Nobel Laureate Dr. Esther Duflo joins Krea University’s Governing Council

Krea University today announced the appointment of Nobel Laureate Dr. Esther Duflo as a Member of its Governing Council.

Dr. Esther Duflo is an economist and professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is also Co-Founder and Co-Director at the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). She was awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize for Economics (the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel) along with Dr. Abhijit Banerjee and Dr. Michael Kremer for developing an innovative experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.

Welcoming Dr. Esther Duflo to the Governing Council, Mr. Kapil Viswanathan, Chairman of Executive Committee & Member of Governing Council, Krea University said, “As a path-breaking scholar who has brought scientific method and rigor to the social sciences, Dr. Esther Duflo personifies Krea University’s interwoven approach to research and learning. It is a great privilege to welcome her as a member of Krea University’s governing council.”

Commenting on her appointment, Dr. Esther Duflo said, “It is fair to say that we would not have received a Nobel prize had it not been for all the research we could do in India, thanks in large part to the support we received from Krea University’s sponsoring body since 2008. I look forward to helping Krea University realize its mission to help humanity prepare for an unpredictable world.”

Krea University holds webinar on ‘R&D and National Prosperity

Krea University conducted an online webinar as a part of the ‘Krea Science Talks’ series on December 8, 2021, at 3:00 PM. The webinar titled ‘R&D and National Prosperity’ was led by eminent researcher Professor Deepak Pental, who was the former Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Genetics, University of Delhi. Professor Pental will highlight the significance of research and development (R&D) in meeting national growth and development goals.

Commenting on the webinar, Vice-Chancellor Mahesh Rangarajan of Krea University said, “Through the Krea Science Talks, noted scientists share their research that has impacted our understanding of Indian society and the world in general. We are delighted that Professor Pental will be delivering the first lecture in this series. His insights and ideas for reforms will help our students and research enthusiasts get a better idea of the ways in which science and innovation can intervene with national prosperity.”

Krea University Professor Dr. Sudip Roy elected as Fellow of The Royal Society of Chemistry

Chennai: Dr. Sudip Roy, Visiting Associate Professor of Chemistry, Krea University has been elected as a Fellow to the Royal Society of Chemistry. This is in recognition of Dr. Sudip Roy’s significant contributions to the Chemical Sciences over a period of more than two decades.

Commenting on the recognition, Dr. Sudip Roy said, “I am humbled to receive this special honour from the Royal Society of Chemistry. I would like to highlight that this appreciation also rewards my graduate students, colleagues, collaborators and leaders from academia and industry who believed in the innovative and creative research ideas that I brought in and they supported me full-heartedly in my journey of building bridges between academia and industry.”

Dr Roy was awarded his Ph.D. in Chemical Sciences from the University of Saarland in Germany followed by post-doctoral work at Technical University Darmstadt, Germany. He was also Chevening Fellow in the year 2019 and studied management of research, science, and innovation at the University of Oxford.

He has been a scientist at the CSIR- National Chemical Laboratory in Pune. His work in computational chemistry and materials science has also included work with leading companies such as Shell and Intel.

Dr Sudip Roy is a Visiting Associate Professor of Chemistry at Krea University. He is the founder of Prescience Insilico Private Limited and currently he is working as Managing Director and CTO of his own start-up in the computational Life Sciences and Materials domain.

Dr. Meenakshi Gopinath joins Krea University’s Board of Management

Chennai: Krea University announced the appointment of Dr. Meenakshi Gopinath (Ph. D.) as a Member of its Board of Management. The Board of Management supports the vice-chancellor by reviewing plans, policies and budgets of the University from an administrative perspective, including functions such as admissions, student life, placements, campus development, finance and HR.

Welcoming Dr. Meenakshi Gopinath into the Board of Management, Dr. Mahesh Rangarajan, Vice-Chancellor of Krea University said, “Dr Gopinath is distinguished both as a scholar teacher and an institution builder par excellence. As long-time head of a prominent womens’ college in the largest federal University, she stood out for fostering excellence with a larger ethical societal dimension in student and Faculty life. Her experience, presence and expertise will assist not only the Board but Krea as a whole in our onward journey”

Dr. Meenakshi Gopinath is the Founder and Director of WISCOMP (Women in Security Conflict Management and Peace) an initiative begun in 1999 to promote the leadership of South Asian women in the areas of international politics, peace, security and diplomacy. Dr Meenakshi Gopinath is Principal Emerita of Lady Shri Ram College, rated among the best institutions of higher learning in India. She had served the college as its Principal for 26 years from 1988-2014, and has worked to mould it as a centre of excellence, which seeks to educate women to assume positions of leadership in society.

Commenting on her appointment, Dr. Meenakshi Gopinath said, “KREA is a space that is brimming with the manifold possibilities of learning. Dr. Gopinath serves on the Governing Boards of research institutes, NGOs, educational institutions and corporate bodies. She also is a member of the Nonviolent Peaceforce – International, on the Council of UPEACE– a UN Mandated University, Asian University for Women, Shri Ram Foundation, Track Two initiatives in the South Asian region, Editor in Chief, Peace Prints- A South Asian Journal of Peacebuilding, New Delhi, and others. She has been a Fulbright scholar and has received several fellowships.

Krea University partners with Kauvery Hospital for campus health facilities

Krea University has inked a significant partnership with Kauvery Hospital, a reputed name in healthcare, to operate and maintain a health centre and pharmacy at Krea University campus in Sri City. The partnership also brings with it a bouquet of specialised health services, in line with the University’s focus on providing high-quality support for the health and wellbeing of Krea students, faculty and staff.

Krea University was set up with an aim to reimagine education for the 21st century. The 40-acre campus stands about 60 kilometres north of Chennai in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh and is replete with state-of-the-art facilities, with special emphasis on the physical and mental health requirements of the students, faculty and staff.

The Krea campus health centre, managed by Kauvery Hospital will have a dedicated general practitioner and occupational health nurses on duty, with the doctor available over call 24×7, ensuring that all medical requests and emergencies are swiftly dealt with. The health centre will also have a BLS ambulance with round the clock service availability and routine first aid facilities. The onsite pharmacy will cater to the needs of the campus residents with a well-stocked inventory. Apart from dedicated case basis support and follow-ups, there will also be routine check-ups and health promotion activities. From time to time, healthcare specialists will also be arranged to make campus visits.

The partnership also brings forth holistic healthcare management which could include Continuous Medical Education on a monthly basis, rendering professional advice to the campus administration in safety and hygiene practices- from the maintenance of buildings, kitchen area, food and water testing to student dietary chart. Advice on COVID management protocols will also be contributed.
