As a part of its efforts to transition towards Net Zero, ITC has made significant investments in renewable energy. Currently, clean energy powers 24 factories, 14 hotels, and 5 office buildings of the Company across 14 states. Last year, ITC set a target to meet 100% of its grid electricity requirements from renewable sources by 2030. Currently, it meets around 42% of all its electrical energy requirements through renewable means. With a focus on solar energy, the Company has commissioned both onsite and offsite plants across states. ITC has maximized usage of rooftops of its Integrated Consumer Goods Manufacturing and Logistics (ICML) facilities, factories and warehouses for solar power generation. As many as 39 properties of ITC are Platinum rated green buildings by USGBC-LEED/IGBC. ITC’s Windsor Hotel in Bengaluru became the first hotel in the world to be LEED® Zero Carbon certified, followed by ITC Grand Chola and ITC Gardenia.

To contribute to a ‘Greener Earth’, ITC has also been running an integrated water stewardship programme, covering over 1.33 million acres of land and creating a total rainwater harvesting potential which was over 3 times the net water consumed by its operations during last year. The demand management interventions for promoting water efficiency in agriculture have resulted in potential water savings to the tune of 496.5 million cubic metres till date. Following the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Platinum level certification of ITC’s Paperboards and Specialty Papers unit at Kovai, the first ever site in India to achieve the highest global standard, the Company is in the process of implementing the AWS Standards and obtaining certification at other units in high water stress areas.

Similarly, ITC’s extensive biodiversity programme focusses on reviving ecosystem services provided to agriculture such as natural regulation of pests, pollination, nutrient cycling, soil health retention and genetic diversity, which have witnessed considerable erosion over the past few decades. The initiative has cumulatively covered 1.3 lakh acres in more than 29 districts across 10 states. ITC aims to expand the programme to cover over 10,00,000 acres by 2030.

To derisk agriculture from effects of climate change, ITC has introduced a Climate Smart Agriculture programme, which covers 15 lakh acres, benefitting over 4.5 lakh farmers. As an integral part of this, a Climate Smart Village initiative covering over 2,500 villages and over 8.2 lakh acres, has led to reduction in GHG emissions by up to 66% and an increase in communities’ income by up to 93% for soyabean crop in Madhya Pradesh. ITC’s large-scale social and farm forestry programme has greened over 9,50,000 acres, generating over 173million person days of employment.

Moving towards Circular Economy, the Company went beyond plastic neutrality in 2021-22 by collecting and sustainably managing more than 54,000 tonnes of plastic waste across 35 states/union territories. ITC’s flagship solid waste management programme, ITC ‘WOW – Well Being Out of Waste’ programme, has covered over 1.8 crore citizens providing sustainable livelihood to more than 17,300 waste collectors.

In line with its Vision for a sustainable packaging future, ITC’s Paperboards and Packaging Businesses have leveraged cutting-edge research and innovation capabilities of ITC Life Sciences and technology Centre to launch several first-of-its kind packaging solutions, which facilitate reduction, substitution and recyclability of plastic. The Company is now endeavouring to ensure that over the next decade, 100% of its packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable/biodegradable.

Queensland, Australia offers horizon of opportunities to Indian business community

Welcoming over 12,000 millionaires in 2019, Australia has emerged as the most preferred migration destination for high net-worth individuals worldwide. Australia has one of the most conducive environments in the world to do business and has a very strong and robust economy. Queensland, Australia, is emerging as the preferred destination for migrants due to the excellent handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and opportunities in the education, minerals, renewable, and agriculture sectors.

The interim Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement further boosts the strong relationship between the two countries. The agreement will eliminate tariffs on over 95per cent of the goods and services on Indian exports to Australia. Australia will also gain sizeable market access in India, with tariffs being eliminated on more than 85 percent of the Australian goods and services exports to India. At the end of June 2019, 660,350 Indian-born people were living in Australia, more than twice the number (307,590) on 30 June 2009 and this is further expected to increase. This makes the Indian-born population the third largest migrant community in Australia.

Mr. Abhinav Bhatia, Senior Trade & Investment Commissioner – South Asia, Trade & Investment Queensland, addressed the audience, including senior business leaders, at a seminar organized by Phoenix Business Advisory. Explaining the decision-making factors during migration and why Queensland is the preferred choice, he stated, “With a growing economy and excellent quality of life, Queensland is a choice many immigrants and Australians are making to put down roots. Due to the Queensland Government’s successful handling of the Covid- 19 pandemic, Queensland has seen the highest interstate migration in the last 20 years. Brisbane (the capital city of Queensland) being the host city for the 2032 Olympics and Paralympic Games, has provided a catalyst leading to various developmental projects and business opportunities in many industries. Furthermore, Queensland has closer ties with India than other Australian states, contributing 60.7 percent to national export value in 2021. These factors and proactive support by Migration Queensland make us the ideal choice for Indian investors and innovators.”

The event offered a platform for interested individuals to interact, which guided entrepreneurs with information about important policies, visas, and migration procedures to set up their business.

Being well connected with the rest of the world, Queensland, provides an excellent opportunity for the Indian business community. Moreover, migrants can access top-quality education and healthcare by making the state home. Under the Queensland Business Nomination program, innovators and investors can apply for migration to Queensland (Visa Sub class: 188) by exploring the various business opportunities. Hacks to Make Your Home Eco-friendly

World Environment Day is celebrated every year to emphasise the significance of environmental protection. The theme for 2022 is ‘Only One Earth’ and this year, the focus is on living sustainably and in harmony with nature. When it comes to sustainable living and using energy-efficient solutions, we often miss looking at ways in which we can incorporate this as a ritual into our homes. Our everyday home appliances are a boon to us as it makes our lives easy and comfortable, but using them wisely can also help us save energy and contribute to a healthier environment.

One of the best ways to invest in our planet is to become more conscious about the energy use in our daily life, especially in our homes. Energy efficiency involves using less energy to do the same tasks, reducing energy waste along with saving on electricity bills. We need to be aware of the use of energy in our everyday lives.

Here are some quick tips for making your home more energy-efficient from Voltas and Voltas Beko-

Upgrade your appliances

While upgrading your appliances, look at the Energy Efficiency Rating (EER)as one of the key components. The higher the EER value, the energy-efficient your AC will be.You must choose appliances that are 5 Star rated as that will reduce energy consumption by significant levels. When it comes to air conditioners for your home, choose ACs that come with Adjustable Tonnage Mode that allows the user to switch within multiple tonnages, depending on the ambient heat or number of people in the room. Look for eco-friendly refrigerants such as the Green R32 refrigerant in your room ACs as it lessens the carbon footprint too.

Another way to do this is using appliances like dishwashers, instead of manual cleaning as it reduces usage of water significantly.

Using home appliances the right way

Your home is full of consumer appliances and making them efficient and keeping the energy consumption low is your responsibility. Here are the different ways to help your appliances consume lesser energy-

  • Refrigerators – Apart from star rating, look at refrigerators that come with brushless ProSmartTM Inverter Motor that keeps the wear and tear down for a durable and long-lasting cooling experience and ensures up to 70 per cent energy efficiency. To avoid overcooling and wasting electricity, set your refrigerator’s temperature to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Also, keep in mind that refrigerators and freezers are most efficient when they are filled, so keep them moderately full. At the same time avoid overfilling them because this reduces ventilation and makes the appliance work harder.

  • Washing Machines – Keeping the watertemperature of your washing machine low and avoiding half loads whenever possible will lead to lesser energy consumption. Opt for a 5-star rated washingmachine that provides superior wash quality with minimal water usage and is energy efficient. Using washing machines at night is a wise idea as it will keep the house cooler, lessen the strain on the electricity grid during peak consumption hours between4 p.m.- 6 p.m., and lower the risk of an emergency! You can look at the Voltas Beko’s washing machines that comes with dynamic functions like Gentle Wave™ system and Prosmart™ Inverter Motor, a function that enhances the machine’s performance while consuming less energy.

  • Dishwashers – Contrary to popular belief, using dishwashers is not only more hygienic but also ensures that our resources are used more effectively. A dishwasher saves time and provides far more optimized use of water and electricity. Modern dishwashers can use less amount of water to clean the dishes efficiently because of technology like AquaIntense TM that provides intense water pressure to clean heavily soiled pots and pans and helps in lowering the energy consumption too.

  • Room Air Conditioners – When using an air conditioner in the warmer months, close blinds, shades and drapes on the sunny side of your home to help keep your home’s temperature cooler and reduce the work for your AC. Open shades during cooler months to let the sun warm your home. Keep the AC temperature at an optimum level and not the coolest. This ensures that the cooling is consistent and also reduces energy consumption. The indoor temperature should be closer to the outdoor temperature, rather than being at the lowest possible setting.

Give appliances a break!

Much like yourself, your devices need a break too! Running them continuously and especially, utilizing all functions exhausts them and leads to early breakage or reduced life. It is important to shut them off when not in use and ensure that they are not running throughout the day. Also, turn off the main switches of appliances and unplug the idle electronics when you are not at home and especially away for vacations. This will ensure, your appliances get a break too while you are away.

Making all these changes might seem like a big task, but when one person starts bringing that change, a snowballing effect is created. To bring that change, we need to first start it from our homes. Making conscious efforts in our everyday lives to ensure an energy-efficient home will lead us towards a sustainable and better future.
