Huawei Announces New Inventions That Will Revolutionize AI, 5G, and User Experience

Huawei Announces New Inventions That Will Revolutionize AI, 5G, and User Experience

Huawei announced a batch of key inventions as part of its biennial “Top Ten Inventions” Awards at the “Broadening the Innovation Landscape 2022” forum held at its Shenzhen headquarters. The award is designed to recognize inventions that could create new series of products, become important commercial features of existing products, or that generate considerable value for the company and the industry.

The awarded inventions range from an adder neural network that significantly reduces power consumption and circuit area to a game-changing “optical iris” that provides a unique identifier for optical fibers. It is designed to help carriers manage their network resources, cutting time and costs associated with broadband deployment.

The announcement came in the context of intellectual property rights, the protection and sharing of which Huawei believes is critical to the tech ecosystem.

“Protecting IP is key to protecting innovation,” said Huawei’s Chief Legal Officer, Song Liuping. “We are eager to license our patents and technologies to share our innovations with the world. This will help broaden the innovation landscape, drive our industry forward, and advance technology for everyone,” he added.

“Huawei is constantly changing itself, and constantly showcasing to the world the value of IP from China,” said Tian Lipu, President of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property’s China Chapter.

By the end of 2021, Huawei held more than 110,000 active patents across over 45,000 patent families. It has more granted patents than any other Chinese company, has filed the most patent applications with the EU Patent Office, and ranked fifth in terms of new patents granted in the United States. For five straight years, Huawei has ranked No. 1 worldwide in terms of Patent Cooperation Treaty applications.

Alan Fan, Head of Huawei’s IPR Department, said the value of Huawei patents has seen wide recognition in the industry, especially in mainstream standards such as cellular technology, Wi-Fi, and audio/video codecs.

“In the past five years, more than two billion smartphones have been licensed to Huawei’s 4G/5G patents. And for cars, about eight million connected vehicles licensed to Huawei patents are being delivered to the consumers every year,” Fan said.

Huawei is also working actively with patent license administration companies in offering “one-stop” licenses for mainstream standards.

“Over 260 companies—accounting for one billion devices—have obtained Huawei’s HEVC patent licenses through a patent pool,” Fan said. He added that the company is in discussions to establish a new patent pool to give the industry “quick access” to Huawei’s patents for Wi-Fi devices worldwide.

Huawei is also discussing joint licensing programs for 5G patents with licensing experts and other leading industry patentees.

Liu Hua, Director of World Intellectual Property Organization Office in China, praised Huawei’s sustained focus on innovation, saying: “We look forward to seeing Huawei continue to take part in high-level global competition with innovation at its core.”

For Manuel Desantes, former Vice President of European Patent Office, given the vast number of changes in the world these days, what matters most is no longer the number of registered patents or inventions. “The IP system should assure that the creations that merit protection are those that bring actual value,” he said.

This marked the third innovation and IP-themed event Huawei has hosted on its innovation practices. Every year, Huawei invests over 10% of its sales revenue into R&D.

In terms of R&D expenditure, Huawei ranked second in the 2021 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard. In 2021, the company increased its R&D investment to CNY142.7 billion, representing 22.4% of our total revenue. Over the past decade, Huawei’s total R&D investment surpassed CNY845 billion.

Aster MIMS Hospital & Skye Air Mobility join hands to introduce Drone delivery in Healthcare in Kerala

Kozikode, 8th June 2022: Aster DM Healthcare, India’s leading private healthcare service providers, has started drone delivery trials with Skye Air Mobility, a leading drone-technology-based logistics firm for transforming healthcare delivery landscape in India. Recently, both the companies have joined hands to transport essential medicine and critical lab samples from Aster MIMS Hospital to Aster Mother Hospital Areekode through air using drones.

According to the agreement, Aster DM Healthcare will leverage Skye Air’s drone technology for delivery of diagnostic samples and medicines initially in Calicut and further across Kerala.

This is very first time in Kerala, people shall witness live usage of drone technology in healthcare. Skye Air’s flagship product ‘Skye Ship One’ is being used for these trials. Skye Air will showcase the efficiency of drone technology to facilitate faster deliveries of medical and diagnostic samples. This partnership is expected to overcome the logistical barriers while reducing the turn-around-time. Following the successful completion of the 5 days BVLOS trials, Skye Air targets to undertake approximately 50 flights, each carrying blood samples and medicines for Aster MIMS Hospital.

The drone-led delivery system is executed through a designated Skye Air cold chain professional to first load the medicine and diagnostic sample in a temperature-controlled payload box. This payload box is then loaded in the drone which is then directed by drone pilots from the command center through a predetermined route to a fixed destination.

Commenting on the initiative Mr. Veneeth Purushotaman, Group Chief Information Officer, Aster DM Healthcare said “This collaboration is an onset to a complete digitization of healthcare in India. In Aster, we have been at the forefront of adopting digitization, technology and innovation into our core operations which is now essential to support patients as per their needs. This paradigm shift from the traditional workflow of the healthcare system to a digitized healthcare will streamline all our operations and ensure an efficient delivery system. We are thrilled to partner with Skye Air as we pave the way to successfully adopting cutting edge digital technology and innovative solutions to efficiently assist our core operations. With rapid digitalization of healthcare delivery systems, we will continue to invest more on improving our health equity in India and world over”

Commenting on the success of the BVLOS trial runs so far, Mr. Ankit Kumar, CEO, Skye Air Mobility said, “These trials aim to demonstrate a faster supply chain for sample collection by effectively using drone delivery technology. The technology illustrates the cost effectiveness and reduction in delivery time. Therefore, it acts as a case model on how the unmanned aerial systems could help hospital chains like Aster MIMS hospital better serve its patient’s needs and provide opportunities for network improvements that generate efficiencies thereby enabling it to grow its business. These trial runs will result in commercial rollouts in different locations for the healthcare service provider across India.”

Commenting on the initiative Mr. Farhan Yasin, Regional Director, Aster Kerala and Oman Cluster said “The possibilities of modern technology are endless. It is important to make the best use of these possibilities. Drones are generally used only for purposes such as shooting. In this scenario we think why this technology could not be used for the transfer of drugs and transfer of lab collections. It’s a revolutionary thought. We plan and implement this idea precisely. In the first phase of the experiment, a drone connection was established between Aster Mother Areekode and Aster Mims Calicut. If it turns out to be successful, our drones will be able to reach every home in our state in case of an emergency and execute such transfers effortlessly.

Skye Air Mobility, a Drone Delivery logistics firm based in New Delhi is changing the face of logistics as it continues to achieve its key milestones cutting across diverse sectors such as healthcare, diagnostics, ecommerce, quick-commerce and Agri-commodity delivery. These trials by Skye Air & Aster MIMS Hospital runs will result in commercial rollouts in different locations for the healthcare service provider across India.

Akamai Reveals New Research on Top Three Internet Security Threats

Bengaluru, India – June 08, 2022– Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the cloud company that powers and protects life online, revealed three new research reports today at the RSA Conference 2022. These in-depth reports focus on three of the most critical areas of web security: ransomware, web applications and APIs, and DNS traffic.

Analyzing trillions of data points across its multiple platforms, the Akamai research team uncovered new findings on threat actor behaviour via popular attack traffic and techniques. The three reports link the most prominent security trends and paint an accurate map of the modern attack landscape. An up-to-date analysis of ransomware attack trends highlight the risks and suggest mitigation, while an analysis of Web app and API attack trends offers a fresh look at the infection vectors used by ransomware operators and others. An analysis of DNS complements the reports with a view of overall attacks analyzed via one of the internet’s most foundational technologies.

Authored by Akamai’s team of cybersecurity experts, the analysis centers on attack trends and techniques as well as solutions to solve today’s most pressing cybersecurity issues. Highlights from each report include:

Akamai Ransomware Threat Report : With the rise of Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) attacks, including from the Conti ransomware gang, Akamai analyzed and discovered the most recent and effective components of ransomware attackers’ methodologies, tools and techniques. Key findings include:

Sixty percent of successful Conti attacks were conducted on United States companies, while 30% occurred in the European Union.

An analysis of the industries attacked highlights the risk of supply chain disruption, critical infrastructure impact, and supply chain cyberattacks.

Most successful Conti attacks target businesses with $10-250 million in revenue, indicating a “goldilocks” range of successful attack targets among medium and small businesses.

The gang’s tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) are well-known, but highly effective – a sobering reminder of the arsenal that is at the disposal of other hackers. But also that these attacks can be prevented with the right mitigation.

Conti’s emphasis in their documentation on hacking and hands-on propagation, rather than encryption, should drive network defenders to focus on those parts of the kill chain as well, instead of focusing on the encryption phase.

Akamai Web Application & API Threat Report : Through the first half of 2022, Akamai observed significant increases in web application and API attacks across the globe, with more than nine billion attack attempts to date. Details for each of the company’s key observations are as follows:

Web application attack attempts against customers grew by more than 300% year over year in H1, the largest increase Akamai has ever observed.

LFI attacks now surpass SQLi attacks as the most predominant WAAP attack vector, increasing by nearly 400% year over year.

Commerce is the most impacted vertical, accounting for 38% of recent attack activity, while technology has seen the most growth so far in 2022.

Akamai DNS Traffic Insights Threat Report : Analyzing more than 7 trillion DNS queries per day and proactively identifying and blocking threats, including malware, ransomware phishing, and botnet, Akamai researchers found:

More than 1 of 10 monitored devices communicated at least once to domains associated with malware, ransomware, phishing or command and control (C2).

Phishing traffic showed that most victims were targeted by scams that abused and mimicked technology and financial brands, which affected 31% and 32% of the victims, respectively.

According to research that analyzed more than 10,000 malicious JavaScript samples — representing threats like malware droppers, phishing pages, scammers and cryptominers’ malware — at least 25% of the examined samples used JavaScript obfuscation techniques to evade detection.

“These new reports offer a detailed look into some of the most pressing security issues facing organizations today,” said Ofri Ziv, Akamai’s Senior Director of Security Research. “Akamai’s unparalleled visibility across much of the global threat landscape allows our researchers to analyze and correlate events that are seldom seen by other groups. We hope to help the community understand where threat actors are focused and how to better protect themselves from new threats as these threats continue to evolve.”

Monetary Policy Reaction – Hike Was Expected, But Is Not Disastrous

As anticipated, with inflation edging higher in the aftermath of the Russia-Ukraine war and the surging oil prices, the RBI has decided to increase the repo rates by 50 bps. It is now increased to 4.90%. A hike was inevitable, but we are now entering the red zone. Any future hikes will reflect markedly on housing sales.

Considering that inflation continues above its target zone of 6%, a hike was inevitable, and it will doubtlessly have some repercussions on housing uptake. The RBI is tasked with controlling the spiralling inflation in the country but must simultaneously be careful to not hurt demand recovery. This is a tightrope walk under the best of circumstances. Overall, high inflation with low GDP can be cause of worry but as of now the Indian economy remains robust.

The rate hike will push up home loan interest rates, which had already begun creeping upward after the surprise monetary policy announcement last month. Interest rates will remain lower than during the global financial crisis of 2008, when they went as high as 12% and above. Nevertheless, the current hike will reflect in residential sales volumes in the months to come, more so in the affordable and mid-segments.

The silver lining is that the Indian housing market is still largely end-user driven, so there is no investor mindset seeking the lowest possible entry point. Genuine demand comes from an underlying aspiration for homeownership.

Credit cards to be linked with UPI | Quote from Cashfree Payments

By Akash Sinha, CEO and Co-Founder, Cashfree Payments.

“We welcome the RBI’s move to allow credit cards (starting with Rupay) to be linked to the UPI accounts. This is an important step for enabling credit payments via UPI, which until now was only possible through linking overdraft accounts. Other options included linking savings and current accounts to UPI via debit cards/ Aadhaar. We believe that this will significantly contribute to the Digital India imperative. In May 2022, UPI processed more than Rs. 10 trillion worth of transactions, witnessing a doubled volume and value of transactions in a year’s time. Cashfree Payments is a certified and compliant payments solutions provider and we believe in an inclusive nature of services and products which also resonates with UPI operations. The central bank’s announcement is well-timed and provides us with an added encouragement to continue our efforts to assist the payments industry accelerate the digitalization journey and promote financial inclusion.”
