Maker’s Factory: More than 150 Students from 10 government schools showcase 40 innovative prototypes

11th January 2023:- A weighing sensor to alert you when your gas cylinder might need a refill soon; a digital platform to make children aware of good and bad touch; or a game that nudges one to reduce pollution of ocean and rivers- these were just some of the creative and thoughtful prototypes built by 5th to 8th graders, that were on display at Maker’s Factory held at Tilak Nagar BMC School, this year.

Some of the key dignitaries present included Mr Ramanan Ramanathan, Director, First Mission Director, Atal Innovation Mission, Mr Anurag Pratap, CSR Lead, Capgemini, Mr Kailash Pagare, State Project Director, Samagra Shiksha, and Mr Ramkumar Rajendran, HOD Education Technology, IIT Bombay.

Maker’s Factory is organized by Pi Jam Foundation to mark another year of successful interventions across public schools in nurturing the love for computer sciences, helping them build 21-century skills including computational thinking, design thinking, and problem-solving skills, enabling them to leverage tech to solve problems from the real world around them.

Guests shared their surprise and satisfaction in seeing young students innovate and think along the lines of solving real problems around them. “It is always such a thrilling and heartening experience to see young enthusiastic students from schools talking excitedly about an idea conceived by them, eager to demonstrate energetically, while they passionately talk about 3D printing, IoT, cloud and web services, Raspberry Pi, and Arduino boards. The joy is more than doubled when you learn that these students are from government schools, especially when they include girl children. It shows enormous potential and transformative youth energy coursing through New India,” said Mr Ramanan Ramanathan, First Mission Director, AIM.

This event is a celebration as much as a platform for students to demonstrate what they learned and the prototypes they built using the same skills of innovation, problem-solving and creative thinking. Students showcase their solution prototypes and digital creations to real-world problems. Pi Jam Foundation works towards democratizing computer science education, making it accessible, innovative, and fun for kids in government schools.

“Three things are very important to me to understand when I am interacting with people, especially students- Can we become a problem-solving country rather than a country that is always looking at others to solve our problems? Secondly, can we fire up the spirit of innovation in our youth? All these millions of youth who will enter the workforce, we all have something precious: the demographic dividend of youth power, the youth energy coursing through the nation, which we see here (at Maker’s Factory)” said Mr Pratap.

Sharing about his interaction with the students he said, “I was talking with a group of students who had identified a major problem that they see at that young age, which is phone addiction and they offered a tech-based solution and other ideas to counter it. That’s the kind of energy I am talking about, which often does not get transformed.”

We were also joined by Mr Navin Shah, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development and Mr Rama Kamaraju, Advisor Aspirational Districts, Niti Aayog virtually, shared that such an exhibition of talent, skill and innovation from young Indians gave them plenty of hope for a bright digital-ready future for India.

“I was surprised to see 8th graders thinking along the lines of solving real-world problems around them. Some projects like the one on reducing water wastage were very impressive. We have about 3000 villages and I would be happy to implement the project throughout our villages,” said Mr Naveen Shah, Hon. Joint Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development.

Pi Jam Foundation’s vision of democratizing computer science education for students and teachers of BMC and PCMC (Pimpri Chinchwad Mahanagar Corporation) schools is supported by and in collaboration with Capgemini.
Mr Rama Kamaraju, Advisor for Aspirational Districts, Niti Ayog, expressed in his virtual address, “I was curious to know how they innovated, ideated, problem solved and implemented these interesting projects. I also wanted to know where they see their futures to be.”

Praising the Foundation’s work in his speech, Mr Kailash Pagare, State Project Director for Samagra Shiksha said, “I deeply appreciate the work Pi Jam Foundation is doing and I look forward to collaborating with them for projects in the coming years.

An event like Maker’s Factory shows the potential and what is possible when students are given the tools to build 21st-century skills. It is a place for all our stakeholders, be it, students, parents, teachers, government stakeholders, and corporate and NGO partners, to come together and experience a space that is a result of all of us converging in support of the collective CS vision for our children.

About The Released Child

Creative freedom being explored to the hilt? To the point that in his works Hemraj seems to assert the child inside unabashedly! Can that be seen as art?

Picasso somewhere stated, “It took me three years to paint like Raffle but a lifetime to paint like a child.”
It seems that through his peek-a-boo strokes Hemraj is playing between the dark patchy one’s hiding partially behind the transparent roller strokes that leave it partially mystified and the rest beckoning towards itself to be unearthed. Synonymous with the dynamics of life: playing peek-a-boo with the ever-lifting veil to be overtaken by renewed and more subtle one’s!
Then those thick dots effectively consciously and simultaneously unconsciously placing themselves again in a typical childlike manner declare Hemraj’s boldness of experimentation with an unhesitant demeanor.

If art is a means to experience freedom and express freedom, Hemraj must be leaping in that very zone. For there is bold impudence, nerve and sassiness of a child in there. With adamance and strong-headedness, the child in him at play, in that very exploration verging on to the mystery that is louder in some than others that are pure leisure!

Union Budget 2023-24 quotes by Akhil Jain, Executive Director, MADAME

Akhil Jain, Executive Director, MADAME

1. Ease of Doing Business: A few years ago, the Government proposed to formulate a “National Retail Trade Policy”. The Union Minister of Commerce & Industry informed in the Rajya Sabha on 23/09/2020 that Stakeholder consultations are being held in this regard. The Government had also set up a National Traders’ Welfare Board with the objectives of the welfare of traders and their employees, simplification of the acts and rules applicable to traders, reduction of the compliance burden and improvement in access to funds for traders. The action on formulating the “National Retail Trade Policy” should be expedited to provide the much-needed “Ease of Doing Business” to the fashion retail industry.

2. Goods and Services Tax:

(a) Consumer spending on fashion apparel falls under the ‘discretionary spending’ category. GST @ 12% on fashion apparel is causing high costs for end-consumers. Due to inflationary pressures, the discretionary spending of consumers is going down. GST on all apparel should be fixed at a standard rate of 5% to give a much-needed fillip to the fashion retail industry.

(b) Most of the inputs, services and capital goods required by the retail industry attract a higher rate of GST (mostly 18%), while the output rate of GST is lower. This results in an unutilised input tax credit of GST causing blockage of working capital and increased cost of operations. The Government should amend the formula for calculating refunds under the inverted duty structure category in order to allow unrestricted refunds of unutilised GST on services as well as on capital goods.

3. Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS): The retail industry is awaiting the re-introduction of TUFS to reduce its cost of technology upgradation.

4. Production-linked incentive scheme (PLI): PLI for the garments industry should be announced soon in which MSMEs are also able to participate.

Microsoft’s January 2023 Patch Tuesday Addresses 98 CVEs

Satnam
Satnam Narang_Staff Research Engineer_Tenable

“This month, Microsoft addressed two zero-day vulnerabilities, including one exploited in the wild.

“CVE-2023-21674 is an elevation of privilege vulnerability in the Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call (ALPC), which facilitates interprocess communication for Windows operating system components. Microsoft says that this flaw has been exploited in the wild as a zero day.

“Though details about the flaw were not available at the time Microsoft published its advisory on Patch Tuesday, it appears this was likely chained together with a vulnerability in a Chromium-based browser such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge in order to break out of a browser’s sandbox and gain full system access.

“Vulnerabilities like CVE-2023-21674 are typically the work of advanced persistent threat (APT) groups as part of targeted attacks. The likelihood of future widespread exploitation of an exploit chain like this is limited due to auto-update functionality used to patch browsers.

“The interest by researchers and attackers alike in Windows Print Spooler persists due to its ubiquity on Windows systems. Since PrintNightmare was disclosed in the summer of 2021, we have seen a steady stream of vulnerabilities being reported in Print Spooler almost monthly. This month, Microsoft patched three Windows Print Spooler vulnerabilities.. All three received the same CVSSv3 score and are less likely to be exploited.

“However, it’s interesting to note that CVE-2023-21678 was disclosed to Microsoft by the National Security Agency. This is a continuation of a trend observed last year, where the NSA disclosed three vulnerabilities in Windows Print Spooler, beginning with CVE-2022-29104 and CVE-2022-29132 in May 2022 to CVE-2022-38028 in October 2022.” –Satnam Narang, Sr. Staff Research Engineer at Tenable
