World Autism day – Latest research on autism springs renewed hope for autistic kids and parents alike

Dr Sai Krishna Vegivada & Dr Garima Vegivada

As we commemorate the World Autism Day on 2nd April, 2023, there have been several momentous developments from research done on Autism, in the recent past. These findings raise the expectations of early detection and prevention of autism and management of autistic kids. The two significant outcomes are, response of toddlers to ‘motherese’ or baby talk and regular developmental screening. These can aid in identifying children with a high risk of autism at an early stage and remedy their condition.

Motherese is a form of simplified, exaggerated melodic speech that parents use to communicate with new-borns and young toddlers. A horse becomes horsie; a dog becomes doggie; parents become mama and dada. The tendency to speak in such short sing-song phrases is universal across cultures. We all heard of mother conversing with their bundle of joy by uttering ‘mummum’ for water or lala in Telugu, meow meow for cat etc., all of which is Motherese.

Recent studies by the University of California, San Diego; indicated that the early sign of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in children is reduced response to motherese speech and challenges faced in sustained attention to social information in general. This study published on February 8, 2023, states, Toddlers’ level of attention to ‘motherese’ speech can be used as a biomarker for Autism Spectrum Disorder. To measure the response levels, scientists have developed a new eye-tracking test, which can accurately identify toddlers with a subtype of ASD.

These revelations hold immense promise to early detection of Autism in infants. We at Hear n Say Clinic have taken the cue from the study and are encouraging mothers of new born babies to use motherese as a response evoking technique and found good measure of success. If a child doesn’t respond to motherese at the age of 1 to 2 years, then its time to seek help from a professional, says Dr Garima Vegivada, Clinical Director – Child Development Unit, Hear ‘N’ Say clinic.

The other technique to identify the risk of autism in children is regular developmental screening during well-child check-ups or check-ups involving visits to paediatrician for general check-ups or vaccinations. Parents should request paediatricians to screen child for any autistic feature or red flags and refer them for appropriate evaluations.

Another study emphasised on collecting Brain-wave data during hearing test routinely given to new-borns. Such data could help clinicians spot neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism in early infancy. Researchers found that new-borns who later received an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis had pronounced delays in their brainstem’s responses to sounds. On an average these new-borns had a 1.76-millisecond lag in a system that operates at a microsecond timescale, compared to new-borns who developed neurotypically.

These new-borns may have difficulty integrating sound with other sensory streams like vision, movement, and pain because of limited access to sound frequency. Furthermore, they may have difficulty communicating socially and learning languages. The research, published by Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS Nexus) and led by Rutgers psychology professor Elizabeth Torres, suggests a possible approach for developing a universal screening tool for neurodevelopmental disorders with new avenues for targeted personalized treatments.

We routinely perform BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry) test at Hear ‘N’ Say Clinic, as a part of hearing assessment on children as young as one month. Any delay in response found through this test helps parents to be aware of possible diagnosis of autism in future but it comes with its own challenges, like cost of the test, also sometimes need to administer mild sedation under supervision to the child for this test and parents are often apprehensive of it, says Dr Sai Krishna Vegivada, Clinical Director – Hearing and vestibular Unit, Senior Audiologist – Hear ‘N’ Say Clinic.

However, the biggest challenge we face in India is lack of universal hearing screening among new born babies. Several professionals and parents have the notion of child with normal hearing ability not needing hearing screening. But with latest studies indicating the usefulness of new born hearing screening for early detection of ASD, it is imperative to have nation-wide universal new born hearing screening.

Any delay in diagnosis of ASD will lead to ASD child developing compensatory coping mechanisms of their nervous systems and having circuitry different from neurotypical babies. On the other hand early diagnosis of autism allows for earlier access to interventions, which can help improve outcomes for children with ASD. Research has shown that early intervention can lead to improvements in communication, social skills, and cognitive abilities.

Early diagnosis also allows families to access support and resources that can help them better understand and support their child. Families can learn about strategies and therapies that can help improve their child’s development and behaviour.

Early diagnosis can reduce stress and uncertainty for families. It can help them understand their child’s behaviour and needs, which in turn can lead to a more positive and proactive approach to parenting, At Hear ‘N’ Say we have seen lot of parents struggling in the marriage because of child having issues.

Early diagnosis allows families and educators to plan for the child’s educational needs. With a diagnosis, the child can receive specialized education services and accommodations that can help them succeed in school.

Exclusive Interview with Sneha Biswas, Founder and CEO of Early Steps Academy

In an exclusive interview with Shreyas Webmedia Solutions (SWS), Sneha Biswas, Founder and CEO of Early Steps Academy, discussed how Early Steps Academy is revolutionizing academia with its innovative, Harvard-style curriculum

SWS: Please tell us about your company. How have you shaped the education sector by taking a digital-first approach?

Sneha Biswas: Early Steps Academy is an after-school learning program for school children worldwide. Its unique global curriculum exposes school children in ages 8-18 to a range of modern essential subjects and skills through the famous case study method, pioneered at Harvard, and all put in simple childlike language. The case method enables children to see the application of concepts in the real world, thereby making them confident not just in classrooms and tests, but also in the real world. With students from 47 countries, the digital-first approach to learning through the live online sessions help facilitate global interactions for young children, maximizing their exposure and making them 10X confident in this complex, ever-changing, globalized world.

SWS:  The world is changing faster than ever before, and students are smarter and more technologically advanced. How do you keep the next generation up to date with this ever-changing and complex world?

Sneha Biswas: Education, as a sector, is the most important sector to drive the economy and to make sure that the world will be in safe hands in the future. However, unfortunately, the sector has not seen any transformational innovation in the last century. While companies like Netflix, Uber and Amazon have completely revolutionized how we operate, in education we see the same subjects, the same kind of classroom designs with benches, aisles and teachers, the same focus on exams and the same routine for children. Even when we talk about the most progressive schools, the modifications are marginal – a little more interactive pedagogy, better student-teacher ratio and a slightly higher focus on application than theory.

Early Steps Academy is the world’s first program to transform education and learning for children by revolutionizing what and how children learn in the 21st century. With a range of modern essential subjects, focus on skills, one global curriculum and tangible learning outcomes, Early Steps’ mission is to make education relevant (useful) and engaging ( fun!) for the 2 Billion school-going children worldwide.

SWS: How does Early Steps Academy help school children become 10X more confident in the real world?

Sneha Biswas: In this fast-paced, rapidly changing world, children can become 10X confident and maximize their potential only when they are aware of the changes in the world, which means that they must be exposed to modern and essential 21st century subjects from Entrepreneurship, Climate, Space Tech, Applied Math and more. Confidence is not a factor of just knowledge, but also the ability to use that knowledge. This can be done by equipping children with the right set of skills that would enable them to succeed even if the world looks completely different in the next decade.

SWS: How is Early Steps Academy disrupting traditional teaching methods with its 1000+ modern essential subjects and 21st century skills curriculum?

Sneha Biswas: Early Steps Academy is disrupting education by revolutionizing what and how children learn in the 21st century. With the mission of making education relevant (useful) and engaging ( fun!) for children, Early Steps Academy’s unique case-based curriculum for children is a very different learning experience. The learning is practical, focused on real world knowledge and hones critical 21st century skills of thinking and communication in young learners – the key ingredients for success in the 21st century.

SWS: Could you please tell us about your company’s vision and how you are preparing for the future of learning?

Sneha Biswas: By 2030, there will be 3.5 Billion school going children in the world and it is imperative for the survival of the planet to have truly educated and confident children to run it, even as the world is changing at a rapid pace. Therefore, our mission is to reach each and every school-going children and introduce the Early Steps way of learning to them – thereby making sure that every child is able to maximize his/her potential and every child is walking out of school years with 10X confidence to face the real world.

SWS: The founder’s mission is to bring Early Steps Academy to 3.5 billion school-aged children by 2030.

SWS: Technology is crucial in the education industry. Tell us about how your company leverages technology and how do you see the scenario changing in the coming years

Sneha Biswas: Technology has helped in two things – faster dissemination of information and providing global exposure to learners. Faster dissemination of information is a critical component of learning in the 21st century world where things are moving at an unprecedented pace and knowledge becomes redundant very quickly. Additionally, technology enables a global reach for young school children, like how we do at Early Steps Academy by creating global classrooms for learners where children from different countries can come together and learn together. Increasing the speed of accessibility to high quality learning and expanding the exposure of school-going learners beyond their city is only possible through technology and that is a critical piece of solving a problem of this scale.

Za’atar Brings Loads Of Heritage And Love From The Middle East To Mumbai

March 2023, Mumbai: What makes Middle Eastern cuisine so special is the fact that it’s a blend of different practices and traditions from different parts of the world. One can see the different culinary traits the cuisine has inherited from different regions, such as Mongolia, India, Africa, and even today, Europe. It’s hard to resist the enticing flavors from this region that never fail to strike a chord with your heart and palate. And Za’atar is on a mission to make you fall in love with Middle Eastern cuisine, one dish at a time. Since its inception, the eatery has been whipping up food that’s not only delicious but also heartwarming.

Za’atar first opened its doors in Bandra in June 2018 and was one of the few places that had a full-fledged Lebanese menu under one roof. After some time, Za’atar shifted to Khar and expanded to two more locations, with one outlet opening in Mumbai’s affluent neighborhood, Mahalaxmi, and two more openings in Pune. Ever since it came into being, Za’atar has always worked on the principle of serving delicious yet affordable food that customers can greatly relish. They are also very adamant about not falling for the fads that keep circulating in the food industry.

“Back in 2017, when we friends were exploring the idea of working together, the discussions would always revolve around the idea of having a prominently Indian-owned and founded QSR, but to go beyond Indian food and explore other cuisines. We always thought there was an underdeveloped market in India within the QSR space, but with a lot of potentials. It was our love for Middle Eastern cuisine and wanting to be our own customers that made us push to start this brand. After having researched the market, we realised the ingredients were available, and there was no excuse to complain but to just do it ourselves—that’s how Za’atar was born. The beauty of Middle Eastern and Lebanese cuisine is that it is a light and easy diet that also fits many dietary lifestyles, such as vegan, keto, high protein, and low carb. It’s my go-to meal any time of the day,” says Advait Agnihotri, co-founder of Za’atar. Besides Agnihotri, the founding team of Za’atar includes Anuj Solanki, Jai Sarvaiya, and Nirvaan Thacker, who is also the chef.

When asked about the name ‘Za’atar,’ Jai Sarvaiya says that the name stands for a spice that is widely used in Middle Eastern food. “Everyone we spoke with had fond memories of traveling to the Middle East or the UK/US and enjoying a cheesy za’atar manakeesh or a labneh with za’atar. That’s when we decided to name our brand after the spice, as it’s not only unique but also because it serves as a representation of the Middle East,” he adds.

Za’atar Brings Loads Of Heritage And Love From The Middle East To Mumbai

As for the food, Za’atar has always been meticulous about respecting the cuisine and maintaining high standards. Some of their best practices for ensuring the authenticity and high quality of the dishes involve importing spices from the Middle East and working closely with their vendors, who ensure a steady supply of the freshest ingredients daily.

Some of their delicacies include a plethora of mezze served with pickled vegetables and pita bread; Classic Falafel Shawarma consisting of crispy fried falafels, lettuce, cucumber, and tomatoes along with harissa, tahina, and pickled vegetables; Harissa Cheese Manakeesh; Chicken Seekh Bowl; Schoug Mushroom Bowl; Cottage Cheese Moussaka served with grilled paneer, red pepper and tomato sauce, and feta cheese; and more. Za’atar’s signature dessert is the Dark Chocolate and Hazelnut Hummus, which is an all-time favorite. It’s vegan, light, and has some serious protein too! Also, certain items on the menu can be served vegan or Jain on request.

The person behind Za’atar’s mouth-watering, versatile menu is Nirvaan Thacker, who has always had a passion for cooking. “Since I was a child, I have always loved food and started cooking at a very young age too. There was a lot of influence from my grandmother and my parents as well, who are huge foodies and love cooking as well. The ‘Travel and Living’ channel played a big role in exposing the possibilities of a career in food; my favorite shows are Anthony Bourdain’s,” he adds when asked about what motivated him to enter the culinary world.

“It’s been a rollercoaster ride since we started including the COVID period, but I think it’s for three reasons: Firstly, we have a simple menu that we have worked on several times to ensure that we consistently deliver the same taste and quality. Secondly, we’ve always tried to give something new to our customers and tried our best to keep coming up with newer offerings, and lastly, we’ve got a great customer base that’s supported us from the start and even continues to do so. Many of them now know us on a personal basis and have always given us honest feedback, which has helped us get things right and improve our service over the years,” says Anuj Solanki.

Nothing can win over someone’s heart the way good food can. And Za’atar has been doing just that and more since its inception. Make sure to head over to the nearest Za’atar outlet or order some of their finest delicacies to your doorstep!
