UNDP partners with Arya.ag and Friends of Women’s World Banking to improve incomes of 10,000 households

Bangalore, October 13, 2022: UNDP has selected Arya.ag and Friends of Women’s World Banking, India (FWWB India) as partners for implementing enterprise promotion and value chain interventions in agriculture and allied activities. The partnership aims to create a cadre of community resource persons for mentoring and supporting entrepreneurs and promoting individual and group enterprises by December 2023. The blueprint of Project Excel includes building a team of sourcing managers to implement value chain interventions and establish market and credit linkages through collectivization. As part of this partnership, Arya.ag will build on farmers’ collectives to effectively manage the post-harvest process and develop the agriculture value chain of the producer group.

Arya.ag will provide its platform for the farmer collectives and FPOs to showcase their produce on its marketplace. Farmers will benefit from the economies of scale and synergies provided by the company’s vast, integrated ecosystem of services, including quality inputs, commercial support, farm advisory and management tools, affordable credit, and capacity building. Through collectivization, they will help farmers in the villages establish market and credit linkages. FPOs, who have farmers as the shareholders, would leverage economies of scale, reducing production costs and enhancing farmers’ incomes. Arya.ag’s dedicated agritech initiatives solve traceability and transparency issues and give quality assurance for seamless commodity commerce.

FWWB India will focus on the development of entrepreneurship among villagers. It will support youth and women’s economic empowerment through setting up demand-driven micro and nano enterprises. This partnership is to create a conducive business environment with end-to-end solutions consisting of training and technical support, capital and market linkages, and skill enhancement support, empowering women and ensuring a sustainable income at the individual and collective level.

The overall aim of this project is to develop the potential of the rural and semi-urban communities and provide them with the opportunities to enhance their livelihoods in sectors like agriculture, dairy, poultry, handloom, goat rearing and handicraft, etc. The project will also help build their managerial capabilities and provide stronger market linkages.

Arya.ag and FWWB India will work extensively to strengthen agri value chain and build an entrepreneurship ecosystem. They will enable deeper engagements with knowledge partners that positively impact the livelihoods of millions of small farmers and women from the under-served communities of Dwarka Devbhumi and increase their income.

Digitization will result in desirable attributes in the healthcare system: CEO, National Health Authority

FICCI HEAL

NEW DELHI, 13 October 2022: Accentuating the importance of healthcare digitization, Dr. R S Sharma, CEO, of the National Health Authority yesterday said that the initiative can bring several desirable attributes to the healthcare system.

Addressing the FICCI HEAL 2022 (concluding day) Dr. Sharma said, “Digitization will result in a number of desirable attributes in the healthcare sector. It will make health provisions more affordable and accessible and improve the quality as well.”

Dr. Harsha Rajaram, Co-Chair, of the FICCI Digital Health Task Force; Chief Operating Officer, of Aster Telehealth- India & GCC lauded the initiatives taken by the government in creating a conducive ecosystem for promoting digital health. “Digital health would help to bridge the gap in the healthcare system, and ensure both affordability and accessibility,” he added. FICCI has been working with the government and industry members, since 2012, on the building blocks for digitization, including Electronic Health Record Standards and National Health Stack.

Discussing the role of technology in the healthcare sector, Mr. Dhruv Sukhrani, Partner, Bain & Company India stated, “We have seen pre-Covid, Covid times and post-Covid times; all the 3 phases were different and health tech was born during this time. We believe that Covid has accelerated the shift towards digital models of care.” He added that from the behavioral perspective, both doctors and patients are seeing a move toward digitization.

Speaking on the ‘Cost Quality Conundrum’, Dr. Shankar Prinja, Executive Director (HP&QA), National Health Authority underscored the initiatives taken by the central government to control healthcare costs. “We have gone a long way since the time the health benefits package was first conceived under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister. Today we have tried developing a strong database of healthcare costs. This year we announced a new health package where we have increased the prices of 800+ packages under PMJAY,” he added.

Dr. YP Bhatia, Managing Director, Astron Hospital & Healthcare Consultant said, “I believe one subject is missing in our country, i.e. health economics. There has to be a comprehensive system through which the cost of quality can be worked on.”

Dr. Atul Kochhar, the CEO, of NABH, said, “India is getting serious about healthcare. We are a young population, and this young population spends more on healthcare. They are more aware and understand the need to invest in healthcare.”

Earlier during the day, acknowledging the rapid evolution of the healthcare sector across the globe, Dr. Manohar Agnani, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare said that India can serve the global community by strengthening the healthcare system, but for that, it needs to focus on quality.

“We are one of the youngest nations, which provides us with the opportunity to serve the global community. But to do that we need to focus on quality. We have excellent service providers and hospitals, both in the public and private sectors of the country,” added Dr. Agnani.

Mr. Lav Agarwal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, GoI while highlighting the government initiatives on making India a global healthcare hub said, “Under Heal in India initiative, the government aims at ensuring value-based healthcare where if the patient from one country does not have treatment in their country, they can come and travel to our county and avail treatment. The Heal by India initiative talks about health workforce mobility where the Indian workforce can be a brand ambassador for India across the world.”

Sharing his thoughts on the strengthening of the healthcare workforce, Dr. Narottam Puri, Principal Advisor-QCI; Board Member & Former Chairman- NABH; Advisor- FICCI Health Services; Advisor- Medical Operations, Fortis Healthcare Ltd. said, “If the public and private sectors are to work together, the two have to find a common ground. PPPs have been happening, but we need to improve them, for that Communication is important. We need to be supportive and not critical. We need to find solutions.”

During the Session on ‘Making Cancer Care accessible and affordable, Mr. Raj Gore, Co-Chair of, the FICCI Task Force on Cancer Care and CEO, of Healthcare Global Enterprises Limited (HCG), said, “To address the dual challenge of rising incidents and sub-optimal mortality to the ratio of the incident, the country must focus on large-scale awareness campaigns on risk factors, symptoms, screening & treating options, effective prevention, alcohol, obesity, improved screening projects & avoiding unnecessary stigma attached to the disease.”

Dr. Rajendra Badwe, Director, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai suggested that for Cervical cancer, good screening mortality either VIA or Pap smear should be good enough, but keep in mind- reducing the cost and increasing the efficacy without increasing the numbers.

Dr. Kaushal Kalra, HoD- Oncology, Safdarjung Hospital stressed the importance of making robotic-assisted surgery more affordable. “We need training for robotic surgery, new technology used in therapies costs a lot as they are newly invented medications. The lower and middle classes can’t afford it,” he said.

Expressing his views on the high cost of robotic-assisted surgery, Mr. Mandeep Singh Kumar, VP and GM, Intuitive India suggested that in 2019, IRDA included robotics surgeries in the health insurance that is also included in hospitals today. “We have also worked with insurance companies and many of them now have robotics in their coverage. We partnered with hospitals to see how we can have easy access to technology and jointly we were able to solve the problem,” he added.

The three-day FICCI HEAL 2022 organized on the theme ‘Healthcare Transformation: Driving India’s Economic Growth’ was inaugurated by Mr. Jagdeep Dhankhar, Hon’ble Vice President of India. The 14th edition of FICCI Healthcare Excellence Awards 2022 was presented by Ms. Smriti Zubin Irani, Minister of Women & Child Development and Minority Affairs, GoI. The conference also featured the da Vinci Xi surgical system of Intuitive, showcasing advanced robotic surgical technologies.

Forescout Researchers Reveal the Riskiest IT, IoT, OT and IoMT Devices in Enterprise Networks, Popular Trends, and Mitigation Techniques

Forescout Researchers Reveal the Riskiest IT, IoT, OT and IoMT Devices in Enterprise Networks, Popular Trends, and Mitigation Techniques

India, October 13, 2022: Forescout Technologies, the global leader in automated cybersecurity, recently analyzed the various evolving complexity of the riskiest devices landscape in 2022. The report includes Vedere Labs’ findings analyzing millions of devices in Forescout’s Device Cloud using the Forescout Continuum Platform’s new multifactor risk scoring methodology.

To get a dataset representative of the current device landscape in enterprise networks, Vedere Labs analyzed device data between January 1 and April 30 in Forescout’s Device Cloud, one of the world’s largest repositories of connected enterprise device data including IT, OT, IoT, and IoMT. The report also covers the three factors on the basis of which the risk of a device is calculated:

  • Configuration considers the number and severity of vulnerabilities on the device as well as the number and criticality of open ports.
  • The function considers the potential impact on the organization if the device is compromised.
  • Behavior considers the reputation of inbound connections to and outbound connections from the device, along with its internet exposure.

It also highlights the five riskiest devices in four device categories: IT, IoT, OT, and IoMT; what makes these devices so risky and their distribution by industry (financial, government, healthcare, manufacturing, and retail) and geography (Americas; Asia-Pacific; Europe; and Middle East, Turkey and Africa):

  • IT – Router, computer, server, wireless access point, hypervisor
  • IoT – IP camera, VoIP, video conferencing, ATM, printer
  • OT – PLC, HMI, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), environmental monitoring, building automation controller
  • IoMT – DICOM workstation, nuclear medicine system, imagine, picture archiving and communications system (PACS), patient monitor

Additionally, two recurring themes in the recent research of Vedere Labs have been the growing attack surface due to more devices being connected to enterprise networks and how threat actors leverage these devices to achieve their goals. The attack surface now encompasses IT, IoT, and OT in almost every organization, with the addition of IoMT in healthcare. The researchers demonstrated this with R4IoT, an attack that starts with an IP camera (IoT), moves to a workstation (IT), and disables PLCs (OT).

The report significantly identifies the change in mitigation techniques too. The Forescout Continuum Platform solves the risk assessment problem by continuously discovering, granularly classifying, and assessing devices without agents or active techniques that could compromise business operations. It mentions that after understanding the attack surface, it is important to mitigate risk with automated controls that do not rely only on security agents and that apply to the whole enterprise, instead of silos like the IT network, the OT network, or specific types of IoT devices. Forescout Continuum enables these types of controls by accelerating the design and deployment of dynamic network segmentation across the digital terrain while also automating policy enforcement by enabling countermeasures to mitigate threats, incidents, and compliance gaps.

This World Sight Day, Samsung Sets a Target to Screen 150,000 People in India for Eye Diseases Using its EYELIKE™ Fundus Camera

GURUGRAM, India October 13, 2022 –This World Sight Day, Samsung’s Galaxy Upcycling program has set a target of screening 150,000 individuals in India for eye diseases using the unique EYELIKE™ Fundus Camera by the end of 2023.

As part of the Galaxy Upcycling program, Samsung is giving new life to older Galaxy devices to reduce electronic waste and enable greater access to ophthalmic health care in underserved communities.

Globally, 1.1 billion people suffer from vision loss, 90% of who live in low- and middle-income countries and lack access to affordable and quality eye health care. To address this, Samsung has partnered with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), Yonsei University Health System (YUHS) and Lab SD, Inc. to transform old and unused Galaxy technology into medical diagnosis cameras called EYELIKE™ fundus cameras. This device allows both medical and non-medical professionals to screen patients for conditions that may lead to blindness.

Through programs like Galaxy Upcycling, Samsung is not only providing innovative technologies that reshape our experiences with the world but is also empowering consumers to adopt more environmentally-conscious lifestyles.

To diagnose patients, the program has partnered with four eye hospitals – Sitapur Eye Hospital in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, Aravind Eye Hospital in Pondicherry, GuruhastiChikitsalyain Jodhpur, Rajasthan and Dr.Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital in New Delhi to set up eye care camps and use the devices in vision centers, vans and base hospitals across the country. So far, Samsung has upcycled nearly 200 units of second-hand Galaxy smartphones and distributedEYELIKE™ Fundus Cameras to partners in India.

An older Galaxy smartphone becomes the brain of the EYELIKE™ handheld fundus camera, capturing images while connected to a lens attachment for enhanced fundus diagnosis.

The Galaxy device then utilizes an artificial intelligence algorithm to analyze and diagnose the images for ophthalmic diseases. The device connects to an app that accurately captures patient data and suggests a treatment regimen at a fraction of the cost of commercial instruments. The unique and affordable diagnosis camera can screen patients for conditions that may lead to blindness, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

“At Samsung, we believe in harnessing technology to make a positive impact on society. Programs such as Galaxy Upcycling have helped us in transforming lives through the power of innovation. With the EYELIKE™ Fundus Camera, our partners have been able to provide quality eye screening to patients across India. We are also proud that engineers at Samsung R&D Institute, Bangalore have worked on the EYELIKE™ platform alongside IAPB, YUHS and LabSD who have developed the lens attachment,” said Mohan Rao Goli, CTO, Samsung R&D Institute, Bangalore.

Since the start of the program in India, the four partners have screened around 5,000 patients for eye diseases. Partners point out that the EYELIKE™ device is easy to use, requires less training, is portable and guarantees a high-quality image. It allows for easy identification of the optic nerve, macular and vessels. With these benefits, the partners have been able to help patients in rural areas where access to ophthalmic health care is limited.

Engineers at the Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore, which is Samsung’s largest R&D centre outside Korea, were involved in developing the Fundus image capture mechanism, the AI-based processing algorithm, the intuitive UI and server-related operations in the EYELIKE™application. The EYELIKE™ platform scans retinal images and uses an accurate AI-based algorithm powered by the computational capabilities of these phones to detect diseases in the retinal images and classify them as normal or abnormal.

“IAPB is proud of our continued partnership with Samsung and LabSD on the EYELIKE™ fundus camera. Our work highlights the importance of embracing cross-sector collaboration in building a better future for all. As World Sight Day approaches, we are reminded that delivering on the 2030 IN SIGHT strategy means engaging with new technologies to accelerate progress,” said Drew Keys, Western Pacific Regional Manager, IAPB.

“EYELIKE™ is the result of a collaboration between leaders in the technology and healthcare industries with the mutual goal of bridging barriers to accessible and affordable eye care. By expanding our partnerships, we are advancing the three main components of 2030 IN SIGHT strategy – elevate, integrate, and activate – to make the platform sustainable and scalable,” said Holden Yoon Seung Kim, CEO, LabSD, Inc.

Through this unique and cost-effective solution, Samsung is also helping underserved populations across Vietnam, Morocco and Papua New Guinea.
