becoming independent, supporting change and empowering economic development for women. According to the UNWomen, “This year, the theme for International Women’s Day – Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world – celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights the gaps that remain.”

On receiving the award, Sonu Malik Khunger said, “The recent lockdown tested the grit of businesses for almost a year. I feel that being chosen for this award on International Women’s Day is a blessing from Guruji, just when industry has started looking up. It is not a personal achievement, but a recognition of the efforts of our entire team at The Good Event Company. I am thankful to Chhavi Hemanth ji and the entire team of EBC India for having conferred this award upon me.”

Sonu’s journey into event management began out of serendipity, when her father became ill and as the eldest of the siblings, she had to step up to take reins of the family business. At the time, she juggled between three careers simultaneously – she taught at Jamia Milia Islamia’s College of Business Studies, tutored students at Mount Carmel School and also took out time to manage the event planning and organizing business. With her grit and determination, she repaid all loans and turned the business around to make it a hallmark of quality among esteemed clientele in South Delhi within no time. Later, her brother Hemant quit a flourishing career in the banking sector to support her. Sonu soon focused on the business fully and continued to be at the helm even after her marriage.

Now in its fifth decade of operations, the business has grown by leaps and bounds. The Good Event Company not only delivers memorable events for weddings, parties, workshops, seminars and corporate events all around Delhi but has also wowed its customers at destination events in five-star properties in Goa, Jodhpur, Mussoorie, Mumbai and other places. The Good Event Company has single-handedly managed high-profile weddings in the celebrity circles and has worked closely with India’s top event designers at glitzy, star-studded events such as the wedding reception of Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma in Mumbai. Its premier furniture and props have been featured in Bollywood movies and episodes of popular web series on India’s top OTT platforms such as Amazon Prime Video.

Hemant Malik, the CEO of The Good Event Company, says, “Our business had carved a name for itself in middle to upper segments for our reliable quality, superb and contemporary collections and attention to detail. But every business has its ups and downs and how you deal with the ebbs of life define your success. Sonu’s contributions to our business at one such abyss moment paved a strong foundation for us to bounce back, and The Good Event Company will forever be indebted to her for that. This women achiever’s award is a well-deserved recognition and I hope it will inspire millions of other women to pursue their dreams despite whatever life throws at them.”

Sonu dedicated the award to her late father Shri Ramesh Kumar Malik, who’s first death anniversary coincided with the day she received this award. This recognition is an apt eulogy to my dad, who was my inspiration and taught us to keep marching forward and always be in action.
