This Durga Puja Look After your Eyes the Right Way

By Dr. Ipsita Basu, DO, DNB, DipNB, Consultant – Pediatric Ophthalmology, Disha Eye Hospitals

&

Dr. Joyeeta Das, Consultant Orbit and Oculoplasty Surgeon, Disha Eye Hospitals

The countdown to one of Asia’s largest and most vibrant festivals, the Durga Puja, has begun well and proper. This year, Kolkata – the City of Joy, is all set to celebrate with added zest and fervour as Bengal’s Durga Puja has been declared “an Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO.

With the approach of Durga Puja, people living in different parts of the state are gearing up enthusiastically for exciting pandal visits through the days as well as nights of the Puja. Puja holidays mean indulging in lots of celebrations with family and friends over cosy get-togethers, delicious food, and plenty of fun, laughter, and gossip.

Each one of us is happy to make a few changes in our daily routine to look charming and winsome during the festival days.  In fact, a checklist of what needs to be done to look our best is probably ready for most of us.

Sadly, however, many of us are ignorant when it comes to our eye health. The human eyes, it must be stressed, are one of the most sensitive parts of the body. This important and crucial pair requires necessary vital protection on a regular basis, and more so when the exposure rate of a person increases during non-stop festivities.

The majority population unfortunately remains clueless towards basic eye health and hygiene. As a result, issues like eye allergies, conjunctivitis, redness, and puffiness are quite common among people.

Ensuring proper protection and maintaining accurate eye hygiene can assist us from risking our precious pair to health concerns that arise from negligence, and which are quite capable of making vision partially dark or worse.

But let’s come back specifically to Durga Puja. When subjected to the raging heat of the sun or exposed to pollution for a considerable time, which is quite unavoidable during Puja outings, it is mandatory to safeguard one’s eyes.

So, here are some easy but important eye healthcare guidelines that will help ensure good health and wellness for your eyes and combat common infections.

  1. Use of Ultraviolet goggles – We need to be careful while choosing our tinted eyewear. To enjoy a glimpse of the many idols of Maa Durga in different pandals, often we end up waiting in queues for long hours in the heat of the day, when the sun is at its unforgiving best! During such times, always use ultraviolet protective goggles.  This will prevent eye allergies and long-term eye diseases.
  2. Avoid touching your Eyes with unclean hands– Do not rub or touch your eyes with unwashed hands, especially when outdoors, after shaking hands with others, and if you are perspiring heavily. You may just end up becoming a carrier of infections or allergies for your own eyes.
  1. Be careful with the Tear Film – Avoid splashing water heavily inside your eyes. This may damage the tear film which is a fine protective layer of the eye. Wash your eyes only if foreign particles like dust enter and cause irritation to it. Remember to clean your hands and face once you reach home. Make it a personal responsibility to your own self. This prevents dust and grime that cause eye allergies from entering eyes.
  2. Be cautious with your contact lenses – Extra care is a must for those who are regular users of contact lenses. Going to sleep with your lenses on is dangerous for eye safety. Ensure that you do not wear your lenses at a stretch for more than 16 hours as it may impact the cornea.
  3. Exercise care while applying Eye makeup – This is a must-read for all ages of women. Beautiful eyes do all the talking as they say, and who doesn’t want a glamorous pair during the Pujas?

Firstly, avoid sharing handkerchiefs, towels, and toiletries with others, including close relatives and friends. Secondly, it is also not advisable to share or use common eye cosmetics and makeup. Eye makeup should preferably be light during the daytime as we live in a hot tropical land. If you are using eye shadow, take care that it does not get into the eyes. The application of waterproof mascara is always preferable as ordinary mascara may melt and trickle into the eyes and harm them. Please be careful with your eyeliner as well. It should not get in contact with the eyes directly.

Lastly, do be cautious while removing eye makeup, however, tired you may be. The eyes and the skin around them should be treated like the most delicate and expensive silk. If eye makeup gets into your eyes, please rinse out immediately with cold water but without rubbing the inflammation. And once again, it is worthwhile to mention – always, always, always remove your makeup before going to bed.

This is a roundup of the simple dos and don’ts of taking care of your precious pair of eyes all through the festivities. Remembering to follow these basic principles will ensure good eye health and hygiene. Prioritize the safety of your eyes. This will go a long way in ensuring a happy and safe Durga Puja for you and your loved ones.

Cyber Safety for Youth: Quick Heal kicks off “Cyber Shiksha for Cyber Suraksha” and “Earn & Learn” Initiatives

Pune, Maharashtra: India has become an economic powerhouse in the global landscape, thanks to its unprecedented growth in every sector, especially technology. Over the years, the country has metamorphosed technologically, economically, and socially into a digital nation.

While this has brought great convenience to the public, one cannot discount that vulnerabilities have grown multifold amid the rising intensity of the internet and the growing proliferation of technologies like 5G. One of the critical reasons for this vulnerability is the limited understanding of cybersecurity. We believe that being a pioneer in cyber security, protecting society’s digital way of life is our responsibility. With that responsibility, we want to contribute to the safety and well-being of our future generations.

Quick Heal Foundation (QHF) aims to train youth on cyber security under our “Cyber Shiksha for Cyber Suraksha” initiative with the belief that students, once trained, will be instrumental in bringing awareness to the entire society. To motivate students to participate in this initiative, we intend to offer them a stipend under our “Earn & Learn” program.

This is a pan-India initiative starting in Maharashtra. The state has been divided into five zones for operational effectiveness – Mumbai, Pune, Central & North Maharashtra, Vidarbha, and West Maharashtra. Quick Heal Foundation is screening and training volunteers from 25 institutions across these zones, including C. L. Valia College, D. Y Patil College, and Government Institute of Forensic Science. The foundation will reach more than 2,500 schools and colleges to execute over 3,500 events. Activities like marathons, walkathons, short films, and street plays have been designed to increase participation and spread awareness. Each zone will celebrate the Cyber Champions at a mega conclave at the end of the program. This drive is expected to sensitize over 7,00,000 students. Furthermore, 20 to 25 police officers from 15 cyber police stations will also participate in the training and awareness program.

Talking about these programs, Mrs. Anupama Katkar, Chairperson, Quick Heal Foundation, said, “The internet is omnipresent, and so are cybercrimes. Quick Heal Foundation (QHF), as an advocate of cybersecurity, takes up the onus to enlighten the country’s youth – on responsible usage of the internet.

We hope our endeavour will encourage the students to adopt safe internet practices and also become cyber warriors spreading cybersecurity awareness in society.”

Wrap Up Hunger with Asahi Kasei initiative with innovative Premium Wrap

13th September 2022: It is common to see food items like extra chapati, leftover sabzi or curry from the previous night’s dinner, and vegetable peelings end up without hesitation in the dustbin in most Indian households. However, this food waste, in turn, puts pressure on the waste management systems, contributes to pollution and further leads to food deprivation.

To curb food wastage Asahi Kasei’s Premium Wrap product is a saviour that keeps food fresh longer by locking in moisture and preventing oxygen from flowing through. It makes packing and storage of food items at room temperature or in the refrigerator more efficient. Because the product is made of PVDC (Polyvinylidene chloride) cling film, it is wrinkle-free and simple to rip off and wrap. Simply draw out the needed quantity of wrap from the roll, seal the box, hold the flap down on the thumb mark, and rip along the cutter edge. It keeps frozen meals fresh and prevents them from drying out, and it may be utilized in a variety of ways. Raw vegetables (including those with high water content), fruits, meats, poultry, and fish, as well as prepared roti attas and doughs, may all be stored. Furthermore, it is perfect to store or heat any kind of Indian or exotic preparation in the refrigerator or the microwave.

To further make a real difference in the society Asahi Kasei has joined hands with the notable non-profit organisation, The Akshaya Patra Foundation, to introduce the ‘Wrap Up Hunger With Asahi Kasei’ initiative. As part of this initiative, people will post a picture of food wrapped in the Asahi Kasei Premium Wrap next to the product and use the #WrapUpHungerWithAsahiKasei. For every post shared with the hashtag, Asahi Kasei can provide 3 Meals for Akshaya Patra’s Mid-day Meal Programme – which provides nutritious meals to children studying in Government and Government-aided schools. Through this social media campaign, the brand seeks to help reduce food wastage as well as support eliminating the prevalent issue of classroom hunger by helping provide a meal to underprivileged children.

This initiative is a definite step towards bringing about a meaningful change in the lives of disadvantaged and deprived children across the country by helping to provide fresh, nutritious meals to them.

While talking about the initiative, Luve Oberoi, Sr Marketing Manager, Asahi Kasei India, said, “Most people do not prefer storing and consuming leftover food the following day as they believe the freshness and nutritional value of the food is lost. However, the premium wrap is a great way to store food, retain its freshness and prepare a leftover dish the next day. This is also especially helpful in reducing food wastage, considering the country has so many people who unfortunately go for days without a proper meal. Our initiative in association with Akshaya Patra is also directed towards the cause of curbing food wastage and feeding as many people as we can. We are happy and grateful to be in a position to make a difference, and we hope that we can also inspire people to do the same.”

Food is one of the most critical pillars for survival. However, the 2021 UNEP Food Waste Index Report states that 61% of food waste comes from households. Bearing this in mind, we aimed to create awareness about food wastage and classroom hunger via this initiative. By encouraging people to share a photo of food wrapped in the Asahi Kasei Premium Wrap – which preserves food for long and helps reduce wastage – and providing meals to underprivileged school children for every post, we are happy to do our bit and give back to the community. And we are pleased to have partnered with The Akshaya Patra Foundation for enabling this.”

The Premium Wrap is now available in stores like Big Bazaar, Le Marche, Spencers, Foodhall in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai and also online at Amazon and Big basket.
