WazirX Heralds Crypto Security With Its 3rd Edition Transparency Report

November 29, 2022: In its continued effort to provide transparency to users and safeguard their assets, we have launched the third edition of our Transparency Report. The developments covered in the report occurred between April 2022 and September 2022. The report highlights the company’s initiatives in boosting awareness about Web3, assisting law enforcement in identifying bad actors and implementing a foolproof onboarding process to ensure the security of users. We have also outlined some common trends observed in Crypto scams over this time period which users should be aware of.

The exchange maintained its record of a 100% compliance rate for all 828 requests received from Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA). The requests were received against a total of 10Mn transactions during this period. WazirX also proactively identified accounts with suspicious activities with the help of third-party platforms and shared the information with the Financial Investigation Unit (FIU-IND). Our average turnaround time to respond to requests was 18 mins for the first cut response. With the help of our round-the-clock available legal support teams and monitoring infrastructure, we were able to continue assisting the LEAs to the best of our abilities.

Here are some of the major findings:

● Only 0.008% of all transactions during this period were reported/investigated by LEAs

● Recorded an improvement in average turnaround time at 18 minutes for the first cut of the response to LEA, although the recommended duration is 48 to 72 hours, as per IT Act, 2000

● Out of 828 queries received, 764 were by Indian Law Enforcement Agencies, whereas the Foreign LEAs made 64 requests

● The most number of requests came in from regulators and law enforcement agencies in Maharashtra

● Illegal fund transfers, Crypto scams, cheating, and forgery were the most common types of crimes reported, resembling scams in the Traditional Financial sector

● 700+ accounts were blocked during this period. The majority of them were due to requests that came in from users

“We still have some way to go to prevent security risks in Crypto. The level of awareness around Crypto needs to extend to its ill uses too. Only then can mainstream adoption take place in an environment of trust. We will continue our efforts to educate Indians about Crypto, and comply with regulators to ensure any form of fraud with virtual digital assets is tackled. ” Nischal Shetty, CEO, and Founder, WazirX

As per the report, some of the key cases that WazirX assisted law enforcement (Indian and Foreign) in are:

– In a recent case, a Bitcoin racket being run from Delhi came to the notice of the CBI on being alerted by the Austrian police. Imposters posed as Europol officers and other law enforcement agencies to tell their victims that their identities had been stolen and used for narcotics businesses. The criminals would target foreign nationals for the same. WazirX’s legal team, with assistance from Chainalysis, collaborated with the CBI on this case to block the operation. They identified the accounts which were being used to carry on this racket and blocked the withdrawal of the assets that were gained from the criminal proceedings.

– In one of the first Disproportionate asset cases involving Crypto, WazirX helped Bhubaneswar Police identify the Crypto accounts of an engineer who did not reveal his investments in Digital Assets. Upon scrutiny by the team, it was discovered that he had 50-odd Crypto wallets and an investment worth Rs. 2 crores.

– In another incident, the legal team assisted the Kolkata police in nabbing some criminals who were defrauding people through a mobile gaming platform. In this case, a large sum of money was collected from the public via the platform called e-nuggets. The culprits then disabled the withdrawal of money and also removed all data from the app. WazirX helped ED freeze crypto assets worth Rs 12.83 Crores.

– A few months ago, a group of criminals from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, created an elaborate fake trading app to lure customers and dupe them of huge sums of money. WazirX assisted the Ghaziabad Police in real-time in identifying the identities that were linked to the culprits which led to their arrest.

– In Bandra, Mumbai, and Maharashtra, the WazirX team helped identify wallets linked to Chinese loan apps which were used to dupe people through fraudulent transactions. The team worked closely with the law enforcement agency to identify the accused and block their operations using Crypto. WazirX cooperated with the investigators by providing them with all the necessary details, information, and documents of the alleged accused companies who used the WazirX platform. After an in-depth internal investigation, WazirX noticed that most of the users whose information was sought by ED were already identified as suspicious by WazirX internally and were blocked in 2020-2021. Due to the active cooperation extended by WazirX and active Anti-money laundering (AML) checks, suspected users were identified.

In terms of the nature of scams, here’s what the percentage looked like for each category:

WazirX Heralds Crypto Security With Its 3rd Edition Transparency Report

Some of the Indian and Foreign Law Enforcement Agencies that WazirX has worked with during this period are the National Investigation Agency, Enforcement Directorate, State Cyber Crime Cells, Intelligence Fusion & Strategic Ops (IFSO) Delhi, Special Task Force, Narcotics Control Bureau, Bhopal Police, Crime Branch, and CID, Toronto Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), German Police Agencies, United Kingdom Police, Interpol, Dutch Police, Austrian Police, Europol, etc.

WazirX has continued its association with TRM Labs, a virtual digital asset compliance platform, to sustain and scale up its efforts of security. It also collaborated with Chainalysis, a platform to analyze blockchain data. WazirX also joined hands with other industry players in the country to form a new crypto advocacy group called Bharat Web3 Association (BWA).

WazirX launched a course on Blockchain Technology to educate individuals. This was in collaboration with Gurukula Kangri in Haridwar, a deemed-to-be university, as per the University Grants Commission (UGC). Since its initiation, the course has seen more than 20,000 enrolments. We recently awarded the completion certificate to 400+ individuals. 7.4% of them were females. Uttar Pradesh saw the highest number of enrolments in the program (25.4%) among all participating states.

WazirX also modified the procedure to raise a Law Enforcement request. To submit a Law Enforcement request under relevant provisions of law, the requester must be a law enforcement agent or government official authorized to:

Gather evidence in connection with an investigation, or
Make a formal law enforcement request.

Many men ignore the symptoms of prostate cancer due to male ego

By: Dr S K Pal, Urologist, Apollo Spectra Delhi, Nehru Enclave

Delhi – Prostate cancer is one of the common cancers that men tend to suffer from. Though, ones suffering from prostate cancer may rarely showcase any symptoms at an early stage. But there are a few red flags that you need not miss, and seek immediate medical attention once you notice these symptoms. Read on to know more about these signals and seek timely intervention.

The prostate is a small walnut sized gland situated in the pelvic region of a man next to the bladder. Are you aware? Your prostate is known to carry out a lot of important functions like producing the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports your sperm. Yes, you have heard it right! Prostate cancer is one of the commonest cancers of male populations, and many cases go unrecognized till late stage, because it hardly produces significant symptoms till it has extensively spread to the bones or other organs of the body. This happens due to the lack of awareness, tendency to ignore minor symptoms, self-denial due to male ego and avoidance of annual health check-ups till serious problems start and cause significant disturbances in passing urine. Prostate cancer originates in the prostate, and grows slowly but tends to spread rapidly. The causes of this type of cancer are not known yet, but its genetic predisposition has been established. Occurrence of prostate cancer is ten times more common in those men, in whom a male member in the family tree has suffered from this cancer as compared to the normal population. Hence, awareness and early diagnosis is key to tackle it.

Here are some of the warning signs of this notorious cancer that you shouldn’t miss

A painful or burning sensation while urination or ejaculation: Do you tend to avoid passing urine owing to pain down there? Then, you should stop doing so and consult your urologist. Did you know? Painful urination or ejaculation is one of the prominent signs and requires immediate attention.

Frequent urination mostly during the night: If you happen to make frequent trips to the bathroom during the night then be alert. It can be just an age-related enlargement of Prostate gland or even a prostate cancer. Just a simple blood test of measuring serum PSA will differentiate between them.

Difficulty stopping or starting urination: This is another worrisome sign.

Blood in urine or semen: If you notice blood in the urine or semen then just go to your urologist to rule out any possibility of prostate cancer.

Other symptoms of this cancer include sudden retention and total inability to pass urine, loss of bladder control, swelling in the pelvic region, and bone pain and easy fractures of the bone with minor injuries or otherwise.

Diabetes Awareness Month Special Article

By Dr. SaptorshiMajumdar MBBS, MD-Ophthalmology (AIIMS)
Department of Vitreo Retinal Services, Disha Eye Hospitals, Kolkata

Diabetes is known to be a silent killer and affects a number organs of the human body, including the eyes. A diabetic eye disease is a group of medical conditions that can affect people with diabetes. Cataract, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Glaucoma are some of the few eye diseases that may affect a diabetic individual during the course of his life.

Cataract:
A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Cataracts cause half of all cases of blindness and thirty-three percent of visual impairment worldwide. Cataracts are one of the earliest complications of diabetes mellitus and one of the most common causes of visual impairments in these subjects.

Symptoms of Cataracts:

  • ➢ Clouded, blurred or dim vision
➢ Increasing difficulty with vision at night
➢ Sensitivity to light and glare
➢ Need for brighter light for reading and other activities
    ➢ Seeing “halos” around lights
➢ Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription
➢ Fading or yellowing of colors
➢ Double vision in a single eye
➢ Need for frequent change in prescription glasses

Prevention:
Although there is significant speculation over whether cataracts can be prevented at all, a number of studies have suggested that certain habits may reduce the risk factors. They are:

  • ➢ Have regular eye examinations which can help detect cataracts and other eye problems at their earliest stages
    ➢ Quit smoking
    ➢ Manage other health problems
➢ Choose a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables
    ➢ Wear sunglasses
    ➢ Reduce alcohol use
➢ Adequate intake of antioxidants such as Vitamin A, C, and E
    ➢ Manage UVB exposure
➢ Take diabetes medicines as prescribed by the Doctor regularly

Diabetic Retinopathy:
Diabetic retinopathy, also known by the name of diabetic eye disease, affecting almost up to eighty percent of the population who have had diabetes for over twenty years is a medical condition concerning the retina, where damage is caused to the same as a result of complications of diabetes mellitus. The condition is a result of blood vessel damage in the retina and is reportedly the leading cause of blindness.

Diabetic retinopathy can be of two types: the first is non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy which is usually the milder and mostly the symptomless form while proliferative diabetic retinopathy is the more advanced and serious stage with the growth of excess and abnormal blood vessels in the retina, causing the retina to leak fluid and cause bleeding inside the eye.

Symptoms Of Diabetic Retinopathy:
Typically presenting almost no symptoms at the early stage, the symptoms of this condition affecting both the eyes of the individual become noticeable at the more advanced stage with sudden and complete loss of vision being the only detectable symptom in certain cases. Some other symptoms include:

  • ➢ Blurry vision
    ➢ Weakened color vision
    ➢ Poor nighttime vision
➢ Streaks or patches impairing the individual’s vision

Causes And Risk Factors:
Diabetic retinopathy usually affects those who have been affected by diabetes (diagnosed or undiagnosed) for a significant number of years. However, the risk of developing this condition is greater in cases of High blood sugar levels, High blood pressure, High cholesterol, Pregnancy & Smoking.

In the advanced stage of this condition, the blood vessels can be completely blocked, leading the eye to then produce excess and abnormal blood vessels and these new vessels break easily and leak fluid causing blurry patches of vision. This bleeding, on occasion, may be accompanied by tractional forces that can separate the retina and the eye, leading to a detached retina. As symptoms develop, a person with Diabetic retinopathy becomes increasingly likely to experience complete vision loss.

Prevention:
Although one cannot prevent diabetic retinopathy completely as for the majority of people with diabetes, diabetic retinopathy is an almost inevitable consequence. For a diabetic person the risks of developing the advanced stages can be reduced by doing the following:

  • ➢ Frequent Eye Check-Ups
  • ➢ Managing diabetes
➢ Monitoring of blood sugar level
➢ Taking a glycosylated hemoglobin test with the goal of A1C is below 7%
➢ Quitting the use of tobacco
➢ Paying close attention to vision changes

Glaucoma:
Glaucoma is a medical condition that affects the optic nerve of an individual’s eyes and gets worse over time building up pressure inside one’s eyes. It is often considered inherited and may not show up until later in life. Glaucoma is of two types: open-angle which is the most common type and angle-closure which is a medical emergency and must be treated immediately.

If one is above the age of forty and has a family history of the disease, a complete eye exam is recommended. Further, if the person concerned is diabetic or has a family history of glaucoma, they should go for more often checkups.

Symptoms:
Most people with glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain. Regular eye check-ups can help in getting diagnosed and treated at the earliest.

The two most common types of Glaucoma: open-angle and angle-closure have completely different symptoms.

Symptoms of open-angle are:

  • ➢ Slow or peripheral loss of vision, mostly in both eyes
➢ Tunnel vision in the advanced stages

Symptoms of angle closure are

  • ➢ Severe eye pain
  • ➢ Nausea and vomiting (accompanying the severe eye pain)
➢ Sudden onset of visual disturbance, often in low light
    ➢ Blurred vision
    ➢ Halos around lights
    ➢ Reddening of the eye

Prevention:
Although there is no way to prevent Glaucoma, having it diagnosed early means it can be treated better and more effectively. Medical experts also recommend a healthy lifestyle that incorporates regular exercise and a nutritious diet.

Some ways by which Glaucoma may be prevented are:

  • ➢ Maintaining a healthy weight.
  • ➢ Keeping blood pressure at a normal level and controlling other medical conditions.
    ➢ Not smoking
➢ Limiting caffeine intake to moderate levels, because some evidence suggests that high amounts of caffeine may increase eye pressure.
➢ Trying to exercise daily by doing physical activities such as walking, swimming, or working in the yard.
➢ Get regular, comprehensive eye exams, and consult your doctor if you notice changes in your vision.

Thus, diabetes can affect a person’s sight in an adverse manner and so it is important that people who are diabetic plan regular checkups. As diabetes can cause damage to one’s eyes over time and may even lead to blindness, one must take steps to prevent diabetic eye disease or at least keep it from getting worse.
