Longest river ropeway project in India completes one year

The iconic construction marvel and the longest river passenger ropeway with supporting towers deep inside the mighty Brahmaputra River has completed its one year of operation recently. The construction work on the project was started and taken forward during the time of pandemic, with around 10 engineers and 40+ skilled laborers. The company during the completion of the project faced a great deal of challenges in transportation of heavy materials (weighing close to 25-40 tonnes) across the turbulent river. One of the supporting towers weighing close to 50 tonnes stands tall on the famous tourist site- Umananda island, it is the smallest inhabited river island.

Elaborating upon the public’s response received towards the ropeway project, Mr. Aditya Chamaria, Managing Director, Damodar Ropeway and Infra Limited said, “The ropeway project ever since its operations has received 50,000 visitors in one year, and the daily visitor population nowadays is going close to 700. People commuting daily from the North to South end of the city are heavily relying on this environment friendly mode of transportation. Guwahati being an entry point to North-East India, is a busy tourist destination throughout the year, and ever since restrictions have been lifted the city has been witnessing a good influx of travellers.”

The ropeway project has been constructed and maintained through a Joint Venture Company with the technical and financial partner as Damodar Ropeways and Infra Limited (DRIL). DRIL has been amongst Asia’s most experienced ropeway & infrastructure businesses since 1974. DRIL specializes in building Passenger Ropeways, Material Ropeways and Ski-Lifts as well as bulk material handling plants. The two supporting towers inside the river bed are 9m in diameter, and with depth up to 45m.

The structure and design of the ropeway project is approved by the IIT Guwahati’ Department of Civil Engineering. DRIL’s engineering team has also included one of the safest and never before utilized features in their ropeway project called self-propelled rescue car, which is beneficial for conducting rescue operations in emergency situations. The 30+1cabin capacity project has professionals monitoring the rides every time with the help of walkie-talkie devices.

Pushkar, a small town near Ajmer has many religious sites and picturesque gems hidden for the devotees and tourists respectively. The Pushkar lake surrounded by more than 50 Ghats holds major significance in the Hindu culture. The livelihood and liveliness of the city revolve around the lake. It is believed that Lord Brahma dropped a lotus to the ground leading to the emergence of the lake. The Savitri Mata Temple is one of the gems of Pushkar city located at a high altitude on a hillock amidst expansive greenery. The Ropeway and the temple itself, offer unparalleled views, attracting non-religious tourism as well. It is located near the popular Brahma Temple, the only one in India, and a trip to Pushkar is said to be incomplete without a visit to both the Brahma temple as well as Savitri Mata temple.

The temple has been receiving thousands of tourists every year in the month of Kartik (Oct-Nov), due to the popular Pushkar Fair, one of the largest livestock fairs in India. The Ropeway has been built and continues to be operated and maintained by Damodar Ropeway & Infra Limited, a pioneer in building the Passenger Ropeways, Material Ropeways, and Ski-Lifts as well as bulk material handling plants. The ropeway has been making the holy journey to the temple convenient and memorable with its aerial passenger ropeway system erected on difficult terrain. The Aerial Ropeway constructed at a height of 202 meters, covers a distance of 720 meters in just 6 minutes, easing the strenuous climb for all age-groups of devotees and letting them be close to the divine.

The Ropeway constructed at such a great height is an engineering achievement in terms of designing and execution. DRIL has been known for delivering quality passenger cable cars in multiple places of religious importance such as Vaishno Devi, Dewas, Maihar, Naina Devi, etc. Ever since 2015, the year for the maiden cable car journey in Savitri Mata Temple, the company has been conducting safety drills, NDT tests annually on critical parts to ensure utmost safety for the travelers. The cable cars have also been updated with an updated system to ensure longevity and smooth functionality.
