India, 1st April 2023: Pregnancy and giving birth are life-changing experiences. As a society, we have romanticized them and in doing so, lessened their gravity.

coto, a global social community and a #WomenForWomen platform, recently conducted a webinar on postpartum depression to bring to the fore the pressure women undergo post- pregnancy. With an ensemble panel of experts, the discussion put the spotlight on the emotional and mental state of our super moms after giving birth. One of the highlights of the session was when Ila Arun, who is known for her mesmerizing voice, spoke about her play ‘Baby’s Blues’. Directed by Ila herself, it takes us on both realistic and surrealistic portrayals of postpartum depression.

While postpartum depression is rarely talked about, it affects approximately 1 in 9 women after pregnancy. During the session on the coto platform, Ila Arun and popular actors Shweta Kawatra, Shilpa Mehta, and Anjula Bedi raised some crucial questions about postpartum depression and offered their personal experiences to help manage the condition with grace.

During the webinar, Shweta Kawatra talked about her own struggle with postpartum depression and how she overcame it. Ila Arun’s daughter, Ishitta Arun, who runs a community on coto called ‘Why So Serious?’ emphasized how the right direction and support from our family always helps. The session brought light to the fact that 22% women in India suffer from postpartum depression whereas 60% of working women are more susceptible to going through the same.

Sharing her thoughts on postpartum depression Ila Arun said, “As dark as our play is, there is a human angle and humor too in Baby Blues. This play is an eye-opener for everyone. The topic is of utter importance that we are talking about the same on this forum today. I like what coto stands for and how it has provided a platform for women to talk about anything freely be it their achievements, shortcomings, wishes, etc. There used to be a saying ‘Women are women’s worst enemies.’ This saying is taking a backseat in today’s time.”

She further added, “It is not just the wife who goes through the depression, it is the husband also who goes through the changes with her.”

Shweta Kawatra said, “When I saw Baby’s Blues, I was able to see myself from the outside. All the emotions of confusion, suffocation, that the main character and her husband in the play go through are relatable. The play showcases a New York based nuclear family. We are also a nuclear family. It’s very difficult to find help and trust someone. I wanted to kill myself. I felt stripped off who I was. I had been a working woman all my life and now I could not see hope. At the same time, I wanted to take care of my baby. It took me at least one year to realize that I could be suffering from postpartum depression. There was never any talk about that topic in my time.” Here is the glimpse of what she shared link.

Shilpa Mehta said, “Even though I am unmarried, I relate to, and understand postpartum depression, just like a woman, who even though doesn’t have her own child, but understands motherhood when she adopts a baby. Postpartum depression is such a deep thing that happens to everyone. For some women, it’s very heightened and for others, it’s very normal and natural because families are there for your support. In the western world, it becomes a little difficult since the concept of nuclear families is more prevalent.” Here is the glimpse of what she shared link

Ishitta Arun said, “When you become a mother, there are different degrees of suffering. There are various degrees and kinds of classifications within depression and postpartum depression. I never got diagnosed, but clinically I had all the symptoms of postpartum depression. I am a Buddhist practitioner, and I didn’t have time for therapy. I had the tools at my beck and call that I could access. Which was a very strong life philosophy that steered me in the right direction. Anjula Bedi said, “I felt the same things as were shown in the play. You feel like you are tied down. In my time, nobody knew about it. One of the things about postpartum is you are handed something without knowing anything about it. Every woman goes through this change of life which is mental as well as hormonal.”

Actor Mia Maelzer who is also a part of the play Baby Blues said, “I have grown as a woman through this play. I am more of a friend to my mother today than I was before the play. It has also helped me understand myself and my own anxiety when I played a mother on screen. Motherhood is very important.”

However in order to understand who Sukhlal is and why we should see his work, a little introspection is needed.

In my understanding of life and its ways, the primary thing that I have discovered is that it is indifferent towards individuals. It works on its own, never cares what it puts us through. However, seldom I get to see a part of life that leaves me speechless. It changes my entire conception and makes me question it altogether. Something like that happened to me when I discovered Sukhlal. An artist by soul and a cook by profession.

His story, as told by Mrs.Maite Deltiel, her employer:

“Sukhlal has been our cook for more than one year now. Living with us made him discover a new profession. Silently, he started to draw figures. l suppose it is my driver who is the boss who showed us his first sketch and then we provided the equipment regularly because immediately we found his drawings very interesting. They were always full of life, very expressive, always different, showing singular postures.”

According to Mrs. Maite Deltiel, in Sukhlal’s way of working we could see he has the main qualities necessary to become an artist : Working hard , Perseverance , Imagination , Liking to try different media, different supports and not afraid to undertake. However perhaps the best quality of Sukhlal is that he never seemed afraid of difficulty; instead he managed it with a kind of happy obstinacy.

According to Ms. Amrita Kochhar, gallerist of the Navya Naveli Gallery: “while discovering Sukhlal’s work and his journey We discovered the journey of creativity, passion and hard work of a young boy with no formal training in art. His journey is that of hard work, belief in oneself and the sheer desire to paint. Sukhlal’s love for art, the desire to paint a little everyday gave wings to his imagination and the art works created by him over one year are full of life and are joyful to see. The brilliant use of colour, the effortless strokes of the brush, the intricate detailing and story behind each work itself describes Sukhlal perspective and love for art and promises greater horizons and hope.”

When all is said and done, Sukhlal is an artist in his mind and soul, and artists like him should be celebrated because their stories tell us about a beautiful dream that broke the horizon of our mundane life.

01 April, 2023, Barmer, Rajasthan: Bharti Foundation extended its support to the Rajasthan Education Department for strengthening the implementation of No Bag Day initiative in the government schools in Barmer. Since July 2022, the Foundation has supported the efforts of state government in achieving the vision of joyful and meaningful learning, to bring out the creativity of every child in the schools and decreasing the burden of school bags on them.

In the Barmer district, as a part of review and recognition, top-performing blocks (Kalyanpur, Samdari, Siwana, Patodi and Barmer) along with 68 best-performing schools were felicitated recently for their remarkable contribution towards the success of No Bag day initiative.4,718 schools reported on activities that were organized every Saturday to improve life skills and subjective learning in students.

Under the initiative, learning resources and activities were developed which were shared with the teacher through monthly memos. The activities were based on themes like Rajasthan ko Pehchano, Bhasha Kaushal Vikas, Khelega Rajasthan BadhegaRajsthan, Main VaigyanikBanunga and Balsabha – ApnoKeSath. In Barmer, the expert teachers contributed towards designing of activities for two themes – Bal Sabha – ApnoKeSath and Khelega Rajasthan BadhegaRajsthan. The initiative aims at enabling children with important life skills such as teamwork, language development, creativity, scientific aptitude and problem-solving skills. With NEP 2020’s goal of aligning India’s education system with the aspirational goals of 21st century education, providing a holistic quality education has become more important than ever.

Bank of India increases Fixed Deposit Rates in Shubh Arambh Deposits of 501 Days Tenor

Mumbai, April 01, 2023: Bank of India, one of the largest Public Sector Banks in India, has revised interest rates upwards for special term deposit scheme viz. “Shubh Arambh Deposit” for 501 days with effect from 01st April, 2023 for deposits below Rs 2 crores. Bank is offering additional 0.15% to super senior citizens (80 years and above) across buckets of 6 months to 10 years. Following the revision, bank offers rate of interest rate of 7.80% in limited period special scheme to super senior citizen customers . It provides an interest rate of 7.15 % for general customers and 7.65% for other senior citizen customers in the special scheme. The rates of interest for other term deposits maturing in 7 days to 10 years is in the range of 3 % to 6.75 % for normal customers and upto 7.40% for super senior citizens. The revised interest rates are applicable for domestic, NRO and NRE deposits.
