HelpLIS-Mission stands with the Librarian Community in India during coronavirus Pandemic

Bhubaneswar (31/05/2021). The coronavirus pandemic has confronted the global community with an unprecedented situation. The unprecedented challenges have to be met with unusual initiatives. The second wave of Covid-19 is taking away the lives of many Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals globally, and India is not an exception to it. A significant number of LIS professionals are struggling for their survival. While the families of those working in government and well-established institutions are adequately compensated/supported, those in private establishments are receive meager or no support at all. In such difficult times, a group of LIS Professional Associations joined together and have decided to assist Covid-19 affected professionals and their families. Now, this mission is known as HelpLIS-Mission (www.helplis-mission.org/).

Odisha Library Academy (OLA) feeling proud to be a part of this mission to coordinate the eastern region of India. In this regard, a virtual meeting was organized by Odisha Library Academy on 31st May 2021 evening. OLA president Dr. Banamber Sahoo reported to the media “HelpLIS-Mission is the first mission in India which is specially standing with the Librarian Community during coronavirus Pandemic. Hope all the Library Associations in India will be coming together and exhibit their solidarity to the Librarian community.”

Odisha Library Academy celebrated Librarian’s Day and its 5th Annual Day Virtually

Bhubaneswar Aug 9: Odisha Library Academy (OLA), a professional group of young library and Information science professionals was established on 9th August 2015 on the eve of Librarians Day. Every year OLA celebrates librarian’s day as well as its annual day followed by a conference or seminar. Due to COVID19 pandemic situation, the academy organised its 5th annual day, a celebration of Librarians day and a panel discussion on Potency of Library:

Past, Present and Future virtually. Professor Ashoka Kumar Das, Vice chairman of Odisha Higher Education Council and former Vice Chancellor Utkal University joined as chief guest. Professor Das elaborated the important role of Librarians and library staffs for the career of a student and highlighted the importance of library for an educational institution. He said the quality of an institute looks from its library, so development of libraries and Librarians is more important for the education system. He also suggested to constitute an advisory committee for the development of libraries and Librarians community in Odisha.

Organising secretaryMr. Niranjan Mohapatra started the programme with a welcome address and president of OLA Dr. Banamber Sahoo gave the Presidential address. Senior Professionals and Professors i.e. Prof. P.V. Konnur, Dr. Daulat Jotwani, Dr. M.P. Tapaswi, Prof. R.N. Mishra had joined as panelists in the panel discussion and Dr. D.B. Ramesh moderate the session.

The Programme was concluded with vote of thanks by the Secretary of OLA Dr. Basudev Mohanty. Odisha Library Academy also celebrated the 128th birth anniversary Dr. S R Ranganatha, the father of Library Science, Information Science and Documentation who born on 9th August 1892. He was honoured with Padmashri Award by Government of India in 1957 for his valuable contributions to Library Science and honoured him with a rare title of “National Research Professor. Every year 12th August, the official birthday of Dr. SR Ranganathan) is being celebrated as National Librarian’s Day in India who had spearheaded library development in India.

Restaurant should have a library to promote reading habit among people: Nila Madhab Panda

Bhubaneswar: Bollywood Film Maker and Director Nila Madhab Panda & Ollywood Actor Chandan Kar joined as speakers in the 12th webinar series of Odisha Library Academy held on 1st August 2020 (Saturday) at 11 a.m on the theme, “Promoting Libraries through Movies.” It’s a rare gathering where Dignitaries, Celebrities, Fans, and Dynamic Library Professionals gathered in one platform.

In this webinar, two celebrity speakers and four panelists had joined. Padma Shree Dr. Nila Madhab Panda who is a unique film Director & Producer and Mr. Chandan Kar who is an actor, philanthropist and IT professional have joined as speakers on this occasion. Prof. Ramesh Chandra Gaur, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi, Dr. Bibhuti Bhusan Sahoo, IIT Bhubaneswar, Dr. Satya Ranjan Sahoo, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar and Mr. Bijoy Ketan Panda, TCS Bhubaneswar as panelists. Padma Shree Dr. Nila Madhab Panda highlighted changing a traditional library system to become a community center, suggested to initiate small libraries in restaurants, and requested the public to go to the library rather than going to the temple. He finally concludes his speech by giving the commitment to promote the library system by small documentaries in the coming days. Another speaker Mr. Chandan Kar highlighted the importance of libraries in everyone’s life and he also suggested shooting out small content through social media. He expressed his interest in promoting libraries and be a brand ambassador of Libraries in Odisha. In the end, the four panelists discuss to promote libraries and librarians. The webinar ended with a question and answer session.

OLA President Dr. Banamber Sahoo Chaired and Dr. Bedarata Dash Hota along with Dharitri Mallick organized the event. To host the session technical support was provided by Mr. Niranjan Mohapatra, Mr. Jayanta Kumar Sahu, and Mr. Satyajit Nayak as Webinar System Administrators. More than 400 concurrent participants joined the online session and asked different issues faced by their Libraries and Information Centres for promoting Library services.

The session ended with vote of thanks by Mr. Bijay Ketan Panda, Joint Secretary of Odisha Library Academy, Dr. Banamber Sahu informed to the media houses that this year Librarian’s Day celebration and 5th Annual meet of Odisha Library Academy will be held on 9th August 2020 through an online and virtual platform.

To help out professionals working in All types of Libraries/ Information Centers, Odisha Library Academy holds regular webinars and webcasts to address various professional topics on current trends practices. Odisha Library Academy serves the library community by adopting various virtual meetings in multiple digital platforms.

A part of Odisha Library Academy Study Circle, OLA has successively conducted ten consecutive webinars after the Coronavirus pandemic spread across the world and discussed a variety of topics by renowned experts across the globe including Motivational talk by Mr. Tapas Dasmohapatra on our 10th Webinar series. OLA hosted its 11th webinar on July 25, 2020 (Saturday) at 11:00 am on the theme, “School Libraries & Librarian.”

Dr. Suman Bhattacharya, Director, CAAS & Head NextGen Learning, KIIT Deemed to be University Bhubaneswar talked about Outcome-Based Effective Learning through Technology Intervention and Dr. Rashmi Kumbar, Assistant Professor, School of Library & Information Science, she talked about School Librarians can make a Difference where the theme’s resource person. Dr. Suman Bhattacharya highlighted the challenges faced by the library professionals which can be overcome by adopting different advanced technologies. He also described the adoption of blended learning systems, interactive learning methodology, and tools used for teaching in virtual classrooms.

Along with Dr. Suman Bhattacharya, Dr. Rashmi Kumbar create awareness to the teachers and students through 4Cs like developing Library Culture, Collaborative learning system, efforts for continuous professional development and 4th C used for coping with COVID 19 by giving an example of National Digital Library of India, National Science Digital Library and International Children’s Digital Library.

Dr. Banamber Sahoo, President OLA presided the webinar as Chair Person, and Mr. Jitendra Das along with Dr. Debabrata Das coordinate the event. To host the session technical support was provided by Mr. Niranjan Mohapatra, Mr. Barada Kanta Mohanty, and Mr. Satyajit Nayak as Webinar System Administrators. More than 500 concurrent participants joined the online session and asked different issues faced by their Libraries. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Mr. Bijoy Ketan Panda, Joint Secretary Odisha Library Academy.
