Early Diagnosis to keep Gastric Cancer at bay

By Dr. Ninad Katdare, Senior Surgical Oncologist at HCG Cancer Centre, Mumbai

If you suffer from indigestion and heartburn, beware! It could indicate stomach cancer or gastric cancer. In this case, early diagnosis is the key to a cure. But it often does not get diagnosed until it has spread to the lymph nodes or to the other organs of the body. Also, its traits mimic other illnesses, and hence the moment any unusual change is noticed in the body, it must be shown to a medical specialist.

Gastric cancer, also called stomach cancer, occurs when normally healthy cells get replaced by growing cancer cells within the stomach lining. The stomach is a muscular sac located in the upper part of the abdomen. Cancers in the stomach can develop very rapidly hence it becomes important to look out for early signs to come up with an effective treatment.

Symptoms –

Early signs of gastric cancer include heartburn, indigestion, difficulty swallowing, change in appetite, nausea, feeling bloated after eating, vomiting with or without blood, swelling of the abdomen, discomfort in the abdomen above the navel, abdominal pain, feeling of fullness in upper abdomen below the breast bone after consuming smaller portions of food, unintentional weight loss and decrease in hemoglobin.

These symptoms can resemble some common signs of other gastrointestinal conditions like GERD, gastritis or peptic ulcers as well. Hence if these symptoms persist despite adequate medications, then they need to be comprehensively evaluated at the earliest to rule out stomach cancers. If stomach cancer goes undetected, it can become fatal.

Causes and Risks

Stomach cancer forms when there is a genetic change in the DNA of the stomach cells. Because of this change, the cells grow rapidly and form a tumor that further invades and destroys healthy tissues. With time, it then spreads to other parts of the body.

Factors that increase the likelihood of developing stomach cancer are:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Obesity
  • Gastritis
  • Family history of stomach cancer
  • Infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)
  • Long-term stomach inflammation (gastritis)
  • History of stomach polyps or stomach ulcers
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Diet high in fatty, salty, smoked or pickled foods

Precautions –

The risk of stomach cancer can be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. These include limiting alcohol consumption and the use of tobacco products as it helps reduce the risk for many medical problems. Avoid eating smoked and pickled foods and salted meats and fish. Eating plenty of fiber, fresh fruits, and vegetables with plenty of whole grain foods and vitamin-rich foods can also lower the risk of stomach cancer.

If you witness any symptoms, immediately see a medical practitioner who will help evaluate the symptoms based on complete medical history and physical examination.

Treatment –

Treatment varies depending on the type of cancer, its location, and how far it has advanced in the body. The treatment options include

  1. Radiation is where high-energy X-rays are used to destroy cancer cells with the help of a machine outside the body.
  2. Chemotherapy is done using one or more drugs to destroy the cancer cells by preventing its cell growth or surgery is prescribed.
  3. Surgery can be by open technique or as a minimally invasive procedure where the tumor along with some surrounding healthy tissue is removed to determine the extent of the disease.

Early diagnosis is the key to improving the outlook for stomach cancer. Some risk factors such as family history are not within a person’s control. But the moment there is trouble eating, nausea, dyspepsia, reflux or any symptoms that begin to bother, one must visit a medical specialist. You might want to consider getting a screening test with a doctor’s advice if you believe that you are at risk for developing gastric cancer. The chances of recovery are better if the diagnosis is made at an early stage. This will also help in better treatment outcomes.

USA Fencing Teams Up With RealResponse to Launch 320-ENGARDE — A Texting Hotline for Anonymous Reporting

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., and CHARLOTTE, N.C. — USA Fencing, the national governing body for the Olympic and Paralympic sport of fencing in the United States, has joined forces with the award-winning team at RealResponse to offer 320-ENGARDE, a new texting hotline that allows members of the fencing community to safely report suspected abuse, issues or other potential violations of USA Fencing policies.

By texting 320-ENGARDE (320-364-2733), fencers, coaches, parents and others in the community can submit a report — either anonymously or on the record — about anything concerning that they experience, witness or learn about.

Put simply, this texting hotline will encourage fencers to remain “en garde” both on and off the strip as the fencing community rallies together to recognize and report abuse or other issues of concern.

When a text message is sent to 320-ENGARDE, the contents are confidentially and securely stored in the RealResponse platform. Anonymity is preserved because none of the reporter’s contact information, including their phone number, can be viewed by USA Fencing.

After a message is received, a designated USA Fencing representative can respond via text message to gather additional information — all while allowing the submitter to remain anonymous (if they chose) throughout the process.

The underlying goal behind 320-ENGARDE, says USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews, is to streamline the reporting process by offering an additional tool to members.

“At USA Fencing, we believe that reporting a concern should be as simple as picking up your smartphone,”Andrews says. “Our partnership with RealResponse and the debut of 320-ENGARDE gives members a vital resource that’s easy to use, easy to remember and anonymous.”

David Chadwick, founder and CEO of RealResponse, says his team is “proud to add USA Fencing to the growing number of national governing bodies that RealResponse partners with.”

“The proactive work that Phil and his team have undertaken to ensure the health and well-being of all in the organization is commendable,” he says, “and we look forward to helping them in this very worthwhile and much-needed element of their business.”

While 320-ENGARDE is a powerful tool, it doesn’t replace other reporting options offered through FenceSafe, USA Fencing’s suite of safety resources. Other reporting options remain available, allowing members to share concerns through an online form, email or phone call.

Aishanya and Dhruvika mesmerise the audience with their live performance of the duet Arangetram at Triveni Kala Sangam

New Delhi: Indian classical dancers – Aishanya Mathur and Dhruvika Chaudhary – mesmerised the audience with their graceful duet Arangetram performance held at the Triveni Kala Sangham in New Delhi on August 28.

For those unaware, “Arangetram” is the Tamil word for “ascending the stage” by a dancer upon completing their training. It is the first time a student of Indian classical dance and music has performed publicly after extensive training. This achievement qualifies the dancer to perform classical dance professionally and instruct others.

Aishanya and Dhruvika

Aishanya and Dhruvika, born on the same day, share an exceptional bond and have been learning this art form together for the last 12 years under the guidance of their teacher Dr. Indira Murugesan of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. The duo started their training in Bharatnatyam from the tender age of 4, and have been working tirelessly to improve their skills in this art form.

Both Aishanya and Dhruvika have had the privilege of representing India in the International folklore Gala organised in seven cities across Italy. They were also part of the contingent of several classical dancers who performed at the World Cultural festival in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Nitin Mathur, the father of Aishanya, said, “It was a proud moment for us when she was performing live on the stage. She has completed her Madhyama Pratham and studying in 11th standard. Her interest in Bharatnatyam started when she was just 4 years old.”

Sunaina Chaudhary, the mother of Dhruvika, said, “Both the girls mesmerised the audience with their scintillating performance of Arangetram. She has worked hard for the last 12 years to achieve success and completed her Madhyamapoorna (diploma) in Bharatnatyam.”

Media.Monks India wins Autodesk Imagine award for innovations in the Virtual Production space

India, August 29, 2022:Media.Monks India’s pursuit to merge creative and technology was applauded at the Autodesk Imagine awards where it was recognised for the innovative use of technology to drive forward Virtual Production.

Autodesk Imagine Awards recognize exceptional contributions to innovation, spanning the fields of architecture, engineering and construction, product design and manufacturing, and media and entertainment.

Winners

The winning entry focused on Media.Monks India’s maiden venture into changing the landscape of traditional shoots by using 3D environments, culminating in the first-of-its-kind Virtual Production studio.

Robert Godinho, Managing Director, Media.Monks India, comments, “Virtual Production is a brand’s best friend and this accolade is a recognition of the future trends that will take filmmaking into a whole new plethora of techniques. We can’t wait to add more layers and dimensions to what technology and creative art can build together “

Virtual Production revolutionizes traditional film production in an industry which still uses on-location, studio shoots or green screen set-ups by incorporating a new way of shooting films: the use of real-time 3D environments + post-production VFX. Virtual production solves the problem of location scouting and cuts down tremendously on production costs and time while delivering improved results. In short – It gives you a lot more, for much less.

For the first project in the Virtual Studio, Media.Monks created a short film on the imaginative power of a child.

According to Media.Monks, with myriad moving parts to the whole project, previsualization, and planning were crucial. The Virtual Production process allowed Media.Monks to align all pipelines, pre-production: production: and post-production, and create the film in real-time without using green screens, instead, using only set lights and LEDs for a super seamless process.

John Paite, Chief Creative Officer (art & tech), Media.Monks India, adds, “Virtual Production is not about the hardware per se. It’s purely the people. Its success of it comes down to teamwork. Right from the Director, DOP, Art, Technical director, and the Artists. It requires highly technical skill sets to get the best results and you will have to trust each other. I guarantee that great things will come out of it if you use the right people and vice versa.”

Italian startup

Italian startup takes 1,500,000 kg to create 1Kg

Diamonds are formed when carbon is under an immense amount of pressure and heat. It takes up to 1.3 million times atmospheric pressure (136 gigapascals) to turn carbon into diamonds.

“We do not make diamonds but the lightest suitcases in the world. – says Michael Kogelnik, the founder of BAZZA.com, the Italian start-up that will produce the lightest suitcase ever made in history in a factory near Milan. – This product uses revolutionary technology to be super light but at the same time, like a diamond, super strong.”

BAZZA suitcases in fact weigh about 1 kg, which is one-third the weight of suitcases on the market.
Making them requires 630 tons of machinery pushing at a pressure of 1,500,000 kg, which is needed to shape the raw material and transform it into the suitcase shell.

Italian startup

“With a lower pressure, the machine would explode, – explains Daniele Maraviglia, production director, – The technology used allows a superfast production cycle that enables us to produce a suitcase in one minute. The pressure with which it is created makes it possible to obtain an ultra-thin (1mm), compact and super strong suitcase.”

“I was always having to pay overweight fees, and carrying around heavy stuff is no fun, – Micheal says, – so one day I set myself the absurd goal of creating a 1 kg luggage and I worked tirelessly to rethink every aspect of the luggage’s design to eliminate every superfluous gram.”

With carry-on baggage regulations by airlines allowing a maximum weight of 7 kg, lightness is becoming an increasingly important element. With a BAZZA suitcase that weighs 1 kg instead of 3 kg, customers can carry 50% more personal belongings than any other product currently on the market.

The environment also benefits from the weight reduction, both during the flight and during production: Bazza claims that its luggage, which is also 100% recyclable, will consume 98% less CO2 during its lifetime.

Bazza luggage will be launched in the market in November 2022.
