Meals On Wheels needs volunteers to help deliver food packs for hurricane season on June 12

Tampa, FL. — Tampa Bay Network to End Hunger (TBNEH), a tri-county leader in hunger relief, research and program development, will deliver hurricane food packs on Saturday, June 12th, to all Meals On Wheels St. Petersburg (MOWSP) and Meals On Wheels for Kids (MOW4Kids) recipients in preparation for this year’s hurricane season. The agency needs volunteers to sign up to deliver the hurricane packs which will include nonperishable food for up to five days and a hurricane resource guide with shelter information and an emergency checklist. The hurricane packs are provided in partnership with Metropolitan Ministries and St. Petersburg Free Clinic.

Many Meals on Wheels recipients are transportation disadvantaged, homebound and/or elderly. With the simple act of knocking on someone’s door, the Network is providing safety checks in addition to a hot meal. With the hurricane packs, the programs can provide a little more safety in the event a storm hits again this year.

MOWSP and MOW4Kids were developed to serve children, seniors, and 18+ homebound individuals (due to illness, injury, or disability) with meals delivered to their home, by a volunteer, each week. MOWSP is an alternative option for: 1) people placed on a waiting list; or 2) people who do not qualify for other programs due to age or income. MOW4Kids, was developed to serve children, 18 years or younger, with meals delivered to their home when school is out of session or when learning remotely. MOW4Kids is an alternative option for kids that are not able to access meal distribution sites; and/or 2) kids that have difficulty accessing food pantries. The program currently serves areas throughout Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Pasco Counties.

Community members interested in delivering hurricane food packs on Saturday, June 12 can sign up to deliver a route out of the following locations: Hope Villages of America (formerly RCS Pinellas) in Clearwater, Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa, Farmworker’s Self Help in Dade City, and Community Congressional Church in New Port Richey. Routes will take about 1 hour to complete.

MOW4Kids was developed to serve children, 18 years or younger, with meals delivered to their home by volunteers when school is out of session or when learning remotely. MOW4Kids is an alternative option for kids that are not able to access meal distribution sites; and/or 2) kids that have difficulty accessing food pantries. The program currently serves areas throughout Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Pasco Counties.

Volunteers are needed each week to help pack boxes of food Community Congressional Church in New Port Richey. Volunteers with level 2 background checks are needed to help deliver Meals On Wheels for Kids on Tuesdays in this area starting at 10 AM. Volunteers drive their own vehicles to deliver shelf-stable boxes of food and cold meal packs to children and families. Routes take about 60 minutes to complete.

At the core of this Meals on Wheels program is nutritious food delivered to the homes of children and their families. The program provides meals, shelf-stable groceries, including produce, as resources allow. Children may experience an increase in overall nutrition, food security, and feelings of social connectedness from volunteers stopping by.

Network to End Hunger expands program into Pasco County to divert food surplus from waste stream

Creating a regenerative community food system in partnership with the Pasco Food Policy Advisory Council

TAMPA, FL– Tampa Bay Network to End Hunger (TBNEH), a tri-county leader in hunger relief, research, and program development, expands Creating a Regenerative Community Food System (CRCFS) program into Pasco County to help divert food surplus from the waste stream, in partnership with the Pasco Food Policy Advisory Council. The program will be a part of the FPAC’s Plant for Pasco initiative with hopes to inspire and educate community members to sustainably manage their food, in a more responsible and impactful way.

To prevent and divert wasted food from its associated impacts, multiple components of the program address different layers of the Food Recovery Hierarchy, recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency. The top levels of the hierarchy are the best ways to prevent and divert wasted food because they create the most benefits for the environment, society, and the economy. In order of most preferred to least, the different levels of preventing food waste include source reduction, redistribution (donating extra food to food banks, soup kitchens and shelters), feeding animals, and composting.

“We are excited to launch a program that is much needed in Pasco County,” said Caitlyn Peacock, Executive Director. “Our goal is to change the way our food surplus is integrated into the community food system, which ultimately supports our Network’s mission of creating a sustainable, community-based food system to provide access to nutritious food for all. This unique initiative allows our local businesses and consumers to feel empowered to provide a bridge in our communities for those who do not have enough to eat, while conserving resources and saving money.”

Launched in 2017 in Hillsborough County, the program allows community members to collaborate by reducing food waste in the waste management system while improving their local communities. Through free educational classes and an easy-to-use food collection, donation and pickup system for excess food or scraps via the “Waste No Food” app, this program will help change food waste behaviors in our community. Efforts will include increasing partnerships between local farms and non-profit agencies with food needs. This program expansion is presented in partnership with Pasco Food Policy Advisory Council.

Community members are invited to visit the program’s website www.networktoendhunger.org for information and tools for diverting food from the waste system, including redistribution and composting. Visitors will learn how they can donate extra food to hungry community members and how easy the composting process can be.

“Although not new, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted many areas of concern with our current food system and reminded us of the importance of continuing our collective work to create a more equitable, resilient, local food system in Pasco County. It is heartbreaking to think about people going hungry when there is so much food entering our waste system. Giving farmers and businesses an easy way to connect to non-profit agencies who distribute food to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity is a huge benefit of this program. Changing our food waste behaviors and reducing food insecurity has the potential to impact our environmental and economic health and improve the overall well-being of the community,” stated Patty Jackson, long-time resident of Pasco County and member of the Pasco Food Policy Advisory Council.

The program relies on over 125 volunteers to help deliver lunchtime meals to children who are learning remotely and are at risk of going hungry.

The Network’s innovative MOW4Kids program, the first program of its kind, launched last March in response to COVID-19 school closures. MOW4Kids is an alternative option for kids that are not able to access meal distribution sites throughout the county; and/or 2) kids that have difficulty accessing food pantries.

Volunteer are needed to help pack boxes of food at Community Stepping Stones (CSS) (1101 E River Cove St) and TC Delivers (7002 Parke E Blvd) in Tampa on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week. Deliveries occur on Mondays and Wednesdays out of CSS and Mort Elementary School (1806 E Bearss Ave East). Background checked volunteers drive their own vehicles to deliver shelf stable boxes of food and cold meal packs to children and families. Delivery begins at 10AM and routes take about 60 minutes to complete.
