Transforming Rural India Foundation to host 2nd edition of Indian Rural Colloquy…

New Delhi, August 1st, 2022: Transforming Rural India Foundation (TRIF), an organisation deeply focused on challenges faced by the marginalised communities of 10,000 villages of India, is all set to host the second edition of Indian Rural Colloquy (IRC) from August 1st, 2022.

The eight-day-long conference, which culminates with an offline event at India Habitat Centre on August 8, will have more than 13 sessions covering a range of subjects including the importance of education, healthcare, nutrition, and governance for the under-served sections of the country. Eminent thought leaders including Mr Sam Pitroda, Mr Neelesh Misra, Mr M Hari Menon, Ms Bharti Gupta Ramola, Ms Alice Gugelev, Mr Andrew D Goodland, and Mr Swapnil
Shekhar, among others, will serve as panelists during different sessions.

The Indian Rural Colloquy aims to create a space of discovery, exploration, and engagement for the fraternity actively involved in rural uplifting and growth in the country. Through topical seminars attended by leading development practitioners, policymakers, development administrators, and philanthropists, the Colloquy seeks to address issues that matter to rural communities. It will trigger and lead conversations that are critical to understanding and shaping the ever- changing yet diverse socio-economic fabric of rural society. The India Rural Colloquy week also commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Quit India Movement, the largest societal mobilization that took place in pursuit of dignity and freedom in the country, unequivocally laying the foundations of India’s Independence.

“India will remain overwhelmingly rural, and ground realities in education, healthcare, and governance are unlikely to change unless urgent, concerted efforts are made. Accelerating inter-generational mobility in villages is critical to India’s growth ambitions and the creation of a just and equitable society. Challenges in rural and transition zones became most  demonstrably – and even poignantly – visible in the returning migrant’s crisis. The pandemic also revealed the vulnerability of the rural economy in terms of broken agricultural supply chains and the lack of local jobs. Equally, it also revealed the existing social mechanisms of resilience within the rural society — the capacity of communities and the local economy to withstand shocks. As such, Covid-19 has laid bare existing vulnerabilities and challenges while also setting the stage for new pathways of growth and transformation. We have brought some leading development practitioners, administrators, policymakers, and philanthropists on a common platform at IRC to discuss about policies and pathways towards an equitable society with opportunities that will pave the way for a better today and tomorrow,” said Mr Anish Kumar, Co-Lead, Transforming Rural India Foundation.

The Indian Rural Colloquy will have insightful and engaging conversations on a wide array of subjects including Charting Bharat’s Tryst with Destiny – India @ 100; Design for Better World: Global Wellbeing in Post Industrial Society;  New World of Data Science For Effective Public System Delivery; Future of Food Systems: Income and Employment; Big Society: Compact to Deliver Sustainable Development; Ignorance is No Bliss: Manifestation for Millennial Action;
and Nutrition Security for India: The Agriculture and Community Unlock; among others. The sessions will also see the participation of visitors who would get the opportunity to discuss with top experts and thereby make meaningful contributions of their own. Interested participants can attend the sessions by registering on the website  https://www.trif.in/india-rural-colloquy/

Apart from TRIF supporting NGOs working at the grassroots, it also works with governments in designing and delivering solutions for rural India. Their goal is to make rural communities self-sufficient. They also provide skill training to the rural communities with a view to improve the latter’s output and thereafter connect them to a marketplace in the real world. The skilling of rural communities ensures that they graduate from being small farmers to Agri-prenuers, who can improve output, plan ahead and become key suppliers in the marketplace.

MGM Healthcare Doctors Perform Rare Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery On A Sudanese

New Delhi, August 1st: MGM Healthcare has successfully performed a Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Surgery on a 34- year-old man from Sudan who was suffering from Wilsons disease for nine years. The patient recovered well in two weeks with good improvement to all his symptoms.

Abdur Ghafar (Name Changed), has been symptomatic with tremors in all four limbs facing difficulty in walking, speaking and swallowing food. The doctors at MGM Healthcare on diagnosis found him to be suffering from Wilson’s disease (WD), a genetic illness of copper metabolism leading to abnormal copper accumulation in various organs including brain, eyes, and liver.

A multi-disciplinary team comprising of Dr Sridhar, Director and Group Head Institute of Neurosciences and Spinal Disorders, MGM Healthcare, the Neurologists, the rehabilitation specialists, and the Neurosurgical team apprised the family on the “Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)” to symptomatically address his symptoms, which were the root cause of Abdur Ghafar problems.

The team decided to use a Thalamic target for the procedure – something that has been done rarely in this clinical setting of Wilson’s disease.

Dr K Sridhar Director and Group Head Institute of Neurosciences and Spinal Disorders, MGM Healthcare said “Deep Brain Stimulation is a modern, technology driven surgical procedure that can improve the quality of life of patients. It is important to carefully understand the patient’s problem to decide on the appropriate target to stimulate in the Brain. It is safe when properly done with all due protocols. We are happy that Mr Abdur Ghafar has improved, and that the surgery has allowed him to get out of the wheelchair and walk.”

The patient showed a good clinical improvement immediately post-surgery, due to the lesioning effect, and 2 weeks later the stimulator was programmed to deliver appropriate stimulation following which there was a significant improvement. His tremors improved and he is able to ambulate with minimal to no support, though continued to have mild proximal tremors in his right hand.

Quote by Manish Mishra, Partner, JSA on July GST collections at Rs 1.49 lakh cr, 2nd highest-ever monthly collections…

With the sustained economic recovery post-pandemic, most of the core sectors of the economy have shown signs of growth. This is reflected in improving economic indices along with GST collection. Further, with the law settling down after five years of implementation and the Government taking significant measures in the past few months to clarify the ambiguities in the law and curbing the menace of fake invoicing and fraudulent credit availment also seem to have contributed to the rising GST collections. With the recent increase in the rate of GST for critical sectors of mass consumption and continuing economic resurgence of India, it is expected that this upward trend in GST collections is likely to continue.” Manish Mishra, Partner, JSA

Samsung Enabling Open Innovation Culture Among Employees Globally Through its C-Lab Program

Gurugram, 1st August 2022: Smartphone and consumer electronics major Samsung is promoting a strong culture of innovation among its employees globally, including in India, through its C-Lab (Creative Lab) program. C-Lab is an in-house ideas incubation program that enables employees to develop their creative ideas into meaningful offerings while staying within the company.

Samsung

C-Lab aims to cultivate a creative culture at Samsung that inspires employees to freely propose innovative ideas and solutions that respond to the world’s challenges. Employees whose ideas get selected through C-Lab program work as a startup within Samsung for one year, separately from the normal work environment. C-Lab members have the flexibility to decide their own working hours and days. They can also set their own rules and hire additional members.

Twice every year, employees can pitch their ideas through an internal system that go through online voting and are reviewed by experts. The final idea pitches happen in front of 100 employees, an evaluation group and 10 executives of Samsung.

Mark Sohn_Creativity and Innovation Center

“Our vision for C-Lab is to expand the creative culture within the company by discovering and implementing innovative ideas. We are striving towards hybrid innovation, which combines the know-how of a large corporation and the spirit of the challenge of a small venture company to spread everywhere in Samsung,” said Mark Sohn of the Creativity and Innovation Center, Samsung Electronics.

The selected teams work on prototyping their ideas and market testing them in the one-year time when they work with Samsung as a startup. These teams get multiple opportunities to show their progress and receive feedback. One opportunity is the C-Lab fair held every November. Another is an opportunity to get feedback from external customers by showcasing prototypes at global exhibitions such as CES, MWC and South by Southwest.

Starting 2015, Samsung introduced the spin-off program for C-Lab projects. Those projects that were not closely related to Samsung’s business and had not been transferred to an in-house division, were spun-off.

An example of the success of the C-Lab program is a company founded by Pankaj Agarwal, who joined Samsung in South Korea in 2004. Today, his startup TagHive, a C-Lab spin-off, offers AI-powered smart school solutions to connect students, teachers and parents for a better feedback loop for all. TagHive’s ‘Class Saathi’, a clicker-based classroom response system, is helping reduce student dropouts in Indian government schools. TagHive is currently working closely with Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha state governments to deploy Class Saathi.

In the last 10 years since C-Lab started, over 1,507 employees have participated in 365 C-Lab projects globally. Many innovations have sprung from C-Lab over the years that are now part of Samsung – like Galaxy Upcycling, Eco-packaging, Lifestyle TV ‘The Sero’, and new features for mobile cameras and Samsung Pay. The program has enabled 59 startups.

In 2018, Samsung also introduced the C-Lab Outside program to vitalize the startup ecosystem and promote job creation, helping startups to grow their business through financial aid, mentoring, consultation, business cooperation and infrastructural support.
