WOCE announces the launch of a platform to capture, calculate and offset the carbon footprint

  • This year the World Environment Day theme- ‘Only One Earth’, focuses on living sustainably in harmony with nature, and necessitates the need for transformative changes through policies and individual choices
  • ‘A shift in consumer behaviour vis a vis carbon accounting is a must to achieve Net Zero emission and one must start with capturing and offsetting the carbon footprint that we add to the environment’: WOCE

As sustainability is becoming increasingly important, WOCE, an India-based climate-friendly start-up has announced the launch of its platform, which will allow organisations to enable its workforce to capture, calculate and earn rewards to offset carbon footprint, ahead of the World Environment Day 2022.

“Organisations are committing to ambitious net-zero targets but there is a dearth of industry-focused solutions, which could help accelerate the Government’s mission journey to net-zero by 2070 and that is the gap, we aim to fulfil”, said Anup Garg, Founder and Director at WOCE (World of Circular Economy).

At the CoP26, India announced that it would reduce its carbon emissions by one billion tonnes from now onwards till 2030. Additionally, the government will take steps to reduce the nation’s carbon intensity by 45 percent by 2030. Only with serious and concerted efforts of the corporate, this dream could be realised.

WOCE strongly believes in the philosophy of “What cannot be measured, cannot be managed”. It integrates corporates, employees, carbon offset green projects, sustainable marketplace vendors on one single platform to measure and manage an individual’s/organisation’s carbon footprint.

“Our product will be available in the market in the next eight weeks’ time. It targets organisations, which feel integral to the environment and commit themselves to net-zero carbon emission. The objective is to build a sustainable ecosystem and instill changes in people’s lifestyle, which promotes green living. Corporates have a bigger role to play to accelerate the journey towards net zero”, said Garg.

Besides, the idea behind WOCE is to lead one business organisation to inspire others towards building a sustainable ecosystem. This process starts with the employees; they are made aware of the gravity of the environment situation and then, take responsibility for the carbon emissions.

According to a 2020 study by three of the University of British Columbia researchers, consumers struggle to understand what actions have the greatest impact toward reducing their carbon footprint.

According to Garg, “The app that WOCE is launching, will help organisations to illuminate the concept of capturing carbon footprint in the simplest way that can otherwise be difficult for people to grasp. This has been made possible by two years of rigorous research which takes 50+ parameters into account, which vary by different geographies while computing emissions.” The aim is to shift the behaviour of people by taking responsibility for their action, which is causing harm to the ecosystem while capturing it and calculating. It’s a process to change the mindset and bring consciousness that sustainability is not an option, but will be a way of life we all lead!

Garg said, “On App download, every employee can keep a check on his/her emissions via travels (air, rail, bus, car, bike), eats or energy (gas, power) usages/ consumption, waste disposal, etc. on a daily basis. This way, the company can account for all its employees and measure, reduce and neutralize emissions and report its carbon footprint.” Also, this will differentiate the organisations who are serious about making a change versus some who are still talking, have no thoughts and concrete plans in place.

AARC webinar: Experts discuss the Circular economy and Recycling of Beverage Cartons

Action Alliance for Recycling Beverage Cartons (AARC), 3R WASTE foundation and United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) Japan, Urban update and All India Institute of Local Self Government joined forces on 6th June 2022 to promote an integrated approach to address the issues and opportunities in the recycling of beverage cartons and plastic packaging. During the webinar conducted by AARC, 3R Waste foundation and UNCRD on “Recycling Beverage Cartons and Plastic Packaging in Circular economy”, several industry stakeholders along with waste management partners, recycling partners and academicians where they made their submission on improving the waste management eco-system.

The primary objective of the webinar was to cascade awareness on segregation of waste and disseminate information amongst different target groups on Circular Economy and Beverage carton recycling. During the session, industry stakeholders highlighted the encouraging role, technologies in segregation of wastes and recycling of beverage cartons. Earth is facing a triple planet emergency and the ecosystem cannot cope up with our rising demands. One must recognize that end consumers and infrastructure both have a role in waste business success.

Dr. Kulwant Singh, Former Regional Advisor Asia UN-HABITAT and the CEO of 3R WASTE Foundation moderated the webinar. The eminent panelists of the webinar were Mr. Choudhury Rudra Charan Mohanty, Environment Programme Coordinator, UNCRD-DSDG/UNDESA, Mr Gyan Prakash Misra, Senior advisor (Waste management), Mosaic Advanced Solutions, Prof. Sadhan K Ghosh, President, ISWMAW, Mr. SN Umakanth, Chief Manager, WOW programme, ITC, Ms. Paramita Datta Dey, Head Waste unit, NIUA, Mr. Sanjiv Kumar, Head, Re Sustainability.

Mr. Choudhury Rudra Charan Mohanty, Environment Programme Coordinator, UNCRD DSDG/UNDESA stated that beverage cartons are the one of the resource efficient packaging. He expressed that we can move towards a Zero waste society by active coordination from Govt, WMA, End users, Companies etc. Beverage cartons are much more efficient in terms of resource efficiency as well as recycling as compared to other formats and hence have a promise to play a bigger role in the circular economy. He also stated that 3R also means resilience and how we manage resources will define resilience. He asserted that affordable solutions and technologies are now available for recycling Beverage Cartons as well as Plastics.

Prof. Sadhan K Ghosh, President, ISWMAW discussed the path for recirculation of plastic packaging and its benefit in the economy. Prof Ghosh asserted that for post-consumer waste the primary responsibility is with the consumer- who should segregate and responsibility dispose of the waste as there is no alternative to source segregation for efficient waste management. Different types of technologies for recycling plastics were briefly discussed. He also stated that to address the problem of waste in the country, reuse and recycling of Beverage cartons is the solution. The prevailing concept of EPCD2 was presented – Extract, produce, Consume, Dispose, & deplete and he highlighted how we cannot continue with the same model of EPCD2 if we want to progress towards a circular economy.

Mr Gyan Prakash Misra, Senior advisor (Waste management), Mosaic Advanced Solutions discussed the difference between linear economy and circular economy and its benefits to the environment as a whole. He also emphasized on the collection and segregation of plastic waste and focused his presentation on 4R’s – Reducing, Recycling, Renewing and Responsibility. The emphasis on Renewing and Responsibility was worth noting. He also noticed that the paper based packaging has potential to be recycled 5-7 times.

Ms. Paramita Datta Dey, Head Waste unit, NIUA discussed sustainable packaging and how it can lower the environmental impact and ecological footprint. Ms. Dey educated on Reusable, Recyclable and Reduced packaging as new practices for adopting the packaging solutions. She cited examples of several packaging materials made from natural materials such as mushroom, bagasse, stone paper, seaweed etc. She also stated that Paper based cartons can be recycled and up scaled 5-7times.

He shared the behavior change program WOW and how emphasis on waste segregation addresses the waste management and resource recovery issues. Critical data that as a country we send valuable paper waste of appx. 25000 MT per day to garbage/ landfills, while we import large quantities of paper waste using foreign currency highlights gaps in appropriate handling of paper waste and missing a big economic opportunity.

Dr. Kulwant Singh while moderating the discussions highlighted that Beverage Carton recyclability effort is aligned to Circular Economy.

Dr. Praveen Aggarwal, CEO of AARC concluded the webinar by thanking the panelists and again emphasizing about the effectiveness of Beverage Cartons and its recyclability which makes it one of the best packaging solution for Food and beverage industry while informing that even now over 50% of the Beverage Cartons are collected and recycled. He summarized the key points of the webinar and shared the learnings from the esteemed panel who presented their expert comments.

Tenable Completes Acquisition of Bit Discovery and Announces Tenable.asm for External Attack Surface Management

Tenable Holdings, Inc. (“Tenable”), the Cyber Exposure company, today announced it has closed its acquisition of Bit Discovery, Inc. (“Bit Discovery”), a leader in external attack surface management (EASM). Tenable will launch Tenable.asm, a new solution that will provide the full capabilities of Bit Discovery’s technology and enable customers to gain a more complete 360-degree view of their full attack surface so they can better understand how attackers could gain access via the internet and help prioritize remediation steps.

Gaining Visibility Into Unseen Risk

An organization’s digital footprint extends far beyond its walls as various services, applications and APIs are internet facing or reside on the internet. To avoid new points of security vulnerability and to ensure good organizational risk management, it is critical for organizations to have visibility into and to understand both known and previously unknown internet-facing assets.

Modern organizations require continuous monitoring of their complete attack surface and context-aware intelligence on where to prioritize remediation efforts. Tenable.asm will continuously map the entire internet and discover connections to an organization’s internet-facing assets, whether internal or external to their networks, to assess the security posture of their entire external attack surface. When used with the rest of Tenable’s solutions, customers will be able to get the context of potential attack paths from external systems to critical assets throughout their organization providing a comprehensive measure of their overall exposure. Tenable.asm is scheduled to be available for purchase early in the third quarter of 2022.

Because the security of internet-facing assets is a top CISO priority and pain point, Tenable is also integrating foundational quarterly attack surface discovery into its existing market-leading cyber exposure solutions at no additional cost to Tenable customers. New capabilities are scheduled to be included in Tenable.io®, Tenable.sc™and Tenable.ep™ early in the third quarter of 2022. A new version of Nessus will also include asset discovery.

“Very few, if any, organizations truly understand their full digital footprint. One of the most common but dangerous security lapses is to misconfigure something in the cloud and make it internet-facing. Organizations increasingly have less of a grasp on which of their assets are exposed,” said Glen Pendley, chief technology officer, Tenable. “Every business or government entity should have advanced capabilities like those found in Tenable.asm, but given the critical security importance of having ASM everywhere, Tenable is making sure that its customers have at least foundational discovery functionality within the solutions they’re already using. This will enable them to spot points of vulnerability that have been completely invisible until now, with the goal of preventing attacks rather than simply managing them.”

Bit Discovery provides Tenable customers with:

Discovery of previously unknown internet-connected assets
Rich context and attribution for domains, sub-domains and other exposed technologies
Continuous monitoring of the constantly changing external attack surface

COAI applauds the Ministry of Power for issuing the Electricity (Promoting Renewable Energy through Green Energy Open Access Rules) Rules 2022

The Electricity (Promoting Renewable Energy through Green Energy Open Access Rules) Rules 2022 were issued by the Ministry of Power. These rules will apply to the generation, purchase, and consumption of green electricity including energy from the Waste-to-Energy facility.  The new regulations will allow consumers to be eligible for open access to green energy if they have a contract demand or a sanctioned load of at least 100 kW. Captive consumers will not be subject to any load limitations.

In various meetings and submissions, COAI raised concerns that the important limitation in the OA policies – that the buyer must have a minimum ‘Connected Load’ typically 1MW, which is being followed by most states. From a telecom perspective, since each tower has an independent electricity connection and consumes about 3 to 5KW, which is much less than 1MW, our member TSPs are unable to make use of renewable sources effectively due to this regulatory bottleneck. Although on an aggregate level, tower sites put together consume much higher.  From a practical standpoint, considering the distribution and spread of mobile towers and limited open area available at the tower site, an on-site solar net metering solution has practical limitations w.r.t. deployment. Hence to deploy renewables at a bigger scale, our member TSPs need renewable energy solutions that can only be provided through Open Access.

Appreciating the directions issued by the Ministry of Power, Lt. Gen. Dr SP Kochhar, Director General said “We are grateful to Chairman, TRAI and Secretary, DoT for their continuous support on taking this issue with the Ministry of Power. We welcome the notification of the Electricity (Promoting Renewable Energy through Green Energy Open Access Rules) Rules 2022 for promoting renewable energy through Green Energy Open Access which prescribes for any consumer who has contracted demand/sanctioned load of 100 kW or more except for captive consumers. However, the Industry has been requesting to Ministry of Power and various State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERC) & Central Electricity Regulatory Commissions (CERC) to allow Telecom Infrastructure Open Access for Solar/Renewal Energy without any policy restrictions on minimum usage or allow Telco’s to aggregate their electricity demands across a number of towers. We hope that this request of the industry will be considered at the earliest.

Telecom connectivity is the lifeline for the country that has kept people and businesses connected throughout the pandemic. The Telecom networks (Tower sites, networks, and telecom Data Centres among others) run 24×7 with 99.95% uptime requirements, and consumers are dependent upon reliable and continuous electricity supply.

COAI’s member TSPs deploy a huge infrastructure of towers across the length and breadth of the country and continuously try to reduce their carbon footprint by deploying solar and other renewable energy solutions in line with the audacious target set by the Government and are committed to it under Paris Accord to achieve energy sustainability and reduce carbon footprint.

Help Your Small Business Securely Grow Using Cloud Email

Most of the small businesses often have a dream of growing big. As the business grows and adds up employees they will have to start thinking about security, backups, remote access and coordination. In a report it was found that the average cost of a data breach increased 10% in 2021 to $4.24million. Small businesses are attractive targets for cybercriminals because they usually lack the cybersecurity precautions and which is affecting the business growth.

Due to less flexibility in small businesses during the pandemic they all had taken a pause. That is where a lot of small businesses decided to get flexible and cloud applications were the answer. One of the best cloud tool was using cloud emails that allow businesses to access software and servers hosted by the software provider in a secure data center which helps employees work remotely. These services are delivered over the Internet in real time.

Small businesses often have very limited resources so they have to be careful about the tools they use. They don’t have the luxury of trying out and paying for expensive software and systems that they might not afford, so it’s important that the solutions they choose are budget friendly and effective from the time of purchase. With all the data that covers their business and their customers, having secure email access. Cloud email stands a better chance for small businesses to communicate effectively and efficiently with their clients to fuel growth. There are several other factors too that affect the decision making for choosing cloud emails.

Reasons for small businesses moving to cloud email:

·     Flexibility: Profit is an essential part for an organization’s growth, and as a business person it is always an aim to maximise it in any way possible. Cloud email provides that opportunity with the pay-as-you-use model, the company saves a significant amount of money on the investment; this is especially important for small businesses as they grow and strive to reach new heights in the competitive world.

·     Remote Computing: Cloud email solutions allow users to work from anywhere at any time if they have a compatible device and a working internet connection; this is especially useful for small businesses that move offices frequently. The business professional will have a requirement to travel frequently to expand their business reach; they may not require a permanent office set up immediately because they will be testing the locality that suits best for their office.

·     Scalability: When compared to large enterprises, small businesses experience more ups and downs. Their market is highly volatile, requiring frequent scaling adjustments. According to a 2022 Guidant Financial survey small businesses reported that 35% of them are not being profitable due to the inflation and labour shortages. These fluctuations may sometimes cause problems in the company’s steady growth. There will be a need for small businesses to expand and open offices in specific locations; the cloud can automatically determine these needs and only charge for services that are utilized.

·     Security: Security breaches are a public threat that every firm has to deal with, but this threat attains a very high gravity when it comes to small businesses. They have the pressure of establishing goodwill in the market and standing out, to flourish. The cloud email helps fortify the security levels of the company’s data in the way of experts who take command of the data to encrypt and secure them from the reach of hackers and making sure that the users data is always backed-up, so there is no need to worry at all about the data.

Cloud solutions have a better advantage over traditional software services and with the compelling advantages that can change the working of small businesses paving a way to growth. From flexibility to affordability, cloud technology gives ample opportunities to small businesses to expand their business. They should be considering certain factors like regulatory shifts, security developments and vendor obsolescence that are transforming, while moving to email outsourcing. Understanding the options available and the key issues to consider when evaluating its impact on the business. To fight in the competitive market and catapult growth in business, it is necessary for small businesses to move to the email cloud.
