SIAM hosts 19th Lecture Series on ‘Vision Sustainable Mobility: Implications of CoP26’

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the apex automobile industry body, organized the 19th lecture under SIAM lecture series on ‘Vision Sustainable Mobility: Implications of CoP26’ viz. imperatives of decarbonization, carbon credits, reducing carbon emissions, attaining net-zero emission status, etc. The lecture highlighted the policy, regulatory and legislative framework for decarbonization and sustainable mobility which were recently talked about at the CoP26 summit. SIAM organized this lecture to give the industry perspective towards climate change and to showcase the pathways India can achieve the Net Zero emissions status.

Segmented into two sessions, the lecture witnessed senior Government officials, industry stalwarts, and experts discussing the vision for sustainable mobility which can help in attaining new net-zero CO2 emissions status in the future.

Mr Prashant K Banerjee, Executive Director, SIAM, stated that “With the ongoing discussions around CoP26 deliberations, the eminent speakers and experts from Industry, Government and OEM’s gathered around to throw light on the industry’s perspective towards CoP26 and showcased the way India is poised to achieve net zero-emission status. Decarbonization, low carbon strategies, and carbon neutrality are some of the profound topics of discussion and therefore, form an integral part of India’s strategy towards achieving sustainability.”

The Guest of Honor Mr Rajnath Ram, Advisor (Power and Energy), NITI Aayog, Government of India, stated, “Low emission energy systems are undoubtedly a priority for the country and we are very much committed towards a sustainable future. I truly feel that our experiences can inspire other aspiring countries when it comes to sustainable energy development. Since our transport sector accounts for 20-22% of carbon emissions, decarbonization of the transport sector is vital. I believe that Zero-emission mobility is the future. The growth of EVs will have a cascading impact on the economy and biofuels and green hydrogen will play a huge role in this transition.”

Mr Rajendra Petkar, Co-Chairman, SIAM Sustainable Mobility Group and President and CTO, Tata Motors Ltd, said, “The Indian Automobile sector has adopted an environmentally sustainable strategy that meets its energy efficiency goals, be it adopting technologically advanced fuel-efficient products or for that matter, non-polluting vehicles. We have been aggressively looking towards lowering our carbon footprint and achieving carbon neutrality. Many OEMs have set targets keeping in mind India’s goal of attaining carbon neutrality by 2070. In the Paris agreement and CoP26 deliberations, there was an increased thrust for adapting and implementing environmentally benefitting imperatives through reduced usage of fossil fuels.”

On this occasion, Dr Srinivas Shroff Nagesh Rao, Former CEO, REC Foundation and Advisor to UNDP, made a presentation on the theme, “The Road to Net Zero Carbon Emissions, Sustainable Mobility in the backdrop of CoP26”.

In his special address, Mr R R Rashmi, IAS, Sr. Fellow, TERI, discussed various aspects of energy transition pathways towards Net Zero Emissions & Sustainable Mobility: Challenges and Opportunities while giving an insight into the future of sustainable mobility in India.

Giving an overview on Glasgow declaration/agreement at CoP26, Prof Abhishek Malhotra, School of Public Policy, IIT, Delhi, and Prof B K Panigrahi, Center for Automotive Research and Tribology, IIT, Delhi, focusing on the implications for the automotive sector with outlining a national perspective. Dr Inderjeet Singh, Director & Lead, ESG, and Carbon Markets, Deloitte India, explained the environment, social and governance (ESG), and carbon credit market showcasing pathways to reach net-zero emissions. Mr Vinay Deodhar, Senior Clean Energy & Climate Change Consultant, ADB, gave an overview of India’s Green initiatives- Renewable Energy, EVs, Resource Efficiency, Low Carbon Fuels, cleantech. solutions etc.

Mr Amit Bhatt, Director, WRI, threw light on the international perspective on the Decarbonization of passenger transport. Showcasing the national scenario Ms Kiran Sarkar, Deputy General Manager – Sustainability Mahindra Group Sustainability Office, laid emphasis on Mainstreaming Low Carbon Strategies in Vehicle Manufacturing, Value and Supply Chains. Mr Karan Mangotra, Senior Climate Change Specialist, The World Bank, gave an overview on India’s Five Points (Panchamrits) and Carbon Neutrality and financial mechanism under deliberated at COP 26 at Glasgow.

Mr Ruchir Shukla, Director, Electric Mobility Program, Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, moderated the sessions.

With discussions and deliberation on India’s Carbon strategies to attain Carbon Neutrality, India’s green Initiatives, environmental and social governance (ESG) & carbon credit market, therefore, SIAM’s lecture series officially concluded on a high note, with a rich and insightful exchange of ideas, best practices, and strategies.

SIAM, ATMA & ITTAC organizes 2nd Series of virtual seminar on Road Safety Advocacy for Tyres

New Delhi: The Indian apex automotive industry body, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) along with Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) & Indian Tyre Technical Advisory Committee (ITTAC) today led its 2nd edition of ‘Road Safety Advocacy for Tyres’ on a virtual platform. The seminar themed ‘Technology & Environmental Challenges’, this 2nd Series is a part of a Tri Virtual Series.

Under the ‘Tri Series Seminar’, ATMA-SIAM is organizing three sessions to spread awareness on various aspects of tyre care, road safety, and sustainability to advocate the road safety mission by MoRTH, Govt. of India. While the first series focused on tyre and road safety, the second one is emphasising on technology and environmental issues, and the third series will be on standards, regulations and sustainability.

The 2nd edition of the virtual program witnessed the participation of government officials as well as industry leaders and subject experts, who deliberated upon topics such as Sustainable Mobility and Technology & Environmental Challenges.

In his opening remark, Mr Prashant K Banerjee, Executive Director, SIAM, said, “The tyre sector is one of the most regulated one, but the irony is that despite being one of the most critical component for a safe drive the tyres don’t get enough attention. I believe that tyres deserve to be dealt on priority and with more respect therefore, this is important to spread awareness amongst the users.”

On the occasion, the Chief Guest, Mr Ravi Agarwal, Additional Secretary, MoEF & CC, said, “This initiative by SIAM, ATMA and ITTA will go a long way in creating awareness about tyre-maintenance and safety. Also, there is no doubt about the fact that automobiles are the true indicators of economic well-being of the country. There is a lot of potential for research in this area as it has a widespread impact on the environment as well as the economy. Also, a practical and sustainable model for extended producer economy in the domain of tyres must be constituted. The concept of a circular economy is important for the management of tyres from the design stage to the end of product lifecycle.”

Mr Rajiv Budhraja, Director General, ATMA, said, “Road safety and tyre-care are very much part of the inner core functioning of our association. In first phase, we connected closely with the users, further in second phase, we touched product, sustainability and environment and in the third and final phase, we will be connecting with influencers and policy makers. Life-safety is of utmost importance and deserves more attention in awareness campaign. And now the time is RIPE for tyres and safety elements that are associated. We call this RIPE, where R stands for Respect, I for information, P for practice and E for educate.”

During inaugural session Mr Ravin Kurian, Chairman, ITTAC also highlighted the commitment of industry along with the challenges to attain low rolling resistance and improving hostile environment for tyres.

Today, followed by inaugural session, the first Presentation session on ‘Scenario towards Sustainable Mobility’ was hosted by Mr Tom Thomas, Ex. Executive Director, R&D, Technology and Projects, CEAT; Dr K Rajkumar, Director, IRMRA; Mr V K Misra, Director Technical, J K Tyre & Industries Ltd. They respectively presented technical papers on sustainable- mobility: emerging new raw materials scenario, role of rubber industry in environment sustainability and end of life: Tyre Management. The session was moderated by Mr P K Mohamed, Chief Advisor – R&D, Apollo Tyres.

The second presentation-session was conducted on Technology & Environmental Challenges. In this session, Dr D Balakrishnan, General Manager, Ashok Leyland Ltd presented on the Challenges pertaining to commercial vehicle tyres. Another expert, Dr Cyrille Roget, Innovation and Scientific Communication Director, Michelin (Europe) shared his thoughts on Sustainable Mobility: Technology Trends & Development. Mr Anand Kulkarni, Vice President (Product Line EV), Tata Motors Ltd presented on ‘Tyre Requirement for EVs – Future Perspective. The second presentation session was moderated by Mr Renji Issac, VP (R&D) and Technology, CEAT Ltd.

As aforementioned, SIAM-ATMA and ITTAC will continue the endeavours and organize one more remaining session due under the Road Safety Advocacy Tri Series on the “Regulation and Sustainability” in October 2021.

SIAM celebrates 6th United Nation’s Global Road Safety Week

New Delhi: Honouring its mission to spread awareness around road safety and commemorate the United Nation’s 6th Global Road Safety Week, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Celebrated this biennial event held during 17th – 23rd May 2021 with lectures and discussions on road safety and with an objective to educate students about safety standards and protocols related to vehicular mobility. Centred on the theme Streets for Life #Love30, in association with Delhi Traffic Police, SIAM reached out to more than 2000 students participating from 25 schools in Delhi-NCR and organized a week-long programme focusing on the theme, Streets for Life. Multiple contests and engagement activities were also conducted on virtual platforms.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Prashant K Banerjee, Executive Director, SIAM urged people to be mindful of risk associated with speed and ensure our streets become accessible and safer for all. As per WHO report, low-speed streets save lives as a 5% cut in average vehicle speed can result in significant decrease in fatal crashes.

Over the last two decades, SIAM, in close association with Delhi Police, and many other stakeholders have consistently been undertaking multiple initiatives, as well as, creating awareness on road safety. Even during these unprecedented times, police & traffic workers are on the field performing their duties diligently, across the nation. As a mark of respect to their contribution in keeping the wheels of economy moving, SIAM would like to urge every road user to follow road safety rules and regulations and help in building safer roads for everyone. SIAM strongly believes that the collaborative efforts of all citizens in making the roads safer would help build the Nation, Responsibly.
