Investing in the stock market is more important than ever amid rising inflation

Investing in the share market during an inflationary period can boost corporate profits, especially when companies pass on higher input costs to customers through price hikes. It also means that for investors it is more important than ever to start putting their long-term savings in the stock market.

One of the most effective ways to combat inflation is to maintain a well-diversified and fully invested portfolio. In the long run, money invested in stocks tends to outpace inflation, whereas positions in real estate, commodities, and so on can only serve as additional diversification. Cash on the sidelines will always lose value, while long-term bonds will suffer if interest rates begin to rise.

In the long run, investing in equities can prove to be a good way to outrun inflation. For example, the average annual return of NIFTY for 2021 is 24.12%, higher than the 6.71% annual inflation seen recently.

Investing in any securities having greater returns than the inflation rates can help the money to grow rather than depreciating its value. Investments like stocks, FD, and bonds can help in the short to medium term whereas, gold and Real Estate can be in the long term.

Investing in precious metals can also add some diversification to your portfolio if it mainly consists of stocks and bonds. Gold is not the best option when it comes to short-term inflation but is sustainable during long-term inflation.

On the other hand, investing in commercial real estate during inflation not only protects you against inflation but also increases the value of your assets during inflation. Successful businesses during inflation are those that you purchase once and then don’t have to continue making capital investments afterward, whereas you must prevent any business that necessitates a large capital investment.

During periods of inflation, value stocks outperform growth stocks. Shares with a higher intrinsic value than their current trading price are considered value stocks. They are typically shares of mature, well-established companies with strong current free cash flows that may decline over time.

Companies with high earnings relative to their current share price are considered value stocks. They are also known for having strong cash flows, which investors value when prices are rising. During inflationary periods, shares with higher current cash flows are more valuable than growth stocks with longer-term returns.

Inflation-indexed bonds and Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) tend to increase their returns with inflationary pressures hence, providing great investment options to long-term investors. Tips also pay fixed interest rates twice a year.

Hence, look for good businesses with low capital requirements and companies that raise prices during higher inflation periods, proactively structure your portfolio, and include smart positions in asset classes that minimize the effects of inflation.

Have a flexible budget when building your portfolio so that inflation cannot dominate your portfolio design. It is always advised to have calculated moves in a volatile market as the risk exposure is higher than at normal times. During times of inflation, always remember that the government takes measures against it so have a foresighted investing structure ready.

Tenable Announces New Research Alliance Program for Vulnerability Intelligence Sharing

New Delhi, India (October 14, 2022) — Tenable®, the Exposure Management company, today announced the creation of its new Tenable Research Alliance Program to share vulnerability information prior to public disclosure. This new intelligence sharing initiative aims to reduce the window of opportunity threat actors have to exploit newly-disclosed vulnerabilities, allowing security teams and system administrators to address attack paths before hackers can take advantage. AlmaLinux, Canonical, CIQ, GreyNoise and TuxCare [the new brand name for CloudLinux Enterprise services] are the five inaugural members of this growing network.

When a new vulnerability is disclosed, organisations are in a race against cyber attackers. Those tasked with securing the organisation must work to identify if the flaw exists within their infrastructure, determine the risk it poses by identifying the attack paths it introduces, prioritise those weaknesses that pose the greatest threat, before either updating the software where a patch is available or taking mitigating action when this is not immediately feasible. This takes time and leaves the organisation exposed. In tandem, threat actors will be scanning for the vulnerability and developing ways to weaponise the flaw.

Establishing a framework for a network of technology partners to share vulnerability details in accordance with Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure (CVD) best practices makes it more likely that software scripts (plugins) that find instances of the flaw can be developed, tested and deployed to coincide with public disclosure announcements. This enables organisations to assess and remediate their environments on day zero. This means those tasked with vulnerability management don’t just have the same intelligence as threat actors, but are armed to take action to find and fix flaws before an attacker can exploit them.

“Whenever a vulnerability is disclosed the dinner bell sounds for good and bad actors alike, meaning organisations are already on their back foot,” explains Robert Huber, chief security officer and head of research, Tenable. “We know threat actors are monitoring disclosure programs in the same way we are, looking for newly announced vulnerabilities, studying all available information such as proof of concepts, but they’re looking to utilise the flaw. By giving our customers the tools to address these weaknesses when they’re publicly announced, we reduce that intelligence gap and hand the advantage back to the good guys.”

“Our customers want to make sure they can continue using Nessus to detect outdated packages on AlmaLinux OS Systems. Joining the Tenable Research Alliance provides an excellent way for Tenable and AlmaLinux to work together to make it possible,” said Jack Aboutboul, community manager for AlmaLinux. “Security is a key component of building resilient internet infrastructure, and this step helps strengthen AlmaLinux as the CentOS alternative of choice.”

“Ubuntu enables secure open source consumption across the whole enterprise compute spectrum,” said Lech Sandecki, Ubuntu product manager, Canonical. “As the publisher of Ubuntu, Canonical is proud to join the Tenable Research Alliance Program, continuing our collaboration in order to make open source security even more actionable, timely and accurate.”

“CIQ, the founding sponsor and partner of Rocky Linux, is excited to demonstrate our commitment to open source security by joining Tenable’s Research Alliance Program,” said Gregory Kurtzer, CEO of CIQ and founder of Rocky Linux, Apptainer/Singularity, and Warewulf. “We look forward to working with Tenable and the Rocky Linux open source community to create a more secure software supply chain.”

“We are excited to partner with Tenable in the Research Alliance Partnership,” said Nate Thai, director of research, GreyNoise. “The combination of Tenable vulnerability data, with the real-time mass exploit awareness that GreyNoise provides, will help our mutual customers, as well as industry partners, respond faster and more accurately to newly-emerging vulnerabilities.”

“At TuxCare, we live patch a large number of vulnerabilities for the Linux kernel without rebooting. We have joined the Tenable Research Alliance to more closely collaborate with the Nessus team to correctly diagnose which vulnerabilities have been live patched, and which are yet to be patched,” said Igor Seletskiy, CEO and Founder of TuxCare. “This will directly benefit Linux administrators, strengthening their access to actionable information, and building a stronger security infrastructure.”

Capgemini’s Annual World Energy Markets Observatory, 2022

New Delhi, October 14, 2022 – Capgemini has published the 24th edition of its annual World Energy Markets Observatory (WEMO), created in partnership with De Pardieu Brocas Maffei, Vaasa ETT and Enerdata. According to the report, there is an urgency to create balance between two equally important imperatives – the security of affordable energy supply and the fight against climate change. This year’s WEMO explores how achieving this balance is possible through the combination of short-term action and long-term decisions on the reform of the energy market design, on the sustainability of energy supplies, and on favourable financing conditions for long term green investments.

Key observations and recommendations from the report include:

Addressing the energy crisis with energy reduction and gas storage in the short-term

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the long-term risk represented by European dependence on Russian gas has reached a breaking point. Dependence on Russian gas in Europe, especially in Germany, has compounded over the last two decades through a reduction of European gas production and an increase in gas consumption. This has been driven further still by the need to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions to advance Net Zero ambitions, closure of nuclear plants following the Fukushima incident and other economic considerations.

Presently with the forced withdrawal from Russian gas in Europe, the security of gas supply over the coming winter will depend on three factors: the filling of capacity storage facilities (EU legislation has dictated that gas storage sites must be filled to at least 80% of their capacity by November 1, 2022, including the Rehden facility); identifying gas import flows[1]; and most importantly the effectiveness of energy reduction campaigns. Incentives for energy savings, already launched in many European countries, have the potential to trigger meaningful change.

Avoiding the renewables paradox in the mid-to-long-term

Under new EU plans to accelerate the rollout of renewables to achieve independence from Russian supply and electrification of the economy, an additional €210 billion will be needed for energy investment between now and 2027. At present, wind and solar technologies are the most promising solutions[2].

According to Colette Lewiner, Energy and Utilities Senior Advisor at Capgemini: “A careful balance needs to be struck. This means making the right bets for short-term solutions like solar and wind, while for the longer term building third generation large nuclear plants or SMRs[3] in countries that can develop such programs. We need to be realistic about emerging solutions and the impact they can deliver. For instance, for economic and technical reasons, hydrogen is not on track to fulfil its net zero role by the mid-century. Therefore, Green Hydrogen should be reserved for industries where CO2 is difficult to abate.”

Of the renewable solutions available, solar has significant growth potential because of advances with innovative materials and methods to maximize solar energy such as bifacial cells, integrated lenses, and reverse solar panels, which can generate electricity at night. Solar sites are also more palatable to local communities when compared with wind. However, currently 75% of all Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels come into the EU from China, leading, over the last decade, to the decline of EU domestic PV production. Europe must be careful not to replace Russian gas dependency by a dependency on players like China for key energy transition components like PV panels, rare earth and rare metals, cites the Observatory. European governments should create the right technical, financial, and regulatory conditions to develop domestic high end critical industries like PV panel and batteries production to regain sovereignty. In addition, bold electricity market reform should be agreed upon to encourage low-carbon generation investments.

Meanwhile, nuclear power is undergoing a renaissance, recognized as a domestic energy source central to the decarbonization of electricity and stability of the electricity grid, and in the short-term countries like Germany and Belgium should keep existing reactors open. According to the report, in the mid-term, governments in the UK, US, Japan, EU, and China should continue to build nuclear plants, while long-term remuneration systems for nuclear electricity should be put in place to encourage private players to invest in this industry.

The energy crisis has also triggered a delay to the closure of coal, which is increasing CO2 emissions. Carbon Capture Usage and Storage (CCUS) technologies are an essential tool for managing these emissions and implementation and investment in CCUS plants must be accelerated. In 2021, 97 new CCUS operating plants were announced; the US and Europe account for three-quarters of all projects in development. Investment must continue as Carbon Capture capacity needs to increase by 2030 to align with a pathway to net zero by 2050; in 2021 annual carbon capacity having only reached 40 MtCO2.

Doubling down on climate action

The geopolitical disruption has reinforced the need in Europe to develop domestic energies like renewables, and nuclear for those countries that can develop such programs. Though the use of coal has increased and GHG emissions in 2022 and 2023 are likely to be higher than in 2021, there are two factors that could counteract its impact. First, the effectiveness of energy conservation could deliver significant impact on GLG emissions. Secondly, the global economic slowdowns of H2 2022 are likely to lower energy consumption and GHG correlated emissions.

Despite these trends the political will to combat climate change is still present and growing from the largest global emitters, evidenced by packages from the EU like Fit for 55 and REPowerEU, the $430 billion Inflation Reduction Act from the Biden administration, and updated national climate plans from the likes of India.

James Forrest, Global Energy and Utilities Industry Leader at Capgemini, says: “Though energy security has been neglected in favor of the fight against climate change in recent years, the current crisis provides an opportunity for global energy markets and governments to address the two issues concurrently. By activating solutions like energy reduction, solar, and wind in the short-term and continuing to unlock the biggest climate packages in history we can achieve meaningful progress between these equally important imperatives.”

The World Energy Markets Observatory (WEMO) is an annual publication by Capgemini that tracks the development and transformation of electricity and gas markets in Europe, North America, Australia, Southeast Asia, India, and China. The 24th edition focuses on the triggers and impact of several successive energy crises including Russia-Ukraine crisis, and the consequences of the increase in inflation, most notably for Europe. As in previous years, the latest edition of WEMO also includes in-depth coverage of: commodities markets, climate change and regulatory policies; energy transition, and advances in clean technologies; infrastructure and adequacy of supply; supply and end customers; financials; and the impact of the crises on Utilities and Oil & Gas companies.

The report, which is drafted mainly from public data combined with Capgemini’s expertise in the energy sector, refers to data from 2021 and the first half of 2022. Special expertise on regulation and customer behavior, as well as markets’ data has been provided by research teams at De Pardieu Brocas Maffei, VaasaETT and Enerdata.
