Sweden And India Join Forces To Tackle Key Issues On Safe And Sustainable Transportation

New Delhi: The Embassy of Sweden, the Consulate General of Sweden in Mumbai and the Swedish Institute are organizing a 42-hour digital Sweden-India Mobility Hackathon: Changing the way we move! on February 26-28, 2021.The mission of the hackathon is to design, test and execute ideas for the future – with a particular focus on mobility.

Sweden and India have joined forces to tackle important issues regarding safe and sustainable transportation. Which is why this hackathon is a designer sprint-like event in which participants collaborate intensively on digital innovations to create functioning solutions to predetermined challenges by the end of the event namely – Lethal accidents in traffic, Safe and sustainable transport, Air pollution/ emissions from traffic sector, Infrastructure for connected vehicle and Sustainable logistics.

Students, entrepreneurs, innovation enthusiasts, developers, designers, creatives and mobility experts across India and Sweden are invited to participate in the Hackathon, to innovate and co-create on the topic of the future of sustainable mobility sector, to work on industry challenges and develop solutions and proof of concepts.

The theme has a strong connection to the Joint Innovation Partnership that exists between India and Sweden and the Sweden-India Transport Safety & Innovation Platform (SITIS) which was launched in February 2020 SITIS was launched in Stockholm, in the presence of Mr. Nitin Gadkari, Indian Minister of Transport & Highways, Government of India and Mr. Thomas Eneroth, Minister for Infrastructure, Government of Sweden.

Speaking about the initiative, Mr. Klas Molin, Ambassador of Sweden to India said: “Sustainable transport and road safety are areas that our governments are deeply engaged in. As emissions, traffic accidents and inefficient traffic flows characterize more and more of the world’s major cities, the hack aims to, develop solutions to these problems. We are delighted that the Swedish Institute is organizing a Sweden-India Mobility Hackathon on this subject in the end of February, with the Embassy of Sweden and the Consulate General in Mumbai as partners. It’s very encouraging to see that several Indian organizations and companies have joined the hackathon as partners.”

The Hackathon is led by the Swedish Institute with support from several Swedish and Indian partners including startups, incubators, research institutes, innovation cells, road safety organizations and companies in sectors of sustainability, automotives and transport.

Ms. Madeleine Sjöstedt, Director-General of the Swedish Institute,said, “Sweden and India have come together to tackle important issues regarding safe and sustainable transportation. Issues that affect us all. Leading companies, experts and top talents from both our countries have joined, and we are full of expectations of what ideas, solutions and connections this hackathon will be the beginning of.”

The participants will have access to a unique network of major Swedish and Indian companies and institutes and will work to solve questions based on open data sources. The winners will get to pitch ideas and receive guidance from the partners to further develop, realize and implement their solutions. Institutions and universities are also invited to join as key partners in recruiting talent, providing guidance and supporting co-creation, innovation and sustainability. Professors, Leaders, Engineering, Transport and Creative experts are also encouraged to enroll as Mentors whose aim would be to guide and support their assigned teams on the mobility challenges.

India Unlimited in association with Embassy of India in Sweden, Sweden India Business Council and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will jointly host India Sweden Innovation Day 2020 themed at “The New Normal” on 27th November 2020. The event will focus on the role of public-private partnerships in the new normal, re-engineering the India Sweden growth again and to call for action across five stages: Determination, Reform, Innovation, Resilience, Re-imagination for the crisis of today to the next normal that will emerge post-Covid-19.

Up to 500 delegates from across the world are expected to attend this one-day event. It will bring together stakeholders from governments to other key organisations, allowing those with power to talk about Energy Partnership, Safe Transport, Innovation collaboration, Sustainable Business Models, Civil and Cyber Security, Health Tech, Skilling and Tech start-ups.

Discussing the trends of innovations today, Robin Sukhia Secretary-General and President of the Sweden-India Business Council (SIBC) said, ”There are two key happenings this year that have driven the urgency for disruptive technologies: The pandemic and the impact of climate change. Innovation is no longer a choice, but it really is the lifeblood for all of our businesses as we go forward and we need to take the creative side and put up some structures. Cross border initiatives and collaborations is the way forward”

Speaking about the event, Sanjoo Malhotra CEO India Unlimited said, “Covid -19 has been the greatest disruptor in recent history & now we are entering a new era of responsible and disruptive tech Innovation that is inclusive, cares for the planet and creates impact. Innovation is the key to solve some of the complex challenges across the globe & we will have to look at how India and Sweden together can navigate this crisis and create a sustainable future for both the countries. The decade ahead will be ruled by innovations & technologies but only if they are used responsibly and ethically.”

Adding to this Mr..Klas Molin, Sweden Ambassador to India said, “Since Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sweden in 2018, the innovation partnership has become the flagship our of relations with India and gained strength, a common thread running through all our areas of collaborations, for example, health, road safety, sustainable technology. Sweden is India’s trusted innovation partner as we build back better!”

The event aims to deepen the collaboration between the governments of Sweden and India in the field of innovation through a strategic innovation partnership and is based on a mutual commitment to drive prosperity and address global challenges such as sustainable development, health- tech etc.

Sweden Aims For Space At Bengaluru Tech Summit

Team Sweden participated in Bengaluru Tech Summit, the flagship technology event of the Government of Karnataka, with a country session called ‘Sweden India Space Technology Collaboration for a Sustainable Future’ to support ongoing and future dialogues between the two countries in the field of space technologies, ground station networks, R&D and Innovations.

Sweden and India have an MoU in Space since 1986 and the area for collaboration was further mentioned in the Sweden-India Joint Action Plan, agreed by Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018. The Sweden India Joint Action plan highlights collaboration on space research, technology, innovation and applications.

India has recently created National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) to provide a level playing field for private companies to use Indian space infrastructure. This is part of reforms aimed at giving a boost to private sector participation in the entire range of space activities.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Klas Molin, Ambassador of Sweden to India, said, “It’s great to participate in the BTS in Bengaluru, the tech capital of India, home to ISRO and several Swedish-Indian companies. I am also happy to be addressing a longstanding area of Swedish-Indian cooperation today – space! Today, we’re taking another important step by bringing together experts and interested parties who will explore possibilities for further Swedish Indian collaboration on and in space, including commercially!”

The stellar panel this afternoon, comprised Mr. G. Narayanan, CMD, New Space India Limited (NSIL) who gave a special address, Mr. Laxmesh BH, Head of Missiles & Aerospace Business, Larsen & Toubro Defence, Mr. S. M. Vaidya, Executive VP & Business Head, Godrej Aerospace, Mr. Christer Fuglesang, Astronaut, Group Strategy, SAAB, Ms. Anna Maria Johansson, Head of Legal Affairs and International Relations, Swedish National Space Agency (SNSA), and Ms. Miranda Pirrie, President Satellite Management Services Division and Member of Executive team, Swedish Space Corporation (SSC). The discussion was moderated by Dr Olle Norberg, Vice Rector for Space, Luleå University of technology. The opening remarks were given by Ambassador Molin.

Ms Cecilia Hertz, CEO Umbilical Designs made a presentation on Space Technology and Agenda 2030 – How Sweden is spearheading the use of technology in the work to implement the Global Goals.
